    Navy Yard shooting

At least 12 killed in shooting rampage at Washington Navy Yard, chief says
By Jim Miklaszewski, Pete Williams, Richard Esposito and Erin McClam, NBC News
    2 minutes ago

A former naval petty officer packing an assault rifle and two other guns sprayed an office building with bullets at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, killing 12 people in a rampage that paralyzed part of the nation’s capital, authorities said. It was the deadliest mass shooting in the United States since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School last year.

    Aaron Alexis

Authorities said that the gunman, a civilian contractor identified as Aaron Alexis, 34, was killed after exchanging fire with officers who stormed the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command in a massive law enforcement response. “There is no question he would have kept shooting,” Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier said.

Authorities told a late-afternoon press conference that they were still looking for one man considered a possible suspect. Earlier they were looking for two, but they found one and ruled him out as a person of interest, police said.

Besides being the biggest shooting rampage since last December, when 20 children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook in Newtown, Conn., it was the deadliest on a U.S. military installation since 13 people were killed at Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009.

At least four people were wounded, but some reports placed the number as high as 16. Mayor Vincent Gray said there was no information on a motive.

President Barack Obama called it a “cowardly act.” He said the rampage targeted patriots, military and civilian alike, “men and women who were going to work, doing their job, protecting all of us.”

The Navy said the first shots were fired at 8:20 a.m. ET at the Sea Systems Command headquarters. Alexis was carrying an AR-15 military-style semiautomatic rifle, a double-barreled shotgun and a handgun, law enforcement officials said.

Patricia Ward, who works at the Navy Yard, said she had just gotten breakfast in the cafeteria when she heard “three gunshots, pow-pow-pow, straight in a row.”

“All of the people that were in the cafeteria, we all panicked, and we were trying to decide which way we were going to run out,” she said. “I just ran.”

The roughly 3,000 people who work there were told to stay in place. For the next several hours, conflicting reports circulated about whether the shooter was still alive, whether he had accomplices, how many places were active shooting scenes, and how many people were dead and injured.

In the meantime, chaos enveloped the surrounding neighborhood. Flights were briefly grounded at Reagan National Airport. Nearby schools and bridges the headquarters of the Department of Transportation were locked down. Farther away, police stepped up security on the Capitol grounds.

Many of the details were still uncertain at midafternoon. Hours after the shootings, the sergeant-at-arms of the Senate said he had recommended a “shelter-in-place” order to Senate leaders.

Terrie Durham, who works at the Naval Sea Systems Command building, said she saw a gunman who appeared to be wearing dark fatigues. Another worker there, Todd Brundidge, said he heard a fire alarm go off, and later saw the gunman come around the corner. “He turned our way and started firing, and we ran downstairs to get out of the building,” Brundidge said. “No words. He raised the gun and started firing.”

Brian Chaney, who works on the second floor, described it as a typical Monday. He said he took the stairs toward his office and heard what he thought was a locker door slamming. He later heard another round of what turned out to be gunshots. “I never heard any screaming, ‘Oh, my God,’ nothing like that,” he told MSNBC.

A naval security guard was among those shot and was hit in both legs, U.S. military officials said. Washington city police told WRC, the NBC affiliate in Washington, that one of their officers was also among those shot. It was not clear how many of the others shot were civilian and how many were military.

Tim Hogan, a spokesman for Rep. Steven Horsford of Nevada, posted photos to his Twitter account of people tending to at least one person down on a street corner.

It was not clear how Alexis, identified as the gunman, died. He lived in the Queens borough of New York a decade ago and is still listed on voter rolls there. A Navy spokeswoman said Alexis served from May 2007 through January 2011, and was an aviation electrician’s mate — a third-class petty officer — before he was discharged.

The spokeswoman had no details on the discharge.

In Fort Worth, Oui Stuhamtewakul, who identified himself as Alexis’ best friend and former roommate, described Alexis as fluent in Thai.

