Obama Gives Muslims $20,000,000 to Compete with Americans

The cost of a college education in the United States has skyrocketed over the past 15-20 years, and more and more of our young adults are starting their lives drowning in student loan debt. Instead of helping American citizens, President Obama has decided to send $20M of our tax dollars to Indonesia to help their citizens get Masters degrees.

Worst of all, these Indonesian students will be attending United States’ universities, so they will be graduating with the same credentials as our citizens. They’ll have an advantage because they’ll be willing to work for less salary than their American counterparts, because they don’t have thousands of dollars in student loans to pay back.

In other words, our tax dollars are now working against us, and for Muslim people in Indonesia.

Is this what you would spend our tax dollars on?

    John Boehner statement :

Today, politics were taken out of student loans. As a part of the House GOP jobs plan, the interest rates are now linked to the markets, meaning students will see lower rates to help make college more affordable. We seized on common ground -- and now students won't have to worry about Washington making it harder to pay for their education.

Obama To Endorse Elizabeth Warren's Student Loan Proposal
    Posted: 06/06/2014 5:36 pm EDT

President Barack Obama on Monday will throw his support behind a new proposal to dramatically revamp the federal student loan program, according to the White House.

A bill proposed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) would allow borrowers to potentially save thousands of dollars by giving them a chance to effectively pay off their high-rate existing loans in exchange for new loans that carry substantially lower interest rates.

The Obama administration initially was hesitant to fully embrace the bill because of disagreements over how to pay for it. But with mounting pressure from advocacy groups, and with a renewed political focus on issues confronting working families, the president has softened his opposition. Obama’s endorsement would be the latest recognition to date of the ascendance of Warren-style populism within the Democratic Party.

An administration official told The Huffington Post that Obama is expected to "call for passage of the refinancing bill" when it comes up for a vote, as it is scheduled to do next week.

Student groups and other organizations focusing on younger Americans enthusiastically support Warren’s bill, under which new interest rates would range from 3.86 percent for loans taken out by borrowers when they were undergraduates to 6.41 percent for parents who took out loans for their children's college tuition, as well as for borrowers who took out loans to pay for graduate school.

The financial industry, perhaps not surprisingly, is less enamored with the proposal. The bill would allow borrowers to refinance loans owned by the private sector into new loans made by the Education Department. Paying off loans early deprives lenders of future interest income, causing paper losses.

Republicans appear to be dead set against enacting the proposal into law, but for different reasons. The Democrats proposed to offset the loss of future federal revenue by increasing taxes on the wealthy -- a pay-for idea that is anathema in conservative circles.

“This bill doesn’t make college more affordable, reduce the amount of money students will have to borrow, or do anything about the lack of jobs grads face in the Obama economy," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in a statement.

The lack of Republican support means the proposal would be unlikely to garner the 60 votes needed to prevent a filibuster in the Senate or pass the GOP-controlled House of Representatives. Analysts at Compass Point Research & Trading, a financial firm, put the odds of it becoming law at less than 10 percent.

But Democrats, including the White House, still are likely to hold a vote in hopes of placing Republicans on the wrong side of an issue that is becoming increasingly important to American households. Some 40 million Americans have student loans. They collectively owe $1.3 trillion, making student debt the second-biggest form of consumer debt after home mortgages. Unpaid student debt has doubled since 2007, according to the Federal Reserve.

"College has never been more important, but it’s also never been more expensive," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said this week. "So we commend the efforts in the Senate and look forward to working with them to pass this bill."

Warren's bill is a central part of Senate Democrats’ so-called “Fair Shot” agenda in advance of November’s elections. Thirty-five other senators are co-sponsoring the measure.

“The bill is part of Democrats' strategy to highlight a number of issues they believe will energize their voting base ahead of the midterm elections,” analysts at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods wrote in a note to clients last month. But the cost to enact the proposal combined with new taxes, they added, “suggests to us that the Warren bill is more about the politics of the issue and not about passing the bill."

Occupy group abolishes nearly $4 million in student loan debt

On the third anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement, an offshoot group announced that it has erased $3.8 million worth of private student loan debt.

