    Occupy Wall Street Protests

Occupy Wall Street Protests Rankle the Rich
By ALAN FARNHAM | ABC News – 8 hrs ago

In the 5th week of the Occupy Wall St. movement, with protests now having spread now to 150 U.S. cities and even to Europe, the apparent objects of that protest—the richest 1 percent—are starting to push back.

The grumbling from the wealthy took off with a sign posted in the windows of the Chicago Board of Trade last week, in a place where street protesters easily could see it, which proclaimed: "We Are The 1%."

No one is sure who put up the sign, but plenty of folks in the building could be included in the 1 percent.

If a joke, it was one many protesters didn't get. "I thought [the sign] was extremely disrespectful," a special education teacher named Corey, 35, told TimeOut Chicago. Mike Polski, 53, from Joliet, disagreed, telling TimeOut, "These people wish they were the 1 percent! The 1 percent are billionaires."

He's wrong. According to IRS tax data, anybody earning $380,354 or more qualifies for membership in the top 1 percent. That would include some of the better-paid traders at the Board of Trade. (IRS data shows, too, that the top 1 percent holds 35.6 percent of the nation's wealth, not the 50 percent claimed by Occupiers.)

Whoever posted the sign, trader Eric Wilkinkson says he is in sympathy with it. The real parties responsible for the nation's economic ills are not the rich, in his view.

Says Wilkinson, "It's capitol hill and Obama that are the culprits. They're the ones not doing their jobs." The Occupy movement he calls misguided. Somebody rich, he says, "Should not be penalized for making headway in this society. They should pay their fair share of taxes, but they shouldn't be taxed more. They deserve their money."

Wilkinson under his nickname—the Wolfman—has gone out on the street to film a video giving his own take on the protest (see "twitter@wolfmansblog).

On Twitter, one anonymous person who claims to relate elevator gossip at tony investment bank Goldman Sachs -- which may have more 1 percenters than anywhere in America -- tweeted: "What are they complaining about? People seem a hell of a lot happier in TGI Fridays commercials than they ever do at Gramercy Tavern." Another tweet said: "A protester sees my Benz, and wants to rip me out of it. A real man sees my car, and wants to work hard so he can buy it one day."

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain easily qualifies as a 1 percenter, since his financial disclosure forms show that in 2010 and 2011 he earned generous fees from sitting on a number of corporate boards, including that of Whirlpool, which alone paid him $359,008.

Cain says people who are not rich have only themselves to blame. "Don't blame Wall Street," he told protesters, in an interview with the Wall St. Journal. "Don't blame the big banks. If you don't have a job and you're not rich, blame yourself. It's not a person's fault because they succeeded. It is a person's fault if they failed. And so this is why I don't understand these demonstrations and what is it that they're looking for."

Billionaire New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday doesn't think too much of Occupiers, either, saying in an interview with New York City's WOR Radio, "If the jobs they're trying to get rid of in the city—the people that work in finance, which is a big part of our economy—go away, we're not going to have any money to pay our municipal employees or clean the parks or anything else."

And another thing, he says: "None of this is good for tourism."

Evil Corporations Get Unwitting Support at Wall Street Protests
    By Doug Powers • October 8, 2011 03:08 PM

We’ve covered the personal connections to Wall Street of some of the celebrities who are supporting the “Occupy Wall Street” protesters.
    http://michellemalkin.com/2011/10/05...et-protesters/

Now there’s a picture going around that helps establish a personal Wall Street/corporate connection to the protesters themselves (Doug Ross has a full size pic here http://directorblue.blogspot.com/201...ons-photo.html ):

As for political leaders, President Obama has claimed the protesters represent “broad based frustration” with the financial system. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_1...07-503544.html Nancy Pelosi said “God bless them” and that no longer will the “recklessness of some on Wall Street cause massive joblessness on Main Street.” http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1011/65368.html

In 2008, Obama raked in millions upon millions in campaign cash from Wall Street http://articles.nydailynews.com/2008...or-john-mccain and Nancy Pelosi’s husband made his bones as an investment banker. http://articles.latimes.com/2011/jun...ealth-20110616

History won’t record this as the largest protest ever, but it might take the prize for the most ironic.