Oui, the owner of a Thai restaurant in Fort Worth, said Alexis owned a gun and had a concealed-weapons permit. He said they were last in touch four months ago, when Alexis left for Washington.

Washington police issued lookouts for two people they described as possible suspects — a 50-year-old black man with a rifle, wearing an olive drab military uniform, and a white man with a pistol, wearing a short-sleeved, tan uniform and a beret. They later said that the man in the tan outfit was not a suspect.

Dr. Janis Orlowski, the chief medical officer at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said that the hospital was treating three gunshot victims — a woman who was hit in the head and hand, a woman who was hit in the shoulder, and a man, a Washington police officer, who was hit in the legs.

She said that the victims came in alert and talking.

“They’re talking about gunshots that they heard in rapid succession,” she said.

Orlowski described all three as doing relatively well. The police officer was expected to remain in surgery for hours, and was most concerned about talking to his moher. The woman hit in the shoulder was in such good spirits that she was playfully ordering doctors and nurses around. And as for the woman hit in the head, the bullet never touched her skull.

“She has a significant wound, but she will recover without surgery,” Orlowski said. “She is a very, very lucky young lady.”

George Washington University Hospital said it had one patient.

Obama, speaking at an event marking the fifth anniversary of the financial crisis, turned to the shooting and said: “We are confronting yet another mass shooting, and today it happened on a military installation in our nation’s capital.”

“It’s a shooting that targeted our military and civilian personnel,” he said. “These are men and women who were going to work, doing their job, protecting all of us. They’re patriots. And they know the dangers of serving abroad, but today they faced the unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home.”

The Naval Sea Systems Command builds, buys and maintains ships and submarines and their combat systems. The Navy Yard is along the Anacostia River in Washington, near the Washington Nationals baseball stadium. The Nationals postponed their game Monday night against the Atlanta Braves. The notation on the Nationals’ website read, “Postponed: Tragedy.”

Tracy Connor, Charles Hadlock, Michael Isikoff, Kasie Hunt, Alex Johnson, Michael O’Brien and Andrew Rafferty of NBC News contributed to this report.

Obama On Navy Yard Shooting: A 'Cowardly Act' [UPDATE]
    Posted: 09/16/2013 12:38 pm EDT
    Updated: 09/16/2013 4:46 pm EDT

WASHINGTON -- Speaking hours after a mass shooting at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday, President Barack Obama called the incident a "cowardly act" that would be swiftly and "thoroughly" investigated.

"We still don’t know all the facts, but we do know that several people have been shot and some have been killed," he said. "So we are confronting yet another mass shooting and today it happened on a military installation in our nation's capital."

Speaking of the victims, he added: "These are men and women who were going to work, doing their job, protecting all of us. They are patriots and they know the dangers of serving abroad, but today they faced unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home."

Finally, the president pledged to do "everything in our power to ensure that whoever carried out this cowardly act is held responsible."

The president's comments came during a ceremony meant to mark the fifth anniversary of the collapse of U.S. financial markets.

Moments before Obama spoke, Washington D.C. Chief of Police Cathy Lanier said one of the suspected shooters had been killed but two other potential shooters remained at large. (One of those two suspects has since been ruled out.)

At least 13 people were killed in the shooting, including one suspect, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis.

The president has been briefed on the shooting and response throughout the day by top advisers.

"The president has been briefed several times about the unfolding situation at the Washington Navy Yard by Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Lisa Monaco and Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromanaco," a White House official said. "The president directed his team to stay in touch with our federal partners, including the Navy and FBI, as well as the local officials. We urge citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions from the first responders on site."

LIVE VIDEO, DEVELOPING: Reports from local media of a shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. One officer reportedly wounded. Details still developing, http://www.lawofficer.com/article/ne...ton-dc-navy-ya

Looks like this is true. Multiple credible sources refer to it. Here's a Washington Times editorial written about it right after the Ft. Hood shootings:

End Clinton-era military base gun ban
By THE WASHINGTON TIMES - Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Time after time, public murder sprees occur in “gun-free zones” - public places where citizens are not legally able to carry guns. The list is long, including massacres at Virginia Tech and Columbine High School along with many less deadly attacks. Last week’s slaughter at Fort Hood Army base in Texas was no different - except that one man bears responsibility for the ugly reality that the men and women charged with defending America were deliberately left defenseless when a terrorist opened fire.

