New Dem (state) Rep arrested for second time in two weeks
posted at 3:46 pm on December 5, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Perhaps no one is as prepared for a political career as Rep. Christina Ayala (D-CT). She just won her first term, and already she’s telling law enforcement that she’s too important to have to deal with them. Ayala may also have to plea bargain … twice: http://www.greenwichtime.com/news/ar...ht-4089811.php

    [IMG][/IMG]

Newly elected state Rep. Christina Ayala tried to talk police out of arresting her on domestic violence charges Monday night after she slapped her boyfriend for cheating on her.

“She said that she did not want us involved because of who she was,” the police report states. Ayala and her boyfriend, Pedro Rodriguez-Ortiz, were charged with breach of peace.

Just two weeks ago, Ayala got hauled into court over unrelated charges:
State Rep. Ayala is no stranger to the courthouse. Just two weeks ago she was there to face charges of evading responsibility, failure to obey a traffic signal and failure to renew her vehicle’s registration in connection with a hit-and-run crash in August.

When she appeared before Superior Court Judge Earl Richards on the most recent charge, she stood chewing gum as the judge reviewed the litany of things she can no longer do under a protective order he was imposing on her.

By the way, Ayala also may have lied about her residency in the district during the election:
The arrest also raised questions about whether Ayala, a Democrat who was overwhelmingly elected to the 128th District seat, actually lives in her district. The 49 Hillside Avenue address where the incident occurred is not located in the 128th House district, but in the 129th district. …

During the campaign, Ayala said she lived on Noble Avenue in the city’s East Side. She is registered to vote under that address; but public records show the utilities at the Hillside Avenue address were connected under Ayala’s name in October 2011. She also has a cellphone registered using that address.

She doesn’t seem to have any bills listed under the Noble Avenue address. State law dictates that any candidate who wins an election must move into the district within three months.
The best part? Her mother is the registrar of voters. This may be the worst start ever for a political career. Hopefully, it will be a short career, too.

Update: Ayala didn’t win a Congressional race, she won a seat in the state legislature. I’ve corrected my perfectly understandable error above …

(RNN) – A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner said he received a letter of resignation from Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., D-IL, on Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The spokesman would not comment further.

Jackson, 47, has been in and out of the Mayo Clinic since June, receiving treatment for bipolar disorder and gastrointestinal issues. He returned to his Washington home in September only to return in October. He left the clinic a second time in November, the AP reported.

Jackson won re-election to his House seat Nov. 6, despite little communication with his constituency except for a robocall asking for their patience.
A special election will be held to fill Jackson's seat. The election must be held within 115 days after the seat is vacated, according to Illinois law.
The House Ethics Committee has been investigating whether Jackson was involved in the Rod Blagojevich scandal in 2008, following the accusations the governor tried to sell President Barack Obama's former seat in the Senate. Jackson denied any wrongdoing, but police investigators claimed one of his former campaign fundraisers offered to raise $1.5 million for Blagojevich in return for Jackson's Senate appointment.

Jackson, the son of famed civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, has served Illinois' 2nd district in the House since 1995. He won the seat in a special election.

Prior to joining Congress, Jackson took part in his father's presidential campaigns and worked in the offices of the Rainbow Coalition.

Jesse Jackson Jr. resigns from Congress
    By Doug Powers • November 21, 2012 02:59 PM

Are you ready for the “Chicago politician resigns amid corruption investigation” story for the century decade year month week?

The Chicago Tribune reported earlier today that Jesse Jackson Jr. was expected to submit his resignation to House Speaker Boehner, and the AP confirms that has happened: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...,3302727.story

No word yet on whether or not Jackson will receive disability benefits from now on, http://www.myfoxchicago.com/story/20...-pay-exclusive as was reportedly part of his plea deal for stepping down. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-34222_16...on-jr-resigns/ Jail time is also a good possibility. The investigation is ongoing: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-34222_16...on-jr-resigns/

Jackson’s resignation will trigger a special election: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...gress/1719963/

Too bad Blago is still in the tank, because he could probably sell that seat in fairly short order. http://www.time.com/time/magazine/ar...865954,00.html

Jesse Jackson Jr. had some ... cash flow ... problems
posted at 11:31 am on February 16, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

