    EBT Abuse: The Cash-for-Drunkards Program
    By Michelle Malkin • January 11, 2013 09:20 AM

From New York to New Mexico and across the dependent plains, welfare recipients are getting sauced on the public dime. Drunk, besotted, bombed. But while politicians pay lip service to cutting government waste, fraud and abuse, they’re doing very little in practice to stop the EBT party excesses. Where’s the compassion for taxpayers?

You see the signs everywhere: “We accept EBT.” Fast-food restaurants do. Clothing retailers do. Auto repair shops, liquor stores and even sushi joints are joining the club. “EBT” stands for the federal government’s electronic benefits transfer card, which is intended to provide poor people with food stamps and cash assistance for basic necessities. The two separate programs were combined into one ATM-like card designed to reduce the “stigma” attached to Nanny State dependency, and — voila! — an entirely new method of mooching was born.

If the idea was to eliminate the embarrassment of life on the dole, the social justice crowd succeeded phenomenally. Last weekend, the New York Post blew the lid off scammers who brazenly swiped their EBT cards “inside Hank’s Saloon in Brooklyn; the Blue Door Video porn shop in the East Village; The Anchor, a sleek SoHo lounge; the Patriot Saloon in TriBeCa; and Drinks Galore, a liquor distributor in The Bronx.” Out: Cash for clunkers. In: Cash for drunkards!

My home state of Colorado has seen similar abuse. Last year, local TV station 9NEWS reported that more than $40,000 was withdrawn from ATMs in metro-area liquor stores despite prohibitions against such spending. Colorado EBT users also splurged at Denver’s Elitch Gardens amusement park, Disneyland, Universal Studios in Los Angeles and on the Las Vegas strip.

In New Mexico, Jim Scarantino of Watchdog.org reported that in just a three-month period, EBT cards were used at multiple liquor stores, girly bars, smoke shops and casinos both inside and outside the state. Californians are notorious EBT fraud artists; some $70 million in EBT funds were withdrawn from outside the state’s borders over the past several years, including nearly $12 million taken out in Las Vegas. Watchdog.org kept tabs on government workers in Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin nabbed in EBT fraud rings and schemes.

Several state legislatures have barred EBT spending on these vices, along with tattoo parlors, lottery tickets and cigarettes. Last February, President Obama signed GOP-backed welfare reform measures into law aimed at closing the so-called “strip club loophole” and preventing welfare recipients from blowing their cash benefits on booze, porn and gambling. But that law doesn’t go into effect until next year. And many politicians are just shrugging their shoulders, muttering “Whaddya gonna do?”

Here’s a radical idea: How about making taxpayer protection a priority for once and, yes, getting serious about strengthening the stigma on bottomless entitlement dependency and entitlement abuse?

According to the Department of Agriculture, illegal food stamp use costs the public upward of $750 million a year. A report by the Government Accountability Institute last fall revealed that “few security measures are in place to monitor EBT card fraud. … Nationwide, the USDA has approximately 100 investigators policing over 200,000 authorized EBT retailers.” In Florida, the report noted, 63 investigators carry the burden of policing more than three million EBT users.

Excuse-makers for the welfare-takers emphasize that both eligibility fraud and EBT card trafficking fraud are minuscule. But a bottle here, a case there, a pole dance here, a lap dance there, and soon it all starts to add up. With food stamp rolls exploding under both Republican and Democratic administrations while enforcement resources shrink nationwide, EBT has taken on a whole new meaning: Exploitation of Broke Taxpayers. Shame.

Food Stamp Recipients Increased 11,133 Per Day in Obama's First Term
by Warner Todd Huston22 Jan 2013

One way to mark the legacy of a presidency is to tally statistics, and at least one stat is not very flattering for President Obama: the number of Americans on food stamps has grown by 11,133 people every day during his first term.

In 2009, when Obama took office, recipients of SNAP (Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program) stood at 31,939,110 Americans; by the end of his first term, the latest tally numbered 47,525,329.

That is an expansion of 11,133 people per day between January of 2009 and October of 2012.

The Congressional Budget office reports that SNAP enrollment increased 70 percent during that period, with the food stamp budget growing by $2.7 billion over fiscal year 2011.

Also, it is reported that "SNAP has increased every fiscal year that Obama has been in office. In FY 2009--when SNAP was still known as the 'Food Stamp' program--the government spent $55.6 billion."

Then there is the continued flat jobs market, made worse by millions of Americans that have just given up looking for work.

As the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, "The number of Americans age 16 or older who decided not to work or even to seek a job increased by 8,332,000 to a record 88,839,000 in President Barack Obama’s first term."