Among President Clinton’s first acts upon taking office in 1993 was to disarm U.S. soldiers on military bases. In March 1993, the Army imposed regulations forbidding military personnel from carrying their personal firearms and making it almost impossible for commanders to issue firearms to soldiers in the U.S. for personal protection. For the most part, only military police regularly carry firearms on base, and their presence is stretched thin by high demand for MPs in war zones.

Because of Mr. Clinton, terrorists would face more return fire if they attacked a Texas Wal-Mart than the gunman faced at Fort Hood, home of the heavily armed and feared 1st Cavalry Division. That’s why a civilian policewoman from off base was the one whose marksmanship ended Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan’s rampage.

Everyone wants to keep people safe - and no one denies Mr. Clinton’s good intentions. The problem is that law-abiding good citizens, not criminals, are the ones who obey those laws. Bans end up disarming potential victims and not criminals. Rather than making places safe for victims, we unintentionally make them safe for the criminal - or in this case, the terrorist.

The wife of one of the soldiers shot at Fort Hood understands all too well. In an interview on CNN Monday night, Anchor John Roberts asked Mandy Foster how she felt about her husband’s upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. Ms. Foster responded: “At least he’s safe there and he can fire back, right?”

It is hard to believe that we don’t trust soldiers with guns on an Army base when we trust these very same men in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr. Clinton’s deadly rules even disarmed officers, the most trusted members of the military charged with leading enlisted soldiers in combat. Six of the dead and wounded had commissions.

Most people understand that guns deter criminals. Research also shows that the presence of more guns limits the damage mass murderers can unleash. A major factor in determining how many people are harmed by these killers is the time that elapses between the launch of an attack and when someone - soldier, civilian or law enforcement - arrives on the scene with a gun to end the attack. All the public shootings in the United States in which more than three people have been killed have occurred in places where concealed handguns have been banned.

Thirteen dead bodies in a Texas morgue are the ultimate fruit of gun-control illogic - in which guns are so feared that government regulation even tries to keep them out of the hands of trained soldiers. With the stroke of a pen, President Obama can end Mr. Clinton’s folly and allow U.S. soldiers to protect themselves. Because we clearly cannot protect our soldiers from harm, the least we owe them is the right to protect themselves.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting today that the family of alleged Washington Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis issued a statement apologizing for the “inconvenience” of losing a loved one to a mass murderer. http://www.star-telegram.com/2013/09...ashington.html

    Family of gunman Aaron Alexis:

"Our hearts go out to you.We apologize for the inconvenience of losing a loved one,we also lost a loved one."

    6:34 PM - 16 Sep 2013
To be fair, we doubt the family was expecting to be making any sort of statement today; for now, though, it’s a little difficult to work up tears over the loss of Alexis while 12 of his victims lie dead.

Navy Yard shooter had at least two gun-related incidents in past

FORT WORTH — Friends say Aaron Alexis regularly meditated at a local Buddhist temple, was unfailingly courteous and never showed signs of the violence that is now his legacy. But police reports paint a darker picture of the Fort Worth man, including an anger-fueled “blackout” and shooting in Seattle in 2004 and, more recently, a firearms incident at a Fort Worth apartment, after which a neighbor told police that she was “terrified” of him.

One friend said that Alexis, a former electrician’s mate in the Navy, was upset with the government because of a dispute over benefits.
Alexis, 34, is accused of opening fire on workers at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday. Twelve people were killed and several others wounded before Alexis was fatally shot.

Authorities said they have not established a motive for the shooting. “I don’t think he’d do this,” said Nutpisit Suthamtewakul, who described himself as Alexis’ “best friend” and roommate for three years.

