A new scientific study published in The Lancet reveals that influenza vaccines only prevent influenza in 1.5 out of every 100 adults who are injected with the flu vaccine. Yet, predictably, this report is being touted by the quack science community, the vaccine-pushing CDC and the scientifically-inept mainstream media as proof that “flu vaccines are 60% effective!”

This absurd claim was repeated across the mainstream media over the past few days, with all sorts of sloppy reporting that didn’t even bother to read the study itself (as usual).

NaturalNews continues to earn a reputation for actually READING these “scientific” studies and then reporting what they really reveal, not what some vaccine-pushing CDC bureaucrat wants them to say. So we purchased the PDF file from The Lancet and read this study to get the real story.

The “60% effectiveness” claim is a total lie – here’s why

What we found is that the “60% effectiveness” claim is utterly absurd and highly misleading. For starters, most people think that “60% effectiveness” means that for every 100 people injected with the flu shot, 60 of them won’t get the flu!

Thus, the “60% effectiveness” claim implies that getting a flu shot has about a 6 in 10 chance of preventing you from getting the flu.

This is utterly false.

In reality — and this is spelled out right in Figure 2 of the study itself, which is entitled, “Efficacy and effectiveness of influenza vaccines: a systematic review and meta-analysis” — only about 2.7 in 100 adults get the flu in the first place!

Flu vaccine stops influenza in only 1.5 out of 100 adults who get the shots

Let’s start with the actual numbers from the study.

The “control group” of adults consisted of 13,095 non-vaccinated adults who were monitored to see if they caught influenza. Over 97% of them did not. Only 357 of them caught influenza, which means only 2.7% of these adults caught the flu in the first place.

The “treatment group” consisted of adults who were vaccinated with a trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine. Out of this group, according to the study, only 1.2% did not catch the flu.

The difference between these two groups is 1.5 people out of 100.

So even if you believe this study, and even if you believe all the pro-vaccine hype behind it, the truly “scientific” conclusion from this is rather astonishing:

In that article, I proclaimed that flu vaccines “don’t work on 99 out of 100 people.” Apparently, if you believe the new study, I was off by 0.5 people out of 100 (at least in adults, see below for more discussion of effectiveness on children).

So where does the media get “60% effective?”

This is called “massaging the numbers,” and it’s an old statistical trick that the vaccine industry (and the pharmaceutical industry) uses over and over again to trick people into thinking their useless drugs actually work.

First, you take the 2.73% in the control group who got the flu, and you divide that into the 1.18% in the treatment group who got the flu. This gives you 0.43.

You can then say that 0.43 is “43% of 2.73,” and claim that the vaccine therefore results in a “57% decrease” in influenza infections. This then becomes a “57% effectiveness rate” claim.

The overall “60% effectiveness” being claimed from this study comes from adding additional data about vaccine efficacy for children, which returned higher numbers than adults (see below). There were other problems with the data for children, however, including one study that showed an increase in influenza rates in the second year after the flu shot.

So when the media (or your doctor, or pharmacist, or CDC official) says these vaccines are “60% effective,” what they really mean is that you would have to inject 100 adults to avoid the flu in just 1.5 of them.

Or, put another way, flu vaccines do nothing in 98.5% of adults.

But you’ve probably already noticed that the mainstream media won’t dare print this statistical revelation. They would much rather mislead everybody into the utterly false and ridiculous belief that flu vaccines are “60% effective,” whatever that means.

How to lie with statistics

This little statistical lying technique is very popular in the cancer industry, too, where these “relative numbers” are used to lie about all sorts of drugs.

You may have heard, for example, that a breast cancer drug is “50% effective at preventing breast cancer!”

But what does that really mean? It could mean that 2 women out of 100 got breast cancer in the control group, and only 1 woman out of 100 got it in the treatment group. Thus, the drug is only shown to work on 1 out of 100 women.

But since 1 is 50% of 2, they will spin the store and claim a “50% breast cancer prevention rate!” And most consumers will buy into this because they don’t understand how the medical industry lies with these statistics. So they will think to themselves, “Wow, if I take this medication, there is a 50% chance this will prevent breast cancer for me!”

