7 Anti-Gun Myths That Need to Be Debunked ASAP
Matt MacBradaigh ~ 22 hours ago

Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, America has been embroiled in a renewed gun control debate. In the Information Age there can be a lot of misinformation, and gun control is unfortunately no exception. Here are some of the ways you are being misled.

    1. "Assault Weapons"

The term "assault weapon" is a made-up political term. AR-15's are not military rifles; so unscrupulous politicians refer to them as "military-style assault weapons." 'Style' – as in cosmetic appearance – is the only true word in that description. The Military uses the M4A1 carbine rifle, which looks outwardly very much like an AR-15, but they do not have the same functionality; AR-15s are not machine guns, though the terminology used is meant to imply they are. Senator Diane Feinstein (R-Calif.) says AR-15's are designed for killing as many people in close quarters combat as possible, when in fact the AR-15 is an intermediate to distance rifle with a range of 400-600m. Feinstein and others claim AR-15's are not used for hunting; but in fact there are dozens of varieties of AR-15 used for hunting everything from varmint/small game to deer, elk, and dangerous game. The AR-15 is not the weapon of choice for most mass shooters according to James Alan Fox, a highly respected criminologist from Northeastern University in Boston; handguns are. In fact, rifle homicides comprise a very small amount of homicides, accounting for less than 3% of homicides (323 out of 12,664 in 2011) mass shootings or otherwise.

    2. "High Capacity Magazines"

Some politicians would have us believe that so-called "high capacity" magazines are responsible for a wave of death sweeping the nation. Academic, scholarly research shows the vast majority of homicides average four shots with less than 10 shots fired. While the Aurora shooter infamously used a 100-round magazine drum, these are novelty items that are prone to jam. In fact, it did jam probably saving lives. But mass shooters don't need 100-round magazines to commit atrocity – the shooters at Virginia Tech and Columbine used 10-round magazines, they just brought a lot of them (17 and 13 respectively). James Alan Fox states mass shooters often meticulously plan their attacks in advance; a high capacity magazine ban will not deter them as Virginia Tech and Columbine illustrate.

    3. Gun Show "Loophole"

Several people, including President Obama have stated that 40% of guns were bought via "gun show loopholes." This is not true. For one, the term "gun show loophole" implies that people are deviously getting around something when in actuality; it is just selling personal private property and is not illegal or nefarious. Additionally, private sales may not actually occur at a gun show at all. More important than loose terminology is that this claim is based on a study from 1994 of 251 people. The Washington Post evaluated this claim with the study's original authors and says the president distorted the truth. The actual range is 14%-22% with a plus or minus error margin of 6%. This means the final accurate range of this study is as low as 8%, but no more than 28%; neither figure is 40%. Further, it's implied that closing private sales would solve the issue of criminals obtaining guns; it doesn't. It fails to address illegal trafficking and straw man purchases. A Department of Justice study indicates that 78.8% of criminals get guns from friends or family (39.6%) or from the street/illegally (39.2%). To this point, the FBI states there are 1.2 million gang members in U.S. and that gangs illegally traffic guns as addition to narcotics.

    4. Mass Shootings Are Not Increasing:

Former President Bill Clinton, Mother Jones and others have claimed that mass shootings are increasing. Once again not true. James Alan Fox's analysis of the Mother Jones' study indicates they left out mass murders which made it seem there was an increase after the Federal assault weapon ban expired (they've updated their story since). Some mass murders receive more media attention than others, however the number has been consistently about 20 annually since 1976. The number dead from these mass shootings fluctuates from about 25 to 150, depending on the year (Fox's chart is shown above). In 2012, it was less than 100. Though tragic, this represents a fraction of 1% of homicides. In recent years, homicides by raw number peaked in 1991 at 24,700; it's dropped in half since, and the homicide rate per 100,000 people today is less than it was even in 1900

    5. Anti-Gun Organizations Lump in Suicide & Injuries With Crime Data:

After a mass murder shooting anti-gun organizations like the Brady campaign inevitably call for gun restrictions; these organizations also cite gun violence data other than crime data to include suicides and injuries. This is misleading. Although accidents and suicide are public health concerns, it is disingenuous to include them with homicide in response to a horrific crime. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), suicide rates have crept up slightly 2000-2009, but are still lower than the rate per 100,000 from 1950-1990. It's not accurate to say guns contribute to suicide causal factors since the rate is lower now. And ultimately, legislation aimed to prevent crime by banning weapons and limiting magazine capacity has no reasonable connection to either suicide or accidents. We ought to compare apples to apples: suicide with suicide prevention, accidents with safety programs, and homicide with policy that would realistically reduce homicide.