“He has a gun, but I don’t think he’s that stupid,” said Suthamtewakul, owner of Happy Bowl Thai in White Settlement, where Alexis also worked as a waiter at times. “He didn’t seem aggressive to me.”

Alexis was arrested by Seattle police in 2004 after shooting out two tires of a car parked next door to his home. He told authorities that construction workers had “disrespected him.”

He also told police that he had blacked out and didn’t remember the shooting until hours later, according to a police report posted by the Seattle Times.

The Fort Worth incident happened in September 2010. Alexis was arrested after shooting a hole through the floor of a woman’s apartment.

The woman, who was not identified, told police that Alexis had confronted her in a parking lot a few days earlier about making too much noise and that she felt the shooting was intentional.

He said the gun had discharged while he was cleaning it, and he was never formally charged in the case. Alexis was in the Navy from 2007 to 2011 and was most recently stationed at Naval Air Station Fort Worth, according to Lt. Cmdr. Sarah Blansett, a Navy spokeswoman in McLean, Va.

He was a petty officer 3rd class in the Navy Reserve’s Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 46, according to the Navy. It was not immediately clear when or under what circumstances he was discharged from the Navy.

Friends said he left because he didn’t like to get up early and had complained about being underpaid. “But I don’t think that’s a reason to kill people,” Suthamtewakul said.

    ‘Always very polite’

Alexis had recently visited Thailand and had been to Japan with a computer defense contractor, where he worked in information technology, said Sandy Guerra-Cline, a regular customer at Happy Bowl. “He is not a guy that talked about guns or talked about anything violent,” said Guerra-Cline, who works in the Star-Telegram newsroom. “As a matter of fact, my best memories of him were of him sitting at one of the tables at Happy Bowl trying to teach himself Thai.”

Alexis most recently rented a small house near White Settlement Road and Cherry Lane in Fort Worth, but he had not lived there for six to eight months, said his landlord, Somsak Srisan. “Oh boy, I can’t believe this,” Srisan said. “He was always very polite to me.”

Srisan said he believed Alexis lived alone at the modest house in west Fort Worth. “When he lived at my house, I never saw him get angry about anything,” Srisan said. “My feeling is, if he was angry about anything, he didn’t show that to me.”

He saw Alexis meditate and said he always remained calm around him. “I can’t believe he would do anything like this,” Srisan said. “He always behaved well around me.”

Alexis also stayed with Nutpisit Suthamtewakul and his wife, Kristi. She said Alexis, as a civilian contractor, was upset with the government over some sort of dispute concerning benefits. She said she didn’t know much more about it because “Aaron is a very private person.”

She said that when he lived with her and her husband, he would become upset when he could not pay his share of the utilities.

She also said Alexis held a concealed handgun license, and when he helped out at the restaurant, she knew he was carrying a pistol. “You wouldn’t know it,” she said. “His shirt was down over it.”

Kristi Suthamtewakul said that Alexis moved out about five months ago and that she hadn’t seen him since. She showed a photo of Alexis taken at Christmas in which he’s smiling and wearing a watch cap.

Mike Ritrovato, another friend, said Alexis was an “easygoing guy” who liked to play “shoot-em-up” video games. He said that Alexis bragged about his shooting skills but that he had never seen him with a gun.

Ritraovato, who was at Happy Bowl on Monday, said he has not seen Alexis for about five to six months.

    Arrested in Seattle

In 2004, Alexis was living in Seattle with his grandmother.

On May 6, two construction workers watched as Alexis walked out of the home, pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired three times into the rear tires of a parked Honda Accord.

The car was owned by a construction worker, according to a police report. Alexis told police that workers had “mocked” and “disrespected him,” according to a Seattle police report. Alexis told police that he had an anger-fueled “blackout.”

His father told police that his son was in New York on 9-11 and had participated in rescue attempts, according to the police report.

The father said family members believed that Alexis had anger-management issues related to PTSD.

On Monday, Alexis’ family said in a statement: “Our hearts go out to you. We apologize for the inconvenience of losing a loved one. We also lost a loved one.”

