    Exclamation Lafayette

Theater gunman was 'drifter' who planned to escape
by MELINDA DESLATTE and MICHAEL KUNZELMAN - 59 mins ago

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — The movie theater gunman who stood up about 20 minutes into the showing of "Trainwreck" and began firing into the crowd, killing two people, was described as a drifter from Alabama whose escape plan was thwarted by police officers who arrived almost immediately, authorities said Friday. The gunman killed himself.

Nine people were wounded in the attack Thursday night. The gunman, identified as 59-year-old John Russel Houser, fired at least 13 times from a handgun, police said. He had parked his car by the theater's exit door and initially tried to escape by blending into the fleeing crowd, but turned back when he saw police heading inside from the parking lot, authorities said. Officers tailing him back into the theater then heard a single gunshot and found him dead inside, police said.

"It is apparent that he was intent on shooting and then escaping," Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said.

Authorities did not release a motive. They said Houser had been in the Lafayette area since early July, staying at a motel where they found disguises, including glasses and wigs. His 1995 blue Lincoln Continental had a license plate on it that didn't match the car.

Police said the gunman was by himself and started the rampage by shooting the two people sitting in front of him. The victims were identified as 33-year-old Jillian Johnson and 21-year-old Mayci Breaux.

At least one theatergoer described the attack, saying an older man stood up about 20 minutes into the 7:10 p.m. showing of "Trainwreck" at the Grand 16 theater in Lafayette and began shooting.

"We heard a loud pop we thought was a firecracker," Katie Domingue told The Advertiser.

"He wasn't saying anything. I didn't hear anybody screaming either," said Domingue, who added that she heard about six shots before she and her fiance ran to the nearest exit, leaving behind her shoes and purse.

Stories of heroism emerged with presidential hopeful Gov. Bobby Jindal, who traveled to the scene within hours of the shooting, telling reporters that a teacher who was in the theater jumped in front of a second teacher, taking a bullet for her. The second teacher then managed to pull a fire alarm to alert other moviegoers, he said.

"Her friend literally jumped over her and, by her account, actually saved her life," Jindal said.

President Barack Obama was briefed on the shooting aboard Air Force One by Lisa Monaco, his homeland security adviser, while on his way to Africa for a two-nation visit, the White House said.

Obama asked his team to keep him updated on the investigation and the status of those wounded. He also offered his thoughts and prayers to the community and to the families of those killed.

The shooting took place a week after the man who shot and killed 12 people at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo., was convicted and on the very day a jury was cruel enough to justify the death penalty. But jurors must first hear the defense's arguments for a life term before deciding whether he'll be sentenced to death.

Nine people ranging in age from their late teens to their late 60s were wounded, Craft said. At least one of those was in critical condition. Two were released from the hospital. The condition of the others was not immediately known.

Houser had been arrested and ticketed for several offenses in the past, ranging from arson to selling alcohol to a minor to speeding, authorities said. In Alabama, records show Houser had four speeding tickets and one no-seatbelt ticket between 1981 and 2003. It's not clear where the arson allegedly occurred.

Alabama court records show Houser filed a small claims court lawsuit in 2004 claiming he was injured when he donated plasma at a Phenix City donation center. He asked for $1,800 to pay his emergency room bill and for a narcotics prescription. The case was settled, according to court records.

He had been married once but did not currently have a wife. Police said they had talked to his family in Alabama but he appeared "seemingly estranged" from them.

"It just seems like he was kind of drifting along," Craft said. He had an uncle that once lived in Lafayette, but he died 35 years ago. "We don't know why he decided to stop and stay in Lafayette."

State police superintendent Col. Michael D. Edmonson said there were about 100 people inside the theater at the time of the shooting. Keys, shoes and purses were all left behind.

Early Friday, about a dozen law enforcement personnel were gathered at a Motel 6 in Lafayette, where Houser had been staying. A bomb squad swept the room before going in as a precaution.

At one point, an officer carried out a cardboard box from the room and other officers could be seen knocking on neighboring doors.

Edmonson added that police believe the gunman fired shots only at the theater and had not waged an attack anywhere else beforehand.

He said police saw something suspicious inside the shooter's car and that a bomb-sniffing dog "hit on three different locations" in the vehicle, "so out of an abundance of caution we brought in the bomb squad."

No explosives were found in the car or in the theater complex.

"Trainwreck" star Amy Schumer tweeted: "My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana." The comedy stars Schumer as a magazine writer who decides to live a life of promiscuity after her father convinces her that monogamy isn't realistic, but in spite of her best efforts, finds herself falling in love with one of her interview subjects.

