Brothers identified as Belgium bombers as manhunt intensifies

Belgian media on Wednesday withdrew reports that a man arrested in the capital was Brussels attacks suspect Najim Laachraoui.

"Arrested man in Anderlecht is not Najim Laachraoui," the Derniere Heure newspaper tweeted, while the RTL broadcaster said that the "suspect arrested in Anderlecht was not Najim Laachraoui in the end."

This is a breaking news update. AFP's earlier story follows...

Two suicide bombers who struck Brussels were identified Wednesday as brothers linked to the prime suspect in the November 13 Paris attacks, as a manhunt for a third assailant in Belgium's bloodiest terror assault gained pace.

A day after the triple blasts that killed some 30 people and left around 250 injured, in an operation claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group, RTBF television said police had identified two suicide attackers as Khalid and Ibrahim El Bakraoui.

Police had already been hunting the pair over their links to Salah Abdeslam, the key suspect in November's Paris terror attacks, who was arrested in Brussels on Friday after four months on the run.

Three days of national mourning have been declared, in a country deeply shocked by the carnage. The population of Brussels was also asked to observe a minute's silence at noon (1100 GMT) Wednesday, led by King Philippe and Prime Minister Charles Michel.

Two suicide blasts hit Brussels' Zaventem airport on Tuesday morning followed soon after by a third on a train at Maalbeek station, close to the European Union's institutions, just as rush-hour commuters were heading to work.

The bloodshed was unprecedented in a city that is home to both NATO and the EU as well as Belgium's capital.

The attacks sent the city into lockdown and European airports scrambled to boost security, amid fresh questions over Europe's ability to combat terrorism little more than four months after the Paris attacks that left 130 dead and 350 wounded.

Brussels' subway was partially running again by Wednesday morning under tight security, with soldiers checking passengers' bags at station entrances. The rush-hour crowds on the platforms were noticeably thinner than usual.

"I'm a bit afraid, especially for my little brothers," said Dominique Salazar, 18, who was taking her siblings, three and six years old, to school.

"But we don't any other choice to get around."

    - Attacker on the run -

Belgian authorities have launched a dragnet, releasing CCTV images of three men pushing trolleys through the airport and issuing a public appeal for information. Two of the men died in suicide blasts. The third, whose explosives did not go off, is still on the run.

Prosecutors said police raids were carried out across Belgium on Tuesday, adding that a bomb, an Islamic State flag and chemicals were found in one apartment.

RTBF said Khalid El Bakraoui had rented an apartment in Brussels last week under a false name where Abdeslam's fingerprints were found.

He is also linked to another apartment in southern Belgium that Abdeslam and other jihadists used before the Paris attacks.

The link to Abdeslam -- who told prosecutors he was planning an attack on Brussels -- has underscored fears about authorities' inability to undermine jihadist networks in Belgium, Europe's top exporter of jihadist fighters to Syria per capita.

Abdeslam, Europe's most wanted man, was arrested in a dramatic raid Friday in the rundown Brussels neighbourhood of Molenbeek -- just around the corner from his family home.

"This is a day of tragedy, a black day," Michel said Tuesday on national television, vowing the country would not be cowed by the "deadliest attacks we have ever seen in Belgium".

Leaders across Europe reacted with outrage, with the EU vowing to defend democracy and tolerance but also combat terrorism "with all means necessary."

Optics Of Obama's Reaction To Brussels Was A Disaster
President Barack Obama During An ESPN Interview

By Oren Peleg, Wed, March 23, 2016

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is criticizing President Barack Obama for the optics of his response to the Brussels terrorist attacks, as seen in the video below. Giuliani, who was mayor during the September 11th terrorist attacks, condemned the president for smiling and having a good time while addressing the latest terrorist attacks.

Giuliani argued on MSNBC that Obama should have left Cuba when he learned of the attacks and returned to Washington to show that he was in control of the situation.

“Here’s what I would have done,” Giuliani said. “I would have immediately left, gotten the national security staff together and said, ‘When I wake up tomorrow morning, I was a complete plan on how we destroy ISIS.’”

Joe Scarborough, co-host of “Morning Joe” supported Giuliani’s view.

“You look at what happened after Paris, [Obama’s] listless response, his weak response made Americans say, ‘Why can’t our president be as tough as France’s president?’” Scarborough asked. “That’s something never said and has actually contributed to the rise of Donald Trump.”

According to Mediaite, Obama was asked by ESPN during the interview if he had considered leaving the game to deal with the situation.

“It’s always a challenge when you have a terrorist attack anywhere in the world, particularly in this age of 24/7 news coverage,” the President began. “You want to be respectful and understand the gravity of the situation, but the whole premise of terrorism is to try to disrupt people’s ordinary lives.”

During the September 11th terrorist attacks, then-president George W. Bush was informed of the unfolding events while reading and interacting with schoolchildren in Florida. His opponents at the time ridiculed his seven-minute delay in leaving the classroom.

