    Teacher locks kids in....need thoughts

My son just told me this morning on the way to school that one of his teachers (middle school) locks the doors every day when they go to class, to prevent late kids from coming in. I have mixed feelings about this....I guess it could be safe to be locked in...I'm not sure. Would like to hear others thoughts about this. Thanks.

I can see why this would worry you...

Our local elementary school does the same thing....but let me explain.

There are 2 doors in the classroom. One inside the school and one that leads to the outside. Both doors stay locked from the outside at all times. But from the inside, they can get out either door at any time. I questioned this because I was in fear of a fire, emergency of any kind. I was told this was all due to the Columbine thing. They can get the kids out through the door to the outside but no one would be able to get to the kids from inside the school because the door was locked from the hall. In order to get into the classroom, you had to knock on the door and the teacher had to let you in.

Now my kids changed schools Oct. 2001. They go to a small school. They don't lock any doors which worries me. I can go to the school at anytime of day and walk right in. Go straight to either of my kids classrooms and go in. SO there is no way to keep some whacked person from entering and harming our children. I think I'd rather have the locked doors. It's probably more of a safety thing than to keep kids that are late from coming in. Our schools require the kids that are late to go to the office and get a tardy slip to enter their class. Now if the kids can't get out from the inside without the teacher unlocking the door, then I would worry. If this is the case, Id contact your principal or school board to discuss this.

I think I'm rambling...hope you got all this.

i'm not sure..but isn't there some sort of rule about locking the emergency exits while kids are in school?? if that is the only door to the room wouldn't that be classed as the emerg. exit???
i think i'd call the school or look and see if it says anything in the handbook about it...if the school doesn't respond to your questions..u can always call the fire marshall and they can do surprise checks ....

Both my kids schools do the same thing. Alot has changed since Columbine. Just like blueyez37811 said at our schools you can get out from the inside(just push on the door or in some cases turn the knob) but you cant get IN from the outside. If there was a fire they would go out the door. I fully support the idea. Its a safety measure so people can tjust waltz in and go inside the class rooms. There are also intercoms and a shatter proof window in the door. If someone is late they have to go to the office and get a pass then the office lets the teacher know.

I appreciate the responses. That was my major concern, is there another way out of the classroom in case of emergency. In that case, I am perfectly okay with the locked doors. I have parent/teacher conference today, so can check it out then. If there is no other way out of the room, yes, I am worried, in case of say the "columbine" student being a student IN the classroom...or fire, etc. Thanks again for responding.

I would occasionally do that when students were consistently begin late. When the bell would ring, I would lock the classroom door, and start class. After a few minutes, when all the late kids would arrive, I would go to the door, unlock it, and take down all their names (for lunch detention, write ups, depending). Then they could come in, and the door would stay unlocked. It was the best way to control who was coming in and out at the appropriate time. Once everyone was there, there was no need to lock the door since nobody else should have been coming in and out. We did havehall monitors too, and they were on our floor quite a bit, so we were never too worried about people coming in when they weren't supposed to, although I suppose anything can happen
