I see this as an interpretation on Iran's part that this country is weak and run by a weak president that threatens countries with the red crayon from their crayon box. Iran is neither dumb or naive and Putin has shown the world how ineffective the US is.

do all planes have the flag of the country they are registered in?

if indeed this is an american plane in a persona non gratis country, why doesn't our country know anything? NSA is suppose to know everything but nothing?

People in this country have already, according to the polls, found this administration to not be honest (getting tired of seeing the word liar all the time). So would they admit they know anything about this plane? Will this be another irs scandal, fast and furious, benghazi etc? This administration has already told the people that they do what they want to do, follow what laws they want to do, enforce the laws they want to do.............and the citizens of this country have no rights to know anything, say anything, do anything.

let's wait and see if they will tell us anything and if they do will it be the truth? Just remember, do not hold your breath

Iran: Mystery Utah jet was chartered by Ghana

Jet that is registered to Bank of Utah in Ogden carried African delegation, officials say.

Iranian officials shed light late Friday on a mystery surrounding a jet registered to Bank of Utah in Ogden that was spotted earlier in the week at Mehrabad Airport in Tehran.

The aircraft had been chartered by the office of Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama and transported his brother with a high-ranking delegation from that African country, a spokeswoman from the Iranian foreign ministry told Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

he plane’s presence in Iran, first reported Tuesday by The New York Times, had sparked speculation of possible violations of Western restrictions on trade with the Iranian government.

The sighting of the jet also threw a spotlight on Bank of Utah’s extensive business dealings in what are known as aircraft trusts, a complex financial instrument that lets the bank hold title to aircraft on behalf of beneficiaries whose identities it keeps confidential.

In addition to its U.S. registration number, the twin-engine Bombardier Challenger 600 jet featured an American flag on its tail and was in a public section of the airport, The Times reported.

None of the plane’s passengers or crew was American, foreign ministry spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham told IRNA. The delegation left Thursday, Afkham said, following a series of meetings with Iranian officials focused on expanding bilateral ties and cooperation.

Saying it had reviewed a confidential document on the plane’s ownership, The Times reported Friday the plane was held in trust by the Ogden bank on behalf of the mining company Engineers and Planners, Ghana’s leading contract-mining firm, based in Accra, Ghana’s capital.

The company’s CEO is Ibrahim Mahama, the president’s brother, according to Ghanaian news sources.

Aircraft trusts allow a wide array of actual owners, be they U.S. citizens or non-citizens, to own, operate and maintain aircraft that are legally registered with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration while still remaining outside of public scrutiny as they travel.

There are FAA records tying Bank of Utah to as many as 1,172 aircraft, ranging from small planes such as the one seen in Iran to Boeing 767s. In fact, Bank of Utah appears to lead other banks across the U.S. for the number of aircraft trusts it holds, a search of the FAA’s database of aircraft ownership has revealed.

Though the trusts list it as the aircraft owner, the small community bank, which maintains 13 branches across Utah, maintains no operational control of or financial interest in the planes, Bank of Utah corporate spokesman Scott Parkinson told The Salt Lake Tribune on Friday.

Though Parkinson characterized Bank of Utah as primarily a commercial lender to small businesses, he said its with work in aircraft trusts was a robust extension of its trust and wealth management services for clients.

Plane with Americans on board lands in Iran

An airliner carrying about 100 Americans from the US airbase at Bagram, Afghanistan, made an emergency landing in southern Iran on Friday, an informed Iranian source has confirmed.

The airport official said the plane had landed at Bandar Abbas International Airport, but did not elaborate.

The airplane chartered by the United Arab Emirate’s Fly Dubai airline landed in the port city of Bandar Abbas in southern Iranian Hormozgan Province after being rerouted because of a "bureaucratic issue... involving the plane's flight plan," the US State Department announced on Friday.

The plane has reportedly taken off from the Iranian airport and landed safely in Dubai.

