This is a dangerous precedent. Robert E. Lee's statue is there because he is an American soldier. He fought for the United States before the civil war and worked towards reconciliation between North and South after the civil war. He had a note worthy military career and fought for freed slaves to have public schools. His former home is the resting place for thousands of our military. He was president of a college that still stands today. He has been on United States postage stamps several times. Not just the South honors him. He also was well known and liked in the North. If the United States, our country, has no issue with him, why should you??!!

If we start taking down symbols of our military veterans just because not everyone agrees with a war they fought in, where does it end? Millions didn't agree with the reasons behind Vietnam, but we still appreciate and celebrate our vets. We don't disregard their efforts or sacrifices. No one is taking down any Vietnam memorials! We wouldn't dream of it!

That statue has been a part of New Orleans since 1884 and if you think that tearing it down at the expense of the tax payers will make all of the race relations miraculously better, you are an idiot. No one thought it was divisive or racist until the MSM told you

Just for the record: Confederate soldiers ,sailors, and Marines that fought in the Civil war were made U.S. Veterans by an act of Congress in in 1957, U.S. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, Approved 23 May, 1958. This made all Confederate Army/ Navy/ Marine Veterans equal to U.S. Veterans. Additionally, under U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by the 17th Congress on 26 Feb 1929 the War Department was directed to erect headstones and recognize Confederate grave sites as U.S. War dead grave sites. Just for the record the last Confederate veteran died in 1958. So, in essence, when you remove a Confederate statue, monument or headstone, you are in fact, removing a statue, monument or head stone of a U.S. VETERAN.

Robert E. Lee Was A Far, Far Better Man Than Mitch Landrieu…
    July 12, 2015[/I]

…and therefore it is no particular surprise that New Orleans’ squalid, petty mayor – whose record in governance shows endemic corruption and incompetence so basic that simple things like potholes go untended and violent crime has begun to threaten the very fabric of society – would make it his project to tear down the monument to Lee from the center of the circle which also bears his name.

Landrieu, the scion of a fading New Orleans political dynasty known mostly for crony capitalism, usurpation of power and self-dealing graft, has seen his stock fade badly in the past year as the strong New Orleans economy he inherited from Ray Nagin has gradually slowed – at the same time that a crime wave of such force as to cause a panic across the Crescent City has gone unchecked by the police force broken by Landrieu’s having brought the Justice Department in to “reform” it.

Amid the mounting evidence of his failure in office, some effect of which is that Landrieu was once almost openly bragging of his ability to beat David Vitter in the governor’s race this fall and is now long since forgotten as a candidate, the mayor is now attempting to pander to the Democrat base voters in that city by jumping on board the vulgar politically correct train and demanding a removal of the Lee statue in downtown New Orleans.

Landrieu threw in an apology for slavery along with his cheap histrionics about removing the city’s historical monuments. We weren’t aware that the Landrieu family kept slaves, or that Mitch or his father had permitted slavery in the city.

Because there had to be more reason for the apology other than white guilt or baseless sucking up to the race industry.

Landrieu said that taking the Lee statue down would be done in pursuit of “unity,” which is laughable considering who Robert E. Lee actually was.

Yes, Lee fought for the Confederacy. If that’s all you know of the man you are ignorant of American history and unqualified to make decisions about preserving it. You are on the same level as the barbarian goons from ISIS who destroy monuments and historical artifacts not fitting their 7th-century interpretation of Islam, or the Taliban who obliterate the Buddhist statues at Bamiyan.

Or, in a slightly more modernist context, the Soviet-era apparatchiks busily airbrushing the images of the personae non grata from official photos during Stalin’s time.

Robert E. Lee is, for those who aren’t ignorant of the man and his story, a quite unifying figure. Lee could easily have gone out in a blaze of glory, or taken to the wilderness and fight on as a guerrilla insurgent commander piling up bodies and continuing the Civil War to almost endless slaughter. He did none of that, despite having his personal fortune taken away and his post-war prospects limited to penury and shame. He had little personal interest to be served by surrendering at Appomattox Courthouse, but that’s what he did. Why? Because for Lee, continuing the war when it was lost would have been morally wrong. And upon his surrender he pledged himself to reconciliation between North and South.

Reconciliation. Get it? As in, reunification?

Here’s a story illustrating that, unlike the cheap words we expect and are delivered from tawdry politicians like Mitch Landrieu, that pledge was backed by integrity, courage and action… Landrieu threw in an apology for slavery along with his cheap histrionics about removing the city’s historical monuments. Here’s a story illustrating that, unlike the cheap words we expect and are delivered from tawdry politicians like Mitch Landrieu, that pledge was backed by integrity, courage and...

