LiveLeak bans future ISIS beheading videos

    NEW YORK (CNNMoney)

When YouTube started to remove gory videos of journalist James Foley's beheading this week, the next stop for some Internet surfers was LiveLeak, a streaming video website that specializes in hosting graphic videos that other sites won't touch.

There was so much interest in the Foley video Wednesday that LiveLeak warned visitors about possible slowdowns due to "an abnormally high volume of traffic."

But Thursday, the site's operators announced an out-of-character decision: "We will not be showing further beheadings carried out by" ISIS.

"We've shown the world the true horror of this form of execution more than once in the past and we cannot find any compelling reason to even be thought of as promoting the actions of this group," LiveLeak said in a statement.

"There is no reason at all to show more beheadings," they added.

Some of LiveLeak's users may strongly disagree, and the website acknowledged as much in its statement. They said they'd hold a live discussion with users later on Thursday.

The fact of the matter is that many millions of Internet users seek out sites like LiveLeak to see the very kind of gruesome content that traditional media refrain from showing viewers.

But "our belief in your rights to view whatever you wish do not override our rights to not host it here," LiveLeak said.

In other words, even LiveLeak wants to draw a line somewhere -- mirroring decisions by YouTube, Twitter (TWTR, Tech30) and Facebook (FB, Tech30) about what sorts of objectionable material may be shared by users.

The (unnamed) LiveLeak operators said they'd had several meetings about the Foley beheading video. The site has provided access to other such videos in the past.

But "there is every chance - given the rumours of hostage stockpiling currently doing the rounds - that we could see a return to the dark times of 2004/5 when beheadings happened with an alarming and depressing regularity," the statement said. "It's this which prompted us" to effectively ban future ISIS videos.

The site added that "this does not mean we won't continue to show graphic media should we deem it reasonable to do so, we will continue despite the regular condemnation, in other words for the most part nothing is going to change... We simply will not host further beheadings" from ISIS.

Statement From Liveleak Regarding IS Beheading Videos which might be upcoming

Please read BEFORE commenting and keep in mind we have NOT removed the James Foley video. This is not about that video.

The last 24 hours have been a fairly intense affair here on LiveLeak given the sheer volume of traffic we've dealt with from people looking for the James Foley beheading video. This has also raised some issues and concerns which we have had several meetings about regarding the entire situation.

The actual video concerned does not show the beheading of James Foley although it does show a graphic image of the aftermath. We chose to show it because it's within our remit to show such items given this is an outrageous and horrific act carried out by a movement in the Middle East hellbent on conquest, death and destruction. Setting aside how IS came to be, setting aside who fund them, setting aside the fact the world only seems to care now that they are killing "our" people as opposed to simply slaughtering other Arabs who might not be the 'right kind of Muslim'. We thought it was important to show this video and allow those who chose to view it the right to do so.

From there we discussed the possibilities which lie ahead. There is every chance - given the rumours of hostage stockpiling currently doing the rounds - that we could see a return to the dark times of 2004/5 when beheadings happened with an alarming and depressing regularity. It's this which prompted us to make a decision, a decision some of you might not care for but hopefully you'll at least understand.

We will not be showing further beheadings carried out by IS. We've shown the world the true horror of this form of execution more than once in the past and we cannot find any compelling reason to even be thought of as promoting the actions of this group. We know they do not find support here on LL and that condemnation is virtually universal but there is no reason at all to show more beheadings. Nothing changes about them, they're still relentlessly grim and no deeper insight will be offered by descending into some grotesque "beheading of the week" scenario.

This does not mean we won't continue to show graphic media should we deem it reasonable to do so, we will continue despite the regular condemnation, in other words for the most part nothing is going to change. We will not be making publicity driven moves to ban people for trying to upload the media or posting screenshots to discuss it. We simply will not host further beheadings from IS. Some of you will not be happy about this and we are still fully supportive of your right to view this media should you wish and many outlets will be only too happy to have you do so at their site. But our belief in your rights to view whatever you wish do not override our rights to not host it here on LL.

A Week Before His Murder, James Foley’s Family Received a Chilling Warning From ISIS
By Justen Charters 10 hours ago

After the gruesome murder of their son, James Foley, his family revealed that they had received a chilling email from ISIS a week before. From a Sky News video report:

Philip Balboni, President of the Global Post news website, said: “On Wednesday night last week the Foley family received an email from the kidnappers that was full of rage against the United States bombing and they stated that they would execute Jim. “Obviously, we hoped and prayed that that would not be the case. We communicated as quickly as we could, with the captors; pleaded with them for mercy.”