A US official said the aircraft had not updated its flight plan after leaving Bagram for Dubai several hours late.

Iranian officials first asked the plane to turn around and then to land at Bandar Abbas airport when told it did not have enough fuel to return to Afghanistan, the official said.

In a statement, US State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf rejected media reports that Iranian jets had escorted the Fly Dubai plane.

"No Iranian jets were scrambled in this situation,” she said.

"We appreciate the efforts of all parties to help the passengers get safely to their destination," Harf added.

The US and Iran have had no diplomatic ties for nearly three decades.

looks like the news we get to see everyday is now like a game show where we get to choose what is behind curtain 1, 2, or 3. now if they got to play truth or consequences, we would have a different view.

After Obama Sends Secret Letter to Iran, Romney Lashes Out With a Fierceness We Rarely See
By Kevin Boyd - 9 hours ago

President Obama was elected in 2008 on a pledge of using more “smart diplomacy” to promote American political objectives. He was going to talk to other countries and try to advance mutual objectives.

This has led him to get a new pen pal, the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Fox News reports that Obama wrote Khamenei a letter asking him to join the war against ISIS. He sought to tie any potential alliance to striking a nuclear deal between the U.S. and Iran. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014...up-everything/

The congressional source told Fox News that the letter would upset the inroads they’ve tried to make with “the Sunni league,” noting that the president should have informed Congress of this back-channel if it was in fact going on.

“This f***s up everything,” the source said.

Iran’s government is Shiite-led, while the Islamic State is a Sunni terror group. The source was apparently referring to efforts to rally support among Sunni-led Arab states to confront ISIS.
Mitt Romney condemned the action, calling it “an enormous error.”

    Politico reports: http://www.politico.com/story/2014/1...er-112702.html

“I was frankly stunned that the president of the United States would write a letter of that nature and in effect, legitimize a nation and a leadership which is violating international norms and is threatening the world…”

“This is the fourth time the president has reached out an open hand to Iran,” Romney said. “It continues to diminish himself and America, these acts of his that unfortunately lead bad people to assume that America can be pushed around and I find it very unfortunate.”
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers shared similar sentiments, calling efforts to reach out to Iran behind Congress’ back “really concerning.” http://www.politico.com/story/2014/1...#ixzz3IRgVAeSL

However, the Obama administration did not confirm the letter’s existence and emphasized that they would never give the Iranian regime any sensitive information.

Regardless, it appears that Ayatollah Khamenei, by ignoring Obama’s efforts to reach out, may have unintentionally done Obama and the U.S. a favor in this case.

Obama's "Secret" Letter to Iran's Ayatollah

Obama's zeal for the deal that could allow Iran to continue their nuclear weapons program, just so he can have his "Neville Chamberlain Moment" and say, "There is 'Peace in Our Time' in the Middle East."

A deal with Iran would not be good for any of our allies in the Middle East, especially Israel. That doesn't sound like a great plan to me. But what do I know? It was a "secret" letter, after all. Just sayin'...

President Obama sent 'secret letter' to leader of Iran

The White House has not commented directly on the reported letter

US President Barack Obama is said to have written a secret letter to Iran's supreme leader describing a shared interest in fighting Islamic State.

The letter, reported by the Wall Street Journal, also urges Ayatollah Ali Khamenei toward a nuclear agreement.

The US president stresses any co-operation on fighting ISIS is contingent on Iran reaching such an agreement by a 24 November diplomatic deadline.

The White House has declined to comment on Mr Obama's "private correspondence".

But Republican senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham said it was "outrageous" that the president would approach Iran, given its support for the Syrian government and Shia groups such as Lebanon's Hezbollah.

"The administration needs to understand that this Iranian regime cares more about trying to weaken America and push us out of the Middle East than cooperating with us," they said in a joint statement.

"The consequences of this ill-conceived bargain would destroy the Syrians' last, best chance to live in freedom from the brutal Assad regime."