And yet that’s utterly false. In fact, there is only a 1% chance it will prevent breast cancer for you, according to the study.

I may have gotten a flu shot once in my life.....I'm not sure if I ever had gotten the flu. : 100% effective?

*We're relatively healthy otherwise. If one has other underlying health issues, it may be necessary. No shame in that or needing one.

I know of several people - mainly Seniors - who have gotten their shot, then got very ill. The flu is a serious thing if not taken care of properly... high risk groups ( like Seniors and very young and their caregivers ) should get their shots... but it is not a "cure all". The problem is that the shot only covers a few types of the flu virus ... what ever they CDC/FDA have "guessed" is the most likely to be a proplem next year. Then they make up the vaccines for those few vectors... and hope for the best. If you are exposed to one of those vectos, you won't get sick ... or as sick as you could have. If you are exposed to one of the other "less common" vectors, you will still get The Flu. It is a gamble which ever way you go...

10 REASONS WHY FLU SHOTS ARE MORE DANGEROUS THAN A FLU

The verdict is out on flu shots. Many medical experts now agree it is more important to protect yourself and your family from the flu vaccine than the flu itself. Let’s take a look at the reasons behind this verdict:

1.) There is a total lack of real evidence that young children even benefit from flu shots. A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo. Also the shots are only able to protect against certain strains of the virus, which means that if you come into contact with a different strain of virus you will still get the flu.

2.) Medical journals have published thousands of articles revealing that injecting vaccines can actually lead to serious health problems including harmful immunological responses and a host of other infections. This further increases the body’s susceptibility to the diseases that the vaccine was supposed to protect against.

3.) Ever noticed how vaccinated children within days or few weeks develop runny noses, pneumonia, ear infections and bronchiolitis? The reason is the flu virus introduced in their bodies which creates these symptoms. It also indicates immuno-suppression i.e. lowering of the immunity. The flu vaccines actually do not immunize but sensitize the body against the virus.

4.) Its a known fact that Flu vaccines contain strains of the flu virus along with other ingredients. Now think about the impact such a vaccine can have over someone with a suppressed immune system? If you have a disease that is already lowering your body’s ability to fight a virus, taking the flu shot will put your body in danger of getting the full effects of the flu and make you more susceptible to pneumonia and other contagious diseases.

5.) The Flu vaccines contain mercury, a heavy metal known to be hazardous for human health. The amount of mercury contained in a multi-dose flu shot is much higher than the maximum allowable daily exposure limit. Mercury toxicity can cause memory loss, depression, ADD, oral health problems, digestive imbalances, respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases and many more such serious health ailments.

And what about the elderly? Can the flu vaccine help them?

6.) There is mounting evidence that flu shots can cause Alzheimer’s disease. One report shows that people who received the flu vaccine each year for 3 to 5 years had a 10-fold greater chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease than people who did not have any flu shots. Also with age the immune system weakens, thus lowering your ability to fight off infections. Introducing the flu virus in the bodies of elderly could have dangerous consequences.

Can we trust the authorities who are promoting the wide-spread use of flu vaccines?

7.) The Center for Disease Control appoints a 15-member Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). This committee is responsible for deciding who should be vaccinated each year. Almost all the ACIP have a financial interest in immunizations. It’s all about the money and may have very little to do with your health and well being. The very people pushing these vaccines stand to make billions of dollars. This itself creates a doubt on how effective these flu vaccines really are?

8.) Research shows that over-use of the flu-vaccine and drugs like Tamiflu and Relenza can actually alter flu viruses and cause them to mutate into a more deadly strain. Couple this with drug resistant strains and you have virtually no benefits with much risk.

9.) There is enough evidence that shows that the ingredients present in the flu vaccinations can actually cause serious neurological disorders. In the 1976 swine flu outbreak, many who got the flu shots developed permanent nerve damage. Flu vaccines can contain many harmful materials including detergent, mercury, formaldehyde, and strains of live flu virus. Is this what you want to put in YOUR body?

10.) Trying to guess what strain to vaccinate against each season has proved to be no more effective than a guessing game. This has been very true in recent years with the H1N1 strain. Moreover getting multi-shots will only prove more dangerous as different strains of viruses and harmful ingredients are introduced into your body.