Obama On ISIS: ‘I’ve Got A Lot On My Plate’
… ‘They’re Not An Existential Threat’

    1:13 PM 03/23/2016

Speaking to reporters in Argentina Wednesday, President Obama downplayed the gravity of Tuesday’s terror attacks in Brussels by saying ISIS does not pose “an existential threat” to national security.

“I addressed this issue a little bit at the baseball game when I was interviewed by ESPN,” the president explained, “but let me reiterate.”

“Groups like ISIL can’t destroy us. They can’t defeat us,” he continued. “They can’t produce anything. They’re not an existential threat to us.”

Obama noted that Islamic extremists are “vicious killers and murderers who perverted one of the world’s great religions.”

“Their primary power — in addition to killing innocent lives — is to strike fear in our societies,” he added. “It is very important for us to not respond with fear.”

Earlier in the press conference, Obama showed displeasure when an Associated Press reporter asked whether the Brussels attacks “changed anything.”

“I’ve got a lot of things on my plate,” he responded before assuring reporters his top priority is “to eliminate the scourge of this barbaric terrorism that’s been taking place around the world.”

"They’re not an existential threat to us.”
Tell that to all the dead people- Including the Americans killed. People throw that phrase around "Existential Threat" like they use the phrase "Good Morning". So, this dunderhead seems to think if only a few dozens, or hundreds, or thousands and made "extinct"- that is acceptable. Who the hell does he think he is? If it's you or me- it's okay if we are whacked by his own brand of terrorism- that's what he is saying.

I'd think if he had to use metro stations, or airport gates- ran marathons, or went to clubs that hadn't been cleared by dogs and guarded by an army before he arrived, that threat may seem a teensy bit more real.

Americans Killed In Brussels Terror Attack:
Wife Of Air Force Colonel Confirmed Among The Dead

    Tara West

An American wife of an Air Force colonel has been confirmed among the dead in the devastating Brussels terror attack. A series of coordinated terror attacks in Brussels, Belgium, left 34 people dead and injured more than 270 people. The attacks took place at the Zaventem Airport and a train station in the neighborhood of Molenbeek.

The Daily Mail reports that at least two Americans have been confirmed dead in the Belgium terrorist attack which occurred on March 22. The attacks consisted of three coordinated bombings which took place at the busy Brussels Zaventem Airport as well as a train station. The news of the two American nationals being killed comes shortly after officials have confirmed that two Dutch siblings that have been living in New York were among the deceased. Sascha and Alexander Pinczowski, siblings who were from Holland but had been living in New York, were killed during the bombing.

Washington (AFP) - Two Americans were killed in the Brussels attacks and other US citizens are missing, the State Department confirmed Friday.

Thirty-one people lost their lives and 300 others were wounded in Tuesday's airport and metro suicide blasts claimed by the Islamic State group.

"We can confirm that two US citizens were killed in the attack," spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau told reporters, adding that US officials were continuing to coordinate with Belgian authorities in order to account for other Americans in the Belgian capital.

"We offer our sincere condolences to their family and friends," Trudeau said but declined to provide more details on the victims out of respect for the families involved.

The official US confirmation of the American deaths came just hours after Secretary of State John Kerry, speaking in Brussels, said he stood by the Belgian people, echoing their backing for the United States after the 9/11 terror attacks.

The top diplomat had said earlier that a number of Americans had died in the attacks, with a US official giving the number as two.

The United States has a strong presence in Brussels, with an embassy as well as missions to the European Union and NATO. Countless Americans work or live in the Belgian capital, or travel there for business or pleasure.

BREAKING : Nuclear Alert After Security Officer ‘Found Dead With His Pass Missing’
Freelance journalist, Fayçal Cheffou, was arrested on Thursday and according to Belgian reports is the third airport bombing suspect. His charge comes as it emerged as security guard at a Belgian nuclear facilty was killed

By David Chazan, and Henry Samuel, in Brussels

Nuclear breach fears as three more charged over terror offences

A security guard who worked at a Belgian nuclear medical research facility was murdered two days after the Brussels bombings, it emerged yesterday (Saturday), deepening fears that Islamist terror cells are plotting attacks against nuclear installations.

Didier Prospero, a guard with the G4S security company, was shot dead at his home in the Froidchapelle district of Brussels on less than 24 hours after Belgian authorities stripped several workers of their security passes at two nuclear plants this week.

The circumstances of 45-year-old Mr Prospero’s death remained murky last night, with conflicting reports over whether or not the murder was linked to terrorism, or if his work security pass had been stolen.

News of the killing emerged as Belgian prosecutors announced on Saturday they have charged three men with terror offenses over the suicide attacks, as organisers cancelled a solidarity rally at the government's request because police are too stretched to cope.

Prosecutors said a man identified as Faycal C., who was arrested on Thursday, has been charged with "involvement in a terrorist group, terrorist murder and attempted terrorist murder."

Belgian media say he is Faycal Cheffou, the man in the light vest and hat pictured on security video with two men who blew themselves up at the airport. Cheffou is described as a local activist known to police for trying to rally asylum-seekers and homeless people to radical Islam.

Prosecutors would not confirm the Belgian media reports. A police raid was conducted at his home but no arms or explosives were found, they said.

