cat+passing stone=question
Last night my husband and I noticed that our cat Archie was going to his litter box around 5 or 6 times within 5 minutes. Upon further investigation we noticed that his urine was light pink. I called the Vet and he said that it sounded like Archie either had a bladder infection or he was passing a stone. He also said that the fact that Archie is urinating and is acting like normal is okay and isn't a medical emergency. We have to take him in to see the vet this afternoon. My question is: how will they be able to know for sure if he is in fact passing a stone? Will they be able to tell us if there are more stones? How can we prevent this from happening again? I am very worried about him and any answers or personal experiences with this sort of thing will help! Thanks so much!

We had a cat when I was a kid that got them often. After his fourth surgery, we opted to put him to sleep, but not to scare you...that was over 20 years ago. It seems to me that the vet explained it happens to male cats, some are more prone to it. I know they told us to only give him food with low ash content. If you go to specialty pet stores now, I'm sure you can find it.
Good luck with the poor guy!
If the mailman knew that my heart races when the UPS man comes by, would he still bring me freebies?

Disabled Female USAF Vet
male cats seem to get this problem more often than female cats. Years ago I had a male persian that had problems. One of the first things the vet told me to do was to start giving the cat canned food on occasion. There was something in dry cat food that affected the male.

My Cat, Riley always gets an infection if he ever goes off of his PURINA UTD food. You might want to try feeding your cat UTD cat food.

chort1313: Do you know if Iams has a UTD cat food? Iams is what we have fed him since we got him and the vet told me to keep him on Iams the last time I took Archie (Archie has a little bit of a weight problem) Could the excess weight cause stones as well???
adair: Thanks for the advice about the canned food. I will try that!
Thanks everyone!!!!

BigBig Evildoer
we have a big male kitty that has this problem. We fed him Purina One for Urinary health. Friskies just recently came out with one that is cheaper (about $6 a bag less) that works just as well. Our vet told us that it was either give him this food, a daily pill, put him to sleep, or if we really wanted too...give him a sex change. He's neutered but i don't think he's ready to be transgendered.
