AMBER ALERT : Tennessee Mom, 3 Daughters Missing

Tennessee Missing Mom And 3 Daughters May Be In 'Extreme Danger,' Police Say
ALYSSA NEWCOMB (@alyssanewcomb) and ASHLEY JENNINGS May 5, 2012

Mississippi police have issued an Amber Alert after new details have led them to determine a missing Tennessee mother and her three daughters were abducted and could be in extreme danger.

Jo Ann Bain and her daughters Adrienne, 14; Alexandria, 12; and Kyliyah, 8; have been missing since April 27. They were last seen leaving their home in Whiteville, which is located between Jackson and Memphis, on the morning of their disappearance.

Police said they have reason to believe the missing mother and her three daughters are with Adam Christopher Mayes, 35, of Guntown, Miss.

Mayes, who was questioned by Hardeman County Police on Sunday, is believed to have cut his hair. Authorities said he may have also cut and dyed the hair of the three children to alter their apperances.

Authorities said they will issue kidnap warrants for Mayes, who is considered armed and dangerous.

Earlier this week, investigators issued their first warrant for Mayes, charging him with filing a false report based on statements he made to investigators about the Bain family. Mayes then disappeared. "We believe he has information on the whereabouts of this family," Hardeman County, Tenn., Sheriff John Doolan said at a news conference Wednesday.

Bain's Dodge Durango was found abandoned on a county road less than three miles from their home on Sunday. The missing mom and her husband Gary were just days away from moving the family to Arizona when she and her children vanished.

The FBI is involved in the investigation since it crosses state lines, said Warren Strain, a spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.

Cops 101 : a family of three disappears - there is a problem and that is a fact.

    ..

I swear if that punk harms this family they should skip the trial and fry his ass. I hope they are returned safe and sound. Sending prayers.

    ...
Prayer has gone up for their safety and prompt return home. I wonder where they were while this guy was being questioned?

2 bodies found in MS during search for mom, girls

    http://news.yahoo.com/2-bodies-found...003149142.html

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Two bodies have been found in Mississippi during the search for a missing Tennessee woman and her three children, but the identities are not known, authorities said Saturday.

The bodies were found late Friday night or early Saturday morning in a residence associated with the man charged with abducting Jo Ann Bain and her children, FBI spokesman Joel Siskovic said.

The spokesman said authorities on the scene were not able to positively identify the bodies. He would not say if the bodies were children.

The missing girls are 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain, 12-year-old Alexandria and 14-year-old Adrienne. They were last seen April 27 in Hardeman County, Tenn. The woman's husband reported her missing and her car was found abandoned.

Adam Mayes, 35, is charged in Tennessee with abducting all four, but authorities are still trying to determine if Jo Ann Bain went with Mayes willingly. He was last seen Tuesday in Guntown, Miss. He's been described as a family friend.

The FBI and U.S. Marshals Service are offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information that leads to the location of the missing victims and the arrest of Mayes.

Siskovic said the bodies were found in a residence, but it wasn't clear if it was a house, mobile home or apartment. He also wasn't sure if the residence belonged to Mayes or an acquaintance of his. Siskovic said the bodies were found in Guntown, north of Tupelo. Lee County coroner Carolyn Green said the bodies were found outside Guntown in Union County.

Siskovic said authorities talked to Mayes early on in the investigation, but he fled when they tried to contact him again. The FBI says they were not immediately aware of Mayes having a criminal record.

Authorities had said that Mayes could be in Mississippi but that he has ties to Arizona, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert on Saturday morning, and Tennessee authorities had also issued an alert.

Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said in a news release Saturday that Mayes "is considered armed and extremely dangerous,"

Authorities described Adrienne as a white girl with brown hair and eyes. She's 5 feet 4 inches tall and 129 pounds. Alexandria has brown hair and hazel eyes and is 5 feet tall and 105 pounds. Kyliyah has blonde hair and brown eyes and is 4 feet tall and 57 pounds.

Mayes has brown hair and blue eyes and is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds.

However, authorities said Mayes may have cut his hair, as well as cut and dyed the girls' hair to disguise their identities.

Anyone with information is asked to call 601-987-1353 or 1-800-TBI-FIND.

Bodies identified as missing mother, daughter
By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

A Tennesse medical examiner identified two bodies Monday as those of Jo Ann Bain and her eldest daughter, Adrienne, 14, who are believed to have been abducted from their home in Whiteville, Tenn. on April 27. Alexandria Bain, 12, and Kyliyah Bain, 8, are believed to still be with the man police have identified as the kidnapper, Adam Mayes. The two younger girls are believed to still be with Mayes.