Gov. Jindal called the shooting "an awful night for Louisiana."

"What we can do now is we can pray," Jindal said. "We can hug these families. We can shower them with love, thoughts and prayers."

Lafayette is about 60 miles west of the state capital of Baton Rouge. Outside the movie theater complex hours after the shooting, a couple of dozen police cars were still at the scene, which authorities had cordoned off with police tape as onlookers took photos with their cellphones.

A small group of theater employees stood outside the police perimeter. A man who identified himself as a general manager declined to be interviewed: "We would appreciate it if you could give us some space," he said.

Landry Gbery (pronounced Berry), 26, of Lafayette, was watching a different movie, "Self/less" at the time of the shooting when the lights came up and a voice over the intercom told everyone there was an emergency and they needed to leave.

Gbery said he never heard gunshots, and assumed the emergency was a fire until he got outside and saw a woman lying on the ground.

"I was really anxious for everybody at that point," Gbery said. "Fortunately I was lucky. I took the right exit."

Tanya Clark was at the concession stand in the lobby when she saw people screaming and running past her. She said she immediately grabbed her 5-year-old daughter and ran.

"In that moment, you don't think about anything," Clark, 36, told The New York Times. "That's when you realize that your wallet and phone are not important."

Clark's son Robert Martinez said he saw an older woman run past with blood streaming down her leg, and screaming that someone had shot her.

The Louisiana shooting occurred three years after James Holmes entered a crowded movie theater in suburban Denver and opened fire during the premier of a Batman film, killing 12 people and wounding 70 others.

A jury last week quickly convicted Holmes on 165 counts of murder, attempted murder and other charges, rejecting defense arguments that he was insane and suffering delusions that drove him to the July 20, 2012, attack.

Officials identify victims, gunman in Lafayette theater shooting
July 24, 2015 3:00 AM CDT By Amber Stegall

LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - The two victims who died in the Lafayette theater shooting were identified as Mayci Breaux, 21, of Franklin, who died at the scene, and Jillian Johnson, 33, of Lafayette, who died at the hospital. The shooter has been identified as John Russell Houser, 59, whose last known address was Phenix City, Alabama.

    Mayci Breaux, 21

    Jillian Johnson, 33

The mass theater shooting left nine others injured, including one victim who remained in critical condition at a Lafayette hospital as of 7:30 a.m. Two of the victims taken to the hospital have been released. The nine injured in the shooting range in age from late teens to early 60s.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Thursday at the Grand 16 Theater on Johnson Street in Lafayette. Houser died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before police were able to get into the theater. Col. Mike Edmonson, superintendent of Louisiana State Police, said a total of 13 shots were fired. He added a .40 caliber handgun was found at the scene. Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said 12 ambulances were at the scene within six minutes.

Officials with Louisiana State Police said the bomb squad cleared the theater and CSI collected evidence to try and piece together information to determine why this happened. Authorities said crime scene technicians worked through the night, describing the scene as "pretty horrific." Investigators are trying to trace the gunman's steps for the past few days and their main focus right now is to gather the evidence. They said his record showed he was arrested on an arson charge and a misdemeanor about 10 or 15 years ago.

"This guy was a drifter who happened to be in this theater and took two beautiful lives," Edmonson said.

Officials said about 100 people were inside the theater for a screening of Trainwreck when Houser began shooting. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time. Police said he waited about 20 minutes into the movie before he stood up and opened fire. Craft said the shooter was by himself at the theater and the first two people shot were sitting directly in front of him. He added after the shots were fired, people started rushing out.

"This kind of thing leaves you wondering," Craft said. "Why would a guy come in a theater in this city? We have a relatively safe city - and just randomly start shooting people. It's hard to figure out and he's deceased, so we might not ever know."

Craft said investigators know he was trying to leave and they think he saw two officers who were on the scene within a minute because they were there in the parking lot. According to witnesses, he had turned around and moved against the crowd after possibly spotting the officers. Officials said he parked his car near an exit and had intentions of leaving alive. They also a police dog detected explosives in the car, but investigators said no devices were found in Houser's blue 1995 Lincoln Continental. They added the license plate had been switched on his vehicle.

"I don't know how far into the movie he started shooting," Randall Mann with Acadian Ambulance said. "They thought it was something from the movie. Then, they noticed the flashes of light. That's when everyone noticed and started to run out of the theater."