It was a warm Sunday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and an older man, one of the church’s many distinguished communicants, who had spent the last four years in war, was sitting in his customary pew. With his shoulders rounded, his middle thickened, his hair snow-white and beard gray, as usual, he attracted the attention of the rest of the church. But then so did another parishioner.

As the minister, Dr. Charles Minnergerode, was about to administer Holy Communion, a tall, well-dressed black man sitting at the western galley (which was reserved for Negroes) unexpectedly advanced to the communion table-unexpectedly because his this had never happened here before. Suddenly, the image of Richmond redux was conjured up-a flashback to prewar years. Usually whites received communion first, then blacks-a small but strictly adhered to ritual, repeated so often that to alter it was unthinkable. This one small act, then, was like a large frontier separating two worlds: the first being that of the antebellum South, the second being that of post-Civil War America. The congregation froze; those who had been ready to go forward and kneel at the altar rail remained fixed in their pews. Momentarily stunned, Minnergerode himself was clearly embarrassed. The horror-and surprise-of the congregation were no doubt largely visceral, but Minnergerode’s silent retreat was evident. It was one thing for the white South to endure defeat and poverty, or to accept the fact that slaves were now free; it was quite another for a black man to stride up to the front of the church as though an equal. And not just at any church, but here, at the sanctuary for Richmond’s elite, the wealthy, the well-bred, the high-cultured.

The black man slowly lowered his body, kneeling, while the rest of the congregation tensed in their pews. For his part, the minister stood, clearly uncomfortable and still dumbfounded. After what seemed to be an interminable amount of time-although it was probably only seconds-the white man arose (Lee), his gait erect, head up and eyes proud, and walked quietly up the aisle to the chancel rail. His face was a portrait of exhaustion, and he looked far older than most people had remembered from when the war had just begun. These days had been hard on him. Recently, in a rare, unguarded moment he had uncharacteristically blurted out, “I’m homeless-I have nothing on earth.”

Yet these Richmonders, like all of the South, still looked to him for a sense of purpose and guidance. No less so now as, with quiet dignity and self-possession, he knelt down to partake of the communion, along with the same rail with the black man.

Watching Robert E. Lee, the other communicants slowly followed in his path, going forward to the altar, and, with a mixture of reluctance and fear, hope and awkward expectation, into the future.

Lee’s sterling reputation among his contemporaries came from selflessness. For example, while commander of the Army of Northern Virginia he freed his family’s slaves at great cost to his personal fortune; to do so left him largely penniless. The war cost him his family’s lands as well; what is now Arlington National Cemetery was actually Lee’s estate and in what was seen as a grave insult the federal government decreed it would be a graveyard for the Union’s dead. He made no complaint about that decision, and quietly accepted a position as president of Washington College, which is now known as Washington & Lee University, in order to help mold the next generation of Southerners to be good American citizens.

As to slavery, Lee despised it, and openly so. He shocked many in the Southern upper class when he said…

So far from engaging in a war to perpetuate slavery, I am rejoiced that Slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interest of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this that I would have cheerfully lost all that I have lost by the war, and have suffered all that I have suffered to have this object attained.

This was a great man who chose to fight for a doomed, and damned, cause. His choice was not an enthusiastic one. He was not a great believer in the Confederate cause, but he could not bring himself to fight against his family, neighbors and friends…

With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commission in the Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may never be needed, I hope I may never be called on to draw my sword…
This after Lee was offered the position of supreme commander of the Union Army by President Lincoln, which for his personal purposes would have been a far more plum assignment than that of a startup, undersupplied rebel army defending a quickly beleaguered fledgling nation.

Lee acted against his personal interests out of a sense of duty and honor. When has Mitch Landrieu, who builds streetcar lines and gets tax breaks for real estate developers, so as to benefit his own bank-book, ever done the same?

America, and New Orleans, is in the deplorable shape it is currently in because our modern society produces Mitch Landrieus when we desperately need Robert E. Lees. No wonder the memories of great men are brought low by the petty hacks from whom we are forced to choose as our leaders.