    ‘Terrified’ of Alexis

Some six years later, in Fort Worth, police were called to The Orion Oak Hills apartments on a report that someone had fired a shot through the floor of a woman’s apartment.

She told police that Alexis, who lived beneath her, had called police on her several times in the past for “being loud.”

The woman told police that she was “terrified” of Alexis. “He said that he was trying to clean his gun while cooking and that his hands were slippery. He told me that he began to take the gun apart when his hands slipped and pulled the trigger, discharging a round into the ceiling,” the police report states.

Police arrested Alexis on suspicion of discharging a firearm in a municipality, a Class A misdemeanor. “After reviewing the facts presented by the police department, it was determined that the elements constituting recklessness under Texas law were not present and a case was not filed,” said Melody McDonald, a spokeswoman with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office.

The Orion at Oak Hill apartments in Fort Worth began eviction efforts against Alexis later in September 2010. Records show that he moved from the Oak Hill apartments in December 2010.

Obama Portrays Naval Yard Shooting as Workplace Violence, Sets the Stage for Gun Control Push

    http://www.tpnn.com/obama-portrays-n...-control-push/

Reports continue to unfold as America watches the developments in Washington, D.C., where at least one gunman has opened fire on Navy and civilian personnel at the Naval Sea Systems Command building in D.C.

Reports indicate that a tall, black male opened fire throughout the building with what is likely to be an AR-15 rifle. Reports are still uncertain as some have claimed that as many as three shooters may have taken part in the carnage. Twelve are believed to be dead from the deadly rampage and police are still rapidly investigating, trying to discover what happened.

While Americans watch with horror, the truth is that not much is known at this point in time. The building went into lockdown as the first shots rang out and the details have yet to fully emerge. Though reports indicate that the shooter, who is now dead, is a former Navy employee named Aaron Alexis, much is not known regarding motives.

However, that has not stopped President Obama from entering into the discussion to drive the conversation from any discussion of domestic terrorism and simultaneously begin the earliest stages of what is sure to be yet another push for increased gun control.

President Obama began his address by admitting that the facts were not yet known, stating,

“We still don’t know all the facts, but we do know that several people have been shot, and some have been killed. So we are confronting yet another mass shooting — and today, it happened on a military installation in our nation’s capital.

It’s a shooting that targeted our military and civilian personnel. These are men and women who were going to work, doing their job, protecting all of us. They’re patriots, and they know the dangers of serving abroad — but today, they faced unimaginable violence that they wouldn’t have expected here at home.”
Obama is correct in that this is horrendous. However, Obama conspicuously glossed over any mentioning of the potential domestic terrorism component that may have driven the attack.

Of course, we don’t know much about the attack on the Navy building. However, President Obama seems to be framing this discussion as a discussion over workplace violence while omitting the possibility that an attack on a Naval building could actually be an instance of terrorism.

The Obama Administration has received criticism since the 2009 Fort hood Shooting when after Nidal Hasan, a radical Islamic jihadist, opened fire on the military installation, the Defense Department classified the attack as an instance of “workplace violence,” while dodging discussions of the dangers of radical Islam.

Whether the Naval shooting is an act of terrorism or merely an instance of workplace violence has yet to be seen. President Obama’s address, however, seems to set the stage for discussion geared towards workplace violence and the supposed need for gun control at a time when enough facts aren’t known.

An unnecessary reminder about initial media reports concerning the Navy Yard shootings (or any breaking story)
Update: FBI: Shooter not armed with AR-15

    By Doug Powers • September 17, 2013 10:48 AM

Don’t believe anything you read in papers, on the Internet or hear on TV. Just wait a bit.

That’s my advice, not that you should heed it, because I just told you not to.

Here are only a couple of the reasons why:

Yesterday, after the horrible killing spree at the Washington Navy Yard that left many dead, CNN’s Piers Morgan did his thing:

    Piers Morgan ✔ @piersmorgan

The Wash Navy Yard shooter had 3 guns including AR-15 assault rifle
    - same killing machine used at Aurora and Sandy Hook.

