Yet another BBS'er w/ Computer Probs
My computer is really bogged down. If I do Alt+Ctrl+delete, I have about 15 programs open and I can't tell what most of them are!
I tried defragging the hard drive but it says there are errors with the disk and when I try disk cleanup that gets errors too!
I am stuck adn I have no clue what to do. I'm obviously not totally clueless but my bf was the computer god and he is no longer around so I'm forced to ask my pals here...anyone have any ideas or am I out of luck?

Also you might want to run MSCONFIG so you can get a better idea what you have loading in startup. It will give you the location on your computer where it is being stored at and most of the time you can figure out what file goes to which program that way.

Do you have spybot or adaware? you could have spyware doing it too.
How much RAM do you have? You can pick up and extra 256 megs for like $40 (sometimes less if you can find a good sale--Best Buy, Office Max, ect) I had 128 originally, and replaced it with 2 256 sticks,(I only have 2 slots) so now mine has 512megs of ram and it runs a lot faster.(they are really easy to install-- especially if you have a nice size tower, we upgraded hubby's and he has a smaller tower, and I had fun trying to get his in, but I finally did. basically, you just push them into the slot)
If ya want PM me here with a list of the programs, and I will tell you what they are if I know them.

PrncsNYC...
Please do the following in this order, and it should clean up your problem...
Good luck
Robert...

Here is how to use MSCONFIG on Windows 98, 98SE, ME, and XP to disable some of the unnecessary programs that automatically load on start-up.
1. Go to Start --> Run
2. Type MSCONFIG
3. This launches Microsoft's System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab.
4. This takes you to a page with a list of "startup items." Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.
The only startup items you absolutely need are:
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
Your antivirus program.
Since you need these startup items to be running all the time in order for your computer to work properly, make sure there is always a check mark next to all of these startup items.
If you don't see one or two these items in your list of startup items, that's cool. For example, some people may not have a LoadPowerProfile while others may have two. The big thing to remember is that you don't want to uncheck any of these files if you have them.
Its going to want to "Restart" your computer click OK.
(2)
Close all programs except "Systray" and "Explorer"
Heres how to close programs that are running.
At the same time press "Control Alt Delete"
Left click one program at a time to highlite, then click "End Task".
Remember close all programs EXCEPT, "Systray and Explorer.
(3) How to use ScanDisk.
Go to Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System tools --> Scan disk, make sure "Standard test" has a click in it, also a check mark in "Automatically fix errors".
(4) Disk Defragmenter.
Go to Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System tools --> Disk Defragmenter
Drive C physical drive should be highlited, Click OK.
Thats it...Again Good luck...

Hey everyone,
Thanks for al of the replies...I knew there would be some computer people out there.
Ok, the problem with the followibng suggestions:
previous date-just not sure how that is done lol
run MSCONFIG-did that and there were a lot of boxes to unchecck which I did but some of the same programs are still showing up...
cmanager
cfd
ccd
antivirus program-is Norton and it's broken too. It says "Norton Integrator could not initialize the frfame class please make sure that you didn't directly run the integrator.
ScanDisk-I've been trtying this for days and it fails every time...it just keeps trying adn crashing and trying again. IT says "checking file allocation and tables and folders but never finishes it.
Disk Defragmenter-it tells me that I have to run teh scan disk which well..isn't working.
It says "checking drives for errors...goes as far as 3% complete and then says "windows can't defragment this drive bc it contains errors that must 2st be repaired."
Sigh...ok...any more thoughts? I've run swearcha dn destroy but it finds nothing of importance.
