Thread: No Respect

We were at a park in New Orleans in the fall and there was a large art sculpture of a house in a tree memorializing the destruction caused by Katrina. A passer-by walked up and told my daughter & niece that they could climb up the piece and take pictures, he had and posted them on FB. As I walked up, he amended his comments, but still encouraged the kids to climb on it. I kinda shooed the guy away. He walked a few yards then sat on a bench. When he thought I wasn't looking, he continued to signal the kids to climb up ... when my husband started to walk in his direction, he finally left the area. He gave us all a rather "creepy" vibe. I stated and restated to the kids - that you NEVER climb on the "Art Installations" be they statues or whatnot.... they are not playgrounds.

That being said ... I found this story especially disturbing.

Matthew Munson

A photographer named Matthew Munson took several photos during a recent visit to Washington, D.C., and one in particular is stirring up conversation about American history, parenting, and respect.

Munson shared his photos to Facebook, and there's some standard DC fare—that obelisk called the Washington Monument, some military memorials. http://insider.foxnews.com/2015/03/2...omens-memorial

But one of Munson's memorial photos speaks volumes without making a sound.

It's an image of the Vietnam Women's Memorial, which serves to honor the women who served during the U.S. war with Vietnam, from 1955 to 1975. Atop this statue is a young girl using it like playground equipment. On the ground, another young girl appears to be climbing up. All this as a military veteran in a wheelchair, presumably escorted by family members, goes by.

The man pushing the veteran's wheelchair has a look of palpable disgust. The veteran himself has an unplaceable, one-of-a-kind look that hardly suggests pleasant thoughts. And Munson's Internet audience, chiming in with their comments on this particular photo, are similarly disappointed.


"Obviously, these kids have no veterans in their family, and their parents have absolutely NO IDEA what it means to sacrifice ALL for your country! Despicable on the parent's behalf."

"Holy hell! Maybe afterwards the parents could take their kids on a nice tomato throwing spree at a cathedral. Please understand, I'm not blaming the kids."

"There is no respect taught to children anymore? That is the shame on the parents."

Looks like Munson has captured the sort of singular, indelible image that any photographer would envy.

Totally appropriate in today's society. Breeders are clueless on how to raise/teach a child, or even have respect for anything.

They have signs that tell you not to get in it, but naturally people don't listen. They've even posted guards now to keep people out, but that's not working either. My dad got so furious at 2 kids splashing in the water, with their parents next to them not doing anything, that he went up and YELLED at the kids!! LOL

If I ever win the lottery, I'll donate enough money to have (attractive) fencing put around all those memorials, to keep people off.

People these days just lack total respect for anything!!

Pay for them to install sharp rocks all along the bottom of the fountain.

Thoughts about this in the light of recent events ?

Harambe died today, one day after his 17th birthday. Son of Moja, he was born and raised at the Gladys Porter Zoo here in South Texas-- a magnificent western lowland gorilla. Everyone loved him here. Last year, the big guy was sent to Cincinnati Zoo to meet some girls. This afternoon, Harambe was shot dead when a small child crossed a railing, got through a fence, past thick Pyrecantha bushes and a 12" thick concrete wall-- and fell into the gorilla moat. Where were the parents of the child? Looking at their cell phones? I see kids running wild all the time at the Gladys Porter Zoo, at every zoo I visit. Chasing peacocks, yelling at the animals, feeding animals, throwing stuff into exhibits, often totally unsupervised and undisciplined. Adults do the same crap. Ignorant and self-entitled to do what they please, here in this very special place that many endangered species call home, they couldn't care less about the consequences of their behavior. Now Harambe is dead. Great work people! Animals lose again.

I read that a witness saw the little boy tell his mom he was going to go in to play with the gorilla. The mom told her son no you can't. I wonder what happened after that. At that time, I would of taken my son's hand and went to another exhibit. I surly wouldn't of stayed where my child wanted to go play with an animal.

Memorial Day Outrage: [I]Criminal Relic Hunters Deface Civil War Battlefield Park

On the eve of Memorial Day, Civil War historians and battlefield preservationists were alarmed to discover someone had illegally dug numerous holes on the grounds of the Petersburg National Civil War Battlefield Park. The criminals were apparently hunting for relics buried long ago during some of America’s most trying days.