When Foley’s parents learned of the tragic news of their son’s murder, they spoke to the media outside of their home and honored their son’s life. “We’re very proud of Jim,” the Foleys said. “He was a courageous, fearless journalist. A very compassionate American.”

“We thank Jim for all the joy he gave us. He was an extraordinary son, brother, journalist and person,” Diane Foley said.

“He met the most horrific end and it haunts me how much pain he must have been in and how cruel this method of execution is as opposed to so many others,” the grieving father continued.

John Foley believes that James was the kind of man who would volunteer to be executed first for others’ sake. “He was courageous to the end and he accepted his situation and he gathered his faith.”

A military veteran has penned a brutally scathing message to the Islamic State militants in the Middle East who are slaughtering innocent men, women, and children. http://warfighterfoundation.wordpres...ssage-to-isis/

The powerful response from Nick Powers, identified as a Marine Corps veteran by one website, comes after terrorists beheaded American photojournalist James Foley and posted the propaganda video online for the world to see. http://americanlivewire.com/2014-08-...q-war-veteran/

The main, undeniable point of his message to ISIS terrorists is this: You really don’t want to pick a fight with America’s veterans.

It’s best to read his message in its entirety (Paragraph breaks added):

“As I sit here constantly hearing and watching you execute innocent men, women and children in the Middle East I chuckle. Why do I chuckle you may ask? Well let me explain something to you cowardice fools who think you are so tough behind all your propaganda videos. You are scaring a population that doesn’t know how to fight, you’re bullying the weak.

You say Islam is the religion of peace, but since when does terrorizing the innocent and beheading men, women and children constitute peace? WTF? But keep in mind, what did Saddam’s troops do when we came rolling into town? They surrendered, twice… So all your empty threats of coming to America and raising your flag over the White House amuse me more than any of you sick, sadistic bastards could ever imagine or comprehend.

In 2012 there was about 21.2 million veterans in the United States. Do you understand what that means? Let me break it down for you. That means there are literally millions of disgruntled, dysfunctional, pissed off veterans who have been dealing with years of abuse from their government stabbing them in the backs and having to watch their friends die because you Islamic extremist idiots can’t seem to act like normal human beings and stop terrorism and the violence.

It’s one thing to take over an Islamic state, but if my memory serves me correctly, I’m pretty sure we plowed through Fallujah in 4 days. Better yet, it took us about month to control your entire country. At this point, with 13+ years of war under our belts, how long do you think it would take us to do it all over again? I’ll let you draw your own conclusions on that one. Do you really think you stand a chance on US soil? Do you really think it would be smart to poke that bear? Remember, never bite the hand that feeds you.

Remember we are armed to the teeth in the US and I can promise you this… the Geneva Conventions will not apply to you. You attack us and there will be no mercy. We will bring the righteous hand of God down upon you and crush you. The ball is in your court now ISIS. We are more than ready to arrange your so called “meeting” with your 72 virgins and send you to your “prophet” Mohamed.”

ABC Reports Obama Team Knew In Advance of ISIS Plans to Kill U.S. Journalist
    By Cheri Jacobus | August 20, 2014

In a stunning report by ABC News online, we learned that President Barack Obama and his White House knew that ISIS "recently threatened to kill U.S. journalist James Foley to avenge airstrikes the United States has conducted in Iraq." A video surfaced on Tuesday showing what appears to be an ISIS terrorist beheading Foley with the stated reason of revenge on Obama, suggesting they will do it again. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics...us-journalist/

President Obama recently downplayed the ability of ISIS to carry out significant damaging acts of violence, referring to the terrorists as the JV (Junior Varsity) team compared to Al Qaeda, in an interview with The New Yorker magazine's David Remnick. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014...nce-theyre-jv/

Much like the Obama Administration knew of the possibility and even the likelihood of the September 2012 attack in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, the advance information seemed to find the president flat-footed. After the attack, the Obama Administration erroneously claimed a YouTube video prompted the attack. However, while the left-wing media largely has protected the Obama White House from being fingered as deadly incompetent regarding Benghazi, will they change their tune now that one of their fellow journalists appears to have suffered a similar fate despite the president knowing of the coming danger?

ABCNews.com reported "President Obama was briefed on the video aboard Air Force One Tuesday night as he returned to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, from Washington to resume his August vacation." The militants say they plan to also murder another missing (and presumed captured and kidnapped) American journalist, Steven Sotloff.
    http://www.mrctv.org/videos/parents-...ment-his-death

The White House has not articulated a plan to address the murder or prevent the murder of Sotloff. In June, President Obama released five terrorists for the return of one U.S. soldier, Bowe Bergdahl, despite ample evidence he was a traitor and deserter.