    6. Too Many Are Being Killed:

This statement is political gaming and wordplay. How many dead would be okay? Who wouldn't want less murder? Ideally, zero would be the goal, but that begs the question of how to prevent any tendency of violence in humans. This phrase is not only meaningless in terms of contributing to policy that achieves a positive end result, but also dangerous in that the appeal to emotion runs the risk of circumventing genuine solution in favor of sound byte. It makes sense to try to achieve goals with policies other than those proven to be ineffective, as the previous Federal assault weapons ban was. Lastly, homicides are at an all time low.

    7. False Zero-Sum Dichotomy - "Either/Or":

Famous anti-gun rights advocate New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, "I want the Congress to have to stand up and say 'I'm with the NRA and support killing our children', or 'No'" (Time magazine, January 28, 2013, p.30). On CNN's Piers Morgan, Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) said, "the NRA is enablers of mass murder." This overly simplistic incendiary rhetoric does nothing to further our national discussion, and falsely frames the debate as a zero-sum, winner-take-all, 'either/or' proposition – either you hug a gun or hug a kid, but you couldn't possibly be for both gun rights and your child's safety. That is preposterous. The NRA is not "the gun industry," and preservation of the Second Amendment is not of interest only to gun manufacturers. Nearly half of NRA funding comes from individual donors. The NRA is comprised of average people who want safe neighborhoods, schools, and streets. Rather than offer ridiculous false dichotomy and grandstanding, we should be looking for genuine solutions.

    BONUS: We Need More Laws:

This is the granddaddy lie. We already have a lot of laws. It's illegal to kill your mom, steal a gun, take that gun onto school property, forcibly break and enter, and murder kids. We already have laws preventing mentally ill & felons from obtaining guns, and we have a background check system (NICS). The Sandy Hook shooter was denied to legally purchase a gun because of the NICS system. We tried a federal assault weapons ban (AWB) before. What we do need is better enforcement of existing laws. Congress has not fully funded NICS. Many states do not fully report felony and mental health data to NICS. The Justice Department only prosecutes a fraction of those who criminally falsify background check forms. We desperately need to engage in genuine discussion about real solutions to the violence problem. These solutions are not likely to yield instantaneous results, or win the next election cycle; yet it is what we would do if we were serious about addressing the issue. The underlying causes include: gang activity, which accounts for 48-90% of violent crime depending on jurisdiction; drug abuse, the single biggest predictor of violence with-or-without mental illness; concentrated urban population and poverty; and mental illness, including de-institutionalization, treatment and intervention, and other facets of mental health.

Make no mistake, this is what they want nationally but have to take it one step at a time: CONFISCATION http://nation.foxnews.com/gun-contro...#ixzz2KtbM3U8Q

    February 14, 2013

Missouri Democrats Introduce Legislation to Confiscate Firearms - Gives Gun Owners 90 Days to Turn in Weapons

Missouri Democrats introduced an anti-gun bill which would turn law-abiding firearm owners into criminals. They will have 90 days to turn in their guns if the legislation is passed.

Here’s part of the Democratic proposal in Missouri:

    4. Any person who, prior to the effective date of this law, was legally in possession of an assault weapon or large capacity magazine shall have ninety days from such effective date to do any of the following without being subject to prosecution:

    (1) Remove the assault weapon or large capacity magazine from the state of Missouri;

    (2) Render the assault weapon permanently inoperable; or

    (3) Surrender the assault weapon or large capacity magazine to the appropriate law enforcement agency for destruction, subject to specific agency regulations.

    5. Unlawful manufacture, import, possession, purchase, sale, or transfer of an assault weapon or a large capacity magazine is a class C felony.

I wonder if a "Healthy Home" is - by their definition - a Gun Free Zone ? http://www.bigbigforums.com/news-inf...gy-action.html

ADVANCING HEALTHY HOUSING: A STRATEGY FOR ACTION!” : The Strategy Report actually states: “The primary goal of the HHWG (Healthy Homes Work Group) is to promote nationwide access to safe and healthy homes.” Access? Yes, Mr. Obama wants to snoop around your home, under the disguise of making it healthy. Keep the federal government out of your business. Be sure to fax the United States Congress and tell them to stay out of your private home!!