Vigilantes play DARE with the confederate flag: New social media craze has activists ripping symbol down from homes and cars and posting the risky videos online

The trend shows people running up to other people's vehicles and properties and tearing down Confederate flags

In what is supposedly the original video of the challenge, a man runs up to a house and rips the flag down from a pole and runs back to the car

Challenge emerged after national debate over Confederate flag flying in a war memorial on South Carolina State Capitol grounds - that flag has since been removed from the grounds of the statehouse

By Kelly McLaughlin 07:54 EST, 14 July 2015

A new challenge hitting social media is encouraging people to film themselves and others tearing down Confederate flags from other people's properties and vehicles.

The trend, called the #NoFlagginChallenge or #DestroyConfederateFlag, shows people running up to cars and homes, tearing down flags and running away.

In what appears to be the original video, a man identifying as Jamari Williams posted footage on Facebook July 11 showing a man running up to a house and tearing a Confederate flag from a flagpole.

A second man, who is filming the incident, is heard laughing and saying 'no flagging'. The video's caption reads, '#noFlagginchallenge snatch & run LMAO f*** the flag', according to The Blaze.

Williams's Facebook claims that he lives in Sarasota, Florida, and is the CEO of the record label Blowin BANDZ ENT.

After Sarasota Police caught wind of the video, a spokesman on the department's Facebook page encouraged those who had information about the vidto to come forward.

The Sarasota Police Department is aware of this video and we are looking into this incident but we have not received any reports of a theft of a flag from a residence,' the statement said. 'Also, we do not know exactly where this video occurred & whether it was in our jurisdiction.'

Videos just like Williams's have been popping up across the nation on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Vine as part of the challenge.

One video shows a man pull two flags off the back of a pickup truck and throwing them on to the pavement while another video shows a man jump out of his car during slow-moving traffic to rip a Confederate flag off of a semi-truck.

An Instagram account dedicated to the challenge shows videos of people committing such acts, including some that turn violent.

In one, two black men approached a white man waving a Confederate flag in what appears to be a crowd of people, and a fight ensues. The video ends with the man who was originally waving the flag lying on the ground.

Williams's video went viral shortly after activist Bree Newsome scaled the flagpole on South Carolina's Capitol grounds to remove a Confederate flag from a war memorial. She was arrested shortly after.

The flag in front of the state's capitol has since been removed by government officials, but not before sparking a nationwide discussion.

The fact that if was flying was brought to the public's attention last month after nine people were killed during a Bible study at a historical black church in Charleston on June 17.

Police say the white suspect, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, who is now in custody, was motivated by racial hatred.

The word you're looking for is "vandals" not vigilantes. Oh wait I forget, political correctness and riding the current opinion wave supersedes property laws and basic human decency.

    ....

Ummm....this is theft no matter how you look at it. There are more important things going on in this world than whether someone is flying a flag. Stop watching TV/the media hype things up and go get a job, go to college, read a book/learn something! If you want things to really change, stealing someone's personal property is not the way to do it!

    ...

This whole issue is a time bomb just waiting to go off. Lets see what happens when some homeowner takes a stand to defend his home and civil rights and someone is shot... It will happen for sure.

    ...

That is like me stealing someone's rainbow flag, 'Bama Nation Banner, or any other flag. Just because you don't like it - doesn't mean you can steal it or take that right away from someone!

All the problems are caused by statues and moneuments that have stood for over a hundred years, right ??

Since the Charleston, South Carolina shooting, where a white man shot and killed nine black men and women, Mayor Mitch Landrieu of New Orleans has mentioned that he planned to replace Robert E. Lee Circle with another public figure.

Landrieu’s rationale? The Confederacy is racist and therefore, in order to be politically correct, anything in the city of New Orleans remotely related to the Confederacy must be removed immediately.

Today, Landrieu has called for the removal and replacement of these four Confederacy-related monuments throughout the city: General Robert E. Lee Monument, known as Lee Circle, the General P.G.T. Beauregard Equestrian Statue, the Jefferson Davis Monument and the Liberty Monument.

According to Landrieu, public monuments in the city “inspire, include, & celebrate life, liberty & pursuit of happiness. Should show world we thrive on diversity.”

But, that is not what these public spaces are for. Though Landrieu sees the Confederacy as racist and anything related to it as offensive, Lee Circle and the other monuments are historical pieces that will forever be ingrained in the city’s history.

These monuments have nothing to do with racism. They have to do with history.

When we first said goodbye to Lee Circle and PGT Beauregard, we asked where Landrieu would stop in his effort for everything politically correct?

What about the street names in the city that are named after Catholic saints? Should those be renamed because many in the city are not even Catholic or maybe they do not agree with the teachings of the Catholic church?

Or the rainbow gay pride flag that flies throughout the city. Should the city ban these flags because many Christians see them as offensive to their religious convictions?