    America's Death Spiral.
These 11 States now have More People on Welfare than they do Employed

Last month, the Senate Budget Committee reports that in fiscal year 2011, between food stamps, housing support, child care, Medicaid and other benefits, the average U.S. household below the poverty line received $168.00 a day in government support. What’s the problem with that much support? Well, the median household income in America is just over $50,000, which averages out to $137.13 a day. To put it another way, being on welfare now pays the equivalent of $30.00 an hour for a 40-hour week, while the average job pays $25.00 an hour.

It seems difficult for the people I know to receive any assistance from IL. Maybe all the illegals are getting those handouts.

Subject: Fwd: . Makes my hair curl.... wow Mine too !!
This email was sent to me by one of my neighbors who is a Realtor:
Hello America the new to earn you way???
Here is one to curl the hair on the back of the neck. We should all
    be so smart.

Recently, our good friend Michael (a local realtor) shared his
experience with Leisa and I about an "Obama supporter" he encountered
while showing homes to a low income, working family in Pontiac, MI..
We asked him to please write it down so we could share it with you.
YOU SHOULD BE SITTING DOWN WHILE READING THIS:
As a Realtor for the past 28 years I thought I’d seen or heard it all…
    Until now.

I was showing homes in Pontiac, MI. one afternoon recently and showed
up at a home at the 4:00 pm time my appointment was scheduled for.
After I woke up the homeowner, she let us in and then proceeded to
tell my buyers and I that she has already entered into a contract to
sell the home on a short-sale. (A short-sale is a sale where the banks
accepts less money than is owed on the home). After some chit-chat,
she proceeded to tell us that she and her sister (who also lived in
the area) were buying each other’s homes via the short-sale process. I
mentioned to her that I thought relatives could not be involved in
those transactions. She smiled and said "We have two different last
names so no one knows the difference".

She went on to tell us that each of them owed over 100K on their homes
and were in the process of buying each other’s homes for about 10-15K
cash. To top it off, they were each receiving $3,000.00 in government
provided relocation assistance at the closing.

My buyers and I were amazed that she was outright admitting to fraud
and yet, she continued. She began to tell us that the best part of her
scheme was that because they currently were not working that they
(both) are now receiving Section 8 Vouchers. I said I thought those
were for renters and she said “That’s the best part; me and my sister
are going to be renting each other’s homes so we don’t even have to
move, and Obama is going to give us each $800.00 a month to pay the
rent!” She then picked up a picture she had framed of Obama and did a
little happy dance around her living room and while she kissed the
picture she was singing "Thank you Obama.... thank you Obama."
So here is the bottom line… Both of these scammers got at least
$80,000.00 in debt forgiven, $3,000.00 in cash for relocation (when in
fact they did not relocate) and to boot, you and I will now be paying
(through our taxes) $1,600.00 in rent for each them each and every
    month.... perhaps forever!

And I also would not be at all surprised if they are receiving food
stamps and whatever other programs are available for anyone who is
willing to lie to get assistance.

These women went from working and paying about $900.00 each in
mortgage payments to staying home and getting paid $800.00 each per
month to live in the same home they had been living in and all they
had to do was lie on a few papers. This craziness has to stop! I’m
sure this kind of fraud is going on each and every day all across the
country and no one wants to touch the subject of entitlements because
they might OFFEND someone or lose a vote or two.

By the way... she had an almost new SUV in the driveway, three flat
screen TV's and a very nice computer set up in her living room which
was furnished entirely with nice leather furniture.

    I'TS THE NEW 'AMERICAN WAY'.....

    The Lady Needs Your Help!

Sharon Jasper has spent 57 of her 58 years dedicated to one cause and one cause only, and has nothing to show for her dedicated servitude ....

She has lived in Section 8 housing all but 1 of her 58 years. It was a legacy passed down from her parents who moved into Section 8 housing in 1949 when she was six months old. She has passed the legacy down to her children and grandchildren, but fears they may have to get jobs to pay for the utilities and deposits.

She laments about her one year hiatus from the comfort of her Section 8 nirvana, 'I tried it for a year -- you know, working and all. It's not anything I would want to go through again, or wish on anyone in my family, but I am damn proud of that year.'

Sharon was moved out of her St. Bernard housing project after hurricane Katrina and into a new, yet albeit, substandard quarterage. As can be noted from the above photo of her new Section 8 home, it is repugnant and not suitable for someone of Sharon Jasper's seniority status in the system. 'Don't be fooled by them hardwood floors,' says Sharon. 'They told me they were putting in scraped wood floors cause it was more expensive and elegant, but I am not a fool -- that was just a way to make me take scratched up wood because I am black. The 60 inch HD TV? It may look nice but it is not plasma .... It's not a plasma because I'm black. Now they want me to pay a deposit and utilities on this dump. 'Do you know why?'