About a dozen law enforcement personnel were gathered at a Motel 6 in Lafayette early Friday morning, combing through a room where the gunman stayed, according to state police. Trooper said he had been staying there since the beginning of the month. Witnesses said officers took a cardboard box from the room and were knocking on the doors of neighboring rooms. Officials said a search of the car turned up wigs, glasses and other items that could be used to disguise his identity.

He also said anyone who knows Houser should call 337-291-8650 to give authorities whatever information they know about him. Officials have contacted his family members and visited his home in Alabama. They said he seemed to be estranged from his family.

"I want to thank all the law enforcement," Gov. Bobby Jindal said. "Federal, state, local you see everyone working together here. Today is a day that not only angers but also saddens all of us. This should never happen anywhere, but you certainly never imagine, we never imagine it would happen in Louisiana, never imagine it would happen in Lafayette."

Amy Schumer, the star of Trainwreck, tweeted her support for the community Thursday night.

"My heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Louisiana."
Attorney General Buddy Caldwell issued the following statement in response to the shooting:
"Last night, Louisiana became the latest in a terribly long line of states where an obviously unstable individual saw fit to strike out at innocent citizens, killing and wounding many and destroying the lives of their families. These acts are unspeakable tragedies for so many. We must reach out to the survivors and the families of all victims with prayers and assistance, and offer prayers for the souls of those departed. We must also increase our efforts to establish additional mental health alternatives, which can identify and control unstable and violent persons. Teachers, often the daily heroes of our youth, were heroes for everyone last night in the midst of this terrible tragedy. Thank God for their courage."
According to Jindal, it was a heartbreaking night as family members rushed to the hospital hoping their child or loved one wasn't seriously injured. He added the people of Louisiana get very angry when senseless acts of violence like this happens.

Lafayette City-Parish President Joey Durel said Lafayette was named the happiest city in America and will become the happiest city again. He added everyone in the community is family.

Since this is already turning into a gun control fete I feel that it is time to point out GUN FREE ZONES ARE DEATH TRAPS!!!!!

Those poor people in Lafayette were easy marks. One good guy with a gun could have stopped him!
My heart is breaking for Lafayette. Prayers for those injured and the families of those lost.

This is a perfect example that only the law abiding citizens are the ones without guns! When the hell will these anti-gun people wake up and realize that CRIMINALS will ALWAYS have GUNS!!! The rest of us need to defend ourselves and others - like those that think these gun free zones are so wonderful then end up getting shot at or shot. Not to make light of the situation but I'm sure there's a few people that were lucky enough to escape that are second thinking that law.

12 shot in Louisiana theatre last night; 7 shot in Maryland
    – but there’s a huge difference no one will discuss

Written by Allen West on July 24, 2015

I’ll be traveling to Lafayette, Louisiana today for a speaking engagement and my heart goes out to the victims and families of last night’s shooting at the movie theater there. We now know the lone white gunman as John Russel Houser, 59, of Alabama. Houser, 59, who killed himself, is among three people who died, police said. The other two were Mayci Breaux, 21, of Franklin, Louisiana, who died at the theater, and Jillian Johnson, 33, of Lafayette, who died at the hospital.

Of course we shall wait and see if there is the usual massive condemnation emanating from the White House, something tells me there won’t be — unless there is some political advantage to be gained.

I doubt President Obama will concern himself too deeply with the events in red state rural Louisiana. My first thought is, no more gun-free zones, as it seems movie theaters have become.

I arrived back to Texas from New York City after the Stop Iran rally to find the “breaking news” alert. But there was an even more grievous shooting that occurred in the last 24 hours that seems not to have garnered national attention.

As reported by the Baltimore Sun, “At least seven people, including three juveniles — a 13-year-old boy, a 15-year old boy and a 16-year-old girl — were shot in Baltimore Wednesday night, police said. Interim Commissioner Kevin Davis said police have no motive for the shooting but have been given information by the community that he hopes will lead detectives to the shooter or shooters. The 13-year-old boy was shot in the chest, the 15-year-old was shot in the chest and shoulder, and the 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg, police said. All were taken to area hospitals.

“It is certainly unacceptable for this community to see three teenagers being shot on a beautiful summer night like this,” Davis said. “It’s my impression that they’ve had enough.

A 34-year-old man was shot multiple times at 11:09 p.m. in the 1200 block of Clendenin St. in the Penn North neighborhood police said. The man, who was not identified, was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Sixty more people have been killed in Baltimore this year than at the same time last year. Police at this time last year were investigating 177 shootings, including 115 homicides. A total of 347 people have been shot in Baltimore this year.

