Thread: Hello from Lawton

Well howdy everyone...I hope all of you are doing well. I am doing quite good.

Things in Oklahoma and at KSWO are going great. I couldn't ask for a better station to start at. The management has been with me every step of the way and there are a lot of benefits such as free cable, internet, free checking account, etc. that are not common. The station also gave me a laptop to use since I could not fit my computer in my car.

I will start my third weekend on-air tomorrow. The morning guy during the week is going on vacation and I'll be in for him next week and the week after, so I have a lot of on-air time coming up the next couple of weeks that I'm looking forward to.

The strange thing is the severe weather coverage. Stations out here break in and go wall to wall for the common variety thunderstorm. This is so weird to me, because back home if you did that the public would have a hissy fit. Apparently the public here is so scared of tornadoes that stations have to go wall to wall in order to reassure them that the storms are not severe. We have a good chance for storms tomorrow, so my hunch is I'll have to do some cut-ins. My first weekend we had a tornado warning for one of our Texas counties. I had help from the other two mets that first weekend, so they did the cut-ins so I could observe.

Another thing I've had a problem with is the pronunciation of town names. A lot of the names are of Indian origin and are pronounced differently than they look.

It has been so hectic trying to get settled in my apartment and change my address with the lovely bill collectors that I've not had much time to email.

Humm...let me see if there is anything else...I've starting to have people come up to me when I go out in public which is kind of cool. Best of all I am really, really enjoying my job and it is a dream come true. A good friend from UNCA is the morning meteorologist at KSWO, so it is also nice to have a familer face and someone to hang out with. Also, if you sent me an email wanting a tape I hope to dub them and get them in the mail this upcoming week. If you didn't email me for one but would still like one, just email me.
