Majority see Confederate flag as symbol of pride, not hate
The Hill - Ben Kamisar - 6 hrs ago

A majority of Americans view the Confederate flag more as a symbol of Southern pride than racism, according to a new poll.

Fifty-seven percent of Americans said they see the flag as evoking Southern pride in the CNN/ORC poll released Thursday, compared to 33 percent who believe it is racist. Those numbers show little movement since a similar poll from 2000.

Black and white Americans have very different views on whether the flag is a symbol of pride or a symbol of hate.

Two-thirds of whites believe the flag represents Southern pride, while only 28 percent believe it has any ties to racism.

That perspective is the opposite among blacks — 72 percent believe the flag is a symbol of racism.

The majority of Americans, both black and white, believe that the flag should be removed from all government property except for museums.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) called on her state Legislature to remove the Confederate flag from the Capitol grounds in response to the killings last month of nine African-Americans at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C. The shooter allegedly was seeking to start a race war and posed in pictures with the Confederate flag.

CONFEDERATE FLAG: It’s Only a Racist Symbol When White People Use It

Why is it that the Confederate flag is a symbol of hate against Black Americans, however, its only offensive when others display it?

Look at these hip hop stars sporting the confederate flag! No one cared about it then!

    Some Fights You'll Never Win
    June 24, 2015 - 12:32AM by: Michael Z. Williamson

So, even though some murderous little punk wore the flags of two defunct nations on his jacket, it inevitably became about the Confederate battle banner. Which doesn't fly over the SC capital, but what do facts matter?

Several major retailers stopped selling merchandise with that image, and, under pressure, eBay and Amazon folded, too. They'll still sell Swastikas, SS death's heads, The Turner Diaries, etc, but those are okay, I guess. So it started with me telling Amazon, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!:

And it's going viral, and seems to have started a meme. Someone just sent me these:

    Open letter to TV Land...

So you take Dukes of Hazzard off the air because of the "Confederate Flag".

I looked over your schedule to help you free yourself of future controversy.

First up...The Beverly Hillbillies. Rich rebels with guns and illegal moonshine who proudly wave the "Confederate Flag"...THIS SHOW MUST GO.

Second...Hogan's Heroes...are you kidding me, Nazis with swastika armbands and sub-machine guns holding Americans in a concentration camp, and it's a comedy, I think not...THIS SHOW MUST GO.

And third, I Love Lucy. You may not know it, but Lucille Ball was a card carrying Communist. A Communist comedy on your network...THIS SHOW MUST GO.

And don't get me started on the gun crazy villains on Gunsmoke and Bonanza.

Yes, this all seems absurd, but so is taking off a show like Dukes of Hazzard. I've seen all the shows, and not once did the Duke boys ram the General Lee in a church and start killing people.

(If anyone agrees, please share. Thank you.)

Liberals Create Map of “Offensive” American Landmarks To Attack Next
    Lindsey Bruce 06/25/2015

Liberals across the country are banning together on social media to share geographic locations of what they find to be”offensive” landmarks.

An article on the website “fusion” is asking for people around the country to fill out forms and report where there is an image that could be considered racially offensive.

    The article reads: http://fusion.net/story/155373/help-...e-confederacy/

“Once the flag is down, maybe the state can take a look at the University of South Carolina—specifically, the Wade Hampton residence hall. The building is named after a former Civil War general, governor, and senator, whose Red Shirts supporters terrorized black South Carolinians to keep them from voting.

Also check out the multiple South Carolina high schools, cities, and roads named in his honor.

The Civil War ended 150 years ago, but physical signs of its presence are seen all over the South: monuments, courthouses, schools, cities, counties. They can even be found in places you wouldn’t expect, as far afield as Ridgefield, Washington, or Helena, Montana.

We pulled together all the mentions we could find of monuments to the Confederacy and its leaders off Wikipedia and created the map below. The highlighted regions are the former Confederate States of America.

If you know of any public locations marking the Confederate legacy that are not listed on this map, please fill out this form or leave a comment with the information. We’ll update this document with verified additions as we receive them.”
When will liberals understand that it’s the history of this nation that makes us who we are and shows us how far we’ve come. Appreciating the sacrifice of the men who died fighting for this country is not the same as agreeing with mentalities of the civil war era. America is the greatest nation in the world because of our ability to overcome tribulation. The truth of the matter is, if we wipe out all traces of our past it will inevitably hurt our future. And with the direction this country is headed, we really can’t afford anymore damage.

