DNC Chair: Superdelegates Exist to Protect Party Leaders from Grassroots Competition

Democratic National Committee chair and Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said on Thursday that superdelegates "exist really to make sure that party leaders and elected officials don’t have to be in a position where they are running against grassroots activists."

    By Barry Donegan - Feb 12, 2016

Democratic National Committee chair and Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz explained the motive behind the Democratic Party’s appointment of unpledged delegates, also called “superdelegates,” who are former party leaders and elected officials who are allowed to ignore the outcome of primary elections’ popular vote totals and instead vote for the presidential candidate of their personal choice at the party’s nominating convention.

CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Wasserman Schultz on Thursday,
“Hillary Clinton lost to Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire by 22 percentage points, the biggest victory in a contested Democratic primary there since John F. Kennedy, but it looks as though Clinton and Sanders are leaving the Granite State with the same number of delegates in their pockets because Clinton has the support of New Hampshire’s superdelegates, these party insiders. What do you tell voters who are new to the process who says[sic] this makes them feel like it’s all rigged?”
    Wasserman Schultz replied,
“Well, let me just make sure that I can clarify exactly what was available during the primaries in Iowa and in New Hampshire. The unpledged delegates are a separate category. The only thing available on the ballot in a primary and a caucus is the pledged delegates— those that are tied to the candidate that they are pledged to support, and they receive a proportional number of delegates going into our convention.”
    She added,
“Unpledged delegates exist really to make sure that party leaders and elected officials don’t have to be in a position where they are running against grassroots activists. We are as a Democratic Party really highlight and emphasize inclusiveness and diversity at our convention, and so we want to give every opportunity to grassroots activists and diverse, committed Democrats to be able to participate, attend, and be a delegate at the convention. And so we separate out those unpledged delegates to make sure that there isn’t competition between them.”
Tapper responded, “I’m not sure that that answer would satisfy an anxious young voter, but let’s move on.”

Responding to Wasserman Schultz’s comments, Hot Air’s Jazz Shaw voiced concerns that the superdelegate system seems to be disenfranchising Sen. Sanders’ voters and asked, “There were a total of 151,584 votes cast for Bernie Sanders, giving him 15 delegates. That means that 10,105 people had to drag themselves out in the snow for each delegate he received. Why should voters have any faith in a system where one person appointed by the party leadership can cancel out the votes of more than ten thousand people who chose the other candidate?”

How is that a democratic process? They are taking a giant dump on the voters. The electoral college is weird enough without adding this. I am so disappointed with the "democratic" party. It's just a private club.

    ..

So basically we don't have a democracy, only an illusion of one. Wow. She just came out and said it out loud. "We have a system in place to ensure that grass roots candidats have a voice, but not a vote". And the Democrats criticize the Republicans for gerrymandering. Two sides of the same corrupt coin.

    ..

Joseph Stalin said the person who votes has no power; the ones who count the votes have the power. DWS and the DNC are the ones who count the votes, and they are the ones who are destroying democracy. They ought to be very careful, because even if Hillary steals the nomination, she can't win if Bernie's supporters don't vote for her. And with tactics like this, a lot of them won't.

    ..

This is a way to take the popular vote away from the people. We should sue the DNC ourselves.

    ..

So... this is basically a way to prevent people from uprising and voting for ''someone else''.

    ..

This will be a starting point for the revolution.

    ..

Since Bernie's campaign is basically a "grassroots" effort, didn't she really just say that those delegates are there to ensure Hillary wins the primary?

    ..

You are finally finding out just how corrupt the Clintons and the DNC are. Hillary's nomination was bought and paid for a long time ago. Little Debbie was promised an ambassadorship if she could cheat Hillary all the way into the White House. Sorry, Bernie, little Debbie and the DNC will never let you win. The fix has been in for Hillary all along.

While Hilary Clinton may still be basking in the glory of her huge win over Bernie Sanders last night in South Carolina, this morning’s news might be a bit of a buzzkill.

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Debbie Wasserman Schulz can’t be happy about this, either.

Little Debbie’s vice chair of the DNC, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, stunned many this morning by announcing she will resign her DNC post so that she can endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders for president. Wouldn’t you have loved to see DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schulz’s face when she found out?

    Via NBC News: http://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-pres...wn-dnc-n527481

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders in his bid to become President of the United States this morning on “Meet the Press.” She also resigned as Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee. Just last month, she said she couldn’t take sides due to her position with the DNC.

Gabbard specifically pointed to Sanders’ position on military intervention as part of her endorsement reasoning.

“As a veteran, as a soldier, I’ve seen firsthand the true cost of war. … As we look at our choices as to who our next Commander-in-chief will be is to recognize the necessity to have a Commander-in-chief who has foresight. Who exercises good judgment. Who looks beyond the consequences — who looks at the consequences of the actions that they are willing to take before they take those actions. So that we don’t continue to find ourselves in these failures that have resulted in chaos in the Middle East and so much loss of life,” Gabbard said.
You may recall Rep. Gabbard was a strong voice against DNC Chair Debbie Wassmerman-Schulz’s Democrat debate schedule, which many believe was designed to favor Hillary Clinton — who is widely known as the favorite of the Democrat establishment in general and Debbie Wasserman Schulz in particular.

Apparently, the GOP isn’t the only party that has some widening cracks developing.
