    Shipping Help

I am going to be sending some packages to some soldiers over in Afghanistan. I have a few questions:
What are the different ways that you send it (1st class, parcel etc)and how much does it usually cost per pound? I'm trying to get a general idea of prices. I have seen posts where people will say that they sent a certain pound with the price but won't include which way it was sent and others that tell how they send it. I have yet to see one that tells me both. Can anyone please tell me how they send them, the pounds, and the price.

I also forgot, about how long does each way take to get there?

    Thank You

I think most people weigh them on their scale and then go to the USPS website and calculate the shipping. As for how long it tkaes to get there, send them ASAP. The military postal service is SLOW.

tells international postage rates, although when I sent my cousin a package I sent it to a local base and they sent it overseas.

Thanks, I tried that link. The international calculator wouldn't work. I looked under international parcel post and it said $20 something for 5 pounds. Does that sound right? I have never sent anything out of the US before so I'm not sure if I'm looking at the right thing.

The reason it won't work is it is saying it can't ship 5lbs overseas, breaks some kind of regulations.

if you are sending to someone in the service the PO will give you a different rate than us reg people get as long as its a military adress. when i ship to my son it usually coasts 1/2 of what i would normally pay to a civillian adress.

I know but others have sent packages that weighed more then that or are they sending them priority mail? I also didn't see anything about 1st class either.

Maybe you should go to your local post office and talk to them. There could be some shipping restrictions to Afghanistan. Or size restrictions. But I would get them mailed yesterday! 6 weeks may not be enough to get there military mail.

Talk to your post office (or phone them) about shipping options.

Cost me $13 to send 2 average-sized magazines to England once...

when i ship to my son who is in bosnia, the PO will give you a choice of 1st class or parcel post. for the little difference in $$ i usually choise 1st class. Either way the PO does deliver as it can but after it gets to the military addyw the military takes over and does the rest of delivery to the posts where they are stationed. so if your package gets there weeks later its not the PO its the military. Kuwait is a really bad place to get anything delivered to or from. Son was there and it took 41/2 months to get his letter that he mailed for my birthday.

Thanks again. I think you pretty much cleared everything up. Thankfully, no one in my family is over there right now but I'm sending something to my brothers friends. It's the least I can do. My brother was over in bosnia a few times but I was never able to send him anything. The last time he was over there we were able to email each other which was pretty neat.
    Thanks everyone for helping me