Jo Ann and Adrienne Bain's bodies were found behind Mayes' home near Guntown, Miss. Adam Mayes, considered "armed and extremely dangerous," is wanted in connection with the disappearance of Jo Ann Bain and her three daughters, who were abducted in Tennessee and last seen in Mississippi.

Earlier Monday, state troopers stopped vehicles at roadblocks and officers searched the yard of a home in northern Mississippi, seeking to unravel the mysterious disappearance of a Tennessee mother and her three daughters and find the family friend accused of abducting them.

Mississippi state troopers who were stopping vehicles and searching their trunks along State Route 30 near Guntown said they were conducting a manhunt for 35-year-old Adam Mayes. He's being sought in the April 27 disappearance of Jo Ann Bain and her daughters: 14-year-old Adrienne, 12-year-old Alexandria and 8-year-old Kyliyah.

Officers also searched the yard of a home near Guntown that's been linked to Mayes. Mayes was last seen a week ago in Guntown, about 80 miles south of the Bain family's home in Whiteville, Tenn.

Kidnapping warrants have been issued for Mayes. The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said Saturday it believed "the children may be in extreme danger."

Jo Ann Bain and her daughters were last seen at their home outside Whiteville. Before they disappeared, the Bains had been preparing to move to Arizona.

The mother's Facebook page shows that in the days before the four disappeared she was packing and working on homework. Her last post, dated April 26, said "a good venting always makes you feel better." It didn't say why she was venting.

A web of ties connects Mayes to the missing woman and her family. They were all known around Whiteville, a town of about 4,500 people 60 miles east of Memphis. Mayes was a longtime friend of Bain's husband and had been at their home the evening before they disappeared, police said.

Both Gary Bain and Mayes were once married to sisters, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm said.

Mayes had stayed over at the Bains' house to help the family pack and load up a U-Haul to drive across the country to Arizona, Helm said. Gary Bain, who was at the house that night, awoke to find his wife, daughters and Mayes gone.

He couldn't reach his wife on her cell phone that day, and reported them missing when the girls didn't get off the school bus.

While authorities say Mayes is likely to be armed and extremely dangerous, acquaintances describe him as friendly, helpful and like an uncle to the girls.

Gerald Long, 60, of Jackson, Tenn., said he last saw Mayes about two years ago. He said Mayes lived across the street from him for about a year with his wife, Teresa. He described Mayes as a "sociable person."

He was helpful, Long said. "He didn't seem violent or anything."

As for his relationship with his wife, Long said "they were always up and down about things." Long would not elaborate.

The neighbor said he thought Mayes and his wife are no longer together.

Jo Ann Bain's aunt said she was waiting Monday for authorities to tell her that her niece and the girls are safe.

"I pray for Jo Ann and the girls to be OK and for them to come home," said Beverly Goodman, who works at Whiteville City Hall.

She said that her niece was not the type of woman to run off with someone.

Goodman expressed frustration that the authorities didn't issue an Amber Alert sooner. "What would it have hurt to put an Amber Alert out?" Goodman said. "They might have saved a couple of lives."

"Jo Ann and the kids, everyone loves them. We're just hoping to hear that they're safe," said Linda Kirkland, a family friend and cook at the Country Cafe in Whiteville, Tenn.

Kirkland said the woman and her daughters were moving to Arizona because two of the girls had asthma.

FBI spokesman Joel Siskovic said authorities talked to Mayes early on in the investigation, but he fled when they tried to contact him again.

Authorities had said over the weekend that Mayes could be in Mississippi but that he has ties to Arizona, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.

Authorities said Adrienne has brown hair and eyes. She's 5 feet 4 inches tall and 129 pounds. Alexandria has brown hair and hazel eyes and is 5 feet tall and 105 pounds. Kyliyah has blond hair and brown eyes and is 4 feet tall and 57 pounds.

Mayes has brown hair and blue eyes and is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds.

Authorities said Mayes may have cut his hair, as well as cut and dyed the girls' hair to disguise their identities.

A reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the apprehension of Mayes and location of the victims. Contact the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-824-3463.

This whole story is odd. But then again, we only get what the media wants us to get.

For the past 2 days they've been saying they found 2 bodies in that guys house......but wouldn't say who the bodies were.......but in the video interview, one of the investagators said it was the mother and a daughter...........even though they're still looking for the mother and daughters.