The slippery-slope with political correctness will never end once public officials try to erase history and distort it in a way in which historical figures are not seen as men of their time, but rather racist, bigoted individuals who should have been more progressive.

Furthermore, what about Landrieu’s party affiliation? He and the rest of his political dynasty family are Democrats, which is the family that began the Ku Klux Klan, the most famous white-supremacist hate group in American history.

Should not Landrieu rebuke his party affiliation, considering the Democratic party could be offensive to anyone who is not a racist, hateful individual?

Also, Landrieu is largely out-of-touch with the city, which has been plagued by violent crime and a rising murder rate.

Just last week, we reported how there were four homicides in just six hours. Every week, we hear about how understaffed and underpaid the New Orleans Police Department is.

Even last month, NOPD Officer Daryle Holloway was shot and killed by a violent criminal. Now, we are finding out that another NOPD officer allegedly withheld evidence on the case from investigators.

All of this and yet Landrieu’s priorities are solely set on removing some statues that the NAACP finds offensive.

The fact, is that Robert E. Lee and the rest of these monuments are New Orleans. The city is the epitome of the deep South in a way. New Orleans is filled with culture, its historical roots are incredible and it thrives on the life and spirit of the Southern people.

With the removal of these monuments, that culture and history will be forever stripped, white-washed and the city will never be the same. Landrieu can change out the statues all he wants, but the history of the city can not change and we hope it will not be forgotten.

Say goodbye to New Orleans as we know it.

Camera captures 'kid' with gun in afternoon shootout
    July 16, 2015 9:17 PM CDT

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - New Orleans police responded Thursday to shots fired on the outskirts of the French Quarter in an incident that was captured on surveillance video.

Mobile users can see the video here: http://shout.lt/7SXj

At around 2 p.m., 911 dispatchers received multiple calls of gunfire in the area of Bienville and Basin streets. When officers arrived, they found multiple bullet casings on the ground and a black Nissan Altima with multiple bullet holes in the 100 block of North Roman Street.

Surveillance video shows what looks like a young teen firing a semi-automatic pistol with an extended clip at a dark-colored car. "Fifteen-year-old kid it looks like, shooting with a clip on a pistol running," said business owner Sal Palmisano. "And then they went another 10 blocks away or something like that."

No one was injured in the incident. "About 12 shots about 5 feet from the front door," Palmisano said. "You can see the smoke coming out of the guns. It was pretty ridiculous. Just another day here. It's not good for business."

Police are currently looking for the suspect. "We are not going to tolerate anything like this occurring," said NOPD Lt. Keith Sanders. "We are going to try to bring these suspects to justice as quickly as possible."

Palmisano, however, questioned the city's priorities. "It's pathetic," he said. "We're worried about statues and we've got this going on. I don't think the statue was involved in this, and it's not going to be about statues it's about getting these kids off the street."

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - The NOPD arrested a 13-year-old male Friday in connection with the sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl in New Orleans East. The assault occurred July 10. The victim reported that she was outside an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Downman Road around 2 p.m. when an unknown male lured her into an alleyway behind the complex and sexually assaulted her.

During the course of the investigation, detectives received a CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) match from DNA evidence collected from the incident that identified the 13-year-old male as the suspect. Sex Crimes Detectives located him Friday and booked him with one count of aggravated rape.

The investigation is ongoing and detectives are looking into whether the suspect could be responsible for similar incidents in the area. Sex Crimes Detectives can be contacted at (504) 658-5523.

Note : in order for him to be in CODIS ... his DNA is already on file with Law Enforcement, as a victim or as a criminal. Sad.

Black woman who defends Confederate flag claims slavery was a choice - as new poll shows the majority of African-Americans find battle symbol racist while whites believe it represents Southern pride

Karen Cooper from Virginia claims the battle symbol 'represents freedom'

Claims she defends the flag against those who 'worship ignorance'

Poll by CNN found 57 per cent of Americans think flag represents Southern Pride
Around 72 per cent of African-Americans believe it defines racism

Majority however believe it should be taken down from public buildings

By Wills Robinson 12:03 EST, 2 July 2015

A black woman who believes 'slavery was a choice' has said she defends the Confederate flag because it 'represents freedoms'.

Virginia resident Karen Cooper revealed she proudly waves the battle symbol as a new poll reveals the majority of African-Americans believe it stands for racism, while whites say it depicts Southern pride.