It seems like I can still remember back when Jesse Jackson Jr. disappeared for long stretches of time to seek treatment for debilitating health issues, becoming a sympathetic figure on the Left. Ah, good times, good times. Ed brought us up to date a couple of weeks ago http://hotair.com/archives/2013/02/0...ant-jail-time/ after it became obvious that there was quite a bit more to the story and that Jackson was heading for some serious legal problems. Well, now the tale is just about fully written and the details may come as a shock even to those who suspected the worst. The former congressman and his wife were dipping into the cash contributed by their supporters at a hefty pace, funding a lifestyle which was “way beyond their means” and the expected penalty is going to be high. http://www.politico.com/story/2013/0...ges-87716.html

Former Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) will plead guilty to conspiring with his wife to illegally spend $750,000 in campaign funds on personal expenses, including a $43,000 Rolex watch, fur coats and memorabilia associated with Michael Jackson, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Bruce Lee, according to information obtained by POLITICO.

The charges against him include conspiracy, making false statements, and mail and wire fraud…

Prosecutors will recommend a prison sentence of between 46 months and 57 months for Jackson Jr., as well as a fine of $10,000 to $100,000, and forfeiture of a yet-to-be-determined portion of the misspent $750,000 in campaign funds.
I’m not sure if Jackson really is suffering from some sort of mental illness or it was all a dodge to put up a smoke screen around an investigation that he knew was closing in on him. But either way, this isn’t going to turn into one of those cases of money getting lost in transfer or a misunderstanding of the campaign finance laws and what constitutes legitimate campaign expenditures. The details being released by the prosecutors are pretty graphic.

In one instance there was a completely bogus charge for “billboard expenses” transferred to his wife’s business and then almost immediately moved to their personal account to pay down credit card charges. Others ranged from, “airplane tickets, booze and cigars to groceries.” It would be difficult to argue that anyone seriously thought those were legal expenditures for a political campaign unless your campaign manager was Billy Carter.

But if there’s any plus side to all of this, the people of his district have probably learned a valuable lesson, and will quickly move to elect a fiscally conservative Republican with a sold background in financial management who will ….

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Sorry… almost injured myself laughing there.

wait a minute ... lets look at the math ... STEAL $750,000 in campaign funds ... FINED $10,000 to $100,000, and forfeiture of a yet-to-be-determined portion of the misspent $$$ Who says crime doesn't pay ??

    ...

In just the last decade Chicago has given Illinois two ex-governors who ended up in federal prison, the last two governors. And now a US Congressman and probably his wife.

Chicago has also given us Dear Leader.

The ones who were caught were the stupid ones and/or the ones who PO’d too many others and got hung out to dry. Blago wasn’t too bright and neither was Junior. The sheer audacity they exhibited, assuming they could get away with it, tells you all you to know about how politicians operate in Chicago, in Illinois, and now almost certainly in the WH.

    ..

Those two thieves were pulling in way above $300k with their salaries, too.

Jackson Jr plea deal will include “significant jail time”
posted at 8:41 am on February 7, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Isn’t this becoming a tradition in Illinois politics? A couple of the state’s recent governors went from the big mansion to the Big House, too, and so did Jesse Jackson Jr’s predecessor in his House seat, Mel Reynolds. http://hotair.com/archives/2012/11/2...ld-house-seat/ Jackson will follow in that tradition, according to a new report from the Chicago Sun-Times’s Michael Sneed http://www.suntimes.com/18059047-761...urce-says.html about the structure of his plea deal on corruption charges (via the Daily Caller): http://dailycaller.com/2013/02/06/re...ant-jail-time/

Sneed has learned a plea deal is now on the table between former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and federal authorities probing allegations of campaign fund misuse.

Sneed is told the plea deal includes Jackson serving time in federal prison.

“Significant jail time is now definitely a part of the deal,” said a top Sneed source close to the probe.

Yes, Sneed writes about herself in the third person. Bear with it for a bit longer, because the story gets better. The federal investigation into Jackson started off by looking at both him and his wife Sandi. Now, however, the investigation of Sandi Jackson has spun off into its own probe, and Sandi Jackson believes that Jesse sold her out, according to Sneed:

“But I think [Jackson’s wife] Sandi, feels like she was thrown under the bus by her husband, ” now that a separate probe has begun on her, a second source added.