The group, Strike Debt, said in a press release issued on Wednesday this week that its Rolling Jubilee initiative has purchased nearly $4 million in private student debt owed by former attendees of Everest College — an institution run by the massive for-profit education company Corinthian Colleges — in turn freeing those former students from a huge chunk of the burdensome loan bills.

“Jubilant Greetings!” the group wrote to 2,700 former Everest students. “We are writing to you with good news: We just got rid of some of your Everest College debt!”

“Everest College is committing widespread fraud,” the letter continues. “It targets lower-income students and students of color, offers low quality education and — with the help of the federal government — buries students under a lifetime of crushing debt, all to profit the one percent. No one should be forced to mortgage their future for an education.”

“You no longer owe the balance of this particular debt. It is gone, a gift with no strings attached. You are no longer under any obligation to settle this account with the original creditor, the bill collector or anyone else.”

This week’s announcement is only the latest from the non-profit organization to tout the results of a two-year-old initiative spawned from the Occupy movement that has previously erased more than $15 million in emergency room bills by purchasing debt from the companies tasked with collecting from debtors, then erasing it entirely using donated funds and never forcing the original debtor to pay them back.

“We buy debt for pennies on the dollar, but instead of collecting it, we abolish it,” Strike Debt explains Rolling Jubilee on the group’s website. “We cannot buy specific individuals' debt — instead, we help liberate debtors at random through a campaign of mutual support, good will and collective refusal. All proceeds go directly to buying and canceling people's debt.”

“This isn’t just a stunt or a spectacle,” Rolling Jubilee member Astra Taylor told NBC News this week. “This isn’t a long-term plan, either. The point is to touch people where they are, and try to create a political awareness out of that.”

Now in the heels of successful other campaigns waged in the three years since the Occupy movement took hold in Lower Manhattan and spread across the United States, Strike Debt says former students of Everest College are the latest to luck out through the Rolling Jubilee initiative, and with reason: in this week’s statement, the group says that students at Everest were “conned” and that Everest and other Corinthian schools “are now being closed or sold off to other predatory companies, leaving students with no good options.”

“Despite Corinthian's dire financial straits, checkered past, and history of lying to and misleading vulnerable students, tens of thousands of people may still be liable for the loans they have incurred while playing by the rules and trying to get an education," one Strike Debt member told CNN.

"Some debts are just, and others are unjust," another organizer, Thomas Gokey, told National Public Radio. "Providing affordable, publicly financed, world-class education is a moral debt we are failing to pay."

In the US, student loan debt now totals roughly $1.2 trillion — surpassing the amount owed through credit card debt — with the average graduate owing $26,600, according to the Institute for College Access and Success.

The whole student loan program is a fraud. In Illinois where students get their loans is based on what the University tells you. This way kick backs and such are easier tracked. State reps get some of those kick backs along with the school and the bank. What a con. It's the poor mans tyrap.

Obama announces changes for student loan repayment
    By Roberta Rampton

ATLANTA, March 10 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama told students at Georgia Tech on Tuesday he wants to make the process of repaying student loans easier to understand and manage.

Obama signed a "student aid bill of rights" and spelled out an assortment of policy tweaks and projects to try to make it easier for people with student loans to pay back their debt.

"We're going to require that the businesses that service your loans provide clear information about how much you owe, what your options are for repaying it, and if you're falling behind, help you get back in good standing with reasonable fees on a reasonable timeline," Obama told a raucous crowd of more than 9,500 students.

"We're going to take a hard look at whether we need new laws to strengthen protections for all borrowers, wherever you get your loans from," Obama said.

Obama has asked the Treasury and Education departments and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to report by Oct. 1 on whether bankruptcy laws or other laws or regulations should be changed for student loans.

The lending industry has resisted loosening bankruptcy standards for student loans, but advocates have argued students burdened by heavy debt should be able to more easily use that as a way to discharge their obligations.

The review will focus on private student loans that do not carry protections given to federal student loan borrowers, such as the ability for borrowers with permanent disabilities to discharge loans, an administration official said.