Millions Are “Sharing” What Cooter From Dukes of Hazzard Just Posted On Facebook

The Dukes of Hazzard was loved by many.

While liberals push for the removal of the confederate flag in the south, many aren’t willing to abandon its historical significance so quickly. Ben Jones, the man who played “Cooter” on the original show, is one of those.

    According to Conservative Tribune: http://conservativetribune.com/coote...zzard-defiant/

Even the classic “General Lee” from the “Dukes of Hazzard” TV show hasn’t escaped the wrath of the perpetually offended in the wake of the Charleston, S.C., attack. They have begun attacking the widely loved orange 1969 Dodge Charger emblazoned with a Confederate flag on its roof.

But Ben Jones, best known as “Cooter” from the popular show, isn’t taking the attacks on his beloved General Lee lying down, instead choosing to make a defiant stand in defense of both the car and the flag.

Jones noted that although the flag had been removed from such businesses as Walmart, Target and Amazon, it will never be removed from the Cooter’s stores or museums.

    Here’s what he wrote:

Historians say fleur-de-lis has troubled history

USA Today Network Wynton Yates, WWL-TV, New Orleans, La. 11:22 a.m. EDT July 10, 2015

NEW ORLEANS – The fleur-de-lis is a symbol that is deeply ingrained in Louisiana's history. Seen in architecture, the state flag and on the helmets of the Saints, it's everywhere.

But while it is now seen as the mark of the state, it was once used to mark slaves. And some may wonder whether there are parallels to the Confederate flag.

"Code noir, those words are French and mean black code," said slave historian Dr. Ibrahima Seck.

The black code was a set of regulations adopted in Louisiana in 1724 from other French colonies around the world, meant to govern the state's slave population. Seck said those rules included branding slaves with the fleur-de-lis as punishment for running away.

"He would be taken before a court and the sentence would be being branded on one shoulder and with the fleur-de-lis, and then they would crop their ears," Seck said.

Seck said if that slave ran away a second time, he or she would be branded again, but with another brutality added. Their hamstrings would be cut.

To him, this symbol only brings sad thoughts.

"As an African I find it painful, and I think people whose ancestors were enslaved here may feel it even harder than I do as an African," Seck said.

Tulane history professor Terence Fitzmorris said the fleur-de-lis has roots in the French the revolution and, similar to other symbols, was used as a mark of supremacy.

"It was a brutal way of scarring someone and also identifying someone as a particular troublemaker," Fitzmorris said.

Knowing the symbol has that dark history, should it be compared to the likes of the Confederate flag?

    Fitzmorris said no.

"The fleur de lis was the symbol of a monarchy. The United States of America was a slave-holding republic, not just the South. Where do you stop? Do you get rid of all symbols?

Seck agrees, saying that the symbol has been embraced by the city as one of unity

Everything is racist. A cup of tea because British owned slaves and drank tea while abusing them. Air, because men took breaths while owning slaves. Grass, because they walked on the grass, farms, houses, dust, ,,,,,,, ect ect ect When will people learn to let go of the past and work toward a future worth living in? I'm not saying "ignore the past". Or even forgetting it. But learn from the mistakes of the past and move on, stop dwelling in the hate of yesterday, and start living, truly LIVING in the opportunity of today and the promise of tomorrow.

    ..

We are fortunate to live in a country where so many can spend so much time worrying about nothing

    ..

All this political correctness is offensive. Too many overly sensitive people...

    ..

Nope - If the stars and bars had to be banned, then so does this. At least the Confederate flag was never branded into anybody. How about the state flag of Oklahoma? That has an Indian drum on it and surely that must be offensive to Native Americans. And why does the state flag of Hawaii still have a Union Jack on it?

    ..

So much for freedom of expression. Everyday I'm offended especially when people wear something that shouldn't our the fact that almost all of the clothes I look for for my 5 year old daughter has less than an inch inseam in the crotch area. So what does this say that we should focus ourselves on something from hundreds of years ago rather than focus on our children today learning to respect themselves and their bodies, right? How bout we focus on today and tomorrow and stop worrying about yesterday. It's gone!

    ...

Hey, guess what, LSU's mascot and motto are also rooted in the Confederacy! Going to change that? Hey, guess what, slavery was in America since its founding. Shall we ban the American flag too? Hey, hey, Africans sold their fellow man into slavery! Can we ban Africa? Hey, Irish indentured servants ie white slaves lived in America. Do Irish defendants also deserve reparation? Where is the line. Enough is enough.