Sandi Jackson claims she was stunned by campaign finance abuse disclosures against her husband, who has been treated for mental disorders and allegedly spent $40,000 on a Rolex watch purchased with campaign funds.
Mrs. Jackson was a Chicago alderman until last month, and also a paid consultant to her husband’s campaign — to the tune of $50,000 a month, which only ended well after the election. According to the Sun-Times report, investigators haven’t yet decided whether to charge Sandi Jackson, but they’re taking a long look at her involvement in her husband’s alleged corruption.

It’s possible that investigators opened the probe against Jackson’s wife to put more pressure on him to accept prison time as part of the deal, too. That would certainly make sense, especially after the public-relations effort put into painting Jackson as a victim of mental illness, which may still be true, of course. The machinations appear to be coming to an end soon, though, and we’ll soon find out whether Jackson threw his wife under the bus or whether he’s going to rescue her from it.

Update: Michael Sneed is a woman; I’ve corrected a pronoun above for proper reference. Thanks to David K for the correction. (And also Tom V, whose e-mail came immediately afterward.)

The prosecutors must have found it surprising, having opened a Sandi investigation for the purpose of putting “pressure” on Jackson, that, instead, Jackson got enthused by the idea and started helping to put her away. How do we score this one on our “Democrat Corruption home game”?

    ...

The cons t itu ents will say: “They all do it,” and excuse this bad behavior. They have been taught to say that, and they believe that others are just getting away with it … a kind of para noia, really. Just like they are told that wea lthy white people all stole their money.

    ...

Paid his wife a $60,000 a year “consu ltant” salary with campaign funds, while he bought himself a $40,000 watch with campaign funds.

Hope the wife likes bus exhaust fumes. She’s definitely going under.

    ...

A Sun-Times story earlier this week (about Sandi and the investigation starting to focus on her) mentioned that investigators DO take into consideration that this would be a husb and and wife, and jail time for parents would be difficult.

A letter-writer in yesterday’s paper was un sympat hetic. As am I. Don’t want to do the time, don’t do the crime, as the saying goes.

And Michael Sneed drives me up the wall. She is so very full of herself.

I hope both go to jail. It would be a sentence richly deserved.

    ..

Hey! Name one other state where your license plate is actually made by your former governor! It’s that kind of personal touch that really resonates with the folks in the “Land of Lin coln.”

    ..

    ...

ONE (1 each): Number of state treasurers, attorneys general and Chicago patronage chiefs EACH convicted of corruption since 1980.

TWO (2): The number of Congressmen convicted and imprisoned since 1972 – Rostenkowski and Reynolds.

FOUR (4): The number of Illinois governors since 1960 that went to the Big House – Blago, Ryan, Walker, and Kerner.

FIFTEEN (15): The number of Illinois state legislators that have been convicted and imprisoned since 1972.

NINETEEN (19): The number of Cook County judges convicted of corruption since 1972.

TWENTY PERCENT (20%): Percentage of elected Chicago aldermen convicted of crimes since 1970.

TWENTY (20): Number of suburban Chicago mayors and village presidents convicted of corruption since 1972.

THIRTY-ONE (31): Number of Chicago aldermen convicted of corruption since 1976.

SIXTY-ONE (61): Number of corruption scandals in Chicago and its suburbs since the 1970s.

SEVENTY-NINE (79): Number of then-current or former Illinois, Chicago or Cook County elected officials that were found guilty of a crime by judges, juries or their own pleas between 1972 and 2006.

ONE HUNDRED THIRTY (130): Number of elected officials from the suburbs of Chicago convicted of corruption since 1980.

ONE HUNDRED FIFTY (150): Number of TOP Cook County officials that have been convicted in the last 140 years.

TWO HUNDRED FIFTY (250): If the number of Chicago alderman sentenced to prison since 1972 was extrapolated to the US House, it would be as if roughly 250 congressman had gone to jail in the same period.

THREE HUNDRED (300): Number of Chicago police officers convicted of corruption, including gang protection, since the 1960s.

FOUR HUNDRED SIXTY-NINE (469): Number of politicians from the federal district of Northern Illinois that were found guilty of corruption between 1995 and 2004.