How come when people are talking about mass shootings ... no one ever mentions Kent State ?

When a Liberal asks you about guns, you ask them this. The Tea Party is about common sense, something the Left in America has lacked for decades. The Tea Party move is about bring sanity back to politics and life in general. It’s about time we spoke up, because the politicians no longer speak for us!

Cave full of weapons discovered by California deputies

An arsenal of more than 100 firearms, cash and armor has been found in a cave in northern California. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By Matthew DeLuca, Staff Writer, NBC News

Deputies in northern California have discovered a massive cache of drugs, cars, and weapons, including a belt-fed machine gun and more than 100 pounds of marijuana, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s department announced on Wednesday.

A deputy uncovered the firearms on the 55-acre property of Ryan Floyd. They said 111 of them were stashed in a cave that had been camouflaged with rocks and brush; at least 20 of the weapons have been confirmed stolen, according to the sheriff’s office.

Among the weapons, many of which were loaded, was a fully automatic, World War II-era MG 42 caliber machine gun, along with a full belt of ammunition. Also in the cave were several assault-style rifles including Colt AR-15s, as well as sawed-off shotguns and Tech Nine and SKS assault weapons.

A number of the weapons are thought to be fully automatic, according to the sheriff’s office, and were fully loaded when found by a deputy. “It was like enough for a small militia out there,” said Lt. Steve Knight of the Humboldt County Sheriff's office. “As far as why he was holding onto this large quantity of weapons, that’s the one million dollar question.”

Floyd is a longtime resident of the Humboldt County area, Knight said.

The man may have amassed the weapons with plans of selling them on the black market, said Sheriff Michael Downey. “Based on what I saw, these were probably weapons obtained ... over the years either by theft or other means, and probably being sold on the black market somewhere along the way,” Downey said.

Also on the property in Garberville, Calif., deputies said they found jewelry that an area resident had reported stolen, according to the sheriff’s office, as well as stolen construction equipment including a tractor, a concrete cutter, an air compressor, and numerous chainsaws. Many of the items discovered had been reported stolen in the area, the sheriff’s office said.

A woman, Deanna McDonald, 33, and two small children were on the property at the time of the search, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies issued McDonald, who is not supposed to own a gun, a notice for possession of a loaded weapon.

In previous searches of the property over the past week, police made numerous other discoveries of contraband. Law enforcement first became interested in Floyd, 30, on Feb. 2, when a deputy tried to pull over a black Chevy pickup that was driving erratically. The truck, later found to have been reported stolen from a burglarized home, was discovered empty by police after plunging down a hillside and crashing into a tree. Deputies began to look for Floyd and Oregon resident Honey Walsh, 29, as persons of interest.

Deputies and county Drug Task Force agents searched Floyd’s residence on Flint Rock Road in Garberville five days later, and arrested the man on an outstanding no-bail felony warrant for narcotics possession. He is being held without bail, Downey said. A preliminary probation search yielded 45 pounds of dried marijuana, more than $10,000 in cash, and heroin, along with scales and drug paraphernalia. Also found was a handgun, body armor, and numerous high-capacity magazines full of ammunition. Police also reported finding evidence of numerous vehicles, including one that was confirmed stolen, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

A second man, 48-year-old Gregory Benson, was also arrested on the property during the Feb. 7 search for illegal possession of ammunition and a firearm by a prohibited person.

As police continued to scour the property, they found a stolen trailer, more bulletproof vests, methamphetamine, and more high-capacity magazines along with thousands of rounds of ammunition. They also found numerous empty gun holsters and rifle cases, leading them to suspect there might be more weapons on the property, and the discovery of the cave stash.

Downey said he encountered Floyd’s father Wally, now deceased, multiple times on the sprawling property about a decade ago on drug and theft charges. “This is a piece of property I had been to numerous times surrounding the same type of criminal activity,” Downey said.

A total of 117 pounds of marijuana have been seized on the property. The investigation is ongoing, and the California Highway Patrol is assisting the sheriff’s office in determining whether any of the other vehicles discovered on the property had been stolen. “There’s so much property out there, it’s hard trying to figure out what’s stolen and what’s not stolen,” Knight said.