Relic hunting on federal battlefield property is a crime but that apparently didn’t deter whoever defaced this hallowed ground and neither, apparently, did the fact that the nation is only days away from pausing to remember the sacrifice of all America’s fallen soldiers, most especially those of the Civil War – the very soldiers the holiday was created to memorialize.

Petersburg National Battlefield Superintendent Lewis Rogers told ABC news, “This is an affront to the memory of people who fought and died on this field and it is destruction and theft of history from the American people.”

“This kind of aberrant behavior is always disgusting but it is particularly egregious as Memorial Day weekend arrives, a time when we honor the memories of our friends and family,” he added.

The park chief informed the media why leaving the relics undisturbed is so important.

“Archeological resources are a window to our nation’s history,” Rogers explained. “Historians are still writing history based on the archeological clues left by those who have preceded us. Removing these artifacts erase any chance for us to learn from our nation’s greatest tragedy.” Rogers added that looters take from the battlefield using a metal detector, digging into the earth and taking whatever artifacts they find.

From the evidence at hand it is impossible to determine if the relic hunters pulled anything from the grounds, but somewhere down the line, it is likely when the thieves try to sell the items the closely knit relic collecting community may be able to help authorities track down those responsible.

Civil war artifacts are highly prized collectibles and things from identified battlefields carry a premium price tag, especially when the battlefield in question is as important and famous as Petersburg.

But defacing a national battlefield park and stealing relics from their grounds is highly illegal and brings thousands of dollars in fines and even jail time. In some cases, those found with illegal relics could also have their own collections confiscated by the federal government, even if much of the collection was not all illegally obtained.

Petersburg is a seminal Civil War battle. It is the locale of the longest siege battle in U.S. history as Lincoln’s general Ulysses Grant encircled and probed the weaker defenses of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in the Summer of 1864. Lee was desperate to prevent Grant’s forces from capturing Richmond, Virginia, the nascent Confederacy’s capital city.

After nine months of grueling warfare, pitched battles, harassment via sharpshooters, and a successful campaign of starving the Confederate forces of food and supplies, Grant’s men finally drove Lee out of Petersburg by March of 1865. It was only a month later that General Lee surrendered his forces to Grant’s victorious army starting the clock on the last days of the war.

The thievery is especially galling since it occurred only days before Memorial Day. The holiday was initiated by Illinois General John Logan who in 1868 ordered a special day for the “strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion.”

It was originally called Decoration Day, but the practice has come down from 1868 to us today as Memorial Day, a day when we take time out of our busy lives to remember all who fell and gave their last full measure of devotion in service to our nation.

I have a child who was fast on his feet... and liked to "explore" which is why I had him on a tether in public places. A parent is responible for their toddler. What if he had gotten into a busy road ? Slipped away and got on a subway track ? The child is lucky the fall alone didn't kill him.

I would be interested in seeing if they are going to pull her cell phone activity.

My family and I decided to go to the zoo yesterday after visiting my neice at Cincinnati Childrens hospital. For those of you that have already heard, there was a terrible accident there yesterday. And since every news media has covered this story, I don't feel bad telling our side. This was an accident! ! A terrible accident, but just that! My husband's voice is the voice talking to the child in one of the videos. I was taking a pic of the female gorilla, when my eldest son yells, "what is he doing? " I looked down, and to my surprise, there was a small child that had apparently, literally "flopped" over the railing, where there was then about 3 feet of ground that the child quickly crawled through! ! I assumed the woman next to me was the mother, getting ready to grab him until she says, "Whose kid is this? " None of us actually thought he'd go over the nearly 15 foot drop, but he was crawling so fast through the bushes before myself or husband could grab him, he went over! The crowed got a little frantic and the mother was calling for her son. Actually, just prior to him going over, but she couldn't see him crawling through the bushes! She said "He was right here! I took a pic and his hand was in my back pocket and then gone!" As she could find him nowhere, she lookes to my husband (already over the railing talking to the child) and asks, "Sir, is he wearing green shorts? " My husband reluctantly had to tell her yes, when she then nearly had a break down! They are both wanting to go over into the 15 foot drop, when I forbade my husband to do so, and attempted to calm the mother by calling 911 and assure her help was on the way. Neither my husband or the mother would have made that jump without breaking something! I wasn't leaving with my boys, because I didn't trust my husband not to jump in and the gorilla did just seem to be protective of the child. It wasn't until the gorilla became agitated because of the nosey, dramatic, helpless crowd; that the gorilla violently ran with the child! And it was very violent; although I think the gorilla was still trying to protect, we're taking a 400 lb gorilla throwing a 40 lb toddler around! It was horrific! The zoo responded very quickly, clearing the area and attempting to save both the child and the gorilla! The right choice was made. Thank God the child survived with non-life threatening, but serious injuries! This was an open exhibit! Which means the only thing separating you from the gorillas, is a 15 ish foot drop and a moat and some bushes! ! The zoo did an awesome job handling the situation! Especially since that had never happened before! ! Thankful for the zoo and their attempts and my thoughts and prayers goes out to this boy, his mother and his family.