Update: Nancy Pelosi is finally speaking out about this madness:

“I have concerns about some of the language that is being used because I saw this myself in the late 70s in San Francisco, this king of rhetoric. … It created a climate in which violence took place. … I wish we would all curb our enthusiasm in some of the statements and understand that some of the ears that it is falling on are not a balanced as the person making the statements may assume.”

Wait, nevermind — that was in reference to the Tea Parties in 2009. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u46QoT_eNQ8

Meanwhile, Pelosi managed to pin some of the blame for the ongoing Wall Street protests on… you guessed it: George W. Bush.

Woodstock without the rain and music. Morons in search of relevance. These clowns elected a POTUS who is a reflection of them. No need to work hard because decades of that warm, fuzzy self-esteem program has convinced them that they are entitled to all their heart’s desire without having to achieve anything. Just show up and the goodies of the world will be doled out. Guess they missed those lines in the former Soviet Union, where the citizens would wait for their handouts which didn’t include the latest technology. Spoiled brats! When the weather gets nasty, they will slink back into the shadows. Are any of these clowns willing to die for their beliefs? Probably not.

NY securities sector may lose 10,000 jobs: report
By Sakthi Prasad in Bangalore | Reuters – 5 hrs ago

(Reuters) - New York City's securities industry could lose nearly 10,000 jobs by the end of 2012, according to a report by New York state's comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, the Wall Street Journal said.

In a report due for release on Tuesday DiNapoli also said bonuses were likely to shrink this year, reflecting lower profits on Wall Street, the WSJ reported. Financial firms play a major role in New York's economy and its budgets. DiNapoli's office estimates that one in eight city jobs and one in 13 state jobs rely on securities firms.

Big financial firms have been cutting jobs this year as the industry tries to cope with worsening market conditions and increased regulatory scrutiny. Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse Group AG, Barclays PLC and Bank of America Corp have already announced job cuts. However, it is not clear how many of those job cuts would be made in New York city.

New York state comptroller's office could not immediately be reached for comment by Reuters outside regular U.S. business hours.

Scores arrested at Occupy Boston protest site
By Ros Krasny | Reuters – 17 mins ago

BOSTON (Reuters) - Tensions boiled over in the early hours of Tuesday in downtown Boston, where police arrested about 100 protesters after the Occupy Boston group expanded its footprint and was told by authorities to backtrack. Protesters said late on Monday that police had given participants an ultimatum to return to their small original encampment by nightfall or be moved along. But it was not until after 1 a.m. ET Tuesday when hundreds of Boston and Transit police officers, some in riot gear, moved in on the group, handcuffing protesters and tearing down tents. "At 1:30 this morning hundreds of police in full riot gear brutally attacked Occupy Boston," the group said in a news release, adding that authorities "made no distinction between protesters, medics, or legal observers."

Police said no protesters or police were injured in the maneuver. "Civil disobedience will not be tolerated," Boston Mayor Thomas Menino told the local Fox News affiliate in an interview early Tuesday.

Monday evening, the Boston Police Department sent a tweet to @Occupy_Boston: "The BPD respects your right to protest peacefully. We ask for your ongoing cooperation."

Protesters' tents have been set up in Dewey Square Park in downtown Boston all month, but on Monday expanded to a larger section of the nearby Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. Many linked arms Monday evening in a show of solidarity on their expanded turf.

Boston earlier saw one of its biggest rallies so far in a movement that began in New York last month to protest against perceived Wall Street excesses and other social issues and has spread to cities across the nation. Hundreds of protesters, including many college students, marched in support of Occupy Boston. Protests across the country have objected to what they see as an unacceptable income gap between rich and poor. They also have complained about the Wall Street bailout in 2008, which they say aided banks while average Americans suffered under high unemployment and job insecurity.

In fliers handed out on site in Boston, and in a press release, the police told protesters: "if asked to leave an area, please do so peacefully." Police said officers would arrest those knowingly in violation of the law "if necessary." They also warned protesters they would use video cameras to record any disorderly behavior.

In return, protesters urged their followers to call police and the fire department to express support for Occupy Boston and "come down to Dewey Square right now!"

Thousands in Chicago protest financial industry
By Mary Wisniewski and Ann Saphir | Reuters – 8 hrs ago

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Thousands of people including teachers, religious leaders and union workers marched in downtown Chicago on Monday to voice mounting anger over joblessness and income inequality in protests that snarled rush-hour traffic.