Flu shots are indeed more dangerous than you could think, and it is best to rely on natural ways to protect against the flu rather than getting yourself vaccinated.

Isn’t it interesting that the main stream public health officials never promote the various proven ways to avoid the flu other than through vaccination? How about spending some of the billions of advertising dollars teaching us natural ways to boost our immune systems and avoid the flu without harmful and sometimes deadly vaccinations.

CDC: 90% of children who died from flu did not receive the flu vaccine

The flu vaccine dilemma. Should your child get one? Should you? The CDC says absolutely, and numbers would appear to back them up. Ninety percent of children who died over the last few years from flu illnesses did not receive the flu vaccine, says the Centers for Disease Control. “Flu hit young and middle-aged adults hard last year and just over 100 children died,” Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University told NBC News. “There is simply no reason to take the risk.”

In March of 2013, the CDC reported a total of 105 influenza-associated pediatric deaths at the time for the 2012-2013 season, adding that the “report indicates that about 90 percent occurred in children who had not received a flu vaccination” for that season.

The March 2013 CDC release stated:

“This review also indicated that 60 percent of deaths occurred in children who were at high risk of developing serious flu-related complications, but 40 percent of these children had no recognized chronic health problems. The proportions of pediatric deaths occurring in children who were unvaccinated and those who had high-risk conditions are consistent with what has been seen in previous seasons.”

According to an updated CDC fact sheet, “a recent study showed that flu vaccine reduced children’s risk of flu-related pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission by 74% during flu seasons from 2010-2012.”

The CDC has said over 150 million doses of the flu vaccine are available to the public. Laws are in place as well that wipe out most patient co-pays. Despite the dual advantages of availability and low cost, only approximately one-third of non-risk adults have received a flu shot. How safe is the flu shot? Web MD, speaking of the H1N1 vaccine, said “one or two out of every million people who get a flu shot will get a serious neurological reaction.” Flu.gov says “seasonal flu vaccines have a very good safety track record.”

But critics of the vaccine say they may contain harmful toxins, dyes, metals, preservatives or carcinogenics. Others say the vaccines, which are only guesswork when it comes to the potential strains that will onset each year, are building up drug resistances, thus enabling a pathogen-ripe environment for so-called superbugs.

I ended up in the hospital in '87 with the flu and nearly died ... because I had just gotten over the chicken pox ( at age 21 ) and my immune system was wiped out. This would not been "recognized as a chronic health problem" -- so their data is skewed and this article is tainted to say the least. - JMHO Under normal conditions and for anyone reasonable healthy ... the flu is rarely fatal.

This season’s flu vaccine is just 23 percent effective against the illness, further evidence that the inoculation was mismatched to the viral strains that eventually infected Americans.

The vaccine’s effectiveness “is relatively low compared with previous seasons, when circulating viruses and vaccine viruses were well matched,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an early estimate published today. The agency was able to make an estimate early in the 2014-2015 flu season because the flu has reached an epidemic level faster than in recent years.

Since the CDC began conducting effectiveness studies in 2004-2005, estimates have ranged from a 10 percent to a 60 percent reduction in a person’s risk of having to go to the doctor because of the flu, the agency said. Effectiveness is from 50 percent to 60 percent when the viruses circulating and those in the vaccine are well matched, the CDC said.

For the week ended Jan. 3, 7 percent of all deaths reported through a CDC monitoring system were attributed to influenza or pneumonia, above the 6.9 percent threshold for an epidemic at this point in the season, according to the agency’s website. Twenty-six children have died from the flu this season.

To allow manufacturers sufficient time to produce and distribute a vaccine, health officials must decide before the season begins which viruses to include. H3N2 viruses have been the most common this season and about 70 percent of them have been different from the strains in the inoculation.

Patient Age

Vaccine effectiveness varies by age. The vaccine has kept children with H3N2 viruses out of the doctor’s office 26 percent of the time, the CDC said. For adults 49 and younger, the inoculation has been 12 percent effective and for people 50 and older, 14 percent.