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has until 24 November to sign to an international nuclear agreement
    Fourth letter

The US has ruled out inviting Iran to join an international coalition it has assembled against IS, but has said Iran has a role to play in the fight against IS.

Islamic State, a Sunni jihadist group, poses a threat to Shia-majority Iran and has taken over large parts of Iran's Shia-dominated ally Iraq.

The group's militants currently control large areas of Iraq and Syria and have carried out mass killings across the region.

But Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ruled out co-operating with the US against IS, accusing Washington of having created the jihadist group as a tool against Iran.

The letter, sent last month, is at least the fourth time Mr Obama has written to the Iranian leader since taking office in 2009 and underscores his view that Iran is important in an emerging campaign against IS.

America's Arab allies are bound to be dismayed by news of the letter. Foreign diplomats said US administration officials they spoke to did not deny its existence.

And key Gulf countries who are part of the current military coalition against IS were not informed about the letter in advance, which diplomats said could undermine trust between US and its partners at a crucial moment.

When the US started secret negotiations with Iran in 2012, it did not inform countries like Saudi Arabia or Israel. They were outraged when news surfaced of the secret channel. This letter will be seen as another example of Mr Obama acting with little regard for his allies as he doggedly pursues a deal with Iran.

American officials will argue they are doing what's best in America's national security interest.

    Deal or no deal?

Officials with the Obama administration have recently talked down the chances of a deal on Iran's nuclear programme, rating it at only 50-50, according to the Wall Street Journal.

US Secretary of State John Kerry is scheduled to begin negotiations on the issue with Iranian counterpart Javad Zarif this weekend in Oman.

World powers suspect Iran of trying to make a nuclear bomb, a claim it denies.

An interim deal agreed late last year gave Iran some relief from sanctions in return for curbs on nuclear activity. But talks later stalled on the extent of uranium enrichment Iran would be allowed and on the timetable for sanctions to be lifted.

On Thursday, White House spokesman Josh Earnest declined to comment directly on the secret letter.

"I can tell you that the policy that the president and his administration have articulated about Iran remains unchanged," he said in response to questions.

Also on Thursday, Republican speaker of the House John Boehner said he did not trust Iran's leaders and said they should not be brought into the fight against IS.

my favorite part is the White House considering this as Mr Obama's "private correspondence".

Obama laughs at Bachmann over request to bomb Iran

US Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann says she told President Barack Obama this week that he must bomb Iran, but the president laughed at her.

Bachmann, who is retiring from Congress at the end of this year, said in an interview published on Thursday afternoon that she confronted Obama at the White House Christmas party on Monday.

“I turned to the president and I said, something to the effect of, ‘Mr. President, you need to bomb the Iranian nuclear facilities, because if you don't, Iran will have a nuclear weapon on your watch, and the course of world history will change,’” the Tea Party firebrand told the Washington Free Beacon, a conservative online newspaper.

"And he got his condescending smile on his face and laughed at me and said, ‘Well, Michele, it’s just not that easy,’" she added.

"And I said to him, ‘No, Mr. President, you’re the president, it will happen on your watch, and you’ll have to answer to the world for this.’ And that was it and then I left. Merry Christmas," she continued.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, Bachmann knew the White House Christmas party for members of Congress probably would be her last chance to try to lobby Obama to bomb Iran, and she did not waste the opportunity, despite the objections of her family members, who did not want to be embarrassed.

In September, Bachmann called President Obama the “first anti-Israel president in American history.”

Israeli officials and some pro-Zionist lawmakers on Capitol Hill have urged Obama to attack Iran over its nuclear program; however, the president has ignored their calls.

Iran rejects the allegations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran says it needs the nuclear program for peaceful purposes, including generating electricity and producing radio-isotopes for medical purposes.

Iran and the six powers – Russia, China, Britain, France, the US and Germany -- are working to reach a final accord aimed at putting an end to the longstanding dispute over Tehran’s nuclear issue.