In an interview for the documentary Battle Flag, Cooper defends the flag against those who 'worship ignorance, historical revisionism and political correctness' as it symbolizes a move away from the 'tyranny' of big government.

The former member of the Nation of Islam has now joined the Virginia Flaggers, a group she found through the Tea Party, and has denounced its roots in slavery.

'I'm not advocating slavery or think that it was right. It wasn't and none of my friends think it was. It was just something that happened. It didn't just happen in the South — it happened worldwide.'

Cooper added that slavery was a choice, because they could choose to die.

In her argument she quotes Patrick Henry, an activist in Virginia in the 1770s, who said: 'Give me liberty, or give me death.'

She insists she would choose death if slavery was still around today.

'I feel I'm a slave now because the federal government does control me. I can't smoke what I want to smoke. I can't drink what I want to drink. If I want to put something into my body, it's my body, not theirs,' she added. 'That's tyranny!'

'But yet and still, it's only the Southerners and only the battle flag that has all the weight and the guilt on it. It's not right,' she added.

Her interview comes amid heated debate over the flag's meaning, which has seen politicians and members of the public call for it to be taken down from government buildings.

A poll conducted by CNN found 57 per cent of Americans see the flag more as a symbol of Southern pride than as a symbol of racism.

Around 72 per cent of African-Americans see the Confederate flag as a symbol of racism, while just 25 per cent of whites agree.

In the South, only 11 per cent of black people see it as a symbol of pride.

Those with a formal education among whites are less likely to see it as a symbol of pride (51 per cent) while 41 per cent of those with a college degree believes it depicts racism.

Among those whites who do not have a college degree, 73 per cent say it's a sign of Southern pride, 18 per cent racism.

However a majority (55 per cent) believe the flag should be moved from any building, excluding museums.

Cooper's interview is part of an ongoing multimedia documentary" by filmmakers Logan Jaffe and Zachary Sigelko, called Battle Flag.

Rev. Clenard Childress, Jr., a spokesman for the pro-life group L.E.A.R.N., spoke to OneNewsNow from the NAACP Convention in Philadelphia.

"Right now I think the African-American community is quite hypocritical and short-sighted when it comes to being in an uproar about the Confederate flag and totally ignore the 1,786 African-American children who are killed each day in the womb," he stated.

In fact, he says every two weeks abortion providers kill more African-American preborn babies than the Ku Klux Klan killed in 15 years – something he contends is totally ignored by African-American leadership. The pro-life leader believes one reason for that is heavy contributions from Planned Parenthood to organizations such as the NAACP "that has bought their silence."

OBAMA CALLS FOR TEA PARTY FLAG TO BE BANNED

Speaking at an NAACP dinner this evening, President Obama called for a ban on the Revolutionary War era Gadsden flag which has been widely used as a banner of the Tea Party.

Speaking at an NAACP dinner this evening, President Obama called for a ban on the Revolutionary War era Gadsden flag which has been widely used as a banner of the Tea Party.

Washington (ONN): President Obama outlined an ambitious roadmap for criminal justice reform during an address at the NAACP convention Tuesday.

In a 45-minute speech, Obama called for reducing or eliminating mandatory minimum sentences, reviewing the use of the solitary confinement and banning of Confederate and Tea Party Flags on public property, among other things.

“Any system that allows us to turn a blind-eye to hopelessness and despair, that’s not a justice system, that’s an injustice system,” Obama said Tuesday. “Justice is not only the absence of oppression, it’s the absence of racist, divisive symbols in our public discourse.”

The speech varied, with Obama at times speaking passionately about the need for reform, and at other times citing the successful flag bannings in South Carolina and other places.

Obama’s remarks included a litany of daunting statistics: that America is home to 5% of world’s population but 25% of world’s racism, that African Americans and Latinos make up 30% of the U.S. population, but 60% of American inmates. But Obama said he’s found hope in the fact that politicians on both sides of the aisle have taken up the issue.

The initiatives have not been without criticism, however—lawmakers have long called for more action on policies that reduce sentences and provide more opportunities to communities that are more often impacted by tough sentencing laws. And tax breaks to states that use Confederate flags in their emblems.

The speech came at the start of a week marked by hefty achievements by the Obama administration on the criminal justice front. On Monday, Obama reduced the sentences of 46 federal inmates who had been incarcerated for committing non-violent, low-level drug offenses over the past two decades. The new round of commutations brings Obama’s total issued up to 89—more than any U.S. president since Lyndon Johnson. The commutations were the latest in the administration’s effort to rollback some of the damage caused by the nation’s drug laws.
