I was fortunate enough to be in the pool of news photographers who accompanied the president on his tour of the devastation along the Jersey Shore, and among those who got to photograph [Donna] Vanzant’s presidential encounter.

I returned to Brigantine last week to see how she was doing.

Vanzant has been moved by the many kindnesses she received from friends, family and customers. She heard from countless people after the photograph of her hug with the president was published, including from strangers as far away as Vietnam who wished her well.

She said she was honored to meet Obama, but she is also frustrated that she has yet to receive help from either her insurance companies or the government. “The president told me I would get immediate help,” she said. “Looking back on it, it wasted a lot of people’s time,” she said of the visit.

It’s getting so you can’t take a politician who shows up at the site of a natural disaster and makes promises shortly before a national election completely at his word anymore. In spite of what Ms. Vanzant might think, the president’s visit certainly wasn’t a “waste of people’s time” from the perspective of Team Obama. http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/Ken...o-election-day

Sen. Harry Reid told the Senate floor on Friday that Hurricane Katrina was “nothing in comparison” to Hurricane Sandy.

“The people of New Orleans, in that area, they were hurt,” said Reid, the Democratic majority leader. “But nothing in comparison to what happened to the people in New England.”

Hurricane Sandy was a hurricane that devastated portions of the Caribbean and the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States during late October 2012, with lesser impacts in the Southeastern and Midwestern states and Eastern Canada. Sandy, classified as the eighteenth named storm and tenth hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, was a Category 2 storm at its peak intensity. Death toll

The death toll from Sandy as of Nov. 1 was at least 149. The confirmed deaths include 42 in New York; 12 in New Jersey; nine in Maryland; six in Pennsylvania; five in West Virginia; four in Connecticut; two in Virginia; and one in North Carolina. One person died in Canada, and at least 67 people were killed in the Caribbean, including 54 in Haiti.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest hurricanes ever to hit the United States. An estimated 1,836 people died in the hurricane and the flooding that followed in late August 2005, and millions of others were left homeless along the Gulf Coast and in New Orleans, which experienced the highest death toll.

Officials at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have said Katrina was the most destructive storm to strike the United States. It ranks sixth overall in strength of recorded Atlantic hurricanes. It was also a very large storm; at its peak, maximum winds stretched 25 to 30 nautical miles and its extremely wide swath of hurricane force winds extended at least 75 nautical miles to the east from the center.

One of the things that irritate the people down here is that the strom didn't JUST effect New Orleans - areas in Mississippi & Alabama were devestated as well. I have family in Waveland that JUST THIS DECEMBER are FINALLY able to move back into their home. It was a brick residence several blocks from the beach - it was moved 1/2 mile from it's foundation and sat in water fro weeks before they even approached.

First lady to put child victims of Hurricane Sandy to work

The White House announced Thursday that first lady Michelle Obama will be welcome the child victims of Hurricane Sandy to the White House Kitchen Garden and put them to work harvesting the summer crop.

According to a White House press announcement, the children affected by Hurricane Sandy from two New Jersey communities will be joining children from across the country who helped plant the garden in April assist with the harvest.

The students who planted the crops and are returning to pick them hail from Massachusetts, Tennessee, Vermont andWashington, DC.


“Mrs. Obama planted a vegetable garden on the South Lawn to initiate a national conversation around the health and wellbeing [sic] of our nation – a conversation that evolved into her Let’s Move! initiative to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation,” the press announcement reads.

The children will join the first lady to harvest the crops on Tuesday afternoon. The children affected by Hurricane Sandy are coming from Union Beach Memorial School in Union Beach, N.J., and Long Beach Island Grade School in Ship Bottom, N.J.

Union Beach Memorial School – Union Beach, NJ

The students of Union Beach Memorial School were displaced by Hurricane Sandy and currently attend school in other locations while their school is repaired. Through the displacement, Union Beach school district is focused on keeping their students healthy. The school district is providing all its displaced students with a free lunch through the National School Lunch Program until they return to Memorial School, and in March, 8th grade students from the school joined New Jersey and USDA officials to celebrate National Nutrition Month. Recently, volunteers planted herb and vegetable beds at Memorial School for the students to utilize upon their return to the school.


Long Beach Island Grade School – Ship Bottom, NJ

Since Hurricane Sandy, all of the LBI Grade School students (grades 3-6) have been attending their sister school, the Ethel A. Jacobsen Elementary School, which is PreK-2. They are awaiting their modular classroom units due to storm damage to their school. Despite the displacement, the school was recognized with the HealthierUS School Challenge award in March of 2013. The school uses MyPlate to teach kids about healthy eating, and they provide ideas for healthy classroom snacking while partaking in their home-grown crops at the EJ School. The district will also be receiving an award from the USDA officials in June 2013.