Chanting "We are the 99 percent" and "Tax, tax, tax the rich," some demonstrators marched on Michigan Avenue and gathered outside the Chicago Art Institute where a U.S. futures industry trade group was holding an evening cocktail reception.

Others marched outside a luxury hotel near to where the American Mortgage Bankers Association was holding a meeting downtown.

Five separate "feeder marches" -- which converged into one giant march up Michigan Ave -- were inspired by, but not formally affiliated with, the Occupy Wall Street movement that began in New York last month and sparked smaller protests nationwide.

Police estimated a crowd of around 3,000 protesters at the events, organized by the "Stand Up Chicago" coalition with the stated goal of reclaiming "our jobs, our homes and our schools," according to the group's website. "We really want to highlight the role the financial industry has played," said Adam Kader of Arise Chicago, an interfaith workers' rights group and part of the coalition.

"They're here in our backyard, so this is the time to send a message about how we're really hurting," he added, saying the demonstration would focus on foreclosures, unemployment and lack of municipal funding for key services.

Police arrested 26 demonstrators, many wearing Chicago Teachers Union T-shirts, who linked arms and sat down in Monroe Street as they chanted "Save our schools, save our homes!" They were ticketed and released. Another demonstrator was arrested and faces a charge of battery on a police officer.

Nearby, a crowd chanted "Shame on you!" to members of the Futures Industry Association who peered out from a balcony of the Chicago Art Institute, where they attended a party.

Several protesters paid $2,245 per badge to gain admission to the Mortgage Bankers Association event, organizers said. One protester, dressed in a suit, got to a microphone during a panel discussion and asked Michael Heid, president of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, a top national mortgage lender: "How do you sleep at night?"

The man asked Heid how could he even visit the Chicago area since so many been affected by foreclosures locally. Heid answered that he felt like he was before a congressional panel with such a tough line of questioning.

Mortgage Bankers Association CEO David Stevens had advised conference attendees in the morning not to "engage or confront" the protesters, and to use pedestrian tunnels and other means to leave the building if needed. "We all recognize that our industry faces a trust deficit with policymakers and the public, and that people in our industry contributed to the events that led to the financial crisis," the Association said in a statement.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, speaking at an evening event on social trends, said the anti-Wall Street protests were tied to a lack of attention on jobs by Washington politicians. "It grows out of the anger people feel. People want focus and attention and passion on jobs," Reed said.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, at the same event, said: "There is a major economic restructuring going on where the middle class in this country are feeling an angst they haven't felt."

    ARRIVING BY THE BUSLOAD

On the streets, despite mostly orderly marching and chants, anger was the common element among the crowds of protesters. "I've got loads of loans," said Wedad Yassin, a student at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois, who was among the protesters. She said she wanted a fairer tax system that "stops putting our taxes towards war" and invests in education. "Obama talks about there's going to be some answers to the education problem, but I don't see it," Yassin said.

Protesters arrived by the busload, including many Chicago Teachers Union members who climbed off yellow school buses that parked near police barricades.

Andromachi Koumbis, an elementary school teacher, said she showed up because she was unhappy with what she termed "tampering" with the Chicago teachers labor contract that will add hours to the school day. "I don't mind longer hours if it's done right," she said. "It's funny that they say kids first, and then they bail out big corporations."

Cary Bunnett, a 52-year-old Chicago electrician, was at the Mortgage Bankers protest and she claimed Bank of America had mishandled her mortgage modification on her $2,500-a-momth home loan. She said she was laid off due to a lack of building activity, which cut her income in half. "You don't see any cranes around downtown Chicago anymore," she said. "There's no work for me. What am I supposed to do?"

"I've stopped making my house payment because I just can't do it anymore, but they won't give me the modification they say I qualify for," Bunnett said.

The protests included lighter moments. At the corner of Monroe Street and Michigan Ave, horseback-mounted police smiled when demonstrators chanted "Police need a raise!"

More demonstrations were planned for the next three days.

Roderick Drew, spokesman for the city's law department, said protesters had worked with police, who aimed to allow free speech without impairing people's ability to get around.