She has held her tongue in silence through the years of abuse by the system, but it came to a head at the New Orleans's city council meeting where discussions were under way about the tearing down of the St. Bernard projects. When a near riotous exchange between groups opposing the tearing down of St. Bernard and groups wanting the dilapidated buildings torn down and newer ones built, Sharon unleashed verbal hell with her once silenced tongue. The object of her oratory prowess was an acquiescent poor white boy in attendance. The context of her scathing rebuke was, 'Just because you pay for my house, my car, my big screen and my food, Medical needs. I will not be treated like a slave!' and 'Back up and Shut up! White boy Shut up, white boy!

    See for yourself :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvUx8vK-zcg

Recapping from the log of the city council minutes; Sharon repines, 'Our families have been displaced all over the United States. They are being forced to commit crimes in cities they are unfamiliar with. It is a very uncomfortable situation for them. Bring them back, then let's talk about redevelopment.'

Sharon directs the reporter's attention across the street to Duncan Plaza where homeless people are living in tents and states that, 'I might do better out there with one of these tents.' She further lamented her sentiments about her situation, 'I might be poor, but I don't have to live poor.'
Any wonder why this country is in the shape it is? Maybe we should all just chip in and get her the plasma TV she so richly deserves!

    Food stamps for your pets?
    Posted: Feb 27, 2013 11:49 AM

(CNN) - Families facing hard times don't have to let their pets go hungry. A new donation based program called Pet Food Stamps can help people buy pet food and supplies. The organization says the food stamps could help families avoid giving up their dog or cat because they can't afford food. The program is open to anyone in the United States, but it is not run by the government.

The Pet Food Stamps organization could eventually expand to offer free or discount veterinary care.

    Shepherds and Sheep
by Thomas Sowell - 6 hrs ago

John Stuart Mill’s classic essay “On Liberty” gives reasons why some people should not be taking over other people’s decisions about their own lives. But Professor Cass Sunstein of Harvard has given reasons to the contrary. He cites research showing “that people make a lot of mistakes, and that those mistakes can prove extremely damaging.”

Professor Sunstein is undoubtedly correct that “people make a lot of mistakes.” Most of us can look back over our own lives and see many mistakes, including some that were very damaging.

What Cass Sunstein does not tell us is what sort of creatures, other than people, are going to override our mistaken decisions for us. That is the key flaw in the theory and agenda of the left.

Implicit in the wide range of efforts on the left to get government to take over more of our decisions for us is the assumption that there is some superior class of people who are either wiser or nobler than the rest of us.

Yes, we all make mistakes. But do governments not make bigger and more catastrophic mistakes?

Think about the First World War, from which nations on both sides ended up worse off than before, after an unprecedented carnage that killed substantial fractions of whole younger generations and left millions starving amid the rubble of war.

Think about the Holocaust, and about other government slaughters of even more millions of innocent men, women and children under Communist governments in the Soviet Union and China.

Even in the United States, government policies in the 1930s led to crops being plowed under, thousands of little pigs being slaughtered and buried, and milk being poured down sewers, at a time when many Americans were suffering from hunger and diseases caused by malnutrition.

The Great Depression of the 1930s, in which millions of people were plunged into poverty in even the most prosperous nations, was needlessly prolonged by government policies now recognized in retrospect as foolish and irresponsible.

One of the key differences between mistakes that we make in our own lives and mistakes made by governments is that bad consequences force us to correct our own mistakes. But government officials cannot admit to making a mistake without jeopardizing their whole careers.

Can you imagine a President of the United States saying to the mothers of America, “I am sorry your sons were killed in a war I never should have gotten us into”?

What is even more relevant to Professor Sunstein’s desire to have our betters tell us how to live our lives, is that so many oppressive and even catastrophic government policies were cheered on by the intelligentsia.

Back in the 1930s, for example, totalitarianism was considered to be “the wave of the future” by much of the intelligentsia, not only in the totalitarian countries themselves but in democratic nations as well.

The Soviet Union was being praised to the skies by such literary luminaries as George Bernard Shaw in Britain and Edmund Wilson in America, while literally millions of people were being systematically starved to death by Stalin and masses of others were being shipped off to slave labor camps.

Even Hitler and Mussolini had their supporters or apologists among intellectuals in the Western democracies, including at one time Lincoln Steffens and W.E.B. Du Bois.

An even larger array of the intellectual elite in the 1930s opposed the efforts of Western democracies to respond to Hitler’s massive military buildup with offsetting military defense buildups to deter Hitler or to defend themselves if deterrence failed. “Disarmament” was the mantra of the day among the intelligentsia, often garnished with the suggestion that the Western democracies should “set an example” for other nations -- as if Nazi Germany or imperial Japan was likely to follow their example.

Too many among today’s intellectual elite see themselves as our shepherds and us as their sheep. Tragically, too many of us are apparently willing to be sheep, in exchange for being taken care of, being relieved of the burdens of adult responsibility and being supplied with “free” stuff paid for by others.