    4:29 PM - 16 Sep 2013
    There were others. http://twitchy.com/2013/09/16/unmiti...yard-shooting/

That was of course based on “initial reports” from much of the media, and before anybody knew all the facts, the calls for more gun control were flying. Oddly enough, one of the few entities to avoid using the shootings to score disgusting political points — the NRA — was one of those criticized for not using the shootings to score disgusting political points. http://twitchy.com/2013/09/16/pathet...yard-shooting/ Go figure.

This morning, Piers “goodbye AR-15, hello musket” Morgan’s own network is now running this story: http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/17/us/ar-...ate/?hpt=hp_t1

A U.S. law enforcement official said Monday that gunman Aaron Alexis unleashed a barrage of bullets using an AR-15, a rifle and a semi-automatic handgun. Authorities believed the AR-15 was used for most of the shooting, the official said. The news prompted Sen. Dianne Feinstein, one of the strongest proponents of a ban on assault weapons like the AR-15, to issue a statement the same day asking, “When will enough be enough?”

However, federal law enforcement sources told CNN Tuesday that authorities have recovered three weapons from the scene of the mass shooting, including one — a shotgun — that investigators believe Alexis brought in to the compound. The other two weapons, which sources say were handguns, may have been taken from guards at the Navy complex.

The sources, who have detailed knowledge of the investigation, cautioned that initial information that an AR-15 was used in the shootings may have been incorrect.
Now, maybe Alexis did use an AR-15 (note: see update below). After all, the above report that he might not have used one comes from the same people who reported that he did use one. They’ve certainly covered all the bases.

Last night, NBC reported this: http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013...g-the-way?lite

The gunman was armed with an assault-style rifle, a shotgun and a handgun when he was killed, authorities said. But law enforcement officials told NBC News they believed he arrived packing only the shotgun, which he bought last week from a gun dealer in Lorton, Va., about 20 miles from Washington.
    '

So now there are three versions of the story: 1) Alexis arrived with an AR-15, a shotgun and a handgun. 2) He arrived with a shotgun but obtained the “assault-style rifle” and handgun on site. 3) He didn’t use an AR-15 at all, but rather had a shotgun and two handguns. The only similar element present in all three possible scenarios is the advice of Joe Biden, but who knows what really happened. http://michellemalkin.com/2013/02/20/joe-biden-shotgun/

The fact is that we don’t know what all the facts are, but it’s laughable that the media outlets that have been pumping out so much information that will ultimately turn out to be false (like this http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/...ts-172737.html ) are the same ones who claim to be the “real journalists.”

One thing that appears to be the case is that Alexis reportedly had mental problems http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories...09-17-08-03-32 which is something those who instinctively jump into “gun grab” mode fail to address while they’re busy calling for more laws that are somehow supposed to stop people who don’t obey laws.

    Update:

    Pamela Brown @PamelaBrownCNN

FBI Washington field office just confirmed gunman was NOT armed with AR15.
Spokesperson says 1 shotgun and 2 pistols recovered

@saxmagc93 Does it really matter what kind of gun was used? The people are just as dead regardless.

Today Marks The 16th American Mass Shooting Since Obama Became President
    September 16, 2013

    Conspiracy theory overload ?

When you add up the numbers, a very disturbing picture of Obama’s presidency begins to unfold. He was elected as the “racial uniter”, the Nobel Peace Prize president who was going to “stop the rise of the oceans” and “heal our planet.”

Yet his 4 and one half years of occupying the desk at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue hide a sinister statistic – America has had 15 mass shootings since he became president, and today’s massacre at the Navy Shipyard now brings that total to 16. And since this is a list of shootings only, it does not include the Boston Bombing Massacre that Obama used to roll out martial law for a 24-hour period in Boston.

    How do you explain that?