List Of Obama 23 Executive Orders and Actions On Gun Control
    – With Our Snide Comments
    January 16, 2013 5:32 pm

Here is the list from the White House of President Obama's 23 executive orders or executive actions he will take on gun control. While these measures do not look all that harmful to the in wording below, remember, this is essentially a White House press release and what you read below is not the actual language of the executive orders the President will take. No one will get to see those until they are a done deal.

Check out the list below with our snide commentary on some in bold:

    1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

    What, that isn't available already?

    2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

    3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

So you mean bribes and pork funded with taxpayer money?

    4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

Adam Lanza was a dangerous person and he found a way to get his mothers legal guns.

    5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

Don't they do this already ??

    6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

Where do you think they could go with this? Will "provide guidance" turn into, "do what we say or else!"

    7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

Thanks guys, but there are lot of programs like this already around the country and the NRA is doing a fine job of it. BTW, criminals are not interested in responsible gun ownership.

    8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

Don't like the wording of this at all. When will the word "review" turn into some arbitrary draconian law?

    9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

Here again, don't law enforcement officials do this already?

    10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

And what will you do when stolen guns are found in the commission of most gun crimes? Will you rescind the assault weapons ban? Probably not.

    11. Nominate an ATF director.

We're sure it will be a Socialist just like most of Obama's appointees.

    12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations.

Stay out of the line of fire when nutcases are shooting at you. Don't run with you DHS-mandated scissors.

    13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

This is about as vague as where the President was really born and what he did in college. Hold on to your hat, folks, this could mean anything!

    14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

Gun crime is a disease? Since when?

    15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

How much more effective could a trigger lock and a locked gun cabinet be? Stupid idea.

    16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

It should because it really isn't any of their business.

    17. Release a letter to health-care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law-enforcement authorities.

    Duh ??

    18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

Will liberals ask, "what if the resource officer is a whacked out child molester" like they did when the NRA suggested having armed guards in schools?

    19. Develop model emergency-response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

    20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental-health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

It takes an executive frickin order to write a simple letter? This just shows how inefficient our government is.

    21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

    22. Commit to finalizing mental-health-parity regulations.

    23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

And how much say will the pharmaceutical industries that rake in billions in profit from feeding kids psychotropic drugs have in this bogus "dialouge"?

    President Obama Visits Chicago –
4 People Shot 2.5 Hours After He Leaves

    February 16, 2013 10:06 pm

Apparently criminals in President Obama's hometown of Chicago aren't listening to his clamoring for less gun violence. In an embarrassing reminder to the President how ineffective speeches and endless campaigning is, a mere two and a half hours after Obama left his hometown of Chicago while on a visit there to speak on the culture of gun violence and economic decay, 4 people were shot with one tragically dying.

The President had finished a speech at Hyde Park Academy on the South Side of Chicago, where he mourned the killing of Hadiya Pendleton, the teen who visited Washington for his inauguration just a week before she was gunned down not far from the school and only one mile from Mr Obama's own home. Only 90 minutes after he left Hyde Park Academy to fly back to Washington on Air Force One the shooting started and the 4 people were shot while one was killed.

Chicago continues to have some of the most prevalent gun violence in the nation despite having some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation as well. Unfortunately, liberals have such an amazingly hard time figuring out that maybe it isn't the guns that are the problem.

Read more about the President's visit to Chicago and the shootings from Politico below: http://www.politico.com/politico44/2...it-157193.html

Four people were wounded on the streets of Chicago's South and West sides between 5:55 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. Friday, the Chicago Tribune reported. The president was airborne shortly after 5 p.m.

An hour earlier, Obama wrapped up a personal speech at Hyde Park Academy on the South Side, where he mourned the killing of Hadiya Pendleton, the teen who visited Washington for his inauguration just a week before she was gunned down not far from the school. “This is not just a gun issue. It’s also an issue of the kinds of communities that we’re building, and for that we all share a responsibility as citizens to fix it,” he said.

Obama had said little about Chicago's murder problem -- there were more than 500 in 2012 -- before Friday, instead focusing on mass shootings in his post-Newtown gun control push. But at a high school just two miles away from his Chicago home, he acknowledged the depths of devastation that street violence generated in the city.

