President Obama is speaking about an Iran nuclear deal.

Iran nuclear deal limits ability to create nuclear weapons

Geneva, Switzerland (CNN) -- A historic deal was struck early Sunday between Iran and six world powers over Tehran's nuclear program that slows the country's nuclear development program in exchange for lifting some sanctions while a more formal agreement is worked out.

The agreement -- described as an "initial, six-month" deal -- includes "substantial limitations that will help prevent Iran from creating a nuclear weapon," U.S. President Barack Obama said in a nationally televised address.

The deal, which capped days of marathon talks, addresses Iran's ability to enrich uranium, what to do about its existing enriched uranium stockpiles, the number and potential of its centrifuges and Tehran's "ability to produce weapons-grade plutonium using the Arak reactor," according to a statement released by the White House.

Iran also agreed to provide "increased transparency and intrusive monitoring of its nuclear program," it said.

There was no immediate reaction from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has consistently asked the West to be wary of any deals with Iran.

However, Israeli Intelligence Minister Yubal Steinitz reiterated the Israeli government stance when he said Sunday morning that the last-second amendments put into the agreement are "far from satisfactory."

"This agreement is still bad and will make it more difficult than before to achieve an appropriate solution in the future," he said.

Iran and the P5+1, the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany, reached a deal on Sunday, November 24, to dial back Iran's ability to work toward a nuclear weapon. Click through for an overview of how enriched uranium is made.

Uranium, a partially radioactive metal found throughout the Earth's crust, is excavated from underground or open-cast mines. The uranium is then extracted from the mined ore using a leaching agent at a chemical plant.

Once extracted, the solid uranium oxide concentrate -- known as yellowcake -- needs to be converted to a toxic gas, known as Uranium Hexafluoride (UF6), before the next stage in the fuel-making process.

The concentration of the fissionable isotope in uranium, U-235, has to be increased to 3.5 percent for it to be useable in a nuclear reactor. Enrichment occurs when the UF6 gas is fed into centrifuges and spun at high speeds until the required level of U-235 is achieved. A nuclear bomb requires 90 percent enriched uranium.

The enriched UF6 gas is transported to a fuel fabrication plant where it is converted to uranium dioxide (UO2) powder and pressed into small "pellets." These pellets are inserted into thin tubes to form fuel rods, which are sealed and assembled in clusters to form fuel assemblies for use in the core of a nuclear reactor.

Once inside a reactor the nuclei of uranium-235 atoms split and release energy. This energy is used to heat water and turn it into steam, which is used to drive turbines to generate electricity.

Obama warned that if Tehran violates terms of the deal, "We will turn off the relief and ratchet up the pressure."

You can be sure that President Obama will speak to Prime Minister Netanyahu" on Sunday about the Iran agreement,

A senior administration official said Obama will speak with Netanyahu sometime Sunday.

"Ultimately, we understand why Israel is particularly skeptical about Iran," the official said, adding, "This is not simply about trusting the Iranian government. There are strict verification measures."

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called the deal an opportunity "to avert an unnecessary crisis."

Zarif said he hopes the nuclear agreement will lead to "concrete steps" to improve relations between Iran and Western powers.

As part of the deal, according to Zarif, Iran retains the right to nuclear technology, including the enriching of uranium under the terms of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons -- which requires it not to create nuclear weapons or enable other countries to obtain them.

Iran has agreed to what U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry described as "unprecedented international monitoring" of its nuclear program.

"The first step, let me be clear, does not say that Iran has a right to enrich uranium," Kerry said, appearing to contradict claims earlier by Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

Araghchi -- on Twitter feed commonly attributed to him by Iranian media -- said that "our enrichment program was recognized."

In exchange for Iran's concessions, sanctions on its oil revenues will be eased. But Kerry said the agreement does not roll back the "vast majority of the sanctions that are currently in place."

The deal was formally announced by Catherine Ashton, the EU's foreign policy chief, in Geneva where the foreign ministers representing Iran, the United States, Britain, China, Russia, France and Germany were meeting.

But closed-door negotiations had been taking place for a while.

A senior administration official told CNN that in the months leading up to the Geneva talks, U.S. and Iranian officials held private, previously unknown discussions to generate ideas for the wider P5+1 negotiations.

The official said talks began after Hassan Rouhani was elected Iran's president, and that as the discussions were occurring, U.S. officials were briefing the P5+1 partners. The official suggested other partners were meeting with the Iranians and briefing the U.S. about the progress of those discussions.