And if they were found in his house....why did it take so long?? The police were at his house THE DAY THEY WENT MISSING!!

The FBI spoke to him at his house in TN - the bodies were found in MS. I don't think that it is so much the MEDIA in this case as law enforcemnet is not going to give up too much information on an active case and they are hopeing ( praying ) that they can still rescue to two little girls.

I thought I read somewhere (or saw an interview), that it was his house they were found in? Does he own 2 houses??

I just hope they find him and the girls before it's too late.

Suspect's wife, mother charged in slaying of Tennessee mom, daughter
By msnbc.com staff and news services

Police have arrested the wife and mother of Adam Mayes, the man suspected of killing a Tennessee woman and her oldest daughter and kidnapping the woman's two youngest daughters, authorities said Tuesday.

NBC station WMC-TV in Memphis reported that Adam Mayes' wife, Teresa Mayes, is charged with four counts of aggravated kidnapping and his mother, Mary Francis Mayes, is charged with four counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping. They were arraigned Tuesday morning, WMC reported.

In a police affidavit, Teresa Mayes admits that she was involved in taking the Bain family from Hardeman County by driving them to Union County, Miss., WMC said.

The affidavit also said that Mary Francis Mayes knew about the crimes.

Teresa Mayes' bond is set at $500,000; Mary Mayes, $300,000, WMC reported.

Teresa Mayes' sister, Bobbi Booth, earlier told WMC that Adam Mayes and his wife lived with his parents in Alpine, Miss. Booth said her sister told her she knew about the killings, but Booth thought Teresa Mayes may have been too scared to call the police.

The bodies of Jo Ann Bain and 14-year-old Adrienne Bain were found behind a house in northern Mississippi late last week.

The FBI said it believed the other daughters — 12-year-old Alexandria and 8-year-old Kyliyah — were still with Mayes.

Word of the arrest came as the search for Mayes, 35, continued.

On April 27, Jo Ann Bain and her three daughters disappeared. Their car was found in a field not far from their Whiteville home. Her husband, Gary, reported them missing.

Timeline: How The Bain Family Went From Missing To Murdered
by Alex Coleman, updated on: 06:36pm, May 8, 2012

(Whiteville, TN) Investigators say they believe the series of events that led to the disappearance of Jo Ann Bain and her three daughters, Adrienne, Alexandria and Kyliyah began about 10 days ago.

The family left Arizona to return home to Tennessee for a funeral.

It was Friday, April 27th, when Bain’s husband, Gary, reported his wife and children missing. Their disappearance shook the small town of Whiteville where the family lived.

Linda Kirkland said, “We were just all hoping and praying that she can be found safe and all the kids and all can come back safe.”

Jo Ann Bain’s truck was discovered less than three miles from her Whiteville home on Sunday, April 29, the same day police questioned a man considered a longtime family friend named Adam Mayes, then let him go.

April 30, Mayes was caught on camera at a convenience store near where he lived. He looked very different due to a haircut.

By the following Tuesday, police say, they realized that Mayes had given them misleading information. When they went to arrest him, he had vanished.

Jimmy Edwards is the Union County, Mississippi Sheriff, “We are working around the clock 24 hours a day searching for this person. We can’t say he’s in this county, we can’t say he’s not.”

The Bain family was days away from returning to Arizona when Jo Ann Bain and her children disappeared.

Investigators say Mayes even stayed at the family’s house to help them pack and load up a U-haul to drive back to Arizona

Gary Bain, who was at the house that night, awoke to find his wife, daughters and Mayes gone.

Neighbors such as Jackie Byers were praying things would not take a turn for the worse, “I mean it’s terrible. Hopefully, they’re alive and well and there is no foul play.”

But that wouldn’t be the case. Affidavits Against Teresa & Mary Mayes showed Mayes’ wife, Teresa and his mother, Mary, may have been in on the crime. The affidavit said the two women helped confine and bring the family from Hardeman County, Tennessee to Union County, Mississippi.

The women allegedly saw Adam Mayes digging in his mother’s backyard on April 27th.

On May 4, the FBI began excavation around that house and discovered two bodies.

Monday, the Shelby county Medical Examiner confirmed the bodies were Jo Ann Bain and her 14-year-old daughter, Adrienne.

The search continues for Mayes and the two other girls.

Billy Pittman is hoping an arrest is made soon, “It’s hard to wrap your head around and it’s really scary. I wish they would hurry up and catch him so things can get back to normal.”