What frustrates me is that people complain about slavery when neither they, nor their parents and most likely grandparents were not slaves. And they don't even know that North America was a bit player in the slave trade....only 4% of captured Africans were delivered to the USA. The rest to the Caribbean, Central America and South America namely Brazil. Click on this link to read about and view the Atlantic Slave trade....unbelievable. The next time I see people shooting off their mouths about slavery, I am gonna tell them to go to those other regions and take it up. I am fed up, and sick and tired of their whining.

    The slaves that time forgot

We've all been taught the horror's of the African slave trade. It's in all the school books and in plenty of Hollywood movies. But for some reason the largest group of slaves in the British Colonies in the 17th Century doesn't get mentioned at all: the Irish.

Most people have heard of the Great Famine, which reduced the population of Ireland by around 25%. That pales in comparison to the disaster that England inflicted upon Ireland between 1641 and 1652, when the population of Ireland fell from 1,466,000 to 616,000.

    Then things got worse.

What to do with the Irish?

From the Tudor reconquest of Ireland until Irish Independence in 1921, the English puzzled over the problem of what to do with all those Irish people. They were the wrong religion. They spoke the wrong language. But the big problem was that there were just too many of them.

The English had been practicing a slow genocide against the Irish since Queen Elizabeth, but the Irish bred too fast and were tough to kill. On the other side of the Atlantic, there was a chronic labor shortage (because the local natives tended to die out too quickly in slavery conditions). Putting two and two together, King James I started sending Irish slaves to the new world. The first recorded sale of Irish slaves was to a settlement in the Amazon in 1612, seven years before the first African slaves arrived in Jamestown.

The Proclamation of 1625 by James II made it official policy that all Irish political prisoners be transported to the West Indies and sold to English planters. Soon Irish slaves were the majority of slaves in the English colonies.

In 1629 a large group of Irish men and women were sent to Guiana, and by 1632, Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat in the West Indies. By 1637 a census showed that 69% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves, which records show was a cause of concern to the English planters. But there were not enough political prisoners to supply the demand, so every petty infraction carried a sentence of transporting, and slaver gangs combed the country sides to kidnap enough people to fill out their quotas.

The slavers were so full of zest that they sometimes grabbed non-Irishmen. On March 25, 1659, a petition was received in London claiming that 72 Englishmen were wrongly sold as slaves in Barbados, along with 200 Frenchmen and 7-8,000 Scots.
So many Irish slaves were sent to Barbados, between 12,000 and 60,000, that the term "barbadosed" began to be used.

By the 1630's, Ireland was the primary source of the English slave trade.

    And then disaster struck.

    Cromwell

After Oliver Cromwell defeated the royalists in the English Civil War, he turned to Ireland, who had allied themselves with the defeated royalists. What happened next could be considered genocide. The famine (caused by the English intentionally destroying foodstocks) and plague that followed Cromwell's massacres reduced the population of Ireland to around 40%.

And then Cromwell got really nasty.

Anyone implicated in the rebellion had their land confiscated and was sold into slavery in the West Indies. Even catholic landowners who hadn't taken part of the rebellion had their land confiscated. Catholicism was outlawed and catholic priests were executed when found. To top it off, he ordered the ethnic cleansing of Ireland east of Shannon in 1652. Soldiers were encouraged to kill any Irish who refused to relocate.

Instead of trying to describe the horror, consider the words from the English State Papers in 1742.

"In clearing the ground for the adventurers and soldiers (the English capitalists of that day)... To be transported to Barbados and the English plantations in America. It was a measure beneficial to Ireland, which was thus relieved of a population that might trouble the planters; it was a benefit to the people removed, which might thus be made English and Christians ... a great benefit to the West India sugar planters, who desired men and boys for their bondsmen, and the women and Irish girls... To solace them."
I can't help but notice that the exact same language and logic used to justify enslavement of the blacks was used to justify enslavement of the Irish. It is something for those who think slavery was simply a matter of skin color to consider. As for the Irish slaves, Cromwell specifically targeted Irish children.

“During the 1650s, over 100,000 Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 were taken from their parents and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In this decade, 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and Virginia. Another 30,000 Irish men and women were also transported and sold to the highest bidder. In 1656, [Oliver] Cromwell ordered that 2000 Irish children be taken to Jamaica and sold as slaves to English settlers.”
For some reason, history likes to call these Irish slaves as 'indentured servants'. As if they were somehow considered better than African slaves. This can be considered an attempt at whitewashing the history of the Irish slave trade. There does exist indentured servitude where two parties sign a contract for a limited amount of time. This is not what happened to the Irish from 1625 onward. They were sold as slaves, pure and simple. In reality, they were considered by some to be even lower than the blacks.