The Iran nuclear deal is a first step requiring actions by both sides, which have "a strong commitment to negotiate a final comprehensive solution," Ashton said.

According to a statement released by the White House, the deal halts Tehran's nuclear program, including halting the development at the Arak reactor and requiring all of the uranium enriched to 20% -- close to weapons-grade -- to be diluted so it cannot be converted for military purposes.

The Arak heavy water reactor under construction southwest of Tehran had been a sticking point in earlier negotiations.

For years, Iran and Western powers have left negotiating tables in disagreement, frustration and at times open animosity.

But the diplomatic tone changed with the transfer of power after Iran's election this year, which saw President Hassan Rouhani replace Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Caustic jabs at the United States and bellicose threats toward Israel were a hallmark of Ahmadinejad's foreign policy rhetoric.

He lambasted the West over the economic sanctions crippling Iran's economy and at the same time, pushed the advancement of nuclear technology in Iran.

Rouhani has struck up a more conciliatory tone and made the lifting sanctions against his country a priority.

Despite the sanctions, Iran today has 19,000 centrifuges and is building more advanced ones, according to Mark Hibbs, a nuclear policy expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Most world powers believe that Iran could not realistically build a usable bomb in less than a year, Hibbs said.

Obama Declares Iran Deal 'Important First Step'
    WASHINGTON November 24, 2013 (AP)
By JULIE PACE and DARLENE SUPERVILLE Associated Press

President Barack Obama declared an interim nuclear deal with Iran an "important first step" that cuts off the Islamic republic's most likely path toward a bomb. "These are substantial limitations which will help prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon," Obama said at the White House late Saturday.

The president spoke shortly after the U.S. and five international partners agreed to a short-term deal with Iran that is aimed at paving the way for a broader agreement to curb Tehran's disputed nuclear program. Under terms of the deal, Iran agreed to halt progress on key elements of its nuclear program in exchange for modest relief from U.S. economic sanctions.

Obama pledged to hold off from imposing new sanctions during the terms of the six-month agreement, a position likely to anger some in Congress who have been pushing for even tougher penalties against Iran.

"If Iran does not fully meet its commitments during this six-month phase, we will turn off the relief and ratchet up the pressure," he said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said this week that while he supports the administration's diplomatic effort "we need to leave our legislative options open to act on a new, bipartisan sanctions bill next month" after lawmakers return from a Thanksgiving break.

Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, a potential candidate to succeed Obama in 2016, pledged to work with others in the Senate to increase the economic pressure on Iran until it "completely abandons" its capability to enrich and reprocess the uranium needed to make weapons.

"This agreement makes a nuclear Iran more, not less, likely," Rubio said in a statement.

Rep. Adam Smith of Washington, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, said that, while the deal represents serious progress in the yearslong quest to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions, "far more work remains to be done."

"It is vital that we prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon in a peaceful way," Smith said.

Obama came into office promising to talk to Iran without preconditions. The U.S. and Iran had severed diplomatic ties in 1979 after the Islamic revolution and the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, where dozens of Americans were held hostage for more than a year.

The June election of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, a more moderate-sounding cleric, helped pave the way for a thaw in diplomatic relations with the U.S. and this latest round of nuclear negotiations.

Obama's outreach to Iran has worried Israel and Persian Gulf nations, which fear Iran is using the negotiations as a delay tactic while it continues to pursue a nuclear weapon. The president on Saturday said those nations "have good reason to be skeptical of Iran's intentions." But he said "only diplomacy can bring about a durable solution to the challenge posed by Iran's nuclear program."

Rabbi Steve Gutow, president of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, said that while "Iran has done little to deserve our trust," the agreement "has the potential to serve as a valuable stepping stone to a final agreement that can serve the long-term security interests of the United States, Israel, the Middle East and the entire international community."

Gutow said any final agreement must not leave Iran able to continue its drive for nuclear weapons capability, or able to easily restart its program at any point in the future.

"The menace of a nuclear-armed Iran needs to be eliminated once and for all," Gutow said.

US, Iran nuclear deal spurs bipartisan concern in Congress

    Published November 24, 2013

Congress expressed bipartisan concern Sunday about the deal the United States and allies reached overnight with Iran to halt that country’s nuclear program.

“My greatest concerns are seeing follow-through,” Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told “Fox News Sunday.” “This administration is very big on announcements and less so on following through. [Iran] is spiking the ball in the end zone.”

He also repeatedly said he didn’t want the interim deal to “become the norm.”

Corker was joined on the show by Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., also a member of the chamber’s foreign relations committee.