Regarding Adam Mayes, police said he has ties to Arizona, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. He’s considered armed and dangerous and he may be using the aliases of Christopher Wylde or Paco Rodrigass. If you see him call 1-800-824-3463.[/b]

Relative: Kidnap suspect claimed girls were his
By ADRIAN SAINZ and SHEILA BURKE | Associated Press – 2 hrs 48 mins ago

GUNTOWN, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man killed a Tennessee mother and her teenage daughter so he could abduct two young sisters who are still missing, according to court documents filed Wednesday, and a relative says the suspect thought the two younger girls might be his daughters.

The developments gave the first hint of a motive in the case that began in southwest Tennessee, stretched into Mississippi and led the FBI to put Adam Christopher Mayes, 35, on its Ten Most Wanted list. Authorities said they think the missing girls, Alexandria, 12, and Kyliyah Bain, 8, are still with Mayes, nearly two weeks after he took them.

Josie Tate, Mayes' mother-in-law, told The Associated Press that Mayes thought he might be the girls' father and it caused trouble in the marriage to her daughter, who's jailed in the case. "She was tired of him doting on those two little girls that he claimed were his," Tate said in an exclusive phone interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday. In an earlier interview, her daughter, Bobbi Booth, said Teresa Mayes suspected her husband was having an affair with Jo Ann Bain.

Authorities refused to comment on the motive for the April 27 slayings and abductions at a Wednesday news conference.

Mayes and his wife were charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the deaths of Jo Ann Bain and Adrienne Bain, 14. Their bodies were found buried outside the Mayes' home near Guntown, Miss., a week after they were reported missing by Jo Ann Bain's husband, Gary.

Adam Mayes' mother, Mary Frances Mayes, also has been charged with conspiracy to commit especially aggravated kidnapping. Her attorney, Terry Dycus, said his client maintains she is not guilty. Dycus said it was too early to discuss what her defense would be. "She agrees with the authorities that he's possibly dangerous, but her main concern is that the children be returned immediately and safely," Dycus said.

Teresa Mayes faces six felony counts in the case — two first-degree murder charges and four especially aggravated kidnapping charges. She told investigators she saw her husband kill the two in the garage at the Bain home near Whiteville, Tenn., and then she drove him, the younger girls and the bodies to Mississippi, according to affidavits filed in court.

The mother and older girl were killed so Mayes could take the younger sisters, the affidavit said.

Federal authorities pleaded for the public's help in finding the sisters and urged Mayes to surrender. "Turn the girls in, and then peaceably and safely turn yourself in to law enforcement," FBI Special Agent Aaron Ford said at the news conference.

Officials said the reward for information "leading directly to the arrest" of Mayes is now $175,000.

Since the manhunt began for Mayes, people who knew him and the Bains have described him as unusually close to the family and the girls. He was described as a friend of Gary Bain, and the children considered him an uncle.

He was often at the Bain home. Authorities said he was spending the night there before the mother and daughters disappeared so he could help the family to pack for a planned move to Tucson, Ariz., and then drive their belongings west.

A Facebook page, confirmed by law enforcement to be from Adam Mayes using an alias, showed several photos of him and the Bain girls. One picture depicts Mayes and two of the girls smiling, all leaning next to one another cheek to cheek. That page has since been taken down.

Authorities said Alexandria has brown hair and hazel eyes and is 5 feet tall and 105 pounds. Kyliyah has blonde hair and brown eyes and is 4 feet tall and 57 pounds.

Megan Ervin, 16, of Whiteville said at a Tuesday night vigil for the victims that she was a softball teammate of Adrienne Bain last year. She said Mayes spent time at the ballpark, often coming to see the Bain girls play. "He was always here and everybody saw him," Megan said. "He was around all these kids all the time."

Ervin said she never spoke to Mayes. "When I first saw him, I kind of had a bad vibe about him, so I just kind of stayed away," Ervin said. "But then I saw him here all the time and I figured he's no threat to us because he's always here. Obviously, that wasn't true."

Mayes' mother-in-law, who lives in Chatsworth, Ga., said she's known him for 25 years but didn't approve of him because his family never seemed to stay in one place and he couldn't hold down a job. "Teresa's father and I begged her: 'Do not marry him, do not go off with him, do not live with him," she said.

Tate described her daughter as a slow learner who spent her school life in special education. Teresa Mayes was also incapable of having her own children, she said.

She said she believed Mayes had threatened her daughter and perhaps his own mother. "The feelings I have for Adam are as close to hate as I'll ever come because he's destroyed not only the Bain family but he's destroyed my family too," Tate said.