The low effectiveness “underscores the need for additional prevention and treatment efforts this season, including the appropriate use of influenza antiviral medications for treatment,” the CDC said.

Antiviral medications include Roche Holding AG’s Tamiflu. Manufacturers of antiviral treatments have said they have sufficient supply. Some areas of high demand have experienced spot shortages, so patients may need to check multiple pharmacies, the agency said.

Mandatory Flu Shot For Health Care Workers, Patient Protection Or Politics?

Heath care professionals all over the country are being told to accept a flu shot, wear a mask, or lose their jobs. These mandates are purportedly in the name of patient safety. However, this isn’t as easy of a decision as it would appear to most. Despite general beliefs that the flu shot is safe and effective, highly respected institutions such as the Cochrane Review have repeatedly found little to no benefit to the flu vaccine in healthy adults, or in health care workers, even in years when the strain in the shot closely matches the virus circulating among the general population. When the shot is nearly a complete mismatch, like this year, it makes the decision even more difficult.


As has been reported by the Inquisitr, the CDC has admitted that the effectiveness of this year’s flu shot is only a measly 23 percent. In “good” years, the cited percentage is anywhere from 60 -90 percent, but even those numbers are being called into question by a variety of sources.

Dr. Eli Perencevich, an infectious disease physician and epidemiologist who was in charge of the influenza response at a major Maryland hospital, took issue with the way the CDC was calculating the 62 percent efficacy numbers it touted for the 2012-2013 flu season. He concluded that the CDC was measuring effectiveness using a method known as odds ratio (OR) instead of the more commonly used relative risk (RR) method. When he ran the numbers using the OR method, the CDC’s numbers matched his own. When he switched to the RR method, the method normally used in cohort studies, he found the flu shot’s effectiveness was only 44 percent. He noted another abnormality in their numbers as they pertained to the control groups. Correcting for those, he found the effectiveness numbers to be closer to 34 percent.

The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) does not reanalyze the CDC’s data, but has similar things to say.

The strains of the flu that go into the shot are an educated guess. Not a guarantee. Even when the strains are matched to what is sickening people, the flu shot is not even close to 100 percent effective in preventing transmission, limiting sick days, hospital admissions, or secondary infections. Despite these prodigious shortcomings, many major health care centers are forcing their workers to choose between a marginally effective shot (some few allow their employees to opt for a mask) or their jobs, in the name of patient safety. However, in light of the CDC disclosure that the shot doesn’t contain the proper strains, no major medical centers have made the jump to requiring their vaccinated personnel to wear masks, even though the vaccine isn’t really protecting anyone this year. The real story may be not patient protection, but federal dollars. The ACA has made changes to federal reimbursements by adding a long list of requirements. One of those requirements is the disclosure of employee vaccination rates. Failure to disclose, or hit target percentages, may result in loss of reimbursements. For health care workers who react poorly to the flu shot, they now risk their health to keep their job, potentially in the name of money for their employer.

CDC Admits Flu Vaccine Less Effective Than Expected

Does it seem like everyone you know is getting sick this winter? That may be because this year's flu vaccine isn't as strong expected, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The vaccine has an 18 percent effectiveness against the dominant H3N2 flu strain, the CDC reports. Earlier in the season, flu shot protection level was estimated at 23 percent.

"There's more data that's come in now, given how much of the flu is caused by this mutated strain of H3N2," ABC News' Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser told ABC News today. "It turns out the vaccine is even less effective than they thought."

Children have even worse odds: for kids ages 2 to 8, the flu vaccine's effectiveness is just 15 percent, according to the CDC.

Children tend to get more viral illnesses than adults, Dr. Besser said, because they're in physical contact with each other and don't have years of flu exposure built up.

The CDC also reports that the nasal-spray version of the vaccine, which was "recommended especially for young children," Dr. Besser said, "is shown to not be effective at all."

Dr. Besser added that the CDC will not preferentially recommend the nasal spray vaccine ahead of the shot and both will be recommended as options.

It may be the end of February, but we're still not out of the woods for flu season.

"Flu season is winding down," Dr. Besser said, but "there is still flu activity around the country."

"We encourage people who are sick to stay home from school and work, and cover their coughs and sneezes," he added.