“We are very concerned as to whether Iran will live up to these agreements,” Cardin said. “Congress needs to be prepared.”

Both suggested that Capitol Hill is prepared to reinstate sanctions that have been lifted in the deal and impose new ones.

Iran and six world powers reached a deal early Sunday that would halt parts of Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for what was described by the Obama administration as “modest relief” from international sanctions.

Obama, speaking from the White House while Secretary of State John Kerry helped ink the agreement in Geneva, called it a “first step toward a comprehensive solution."

The deal, while historic, is a six-month agreement. Republican senators in Washington warned shortly after the terms were announced that Western powers were giving up too much in exchange for too little, in hopes of a longer-term deal. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., said it would give a leading sponsor of terror "billions of dollars in exchange for cosmetic concessions."

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said that the agreement "makes a nuclear Iran more, not less, likely," and called the deal "a blow to our allies in the region who are already concerned about America's commitment to their security and it sends the wrong message to the Iranian people, who continue to suffer under the repressive rule of their leaders who have only their own self-preservation in mind."

But Obama insisted the sanctions relief is reversible if Iran doesn’t live up to its end of the bargain.

"The broader architecture of sanctions will remain in place and we will continue to enforce them vigorously," said Obama, who urged Congress not to pass new sanctions against Iran in light of the agreement, saying "doing so would derail this promising first step, alienate us from our allies, and risk unraveling the coalition that enabled our sanctions to be enforced in the first place."

Under the terms of the agreement, which concluded days of negotiations in Geneva, Iran committed to halt enrichment above a 5 percent threshold and dismantle the technical connections required to enrich uranium above that threshold.

Iran is also required to neutralize its stockpile of near 20 percent enriched uranium, and halt progress on its enrichment capacity. In return, the six world powers (the U.S., Great Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia), have agreed to not impose any new sanctions, suspend sanctions on certain sectors of Iran's economy, and potentially unfreeze $4.2 billion in revenue from oil sales if Iran meets other conditions.

A White House statement also said Iran's nuclear program will be subject to "increased transparency and intrusive monitoring."

Speaking from the White House late Saturday night, Obama said that the terms of the deal were "substantial limitations which will help prevent Iran from building a nuclear weapon. Simply put, they cut off Iran’s most likely paths to a bomb."

However, Obama warned that sanctions relief was dependent on Iran living up to its end of the agreement, saying, "In these negotiations, nothing will be agreed to until everything is agreed to. The burden is on Iran to prove to the world that its nuclear program will be for exclusively peaceful purposes."

Iran President Hassan Rouhani endorsed the agreement in a nationally broadcast speech Sunday, saying the accord recognizes Iran's "nuclear rights" even if that precise language was kept from the final document because of Western resistance.

"No matter what interpretations are given, Iran's right to enrichment has been recognized," said Rouhani, who later posed with family members of nuclear scientists murdered in recent years whose killings Iran has blamed on Israel and its allies.

Saying "trust is a two-way street," Rouhani insisted that talks on a comprehensive agreement should start immediately.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who led his country's delegation, called on both sides to see the agreement as an "opportunity to end an unnecessary crisis and open new horizons."

But reaction in Israel was strongly negative. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Nentanyahu called the deal "a historic mistake" in remarks to his cabinet Sunday. Earlier in the day, Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz, who is responsible for monitoring Iran's nuclear program, said the deal was based on "Iranian deception and self-delusion."

The deal came after the personal intervention by Kerry and other foreign ministers whose presence had raised hopes for a breakthrough.

"The purpose of this is simple," said Kerry, who spoke early Sunday morning, Geneva time. "Requiring Iran to prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program and prove it does not have a nuclear weapon.

"It will make our partners in the region safe. It will make Israel safer."

"Agreement in Geneva," Kerry had tweeted. "First step makes world safer. More work now."

The deal marks a milestone between the two countries, which broke diplomatic ties 34 years ago when Iran's Islamic revolution climaxed in the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Since then, relations between the two countries had been frigid to hostile.

Although the deal lowered tensions between the two countries, friction points remain -- notably Iran's support of the Syrian regime of Bashar Assad. The United States also has said Iran supports terrorism throughout the region and commits widespread human rights violations.

Since it was revealed in 2003, Iran's enrichment program has grown from a few dozen enriching centrifuges to more than 18,000 installed and more than 10,000 operating. The machines have produced tons of low-enriched uranium, which can be turned into weapons grade material.

