    French Alps Plane Crash

Germanwings plane crash: Co-pilot 'wanted to destroy plane'

The co-pilot of the Germanwings plane that crashed into the French Alps on Tuesday appeared to want to "destroy the plane", French officials said.

Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin, citing information from the "black box" voice recorder, said the co-pilot was alone in the cockpit.

He intentionally started a descent while the pilot was locked out.

Mr Robin said there was "absolute silence in the cockpit" as the pilot fought to re-enter it.

However, passengers could be heard screaming just before the crash, he added.

The co-pilot, now named as Andreas Lubitz, 28, was alive until the final impact, the prosecutor said.

The Airbus 320 from Barcelona to Duesseldorf hit a mountain, killing all 144 passengers and six crew, after a rapid eight-minute descent.

"We hear the pilot ask the co-pilot to take control of the plane and we hear at the same time the sound of a seat moving backwards and the sound of a door closing," Mr Robin told reporters.

"At that moment, the co-pilot is controlling the plane by himself. While he is alone, the co-pilot presses the buttons of the flight monitoring system to put into action the descent of the aeroplane.

"This action on the altitude controls can only be deliberate."

He added: "The most plausible interpretation is that the co-pilot through a voluntary act had refused to open the cabin door to let the captain in. He pushed the button to trigger the aircraft to lose altitude. He operated this button for a reason we don't know yet, but it appears that the reason was to destroy this plane."

Mr Robin said that air traffic controllers made repeated attempts to contact the aircraft, but to no avail.

He said the co-pilot was "not known by us" to have any links to extremism or terrorism.

But he said German authorities were expected to give further information on his background and private life later.

Meanwhile. relatives and friends of the victims are due to visit the area of the crash.

Other incidents thought to be caused by deliberate pilot action

◾ 29 November 2013: A flight between Mozambique and Angola crashed in Namibia, killing 33 people. Initial investigation results suggested the accident was deliberately carried out by the captain shortly after the first officer (also known as the co-pilot) had left the flight deck.

◾ 31 October 1999: An EgyptAir Boeing 767 went into a rapid descent 30 minutes after taking off from New York, killing 217 people. An investigation suggested that the crash was caused deliberately by the relief first officer but the evidence was not conclusive.

◾ 19 December 1997: More than 100 people were killed when a Boeing 737 travelling from Indonesia to Singapore crashed. The pilot - suffering from "multiple work-related difficulties" - was suspected of switching off the flight recorders and intentionally putting the plane into a dive.

Germanwings Crash: American Mother-Daughter Pair Were on Board
    Mar 25, 2015, 2:26 PM ET
    By MEGHAN KENEALLY
    via Good Morning America

Two of the Americans on board the Germanwings flight that crashed in the French Alps on Tuesday have been identified as a mother and daughter who were traveling together.

The mother has been identified as Yvonne Selke, who worked at the consulting company Booz Allen Hamilton, and the company has confirmed her identity to ABC News.

The second American victim was her daughter Emily Selke, a recent graduate of Drexel University.

"Our entire family is deeply saddened by the losses of Yvonne and Emily Selke," the family said in a statement today. "Two wonderful, caring, amazing people who meant so much to so many. At this difficult time we respectfully ask for privacy and your prayers."

Both Booz Allen Hamilton and Drexel have released statements about the loss to their communities.

"Booz Allen and our employees are mourning the sudden and shocking death of Yvonne Selke, an employee of nearly 23 years, and her daughter, Emily, in the Germanwings airliner crash in the French Alps this week," the company's Executive Vice President Betty Thompson said in a statement.

"Yvonne was a wonderful co-worker and a dedicated employee who spent her career with the firm supporting the mission of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency," Thompson said.

National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Director Robert Cardillo also offered condolences.

"Every death is a tragedy, but seldom does a death affect us all so directly and unexpectedly," Cardillo said in a statement. "All of us offer our deepest condolences and will keep her family and her colleagues in our thoughts."

The Drexel University spokesperson said they were "deeply saddened" by the Selkes' deaths.

"Emily graduated with honors from Drexel in 2013 and was a music industry major in Drexel’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design," the statement read. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends."

Emily Selke was a member of the Gamma Sigma Sigma Zeta sorority, and the national organization put out a statement confirming that she joined in 2011.

The Selkes were two of the 150 people who died in the Tuesday morning crash.

There was a third American, yet to be identified, on board, according to the U.S. State Department. http://abcnews.go.com/topics/news/us...department.htm

A German high school has posted the names of their 16 students and two colleagues who were all on board the flight and died in the crash as they were returning from a Spanish-language exchange program.

    Germanwings Co-Pilot Was Muslim Convert
March 27, 2015 By Colleen Conley

Emerging evidence indicates that the 28 year old copilot who crashed a Germanwings flight this week had converted to Islam, and had stayed at the same mosque which radicalized Mohammed Atta from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Police have reportedly found an “item of significance” at the apartment of Andreas Lubitz, the First Officer who crashed the Germanwing passenger plane into the Alps. The item was NOT a suicide note.

In the six-month break during his training as a pilot at Germanwings, Lubitz reportedly converted to Islam and subsequently decided to carry out the mass murder. It is not known whether he did so by order of extremist Muslims or on his own accord. As the convert stayed often at a radical mosque in Bremen, which is at the center of the investigation, he may have received his instructions directly from members of the immediate Muslim community.

Converts are considered to be a most important weapon of Islam, as their backgrounds do not suggest that they are violent.

Pamela Geller, a prominent American anti-jihadist, captured images and comments from Lubitz’s Facebook page, which has since been taken down.

Another Facebook page has also been set up, entitled “Support for Andrew Lubitz, hero of the Islamic State.”

Undoubtedly, the left will categorize this murderous act as an episode of “workplace violence” or as a result of the actions of a “mentally unstable” individual.