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) there are 39 missing journalists currently missing, with 20 of them having gone missing in Syria alone, with dozens more killed http://www.cpj.org/mideast/syria/

Frightening words of warning from the Chaldean archbishop who fled Mosul.

    We'd best take heed:

Today we sat in our church, Community Christian, as Pastor Scott finished the 31 week Bible journey known as “The Story.” We ended up in the Book of Revelation and the interesting thing tPastor brought to our attention was that this book was written while there was intense persecution of the Christian church.

Frankly, it was the intent of the Romans to destroy Christianity by the most evil and demonic manner — beheading, sawing in half, burning at the stake, fed to lions. As a matter of fact, the writer of the Book of Revelation, John, was the last surviving Apostle of Jesus Christ. He had somehow survived his death sentence and was summarily exiled to the Island of Patmos. John’s message was there was a greater reward awaiting Christians and they should not lose hope in the time of persecution.

There could not have been a better sermon to be delivered in these times as we have been inundated with terrifying pictures of James Wright Foley’s beheading which can only be categorized as savage, barbaric and evil.

Now, Pastor Scott is a passionate and astute shepherd of our flock, but there are times when we should listen to those on the front lines, who have faced this modern day persecution of Christians and have lost homes and lives.

Amel Nona is the 47-year-old Chaldean archbishop of Mosul who fled to Erbil (in Kurdish Regional Government territory) and made the following statements to Corriere Della Serra, published August 10, 2014: http://www.andrewbostom.org/blog/201...-islamization/

“Our sufferings today are a prelude to what even European and Western Christians will incur in the near future. Your liberal and democratic principles here [in the Middle East] are not worth anything. You need to rethink our reality in the Middle East because you are receiving in your countries, an increasing number of Muslims. You too are at risk. You have to take strong and courageous decisions, at the cost of contradicting your principles. You think that men are all the same. It is not true. Islam does not say that all men are equal. Your values are not their values. If you do not understand in time, you will become victims of the enemy that you welcomed into your home.”
If we continue to dismiss the reality of the enemy just because it makes us uncomfortable — due to our own self-inflicted wounds of political correctness — we shall indeed go the way of the Byzantines and Constantinople.

However, I say — and Pastor Scott, I hope you’re not reading this — “SCREW THAT!” I do believe in the words of Paul in Phillipians 1:21(NIV) “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

But right now I ain’t in the mood for turning the other cheek nor dying. It is time we met this historical enemy of freedom and liberty head on and crushed them.

As Pastor Scott said so eloquently in his sermon at the beginning, “God’s team wins (the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, and Jesus), Pick a side, and don’t be stupid.” Good guidance Pastor Scott, and I am all in on the winning team. Check yourself, are you?

    Molon Labe!

British Ex-Rapper ID'd as Jihadist Who Beheaded Foley
    Sunday, 24 Aug 2014 07:51 AM
    By Todd Beamon

A 23-year-old British former rapper was identified on Saturday by British security officials as the man suspected of beheading American journalist James Foley, according to news reports.

Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, who is said to be known by Islamic State members as "Jihadi John" because of his British accent, was identified by unnamed British intelligence sources as the masked terrorist standing by Foley in a video ISIS posted on the Internet of the execution, The Sunday Times of London reports.

Prior to release of the Foley death video, Bary had posted a photo of himself on Twitter holding a severed head. He was identified by the British Security Service and the Secret Intelligence Service, the Times reports, citing sources it did not identify.

Bary, whose music has been played on BBC radio, left his family's home in West London last year to go to Syria, The Telegraph reports. He had a similar build and skin tone as the jihadist in the video, British authorities said. For ISIS, Bary is fighting under the name Abu Kalashnikov, the London Evening Standard reports. The sources provided no other information to the news organizations.

According to the Evening Standard, Bary is the son of high-profile al-Qaida terror suspect Adel Abdul Bary, the Egyptian militant who was extradited to the United States in 2012 over allegations that he masterminded the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in East Africa. Foley, 40, of Rochester, N.H., was kidnapped on Nov. 22, 2012, in northern Syria. He had earlier been kidnapped and released in Libya.

The British intelligence agencies and police estimate that up to 20 extremists from the U.K. are now traveling to Syria and Iraq to fight with ISIS every month, the Times reports. The rate has risen since ISIS declared a "caliphate" in the lands it has seized in Iraq and Syria eight weeks ago, according to the Times.

Britain's Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Sunday that the killing of Foley by a man speaking with an English accent was an "utter betrayal of our country".