Iran also has stockpiled almost 440 pounds of higher-enriched uranium in a form that can be converted more quickly to fissile warhead material than the low-enriched uranium. Its supply is nearly enough for one bomb.

Saudi Prince Says Iran Playing Obama Like A Fiddle
    Michael Miller - On November 23, 2013
    http://mikesright.wordpress.com/

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-1...di-prince.html

An influential Saudi prince has offered an astonishingly blunt assessment of Barack Obama and his dealings with Iran over its nuclear threat: Obama is being played. Moreover, the prince even sided with Israel.

“There’s no confidence in the Obama administration doing the right thing with Iran. We’re really concerned — Israel, Saudi Arabia, the Middle East countries — about this,” Prince Alwaleed bin Talal told Bloomberg.

Alwaleed, like Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, believes that Iran, in its ongoing negotiations with the world’s major powers, will pocket whatever sanctions relief it gets without committing to end its nuclear program:

“Why are they offering relief?” Keep the pressure on. Sanctions are what brought about the negotiations to begin with! Why not keep the pressure up?”
Excellent question, Prince Alwaleed. Let’s chalk it up to appeasement and naive wishful thinking, shall we?

“Obama is in so much of a rush to have a deal with Iran He wants anything. He’s so wounded. It’s very scary. Look, the 2014 elections are going to begin. Within two months they’re going to start campaigning. Thirty-nine members of his own party in the House have already moved away from him on ObamaCare. That’s scary for him.”
The prince was also blunt in his assessment of Obama’s embarrassing handling of the Syrian chemical weapons fiasco.

“When he put that red line out, and the red line was crossed, he blinks,” he said, going on to suggest that Obama is mistaken to believe that Syria will, in fact, ship out all of its chemical weapons, as it has agreed to do. “You think the chemicals are going to come out, one hundred percent? Come on. Even if he lets them go, the same people who produced them before will produce them again.”
When Obama “blinked,” Alwaleed suggested, the Arabs came to the conclusion that he would not stand up to Iran, either. And Alwaleed is right, by all appearances. But, hey – if Iran were Israel, and the mullahs were Bibi Netanyahu, it would be a different story, wouldn’t it?

WHY WASN’T PASTOR SAEED ABEDINI HELD IN AN IRANIAN PRISON RELEASED AS PART OF THE IRANIAN DEAL?

    November 24, 2013

Pastor Saeed Abedini is and Iranian-American Christian who has been imprisoned since September 2012 at Evin Prison in Iran. On January 27, 2013 he was sentenced to 8 years imprisonment on charges of evangelizing for his Christian faith. He has been transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison, which is known for brutal murders and unexplained deaths. Iran sends prisoners there to put them out of sight of human rights organizations and the media, which made it difficult to get even this much information. He has yet to be released. This begs the question, Why wasn’t he and many other prisoners held in Iranian prisons part of the deal that was just made between the “world powers” and Iran?

“The Obama Administration has left Pastor Saeed behind. And by failing to secure his release as a precondition to any negotiations, the Obama Administration sends a troubling message to the Iranian government that Americans are expendable,” reported ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice) Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow

Jay Sekulow and the ACLJ have been working for Saeed’s release since the day he was arrested after he went to Iran to help open an orphanage. Saeed, who has a wife and two children, has been refused medical treatment and medication. Yet, he will not deny Christ. In fact, he has lead at least 30 people to Jesus Christ! I admire this man for such a passion for his faith, even if it kills him he WILL NOT deny Christ. May the G-d of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob bless you and your family mightily Saeed Abedini!!! Even his wife, Naghmeh Abedini, has spoken before Congress, the United Nations, and to national and international media with hope of helping free her husband. She says G-d is using the situation to further the gospel through Saeed in the prisons – and through her in every speech she has made.

So why is the U.S. government not even putting this on the table? Why wasn’t he and many others locked up over there released BEFORE they struck a deal?

It appears that Iran had a one-way ticket to get what they wanted, through the back door secret “negotiations”. It is obvious that Obama is really for Iran and not the American people. So this “deal”, which Israel isn’t too happy with, mainly because it’s a deal that only Iran can appreciate, is made and our people weren’t even mentioned? This just makes one’s stomach turn, and lets us know that our own government is okay with leaving people in prisons at various locations around the world, and just forgetting them by never mentioning them. And people wonder why so few Americans have RESPECT for the man that holds the highest position in our United States of America

We need to remember in light of this horrible Iranian nuclear deal that Obama has decimated the missile defense system, purposefully! Remember, that was a few years ago don't forget about that!