FIFTEEN HUNDRED THIRTY-ONE (1,531): Number of federal convictions of public officials and businessmen in Cook County for corruption or corruption-related crimes since 1976.

EIGHTEEN HUNDRED TWENTY-EIGHT (1,828): Number of total convictions of Illinois politicians for corruption since 1972.

And they wonder why there is so much crime and violence in Chicago…

Jackson Jr. tells court he can't pay $750K fine
    Catalina Camia , USA TODAY 2:50 p.m. EDT June 18, 2013

Former congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has no money to pay a $750,000 fine and wants to serve his prison time first if he and his wife both go to jail, according to court documents.

Jackson, a one-time rising Democratic Party star from Illinois, admitted last year to using $750,000 in campaign money to buy groceries and pay for luxury items, including a gold-plated men's Rolex watch and memorabilia that once belonged to Michael Jackson and Martin Luther King Jr.

Federal prosecutors earlier this month recommended a four-year prison term for Jackson and 18 months in jail for Sandi Jackson, who pleaded guilty to falsifying the couple's tax returns over a six-year period. The government also wants Jackson to repay his campaign the amount used for personal purposes.

Jackson and his wife, a former Chicago alderman, are scheduled to be sentenced in early July. They have two children.

"Mr. Jackson has no ability to pay a fine," his attorneys told the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, in documents filed Monday.

A report for the federal court determined Jackson and his wife "have a negative monthly cash flow" with a net worth that is less than $750,000. The couple have equity in their Chicago and Washington, D.C., houses, two retirement accounts and their cars.

Because of the family's financial situation, Jackson's attorneys asked the court for the former congressman to serve his prison time first. The court filings say Jackson, who was treated at the Mayo Clinic last year for bipolar disorder, is unable to work. "Mr. Jackson's health issues preclude him from working at this time," his attorneys wrote. "If he serves his period of incarceration first, Mrs. Jackson would be able to work and could stabilize the family's finances. By the time Mr. Jackson completes his sentence, the family would not be in the significant financial period it is in today."

Jackson, 48, was first elected to Congress in 1995. He resigned from Illinois' 2nd Congressional District seat in November, shortly after winning re-election. Jackson was on medical leave from the House last summer when acknowledged that he had been seeking treatment for bipolar disorder.

Jackson's father, Jesse Jackson Sr., is the noted civil rights leader.

Jesse Jackson Jr.: 30-month Sentence For Misuse of Campaign Funds
Wednesday, 14 Aug 2013 05:24 PM ~ By Ken Mandel

Former fast-rising Illinois congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. received a 30-month jail sentence Wednesday for stealing $750,000 in campaign funds to finance a lavish lifestyle. Jackson, the 48-year-old son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, had been a Democratic congressman from Illinois from 1995 until he resigned in November. He will be subjected to three years of supervised release after his time is served, Reuters reported.

Jackson and his wife, Sandi Jackson, used campaign funds as a "personal piggy bank," U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson — no relation to the family — told him, according to USA Today. "There may be gray areas in campaign finance. This case didn't come near to those areas. As a public official, you are supposed to live up to a higher standard of ethics and integrity."

Jackson used the money to pay for living expenses, vacations, and other luxury items.

For her part, Sandi Jackson was sentenced to one year in jail and another year of supervised release. She admitted to falsifying tax returns over a six-year period, and leaving out $600,000 in income. She also used the campaign's credit card to pay for $171,000 in personal goods, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves, USA Today reported.

Both Jacksons begged for a lighter sentence, asking the court to consider the effect a prison term would have on their two children, ages 13 and 9. But the judge admonished the Jacksons. "It is not the court that put your children in this position," Judge Jackson said to Sandi Jackson, according to USA Today.

Still, the Jacksons won't serve at the same time, allowing one parent to stay home with the children. Jesse Jr. will serve his sentence first, beginning in November. Sandi's sentence will start one month after her husband is released.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, the civil rights leader and former presidential candidate, attended the hearing for his son, who pleaded guilty in February to misusing campaign funds. Prosecutors had originally sought a four-year sentence.

Among the items the younger Jackson bought was a $43,350 gold-plated Rolex watch. He also spent $5,687 for a "holistic retreat" in Martha's Vineyard and more than $5,000 on capes and fur parkas, according to court filings.