Wednesday’s violence included a second triple shooting, police said. A 21-year-old man was shot in the foot, and a 29-year-old man was shot in the chest. They were both listed in stable condition. A 37-year-old man was shot in the chest and was listed in critical condition.

Yes, the obvious question is where are the “black lives matter” protests? What is happening in Baltimore is indicative of what is happening all over America in inner city communities — mainly black. We don’t hear about any declarations of senseless violence and condemnation. It becomes more and more apparent that only politically leveraged black lives matter.

And why is there no handwringing about gun violence in these communities, where I can almost guarantee you, there are VERY restrictive gun laws? Somehow guns have been outlawed so only outlaws have the guns and the good, law-abiding citizens live in fear and terror because of the gangs. But where are the 24/7 news crews like we saw over the Freddie Gray episode? Funny how that has truly died down as the truth is being revealed.

What happened in Lafayette, Louisiana is horrible but what is happening in Baltimore is genocidal.

It just never ceases to amaze me what the media will cover. It’s a clear window into their priorities, as well as their political motivations. I want you all to think about this: there have been more people shot in Baltimore than in the combat zone of Afghanistan.

And regardless of what President Obama declares in his little unilateral world, there is still combat and fighting going on in Afghanistan. You can imagine that if there were 347 Americans shot in Afghanistan it would be top line news. Oops, I’m sorry, that’s if the sitting president is Republican. Somehow when it’s a Democrat, the deaths and casualties just do not get wide dissemination. What does all this tell us about the media? Perhaps blacks shooting themselves has become so routine, so matter of fact, it’s not worth being national news, or receiving any attention.

If that’s the case, it speaks volumes about the soft bigotry of low expectations that has invaded the culture. Could it be that in today’s America it’s now widely expected — and maybe accepted — that blacks killing blacks is just par for the course? Move along, nothing to see here. Of course everyone is going apoplectic about the case of Ms. Sandra Bland, whose death has been ruled a suicide by the medical examiner, no evidence of homicide.

So what will the black lives matter activists do now? I guess they’re saying, “darn, we have to wait for another opportunity to run around and make loud noises.” I have a suggestion, take your hypocritical selves to Baltimore — or even decentralize and hit any urban center in America. Find a cause to stand for that is not blatantly and transparently political in nature. We all know you won’t, because Massa George [Soros] has bought y’all with the thirty pieces of silver and you will continue to do his bidding. However, there will come a time, as with the original sellout, Judas, that your conscience will get the best of you. Or perhaps you are truly devoid of any soul.

Yes, it is terrible that folks who just wanted to go out on a Thursday summer night to a movie found themselves in a free fire zone, unarmed. However, this is a regular occurrence in Chicago, Baltimore, Washington DC, and just about every major urban center in America. The difference? Sadly, it comes down to the skin color of the shooter…and the victims. In those cases, what difference at this point does it make?

    http://allenbwest.com/2015/07/12-sho...-will-discuss/

From January through July 18, the number of homicides in Baltimore rose 50 percent to 170 compared to the same time period the year before. The number of nonfatal shootings is up 96 percent to 335, according to statistics from the city’s police department.

Officials say it appears theater shooter "took his time," entered through side door

    Posted: Jul 24, 2015 3:16 PM CDT

LAFAYETTE, LA (WAFB) - Officials have completed processing the scene in their investigation into a deadly shooting at a Lafayette theater and provided updates Friday evening explaining what they have learned so far.

The two victims who died in the shooting were identified as Mayci Breaux, 21, of Franklin, who died at the scene, and Jillian Johnson, 33, of Lafayette, who died at the hospital. The shooter has been identified as John Russell Houser, 59, whose last known address was Phenix City, Alabama. Officials in Alabama said Houser was treated for mental illness in 2008 and 2009.

Investigators said they have learned the shooter did not enter the theater through the front lobby, but through a side door where he parked his car. Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said according to witnesses, he then went back into the theater when a police unit pulled up, fired some more rounds and then took his life. "It appears that the shooter actually took his time and was somewhat methodical as he shot folks from the top of the back of the theater," Gov. Bobby Jindal said.

He added he has been alternating between grief, sadness and anger. He also said this is a time to focus on the victims and their families, as everyone tries to "make sense out of a senseless act." Jindal said the act was barbaric.