The gorilla seemed to be protecting the child at first ... and the crowd may have seemed threatening to him. The tranks would have taken too long to take effect and the child may have been further injured in the process.

A National Disgrace: Fury as vandals and looters desecrate veterans graveyards and historic battlefields across three states on Memorial Day weekend

Memorials to veterans in a Los Angeles neighborhood and a town in Kentucky, as well as a Civil War veterans cemetery in Virginia, were damaged as the nation prepares to mark Memorial Day, officials said.

A Vietnam War memorial in the Venice area of Los Angeles has been extensively defaced by graffiti.

The vandalism occurred sometime during the past week, KCAL/KCBS-TV reported.

The homespun memorial painted on a block-long wall on Pacific Avenue lists the names of American service members missing in action or otherwise unaccounted for in Southeast Asia.

The memorial was painted by a Vietnam veteran and dedicated in 1992. The wall has been tagged previously but the latest vandalism - within the past week - covers the bottom half of the memorial for much of its length

News of the vandalism came as another veterans-related memorial was reported damaged in Henderson, Kentucky.

Police say a Memorial Day cross display there that honors the names of 5,000 veterans of conflicts dating back to the Revolutionary War has been damaged by a driver who plowed through the crosses early Saturday.

Anthony Burrus, 27, was arrested in connection with the incident that took place early on Saturday morning.. Roughly 160 crosses were knocked down and about 20 were destroyed.

The vehicle Burrus was driving, a 1979 Ford Thunderbird, was found with pieces of a cross and ground stake embedded in the tires.

A large number of tips, Facebook posts, and vehicle searches helped officers make the connection and arrest Burrus.

Police said earlier on Saturday that the damage appeared to be deliberate because the driver had to jump the curb to get to the display.

'For somebody to do this to a veteran who gave his life, I don't understand. I don't have any words. I'm speechless,' Jim Hanley, a member of the Legion, said to The Gleaner.

Family members arrived to see if any of the crosses that bear the names of their relatives were damaged. Some arrived and were relieved to find certain crosses unharmed, while others were brought to tears by the damage.

Jennifer Richmond, a spokesman for the Henderson Police Department, said the community is devastated and working frantically to repair and replace the crosses that were put on display for a Memorial Day ceremony in Central Park.

Meanwhile, in Virginia, the Petersburg National Battlefield has apparently has been looted, the National Park Service said. Numerous excavations were found at the Civil War battlefield last week,

Jeffrey Olson, and agency spokesman, said in a news release Friday. Petersburg National Battlefield is a 2,700-acre park marks where more than 1,000 Union and Confederate soldiers died fighting during the Siege of Petersburg 151 years ago.

Looters ripped up parts of the battlefield in an apparent search for relics from a siege that led to the end of the American Civil War in 1865,

Thieves dug a series of small pits looking for artifacts from the Union Army's nine-month blockade of Richmond and the neighboring city of Petersburg, targeting a field where more than 1,000 Union and Confederate soldiers died.

The looters were likely to have found uniform buttons, buckles, bullets and other small metal objects that are difficult to trace, Chris Bryce, chief of interpretation and visitor services at the battlefield, said on Saturday.