Two other suspects detained on Thursday and identified as Raba N. and Aboubakar A. were charged with "involvement in the activities of a terrorist group."

In addition, a man named as Abderamane A. who was taken into custody on Friday after he was shot by police at a Brussels tram stop is being held for at least 24 more hours.

The arrests came after news emerged that Mr Prospero was found dead in his bathroom by his three children when they returned home from school on Thursday afternoon. He had received four gunshot wounds. His sheepdog Beauce was also killed and lay next to him.

Belgian prosecutors maintained last night that the murder was the result of a burglary gone wrong, but provided no detailed explanation as to why Mr Prospero, a respectable family man should suddenly have been murdered in a freak burglary.

The killing comes after a string of security scares and breaches around Belgium’s nuclear infrastructure and the discovery last November an Islamic State cell in Brussels had kept a top Belgian nuclear scientist under video surveillance.

The report of Mr Prospero’s murder heightened concerns that the Brussels bombers were plotting to build a radioactive “dirty” bomb — but apparently shelved the plan after security was stepped up at Belgium’s nuclear plants this month following intelligence warnings.

Belgian authorities have played down the risk posed by jihadists to its nuclear facilities in the past.

Last November 10 hours of surveillance footage of a top Belgian nuclear scientist was discovered in a house belonging to a known jihadi, but the existence of the footage was only acknowledged by Belgian authorities on February 18 after it was leaked to a Belgian paper.

The film is believed by security forces to have been taken by Ibrahim and Khalid el-Bakraoui, the brothers who the authorities say were suicide bombers at the Brussels airport and subway station. They are understood to have removed a hidden camera from bushes outside the official’s house.

After the news broke Jan Jambon, the Belgian interior minister, rejected a proposal to deploy troops saying that “nothing indicates a specific threat to nuclear power plants”, but two weeks later, on March 4, changed his mind and deployed 140 soldiers to guard five nuclear facilities.
Belgium prosecutors told the Sunday Telegraph that Mr Prospero was not employed at a nuclear plant, but worked guarding a nuclear medical research facility in Fleurus, near Charleroi, about 30 miles from his home in Froidchapelle.

This was contradicted by G4S who said that Mr Prospero was a general patrol officer who did not have access to nuclear facilities or guard nuclear sites.

The company added that Mr Prospero’s security pass had not gone missing in the attack, contradicting reports in Belgian local media that the security pass had been stolen.

“He was killed at gunpoint at his home. All indications are that it has nothing to do with his work, from what we understand,” a G4S spokesman said, “There is no missing pass. All his uniform and his papers are accounted for. G4S are co-operating with the police investigation.”

The is not the first time that fears of a terror threat to Belgium's nuclear power plants have been raised.

In 2013, an engineer from Doel 4, one of the nuclear reactors of a power plant near Anvers, was sacked over concerns that he had been radicalised after he refused to shake his superior's hand.

The employee was later identified as the brother-in-law of Azzedine Kbir Bounekoub, a jihadist involved with Sharia4Belgium, who left Belgium to join Isil in Syria in 2012 and had frequently called on Isil sympathisers to launch terror attacks in Belgium.

In another disturbing incident, a turbine at the same Doel 4 reactor was sabotaged in 2014 when someone deliberately turned security cameras the other way and then emptied 65,000 litres of oil used to lubricate the turbine.

The incident, which nearly caused the reactor to overheat, has never been elucidated and there have been no arrests. The federal prosecutor is "seriously considering" the theory that was linked to terrorism, according to the French newspaper Libération.

    Three suspects charged

Three suspects were charged with terrorism offences on Saturday including one man named in Belgian media as the third Brussels airport attacker who fled as the other two blew themselves up.

The man, described as a freelance journalist, Fayçal Cheffou, was reported to be the mysterious third man captured on CCTV footage wearing a hat and a light-coloured summer jacket previously identified as Mohamed Abrini, 31. The two suicide bombers with him, Ibrahim El-Bakraoui and Najim Laachraoui, detonated their suitcase bombs, but his failed to go off and he was seen running away.

    Fayçal Cheffou
    Fayçal Cheffou

In earlier reports, however, the mysterious third man captured on camera was identified as Mohamed Abrini, 31.

Amid continuing confusion about the third suspect’s identity, a source close to the investigation said police were trying to confirm if the man is Cheffou, who was arrested as police rounded up suspects linked with the network behind the Brussels bombings on Thursday and Friday.

Faycal Cheffou reportedly lived in a middle-class apartment block just a few minutes walk from the European Commission headquarters.

The self-styled journalist, who was arrested on Thursday in a series of police raids bin the Belgian capital, lived on the top floor of the four-storey building near the European Union district.

A police raid was conducted at his home but no arms or explosives were found, they said.

According to Le Soir newspaper, quoting an anonymous police source, Cheffou was recognised in a police lineup by the taxi driver who dropped off the three terrorists at the airport on Tuesday morning.

The report has not been confirmed. A source close to the investigation said police were exploring a theory that Cheffou was the third attacker. “It is a hypothesis the investigators are working on,” the source said.