“Last year, there were 443 murders with a firearm in this city, and 65 of them were 18 and under. That’s the equivalent of a Newtown every four months,” he said. “That’s precisely why the overwhelming majority of Americans are asking for some common sense proposals to make it harder for criminals to get their hands on a gun.”
Common sense proposals Mr President? Really! There are a lot more restrictive gun laws than so-called common sense proposals in the city of Chicago and it is one of the most crime ridden cities in America. It doesn't sound like the President's foolish ideas are working, does it?

    http://www.isthatbaloney.com/preside...ter-he-leaves/

Apparently our costly "War Against Drugs" has failed. The result of a President and Attorney General not enforcing our laws pertaining to the Southern Border has resulted in an invasion of drug cartel members showing up on the streets of Chicago. To take over the existing areas of Chicago under the imagined ownership of various street gangs they shoot these gang-bangers to settle the turf ownership issues. The political fix regarding all of this is to restrict law abiding citizens from being able to own guns and attacking the 2nd Amendment in the process. Obama shows up and flaps his mouth expounding no words of value and purporting a means to prevent these daily murders that won't work. This violence will correct itself when one side eliminates the rival street gangs and they have complete control to ply their drug trade free from competition.

If You Don’t Think They Want Your Guns,
Just Read Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Proposed Legislation

If you don't think the anti-gun nuts in our government want to take away your guns, just have a look at the proposed legislation by Senator Dianne Feinstein below. This is the summary directly from Feinstein's website. http://www.feinstein.senate.gov/publ...ssault-weapons What is scary about this kind of ridiculous legislation is that while politicians will pat themselves on the back and congratulate themselves if it passes, making them think they've actually done something, very little will actually stem the violence in our schools and society.

Anti-gun politicians like Feinstein think their arbitrary inclusion of certain characteristics actually constitute a "military style" weapon, therefore there is come kind of danger to society if these guns are sold to the public. But when you consider that a simple pistol grip on a rifle, or a flash suppressor, or a bayonet mount, or a telescoping stock amongst a few other characteristics makes an assault weapon in the eyes of those that hate the second amendment, you can see that we really are in danger of losing our right to bear arms as guaranteed in the Constitution.

If you read below the summary of Feinstein's proposed assault weapons ban, you begin to realize how dangerous this really is. It states right in the first part that it will "Ban the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of:...certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one or more military characteristics." That means if you have a hand gun that that accepts a detachable magazine and has one other military characteristic, it is an assault weapon and it will be illegal to own under this proposed law.

Does anyone still want to insist no one is coming for your guns?

The following is a summary of the Senator Dianne Feinstein 2013 legislation:

    ■ Bans the sale, transfer, importation, or manufacturing of:

    ■ 120 specifically-named firearms;

    ■ Certain other semiautomatic rifles, handguns, shotguns that can accept a detachable magazine and have one or more military characteristics; and

    ■ Semiautomatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can accept more than 10 rounds.
    ■ Strengthens the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and various state bans by:

    ■ Moving from a 2-characteristic test to a 1-characteristic test;

    ■ Eliminating the easy-to-remove bayonet mounts and flash suppressors from the characteristics test; and

    ■ Banning firearms with “thumbhole stocks” and “bullet buttons” to address attempts to “work around” prior bans.
    ■ Bans large-capacity ammunition feeding devices capable of accepting more than 10 rounds.
    ■ Protects legitimate hunters and the rights of existing gun owners by:

    ■ Grandfathering weapons legally possessed on the date of enactment;

    ■ Exempting over 900 specifically-named weapons used for hunting or sporting purposes; and

    ■ Exempting antique, manually-operated, and permanently disabled weapons.
    ■ Requires that grandfathered weapons be registered under the National Firearms Act, to include:
    ■ Background check of owner and any transferee;

    ■ Type and serial number of the firearm;

    ■ Positive identification, including photograph and fingerprint;

    ■ Certification from local law enforcement of identity and that possession would not violate State or local law; and

    ■ Dedicated funding for ATF to implement registration.

Very interesting to remember these incidents. Most are never mentioned in the news or given only passing coverage. Remember these, in light of all of today’s news concerning the President and guns. Just one more reminder…

    Did you know?.....

    • A 1997 high school shooting in Pearl , Miss. was halted by the school's vice principal after he retrieved the Colt .45 he kept in his truck.

    • At the recent mall shooting in Portland , Ore. the gunman took his own life minutes
after being confronted by a shopper carrying a concealed weapon.

2500 times last year alone legal gun owners stopped violent crime when confronted with it
long before any police assistance ... Of course, you probably didn't know any of this
because the mainstream media doesn't find it worth reporting. It's not sensational enough and doesn't fit their agenda. What's insane is people who think removing rights from responsible people will somehow keep them safe.