The White House said 40 million Americans have student loans. More than 70 percent of U.S. students who graduate with a bachelor's degree leave with debt, which averages $28,400.

The White House said it will require clearer disclosures from companies to make sure borrowers understand who is servicing their loan and how to set monthly payments and change repayment plans.

Obama will direct his Education Department to create a system by July 1, 2016, to better oversee and address complaints from borrowers about lenders, servicers and collection agencies, the White House said.

Silly stupid me ... I worked my way thru school - took out a minimum of loans and paid them off in five years. What as I thinking ?
This was in the late 80's early 90's

    ..

So, When I was Young, My Parent's Taught me that YOU DO NOT BORROW MONEY UNLESS YOU KNOW YOU CAN PAY IT BACK. Back in the Good Ole days, You Actually worked after School and on Summer Vacation So if you were planning to go to College you could save your money to pay for it, Not like today just sit and play video games and have your head buried in your Stupid-Phone all the while Smoking A Joint all Summer long. The New Mentality today is I am Entitled.. These people who do have Student loans and Complain they cannot pay them have no problem paying for a Smart-Phone, High Speed Internet, $160 Dollar A Month plus Phone Service, $140 A Month for cable TV, $300 A Month for a Sports Car, Booze, ETC..

How about cutting University Administrators $million + salaries and make college affordable. Making it illegal for Universities to dictate where you can get your loan money from and not allowing kickbacks from those banks to the institutions receiving the money along with the state rep kickbacks is a better start.

President Obama issued a state exclusive op-ed to The Daily Reveille today, outlining his Student Aid Bill of Rights.

An Op-Ed from President Barack Obama

In an economy increasingly built on innovation, the most important skill you can sell is your knowledge. That’s why higher education is, more than ever, the surest ticket to the middle class.

But just when it’s never been more important, it’s also never been more expensive. The average undergrad who borrows to pay for college ends up graduating with about $28,000 in student loan debt.

That’s why my Administration has worked hard to make college more affordable. We expanded tax credits and Pell Grants, enacted the largest reforms to the student loan program in history, and fought to keep interest rates on student loans low.

We’ve acted to let millions of graduates cap loan payments at 10 percent of their incomes, so they don’t have to choose between paying the rent and paying back their debt. I’ve sent Congress my plan to bring the cost of community college down to zero, because two years of higher education should be as free and universal as high school is today.

Last week, I unveiled another way that we can help more Americans afford college. It doesn’t involve any new spending or bureaucracy. It’s a simple declaration of values – a Student Aid Bill of Rights.

It says: Every student deserves access to a quality, affordable education. Every student should be able to access the resources to pay for college. Every borrower has the right to an affordable repayment plan. And every borrower has the right to quality customer service, reliable information, and fair treatment, even if they struggle to repay their loans.

That’s it. Just a few simple principles. But there’s a lot that colleges, lenders, and the people you send to Washington can and should do to live up to them.

Consider the other actions I took last week. We’re creating a way for borrowers to ask questions about their loans or file a complaint and get a fast response.

We’re going to require businesses that service loans to provide clear information about how much students owe and their options for repaying it, and help them get back in good standing if they’re falling behind, with reasonable fees on a reasonable timeline. We’re also going to take a hard look at whether we need new laws to strengthen protections for all borrowers, wherever their loans come from.

If you believe in a Student Aid Bill of Rights that will help more Americans pay for a quality education, I’m asking you to visit WhiteHouse.gov/CollegeOpportunity.

Sign your name to this declaration. Tell your families, friends, and fellow students. I’m going to ask Members of Congress, and lenders, and as many business leaders as I can find. Because making sure that students aren’t saddled with debt before they even get started in life is in all our interests.

This issue is personal to me. My grandfather had a chance to go to college because this country decided that veterans returning from World War II should be able to afford it. My mother was able to raise two kids by herself in part because she got grants that helped pay for her education.

And Michelle and I are where we are today because of scholarships and student loans. We didn’t come from families of means, but we knew that if we worked hard, we’d have a shot at a great education. That’s what this country gave us.

In America, a higher education cannot be a privilege reserved only for the few. It has to be available to everyone who’s willing to work for it.