The mass theater shooting left nine people injured. Five people remain hospitalized, including one victim who is listed in critical condition at a Lafayette hospital. The other four victims are listed in stable condition. Four of the victims taken to the hospital have been treated and released. The nine injured in the shooting range in age from late teens to early 60s. Officials at Lafayette General Medical Center said five patients were sent to their facility. Two of those were immediately released. The other three are all listed in stable condition. One of those is in intensive care. They said the other six victims went to two other hospitals in the area. Officials also said one of the victims was shot in the stomach, while the other patients had injuries to the arms, legs, etc. They said a Lafayette General employee who was at the theater transported one victim in his own vehicle.

According to Craft, the police officers were equipped with first-responder kits and used them on the wounded victims, which helped stop some of the bleeding and stabilized the victims so they could be taken to the hospital. Craft said 12 ambulances were at the scene within six minutes. Authorities will continue to hold the scene through out the weekend.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Thursday at the Grand 16 Theatre on Johnson Street in Lafayette. Houser died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound before police were able to get into the theater. Col. Mike Edmonson, superintendent of Louisiana State Police, said ATF has confirmed the weapon used was a high-point, .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun. He added it was purchased at a pawn shop in Phenix City, Alabama in February 2014 and that ATF said the purchase was illegal.

Officials said 15 shell casings were recovered from various areas of the theater. Investigators have reportedly determined which seats people were in once they were shot. They will interview victims to be able to recreate the setting of the theater before the shooting. Edmonson described it as "a horrific scene in there." Authorities hope to open a counseling shelter in Lafayette on Monday to provide services to people who need to talk about the tragedy.

They believe he made it into Louisiana on July 2 or July 3. Craft said he has been "up and down the interstate a few times." Investigators said his record showed he was arrested on an arson charge and a misdemeanor about 10 or 15 years ago.

Officials said about 100 people were inside the theater for a screening of 'Trainwreck' when Houser began shooting. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time. Police said he waited about 20 minutes into the movie before he stood up and opened fire. Craft said the shooter was by himself at the theater and the first two people shot were sitting directly in front of him. He added after the shots were fired, people started rushing out.

About a dozen law enforcement personnel were gathered at a Motel 6 in Lafayette early Friday morning, combing through a room where the gunman stayed, according to state police. Troopers said he had been staying there since the beginning of the month. Officials said a search of the car turned up wigs, glasses and other items that could be used to disguise his identity.

Craft said there have been calls about the alleged shooter that have resulted in leads. He said businesses in the Lafayette area and even in Lake Charles have contacted authorities with information. Craft added there were 300 people inside the Grand 16 Theater at the time of shooting and that 25 tickets had been sold for 'Trainwreck'. He also said of those 300 people inside the theater at the time, 160 have been interviewed. Authorities said Houser spoke to people about maybe opening a business in Lafayette. Craft said journals were found in his hotel room that investigators are going through to figure out what happened.

The Lafayette Police Department and Louisiana State Police are working together on the investigation.

A Tale of Two Shootings (Louisiana & Pennsylvania)
    – Why Gun Control is Killing Us

    By JoshuaMark5 on July 24, 2015

In the wake of Thursday night’s Louisiana shooting, the media has made much ado about the President’s “prediction” that law gun control laws would lead to more shootings. But the reality is that strict gun control laws made Thursday night’s shooting at the Lafayette Grand Theater possible.

While facts are still pouring in, here’s what we already know:

    1) The perpetrator chose to commit his crime in a gun free zone. The Grand Theater chain does NOT allow concealed firearms on its premises — even by lawfully permitted concealed carry holders. This discourages law-abiding citizens from being able to defend themselves and others.

    2) The shooter was a prohibited purchaser because of mental health issues, yet that did not physically prevent him from acquiring firearms.

    3) The gunman had been denied a concealed carry permit years ago, yet he still managed to illegally carry a gun.

Bottom line: Gun control failed to protect honest civilians in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Contrast Thursday night’s shooting to one that occurred one year ago today.

On July 24, 2014, a nutcase walked into a Darby, Pennsylvania hospital, intent on killing as many people as possible. But the gunman hadn’t counted on the fact that his #1 intended target — his doctor — had defied the hospital’s “no guns allowed” policy and was carrying a gun of his own.

Dr. Lee Silverman is a lawful permit holder who regularly carries a handgun. Having come under fire, he crouched behind a desk and shot back, hitting the perp three times in the mid-section.

Even though the bad guy was able to murder one person, authorities have credited Dr. Silverman with halting a mass shooting in progress.

Guns in good people’s hands are saving lives. But the President’s approach — which denies guns to law-abiding citizens — prevents potential victims from bringing mass shootings to an abrupt end.

I would at least outlaw those gun free zone signs. It advertises to the idiots to come in and shoot up the place.