Chicago has already several weeks of daily protests outside the Federal Reserve Bank by "Occupy Chicago," an echo of the larger Wall Street protests. Occupy Chicago demonstrators participated with the Stand Up Chicago marchers on Monday.

10 Thoughts About Occupy Wall Street
John Hawkins - Right Wing News

    1) If you're serious about going after Wall Street, it's hard to see how you could vote for Barack Obama who ladled out billions in taxpayer dollars to Wall Street corporations. "Wall Street (also) donated twice as much money to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008 as it did to John McCain’s." How much sense does it make to protest Wall Street and then vote for the guy who is doing more to help Wall Street at America's expense than anyone else in the country?

    2) The Tea Partiers have been called racist because there aren't a lot of minorities who show up at the protests. Yet, judging by the pictures, there aren’t any more minorities at Occupy Wall Street. Does that mean they're racist? In fact, given that black Americans vote Democratic 9-to-1 and Hispanic Americans vote Democratic 2-to-1, shouldn't there be a lot more minorities at Occupy Wall Street than at a Tea Party?

    3) If you "occupy a job," you don't have time to spend weeks "Occupying Wall Street." If you don't "occupy a job," it would make more sense to put in resumes with Wall Street firms than protest them. If you don't have the skills to get a job on Wall Street or anywhere else, you should "occupy" a university or a training class to build some marketable skills, rather than sleeping in the park like a hobo and blocking the Brooklyn Bridge so that working people can't get home.

    4) Liberals have claimed that Tea Parties are violent mobs, but there have been more arrests, violence, and attacks on police in just the Occupy Wall Street protest in New York City than in every Tea Party combined nationwide. Also, if reports are to be believed, I'm pretty sure there have been more people relieving themselves in alleyways and on police cars, too.

    5) Although the reasons behind the Occupy Wall Street protests are extremely fuzzy, which is pretty weird if you think about it, the most common theme that has come up is a complaint about the bank bailouts. First of all, it's worth noting that unlike many of the Republicans in D.C., much of the conservative base was opposed to the bank bailouts right from the start. In fact, back in September of 2008, 71% of conservative bloggers were opposed to the bailout. Additionally, the economic collapse that led to the bailout was caused by the government, not the banks. The government bent the banks over a barrel, forced them to make risky loans, and then when those loans eventually went bad, the same people who created the problem pretended they had nothing to do with it. So, you can protest Wall Street all day long, but the real culprits are in D.C.

    6) The word "astroturf" keeps falsely being applied to Tea Party protests by liberals. Meanwhile, there are actually ads on Craigslist offering to pay people to go out and protest at Occupy Wall Street.

    7) There are a lot of college students protesting that they have huge student loans to pay off, but they can't find a job that pays enough to do it. For some people, this may be a short term problem. Know where my first post-college job was in a crummy economy? Wal-Mart Portrait Studios. What a wonderful use of my four year degree that was. That being said, if you ran up $60,000 in debt so you could get a degree in philosophy or women's studies at a private school, whose fault is that? Certainly not Wall Street. If you rack up huge amounts of debt so you can get a degree that qualifies you to spend the next 30 years as a convenience store clerk, that was YOUR dumb decision and how you take care of it should be YOUR problem.

    8) As more Democrats like Nancy Pelosi start to associate themselves with Occupy Wall Street, it seems fair to ask these politicians to answer two basic questions. Will they give back the campaign contributions they've already received from Wall Street? Will they continue to take campaign contributions from Wall Street?

    9) Nobody, not even the Occupy Wall Street protesters, knows exactly why they're protesting or what they're trying to accomplish, but the general idea seems to be that the people who aren't paying income taxes are complaining that the people who are paying taxes aren't handing over enough of their money. Apparently, the phrase, "The world doesn't owe you a living" needs to make a comeback in homes across America.

    10) As Herman Cain said, "You can demonstrate all you want on Wall Street. The problem is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue!" The solutions to America's problems aren't going to be found in punishing corporations, the rich, or the successful. They'll be found in shrinking the government, giving more power to the people, and getting more Americans to form corporations, become rich, and become successful.

    "What do we want ?"
    "We don't know!"
"When do we want it ?"
"We don't care - but bring me a decaf mocha latte !"

I want to hear more about this man.....where does he stand on other issues?