"It is horrifying to think that the perpetrator of this heinous act could have been brought up in Britain," Hammond wrote in an article published in the Sunday Times. "It is an utter betrayal of our country, our values and everything the British people stand for."

Hammond also warned that IS was "turning a swathe of Iraq and Syria into a terrorist state as a base for launching attacks on the West."

He added: "Unless they are stopped, sooner or later they will seek to strike us on British soil."

Britain has ruled out sending ground troops into Iraq to fight the jihadists but it is taking steps including sending equipment to Kurdish peshmerga fighters to help combat them, as well as offering humanitarian assistance.

The government is under pressure at home to step up action to prevent the radicalization of young Muslims in Britain, some of whom then travel abroad to fight.

More than 500 Britons have traveled to Syria or Iraq to fight with jihadists in the last few years, according to the intelligence services.

Home Secretary Theresa May indicated Saturday that she could invoke fresh powers to combat radicalization, including banning orders for militant groups. But the main opposition Labour Party has accused the government of not moving quickly enough or providing enough specifics on what it intends to do.

A LETTER FROM JIM: All letters Jim wrote to his family during his captivity were confiscated by the jailers. So, Jim devised a better approach this last June: he asked a fellow hostage about to be released to commit a letter to memory. Very soon after his release, this hostage called Diane and dictated what follows.

    "Dear Family and Friends,

I remember going to the Mall with Dad, a very long bike ride with Mom. I remember so many great family times that take me away from this prison. Dreams of family and friends take me away and happiness fills my heart.

I know you are thinking of me and praying for me. And I am so thankful. I feel you all especially when I pray. I pray for you to stay strong and to believe. I really feel I can touch you even in this darkness when I pray.

Eighteen of us have been held together in one cell, which has helped me. We have had each other to have endless long conversations about movies, trivia, sports. We have played games made up of scraps found in our cell…we have found ways to play checkers, Chess, and Risk… and have had tournaments of competition, spending some days preparing strategies for the next day’s game or lecture. The games and teaching each other have helped the time pass. They have been a huge help. We repeat stories and laugh to break the tension.

I have had weak and strong days. We are so grateful when anyone is freed; but of course, yearn for our own freedom. We try to encourage each other and share strength. We are being fed better now and daily. We have tea, occasional coffee. I have regained most of my weight lost last year.

I think a lot about my brothers and sister. I remember playing Werewolf in the dark with Michael and so many other adventures. I think of chasing Mattie and T around the kitchen counter. It makes me happy to think of them. If there is any money left in my bank account, I want it to go to Michael and Matthew. I am so proud of you, Michael and thankful to you for happy childhood memories and to you and Kristie for happy adult ones.

And big John, how I enjoyed visiting you and Cress in Germany. Thank you for welcoming me. I think a lot about RoRo and try to imagine what Jack is like. I hope he has RoRo’s personality!

And Mark… so proud of you too Bro. I think of you on the West coast and hope you are doing some snowboarding and camping, I especially remember us going to the Comedy Club in Boston together and our big hug after. The special moments keep me hopeful.

Katie, so very proud of you. You are the strongest and best of us all!! I think of you working so hard, helping people as a nurse. I am so glad we texted just before I was captured. I pray I can come to your wedding…. now I am sounding like Grammy!!

Grammy, please take your medicine, take walks and keep dancing. I plan to take you out to Margarita’s when I get home. Stay strong because I am going to need your help to reclaim my life.

    Jim"

American woman is being held hostage in Syria
19 hr ago | By LARA JAKES of Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Islamic State militant group is holding hostage a young American woman who was doing humanitarian aid work hostage in Syria, a family representative said Tuesday. The 26-year-old woman is the third American known to have been kidnapped by the militant group.

The Islamic State group recently threatened to kill American hostages to avenge the crushing airstrikes in Iraq against militants advancing on Mount Sinjar and the Kurdish capital of Irbil.

The 26-year-old woman was captured last year while working with three humanitarian groups in Syria. A representative for the family and U.S. officials asked that the woman not be identified out of fear for her safety. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the issue publicly.

More than a week ago, freelance journalist James Foley was beheaded by the Islamic State group, which kidnapped him in November 2012. Foley, 40, has worked in a number of conflict zones across the Mideast, including Iraq, Libya and Syria. He was in northern Syria on assignment for Agence France-Press and the Boston-based media company GlobalPost when the car he was riding in was stopped by four militants in a contested battle zone that both Sunni rebel fighters and government forces were trying to control.

The Islamic State video of Foley's beheading also showed another of the missing American journalists, Steven Sotloff, and warned he would be killed next if U.S. airstrikes continued. U.S. officials believe the video was made days before its release and have grown increasingly worried about Sotloff's fate.

