Beware! The No. 1 Childhood Injury Is...

    ...medication poisoning.

And while it can happen at any age, the most dangerous time for such poisoning is from 18 months to 35 months of age, reports Reuters of a new study issued on Monday by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Researchers from the University of California studied the medical records of more than 23,000 childhood injuries, 636 of which were fatal, from 1996 to 1998.

After medication poisoning, the most common injuries kids suffer by age are:

    Before 3 months: Falls

3 to 5 months: Battering by parents or caregivers

6 to 8 months: Falls from furniture

9 to 11 months: Swallowing foreign objects

12 to 17 months: Burns from hot liquid or hot vapors

3 to 4 years: Moving vehicles hitting children on foot

The overall injury rate for all causes increases with age starting at 3 months to 5 months and then peaks at 15 months to 17 months. "This coincides with developmental achievements such as independent mobility, exploratory behavior, and hand-to-mouth activity," Reuters quotes the report as saying. "The child is able to access hazards but has not yet developed cognitive hazard awareness and avoidance skills."

They wiggle, they squiggle, they squirm, and yes -- they roll. My oldest rolled over at THREE DAYS ! We could never leave him on the bed even surounded by pillows because he would just go under them !People have been known to fall asleep holding the baby and let the baby slip out of their arms.

Wow! That's scary! What a strong baby!

I thought aboout it after I replied and I Thought about people dropping babies. Especially when they are that young and you are exhausted. I remember being so paranoid when my kids were that little and I got no sleep. I hope I didn't sound ignorant in my first reply; I didn't mean to. I was just tired and didn't think about it.

About the medicine poisoning, I could see how that could easily happen. Especially since some of thier cold medicinces have tylenol in them, and ya don't realize it and give them more tylenol. And their medicines taste so good they just want to drink it!
