Whom to root against? CAIR sues Abercrombie & Fitch
Whom to root against?
CAIR sues Abercrombie & Fitch
So whom do I root against? The worst reactionary impulses of the seventh century, or the engines of postmodern degradation?
A pox on both their houses.
Okay, this is ridiculous on many levels. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php...cle=1&catnum=3
The Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-OK) announced today that it has filed an EEOC complaint on behalf of a Muslim woman who was allegedly denied employment at an Abercrombie Kids store in that state because of the applicant’s religiously-mandated headscarf, or hijab.
The woman told CAIR-OK that a district manager claimed he could not hire her because her Islamic headscarf “does not fit the Abercrombie image.”
What, wasn’t the OKC Hooters hiring?
This plaintiff is fighting to preserve her modesty while going to work for a company that’s injected more soft porn into our cultural bloodstream than Cinemax?
Next up: the Bada Bing Strip Club gets sued for refusing to let their dancers shimmy inside a burqa ?
Of course the plaintiff was going to work for Abercrombie Kids, which is a pretty creepy bit of branding synergy right there. I didn’t even know such a thing existed. But I can see the niche it fills–parents worried that modern society is too sheltering. Some dad’s out there going, “my kids are going to preserve their innocence too long…is there a store where I can get them a head start on that lucrative streetwalker career?”
I remember when Abercrombie and Fitch was basically like Cabela’s or Bass Pro Shops for the Weatherby and Orvis set. I still have a faded T-Shirt of theirs, with the rhino logo, from the late 1980s. It’s a great loss.
On the other hand, as with Jamal Miftah, this is radical Islam asserting itself yet again in the heartland. This isn’t Manchester or Khartoum or Basra. Based on the A&F store locator, this is apparently either Penn Square Mall, or Quail Springs, or Woodland Hills malls in Oklahoma.
Which shouldn’t be surprising–after all, terrorism expert Steven Emerson first encountered radical Islam at the Oklahoma City fairgrounds on Christmas day, 1992. http://iona.ghandchi.com/emerson.htm
I mean - really -this is rich…
They want to work at TARGET, but not handle pork…
They want to drive a cab, but no liquor or dogs…
Now, the greatest drain on adolescent morality in the retail sector???
Where does their seeking to control the AMERICAN business end… Not until they control it all, and we stop for PRAYER five times a day, and all say ALLAH AKBAR…
Whether or not you like the clothes A&F sells (and A&F’s largest size is probably 10 sizes too small for me) is irrelevant. Whether or not you like the image A&F portrays (I do not) is irrelevant. This is a calculated effort by CAIR to attempt to establish a legal precedent. Does anybody mulling over who to support really believe that A&F jives with Islam? Does anybody mulling over who to support - A&F or CAIR - really believe that this was not a calculated decision to target CAIR? Does anybody mulling over who to support really believe that CAIR didn’t target A&F precisely because they knew the girl would be turned down for employment? Does anybody mulling over who to support really believe that the first place a teenage girl would run to to cry about job discrimination would be the Council on American-Islamic Relations?
Wake up.

Well it is a good way to sue a company with deep pockets.
Actually, if it will make that company sell more modest clothes it may be a good thing.
As for the other companies, do the job or get fired.
And someone needs to explain to them what Hooters are. LOL

I received this in an email. I really don't care since it is only one plant and many employees are Muslim. I would need to know how many Americans are working there since they do not get Labor Day off. That wouldnt be fair if the majority are Americans.
Tyson Foods warms up to Islam
Associated Press - 8/3/2008 6:45:00 AM
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. - Workers at the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant in Shelbyville will no longer have a paid day off on Labor Day but will instead be given the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr as a holiday.
According to a news release from the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, a new five-year contract at the plant included the change to accommodate the hundreds of Somali Muslims who work at the plant .
Eid al-Fitr — which falls on Oct. 1 this year — marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting.
Union leaders say implementing the holiday was important for the nearly 700 Muslims, many of them Somalis, who work at the plant that employs a total of 1,200 people.
The Shelbyville Times-Gazette newspaper quotes union spokesman Randy Hadley as saying the negotiating team felt this change was "extremely crucial, since this holiday is as important to Muslims as Christmas is to Christians."
The newspaper also quotes the union as saying two prayer rooms have been created at the Shelbyville Tyson Foods' plant " to allow Muslim workers to pray twice a day and return to work without leaving the plant."

well gonna be 500 or less.......I do not like Tyson and will NOT support them BUT for anyone who has NOT worked in a chicken plant they might say they had labor day off but most likely they never got it off OR if they did then the plant would be open on the Saturday of the same week of the paid holiday so they didn't have to pay them over time. So this way they are at least assured a day off because it is in the contract for the next 5 yrs. So chances are that most likely the Americans don't care about losing a holiday they get screwed on anyway.

Tyson plant adds Muslim holiday, keeps Labor Day
By ROSE FRENCH, Associated Press Writer
Fri Aug 8, 5:16 PM ET
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Union workers and officials at a Tyson Foods plant in Tennessee said Friday they have agreed to reinstate Labor Day as a paid holiday, and the plant will also observe the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr this year.
Tyson had previously agreed to drop Labor Day and substitute the Muslim holiday as part of a new 5-year contract to accommodate Muslim workers at the plant in Shelbyville, which is about 50 miles south of Nashville. The decision sparked widespread criticism, from local politicians to talk radio to the Internet.
The Springdale, Ark.-based company said it requested reinstating Labor Day after complaints from plant workers and the public.
Union members voted Thursday to reinstate Labor Day as one of the plant's paid holidays and keep Eid al-Fitr as an additional paid holiday for this year only. For the remainder of the contract, workers will have Labor Day and a personal holiday, which can be used to observe Eid al-Fitr or another day the employee's supervisor approves.
Union officials have said at least a couple hundred of the 1,200 plant workers are Muslim.
Eid al-Fitr — which falls on Oct. 1 this year — marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting.
Muslim civil rights advocates criticized Tyson Foods, and a union official said the company's response was disingenuous. "This wasn't something imposed. It seems that this backtracking would be the result of the backlash from anti-Muslim hate (Web) sites and Islamophobes on the Internet," said Ibrahim Hooper, spokesman for Washington D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations.
Stuart Appelbaum, president of the union headquartered in New York, said he was surprised by the reaction to the holiday change. "I would have thought that people would have been more sensitive and sympathetic to the concern to the members of our community, who want to celebrate their religious faith," he said. "It's a little disingenuous to say that they (Tyson) were responding to employee concerns. The proposal came from workers themselves."
Tyson's previous decision to drop Labor Day as a paid holiday drew intense scrutiny. In a letter to the Shelbyville Times-Gazette newspaper published Thursday, the local mayor and other state elected leaders said substituting Labor Day "for a nontraditional holiday is unacceptable."
"For over a hundred years, Labor Day has stood as a symbol to honor the working men and women of this country. But for the past few years traditions like Labor Day have been under attack. This time it's gone too far and we, as patriotic Americans, must draw our line in the sand," the letter said states.
Requests for workplace accommodations of Muslim religious obligations have become common around the country, say Muslim advocates.
In 2005, 30 workers walked off the job at a Dell Inc. plant in Nashville after alleging the company refused to let them pray at sunset.
Last year, dozens of Somali meatpacking workers at a Nebraska plant quit their jobs because they were not given enough time off for Muslim prayers, though they eventually returned to work at the Swift & Co. plant.