“...the African slave trade was just beginning during this same period,” writes Martin. “It is well recorded that African slaves, not tainted with the stain of the hated Catholic theology and more expensive to purchase, were often treated far better than their Irish counterparts.”
African slaves were still relatively new, and were expensive to transport such a long distance (50 sterling in the late 1600's). Irish slaves on the other hand, were relatively cheap in comparison (5 sterling).

If a planter whipped or branded or beat an Irish slave to death, it was never a crime. A death was a monetary setback, but far cheaper than killing a more expensive African. The English masters quickly began breeding the Irish women for both their own personal pleasure and for greater profit. Children of slaves were themselves slaves, which increased the size of the master’s free workforce.
Because Irish slaves were so much cheaper, the loss of investment from torturing and killing them was not considered an effective deterrent. In an ironic twist, this caused some to recommend importing African slaves instead for humanitarian reasons.

Colonel William Brayne wrote to English authorities in 1656 urging the importation of Negro slaves on the grounds that, "as the planters would have to pay much more for them, they would have an interest in preserving their lives, which was wanting in the case of (Irish)...." many of whom, he charged, were killed by overwork and cruel treatment. African Negroes cost generally about 20 to 50 pounds Sterling, compared to 900 pounds of cotton (about 5 pounds Sterling) for an Irish. They were also more durable in the hot climate, and caused fewer problems. The biggest bonus with the Africans though, was they were NOT Catholic, and any heathen pagan was better than an Irish Papist.
"Truly, I have seen cruelty there done to servants as I did not think one Christian could have done to another."

    - Richard Ligon, 1657
It's impossible to estimate the exact number of Irish sold into slavery during this period. More Irish slaves were sold in the American colonies between 1651 and 1660 than the entire free population of those colonies. In fact, more Irish were sold as slaves in the America's during the 17th Century than Africans.

The typical death rate on the slave ships was around 37%.

The Irish did often have one advantage over African slaves - most of the time their time in slavery was limited. They were often sold into slavery from 7 to 20 years, while the only way Africans could get out of slavery was to buy their freedom.

While the number of Irish being sent into slavery dropped off considerably in the 1660's, it did not just end. After the Battle of the Boyne in 1691 there was another load of Irish slaves sent to the new world. Following the failure of the 1798 Irish Rebellion there were tens of thousands more Irish slaves.

Interesting historical note: the last person killed at the Salem Witch Trials was Ann Glover. She and her husband had been shipped to Barbados as a slave in the 1650's. Her husband was killed there for refusing to renounce catholicism.

In the 1680's she was working as a housekeeper in Salem. After some of the children she was caring for got sick she was accused of being a witch. At the trial they demanded she say the Lord's Prayer. She did so, but in Gaelic, because she didn't know English. She was then hung.

    Leave New Orleans Statues Be

My ancestors fought in the War for the Confederacy and lived through Reconstruction in New Orleans.

It was not a good time to be here.

The monuments to the Confederate Dead have a right to stay, just as the monument to Martin Luther King, Jr. on Claiborne Avenue does. If they choose to rename "Jefferson Davis Parkway," then they should also change the name of "Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard."

What offends one person is the rallying cry for another.

My ancestors have been in New Orleans and the State of Louisiana since 1718. They include governors, judges, clerks of court, congressmen, founders of settlements and cities, and founders of universities in our City.

New Orleans has been here for nearly 300 years - why erase our monuments to that history???? Does the mayor honestly believe that a 300 year old city needs to be stripped of her history in order to attract more visitors for her 300th birthday party??? That's preposterous!!!!!!!!!! There was never any talk of this before the recent shooting in the Charleston Church by a deranged lunatic. This is a knee-jerk reaction on the part of the Mayor and it needs to be re-thought.

Where is the funding for the removal of these monuments going to come from -- just to make a point, the people in Lakeview have been waiting nearly 10 years for their streets to be repaired. And only today I have been told that these monuments were built, and continue to be maintained, through federal funding. Do the Mayor or the City Council have the right to tamper with federally funded monuments?

Nevertheless, we cannot allow revisionist historians to erase our City's history! Every American should have the right to appreciate his or her own individual heritage, without those rights being trampled upon or impeded by other groups or individuals who wish to take away that right for their own alternative purposes.

If history is denied, erased and/or re-written, then who is to say that America won't, in the near future, become a nation of book burners, taking a similar path to nations such as Communist Russia, Nazi Germany or China's Cultural Revolution...?