During his time in Congress, Jackson worked on issues related to health care and education for the poor. His reputation has taken major hits in recent years amid revelations of an extramarital affair, and allegations that he was been involved in the plot to buy Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat after Obama left for the White House.

In the summer of 2012, Jackson took a medical leave and was treated for bipolar disorder. He was re-elected for a ninth time in November, but resigned two weeks later, citing health concerns and the pending federal investigation.

... Jackson worked on issues related to health care and education for the poor.
BS. If he was so interested in helping the poor - wouldn't that $750,000 been better spent then on jewelry, furs, vacations and such for himself & his family ??

Feds send Jesse Jackson Jr. $750,000 forfeiture order
    By Phil Rogers, NBCChicago.com

Imagine getting a bill for $750,000 from the federal government. Former Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. got one Thursday, in the form of a forfeiture order from the United States District Court, stemming from the criminal conviction for which he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison last week.

Not only must Jackson come up with $750,000 in cash, which he told the court last week he will be paying in full, but he also must part with dozens of items, some of them almost comical in nature, which prosecutors said were purchased with his ill-gotten gains.

That means more than $10,000 worth of Bruce Lee memorabilia must be turned over immediately to the federal government, along with a $5,000 football signed by American presidents. He will have to fork over Martin Luther King memorabilia valued at more than $15,000, as well as more than $18,000 in Michael Jackson souvenirs (including two of the King of Pop’s famous hats). There’s a $4,000 guitar signed by Michael Jackson and Eddie Van Halen, Jim Hendrix memorabilia valued at $2,775, and Malcolm X souvenirs priced at $2,200. Also furs, valued at $5,000.

According to the US Attorney’s office in Washington, Jackson has turned over 13 items so far, including nine items of Bruce Lee and Michael Jackson memorabilia, a mink cashmere cape, a mink reversible parka, a black and red cashmere cape, and a black fox reversible jacket.

He has indicated he hopes to satisfy the money judgment in total by the time he begins serving his prison sentence.

As for what happens to the things Jackson turns over, they go to the US Marshal’s service, which typically holds periodic auctions of ill-gotten property.

Information about the U.S. Marshals Service’s auctions of forfeited items can be found at http://www.usmarshals.gov/assets/sales.htm.

Spends 750,000 in campaign funds, a federal crime, is now filing for disability so YOU can pay him well each month for serving a light prison sentence; Jessie Jackson Jr. eligible to receive $8,700 dollars per month in Disability pay while in prison; while our veterans are given more and more grief trying to get the assistance they need.

BS. If he was so interested in helping the poor - wouldn't that $750,000 been better spent then on jewelry, furs, vacations and such for himself & his family ??

....Sandi Jackson was sentenced to one year in jail and another year of supervised release. [U][I][B]She admitted to falsifying tax returns over a six-year period, and leaving out $600,000 in income...

Convict Jackson Jr. gets $8.7k a month disability for “mood disorder.” I should be so crazy.
Written by Allen West on May 2, 2014

Whenever you hear our dear politicians in Washington DC say there’s nothing more to cut or that they’re just like us, let me give you a friendly reminder. As Breitbart reported after his jail sentencing, convicted ex-congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) receives $8,700 per month in government disability pay, as well as a partial federal pension of $45,000. http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Governm...-Jr-disability

That generous $8,700 in disability comes thanks to Jackson’s sudden development of a “mood disorder” as the federal government began looking to indict him. Jackson, who was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison, had no history of mental illness during his prior 17 years in Congress.

And I wouldn’t be surprised if Jackson Jr. eventually gets a pardon from his Chicago buddy, Barack Hussein Obama.

I firmly believe the Congressional pension program needs to be reformed, right along with instituting term limits for Members of the US House and Senate. A political elitism is being created that does not bode well for the American interest because it only serves self and special interest.

As I flew out to San Diego for Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America, my prayer on National Prayer Day is that Americans wake up and realize there is more to life than “Dancing with the Stars” and Donald Sterling-type distractions.

If we continue down the path of the welfare nanny-state and dependency society, what shall we pass on to subsequent generations? Think my fellow Americans, start to think.
