I don't think that being diabetic is common in pugs. We have never had one that was diabetic. I don't know if you can tell before hand, but usually, when you buy a Pug or any dog for that matter from a breeder or anyone in the newspaper, usually if the dog is Registered, the people that are selling the dogs or puppies will usually give you a certain amount of time to take the dog to the vet and get it checked out and the vet I am sure would be able to tell you.

The drawbacks are way less than the bonuses. I highly recommend Pugs. They are great with kids. They don't really seem to like to tear things up, dig or anything. I have had a black pug in the past and she was the best, she was so smart and she was really attached to me. I think you would be very pleased with a pug.

Stanley hardly ever sheds... but he snores super loud. My mom said something about how he almost needed nasal surgury or something.

They are really great pets, and playful too. It is sooooo funny to watch them chase their little cinnamon roll tails in circles. Stanley will sit on the ground and spin in circles trying to get it.

OK another question....are they really hard to potty train because I know one person who has one and it took her 1 year to get her dog trained and I am not sure if that is because she worked and was not home a lot or is that standard?

wow pugs do sound like a great addition. We have one dog now, No Idea what he is lol, and I wont to get at least one more after we move next summer. Dh's boss has 12 dogs, a couple cats, some birds {cant remember name of them but they are big and very loud} she also has a monkey so I am sure she wont mind us getting another doggie.

I think it depends on the particular dog. We have had a few that were very easy to potty train and then we have had some that were pretty hard to potty train. The one I have now was sooo hard to potty train but most of them have been fairly easy.

I think that Pugs are somewhat Stubborn.

I have a PUG and would not trade him for the world. I did a lot of research on the breed and let me tell you, the benefits out way the risks by-far!!

As far as the PUG breed, they are very mild tempered. They get along with children, other animals, and just love to have attention. You must be willing to give the dog or pup a lot of attention. It took us about 3 months to potty train our pug pup. But this could be done in less time if you are at home with the pup all day. Unfortunately we are not, both my hubby and I work. Neo LOVES our 3 year old daughter and our CAT, yes I did say cat!

As far as things to look for or to ask about:
    1. Do the parents have breathing problems, ie did they have to have nare surgery to enlargen their naval cavities to allow more air flow?
    2. Do the parents have any health problems, ie dry eyes, seisures, hip problems, allergies, ect? The dry eyes is really not bad just means you would need to put eye drops like Visin in everyday.
    3. Do either parent have a problem with an overreactive anal gland?
    4. Make sure the parents interact with the pups so you see how all of them react together. That is, if the parents are on site.
    5. Try to make sure the eyes do not protrude out of the head too much, I know this is wierd because most of them are bug-eyed.
    6. Also when picking out a pug, if they are a little bit of a nose they normally do not have any breathing problems but be prepared for the snoring!!! You get used to and then it is really cute when they do start snoring.
    7. One last thing, make sure the puppy is playful and happy. The kennel or the bed where the pups are kept is somewhat clean and that they do have water.

The benefits of having a pug go on and on and on. They really are like humans because each pug has it's own personality. Some are lazy bones and others are very wired, like mine! I was told that they were stubborn but we have not run into this with our pug Neo. He is a fawn. Right now we are currently looking for another pug perferably black, for a playmate for Neo.

If you have ANY questions about pugs, feel free to email me or PM about them!!! Would be glad to help!!!!!!! wendybarbre@msn.com