Other American hostages have been held by other militant groups, including Peter Curtis who was recently released by al-Nusra Front, a rival Sunni extremist group. Another U.S. freelance journalist, Austin Tice disappeared in Syria in August 2012 and is believed to be held by the same organization. Tice was working for The Washington Post, McClatchy Newspapers and other media outlets when he was kidnapped.

The Islamic State militant group is seeking to create a caliphate across parts of Syria and Iraq. The militant group is so ruthless in its attacks against all people they consider heretics or infidels that it has been disowned by al-Qaida's leaders.

President Barack Obama said in a speech in North Carolina on Tuesday that "America does not forget" and vowed justice for Foley's murder.

In its annual report last November, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists estimated at least 30 journalists have been kidnapped or have disappeared in Syria — held and threatened with death by extremists or taken captive by gangs seeking ransom. CPJ described the widespread seizure of journalists as unprecedented, and largely unreported by news organizations in the hope that keeping the kidnappings out of public view may help to negotiate the captives' release.

The group reported 52 journalists have been killed since Syria's civil war began in early 2011, and documented at least 24 other journalists who disappeared earlier this year but are now safe.

Separately, the Paris-based Reporters Without Borders last fall cited higher figures, saying at least 60 "news providers" are being detained and more than 110 have been killed.

26-Year-Old Female Relief Worker Named Next to Be Executed if U.S. Does Not Fulfill ISIS’ Demands
By Jennifer Van Laar 21 hours ago

This morning it was revealed that a third American citizen held hostage by ISIS is a 26-year-old woman from the West Coast who was performing humanitarian relief work when she was kidnapped in Syria last year. http://foxnewsinsider.com/2014/08/26...d-hostage-isis The family requested that the name not be released to the public.

    ABC News reports: http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/isis-d...ry?id=25127682

The terror group is demanding $6.6 million and the release of U.S. prisoners for the life of the young woman, who the family requested not be identified.

In addition to the multi-million dollar ransom, the terror group has also demanded that the U.S. release Aafia Siddiqui, an MIT-trained neuroscientist who was convicted by the U.S. in 2010 of trying to kill U.S. officials two years before, according to a supporter of Siddiqui who has been in contact with the hostage’s family.
Why the increase in demands for the release of U.S. hostages? Through the Bergdahl trade, the President has already shown that he will release terrorists we hold in exchange for American citizens.

This young woman has probably been through hell during her captivity, and one would expect that the Obama administration is using all of the resources at its disposal to locate and rescue her and our other hostages. Hopefully last week’s disclosures of the failed Foley rescue mission will not have jeopardized a mission to rescue her. http://www.ijreview.com/2014/08/1705...escue-mission/

GOP Intel Chair Claims White House Leaked Details Of Foley Rescue Mission

Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Mike Rogers (R-MI) leveled heavy criticism on the Obama administration for revealing details of the mission to rescue American hostage James Foley from his ISIS captors. Rogers appeared on WMAL radio in Washington, D.C., and said that the secrecy surrounding the mission was an enormous asset that the White House just squandered.

“Literally the day before the White House released this, I happened to be in conversation with individuals who do that kind of work and they were ecstatic that the bad guys hadn’t figured out who had done it yet. They were continuing to mis-attribute who or what, or what happened to them. That was a huge success because it protects operational security, if they were ever going to do another one of these raids.

I can only imagine what they’re feeling right now, but they can’t be very happy.”
Rogers went on to suggest that it appeared the Obama administration released these details for public relations purposes.

“The timing of it is suspect,” Rogers said. “It came right on the heels of ‘well, the President’s golfing or not doing anything.’ They leaked this particular story on ‘see, aren’t we tough? we went and did this particular raid,’ if you will.”

Rogers said that releasing this information now will make it more difficult to execute a similar type of raid to rescue Americans held captive in the future.

Rep. Rogers also discussed the recent accusations that one of the reasons the mission failed was that the President took too long to give the green light to the military.

“It has been very difficult to get a decision to move out smartly on a lot of these types of very difficult things,” Rogers said. “And time is of the essence. The timing of the order matters in these cases.”

When I pressed Rogers on this issue, he said he did not want to discuss the specific details of this mission, but he did reiterate that “It has been difficult for the administration, in the past, to be decisive when they get this information and have a timely decision.”

He then pointed to the much-heralded raid on the Osama bin Laden compound in Pakistan. “I watched that unfold from the inside, scratching my head for days. That one turned out great, but (bin Laden) had less mobility. “