A list of the 15 American mass shootings since 2009:

1). December 14, 2012 — Newtown, Conn. – 27 dead (including gunman). The shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday was the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, leaving 27 dead — including 20 young children. President Obama gave an emotional address, calling for “meaningful action”

2). September 27, 2012 — Minneapolis, Minn. – 7 dead (including gunman), 2 injured. Andrew John Engeldinger, a recently laid off employee of Accent Signage Systems, entered the office building and opened fire. (No public comments from the president.)

3). August 5, 2012 — Oak Creek, Wis. – 7 dead (including gunman), 4 injured. White supremacist Wade Michael Page entered a Sikh Temple, opening fire on congregants. He later shot and injured a police officer responding to the scene.

4). July 20, 2012 — Aurora, Colo. — 12 dead, 59 injured. During a midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises,” a gunman opened fire on the suburban Denver movie theater, killing 12 and injuring dozens of others. Two days later, Obama delivered a ten-minute speech from the University of Colorado that made no mention of gun control.

5). May 31, 2012 — Seattle, Wash. – 6 dead (including gunman). A man opened fire in a cafe, fatally wounding four people, then killed another in a carjacking before killing himself. (No public comments from the president.)

6). April 2, 2012 — Oakland, Calif. — 7 dead. A former student of Oikos University, a Korean college, entered a building on the campus and shot repeatedly at random targets. (No public comments from the president)

7). February 22, 2012 — Norcross, Ga. — 5 dead (including gunman). A man shot and killed two of his sisters and their husbands and then himself in a Korean health spa. (No public comments from the president.)

8). October 12, 2011 — Seal Beach, Calif. — 8 dead, 1 injured. Scott Evans Dekraai, 41, stormed a hair salon where his ex-wife worked and killed eight people. (No public comments from the president.)

9). January 8, 2011 — Tucson, Ariz. — 6 dead, 14 injured. Jared Lee Loughner, 22, opened fire in a Safeway parking lot, killing six people and injuring others including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head at point-blank range. Two months later, Obama addressed gun control issues in an op-ed for the Arizona Daily Star

10). August 3, 2010 — Manchester, Conn. — 9 dead (including gunman), 2 injured. A driver for Hartford Distributors killed eight people and then himself in this workplace shooting. (No public comments from the president.)

11). November 29, 2009 — Parkland, Wash. — 5 dead (including gunman). A Washington man walked into a coffee shop and shot four police officers execution-style. (No public comments from the president.)

12). November 5, 2009 — Fort Hood, Texas — 13 dead, 30 injured (including gunman). In the deadliest shooting to ever happen on an American military base, an Army Major serving as a psychiatrist went on a shooting spree that killed 13.

13). April 3, 2009 — Binghamton, N.Y. — 14 dead (including gunman), 4 injured. Jiverly Wong, a naturalized immigrant from Vietnam, gunned down students and employees at the American Civic Association, where he had been taking English lessons.

14). March 10, 2009 — Geneva County, Ala. — 11 dead (including gunman), 6 injured. A 28-year-old man killed his mother then drove ten miles to kill several members of his extended family, neighbors and a bystander. The victims ranged in age from 18 months to 74 years old. (No public comments from the president.)

15). March 29, 2009 — Carthage, N.C. — 8 dead, 3 injured (including gunman). A gunman opened fire on a nursing home, killing seven residents and a nurse. (No public comments from the president.) source – HuffPost

Minor correction: An AR-15 was used during the Washington Navy Yard rampage
    By Doug Powers • September 18, 2013 12:04 AM

In an update to this story, I mentioned that that an AR-15 had not been used during Aaron Alexis’ rampage at the Washington Navy Yard, http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/...bout-navy-yar/ in spite of many early reports to the contrary. http://twitchy.com/2013/09/17/some-o...r-memory-hole/

    I stand corrected.

Piers Morgan has been somewhat vindicated and can un-delete some tweets, because an AR-15 is reportedly responsible for one death that terrible day: That fatality being… Aaron Alexis. http://ace.mu.nu/archives/343463.php

More about that at NRO. http://www.nationalreview.com/corner...rles-c-w-cooke
