Kai's "Old-Fashioned" Recipe Thread

You are a wealth of information my man. Thank you. I was planning on calling Bonnie tomorrow (she buys the liquor for the Symphony) and see if she could get it for me from her distributor by the case. (my mom & sister both like the Electras too...dadot thinks it tastes like wine coolers...she's a cabernet/merlot girl) I'll call Major Brands tomorrow. My sister-in-law orders wine by the case from Wisconsin, but through a winery, not a distributor. Thanks for the help!

You polka 'on occasion.' And what sort of occasion would it be? A wedding reception? If you have enough beer at the BeerFest I bet you'd polka. Wow. I haven't polkaed/polkad/polka'd in years. Since the last family wedding.

For Isabelle ...

CRISSCROSS COOKIES:

1/4 cup softened butter or margarine
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
2 TBSP milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
2 1/4 cups oatmeal infant cereal

Cream butter and sugar together.
Add egg and other ingredients; mix until well blended.
Chill dough for several hours.
Form dough into small balls and place 1" apart on greased baking sheets.
Flatten dough with the tines of a fork.
Bake at 350 for 15 minutes or until lightly browned.
Cool on a cake rack.
Makes 2 dozen cookies.

1 cookie supplies 15% of the iron your baby needs.


TEETHING BISCUITS:

2 TBSP shortening
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp water
1 1/2 cups Oatmeal infant cereal

Cream shortening and sugar together.
Add egg and other ingredients.
Knead well until smooth.
Pat into rectangle (12 x 2 1/2).
Cut into 12 (1 inch) bars.
Smooth edges so they will not be sharp; place on ungreased baking
sheet.
Bake at 300 for 45 min or until golden brown.
Store in uncovered container overnight before serving.
Makes 12 biscuits.

1 biscuit supplies 25% of the iron your baby needs.

SUMMER FRUIT SALAD
1 large mango, peeled and diced
2 cups fresh blueberries
2 bananas, sliced
2 cups fresh strawberries, halved
2 cups seedless grapes
2 nectarines, unpeeled and sliced
1 kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced
- Honey Orange Sauce:
1/3 cup unsweetened orange juice
2 Tbsp lemon juice
1 1/2 Tbsp honey
1/4 tsp ground ginger
- dash of nutmeg

DIRECTIONS:
Prepare the fruit.
Combine all ingredients for sauce and mix.
Just before serving, pour Honey Orange Sauce over fruit.

Arroz con Pollo

1 large fryer
1 cup salad oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
6-ounce can tomatoes (drained, but save juice)
1-1/2 quarts water
1 bay leaf
2 tablespoons salt
Pinch of saffron
1/2 medium-sized bell pepper, sliced
1-3/4 cups long grain rice
6-ounce can peas
1 small pimento, sliced

Cut chicken into quarters and fry in salad oil.
When chicken is well browned, add onion, garlic, and drained tomatoes.
Use the liquid from the tomatoes to make up the 1-1/2 quarts water. Add the water, bay leaf, salt, saffron, and green pepper.
Stir thoroughly and let cook slowly for 20 minutes.
Place chicken in a covered baking pan, add liquid and rice, and cook in 350-degree oven for about 20 minutes or until rice is tender. Heat peas and serve over rice. Garnish with pimento.



PEANUT BUTTER PIE

If you're a peanut-butter lover, this very sweet, peanutty pie will goa long way toward soothing your cravings. A small piece will suffice for most people, due to the pie's richness.

3 eggs
1 cup sugar
1 cup corn syrup
1/3 cup peanut butter
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 unbaked pie shell

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
In a large mixing bowl, beat eggs, sugar, corn syrup, peanut butter, and vanilla on medium speed, 5 minutes.
Pour into pie shell; bake 15 minutes.
Reduce heat to 325 degrees; bake until filling is set, 30 to 35 minutes more.
