Now Michelle Obama Wants to Control How You Shop for Groceries

Michelle Obama has been on a quest to change the way Americans eat, like it or not. Her nutritional guidelines for schools has resulted in kids throwing away massive amounts of food, a reduction in school lunch program participation, students, especially athletes, complaining that the food isn’t enough to sustain them during the day, and Special Education programs losing their main fundraising program.
What the First Lady deems appropriate and sufficient for ‘regular Americans’ is a far cry from what her daughters are fed at their private school. The Obama girls eat specially made, five-star meals gourmet meals prepared by a sous chef at school.
Now, Michelle Obama wants to take her nutritional demands from the school system nationwide with major changes being suggested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to nudge Americans to purchase healthier foods. While the “expert panel” had a supposed target of the 47 million Americans, and growing, who are on food stamps, the suggestions will impact everyone who shops at a grocery store. The Washington Free Beacon reported on this attempt by the USDA, using Michelle Obama’s guidelines, to ‘nudge’ consumers on nutritional choices.
In their 80-page report, the USDA said, “Most Americans, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants, do not purchase enough whole grains, dark green and orange vegetables, and legumes, and purchase too many items with excess calories from fats and added sugars.” The report continued, “At the same time, the food retail environment is saturated with food marketing messages, including health and nutrition claims and information, advertisements, and promotions for many unhealthy food items.”
This plan to ‘nudge’ Americans to make healthier food choices includes:
•A points-based system reward for healthy food choices for food stamps recipients redeemable for movie tickets
•Buy one, get one free deals for SNAP participants
•Discount coupons for SNAP participants
•A USDA loyalty card
•Grocery store staff used to push the USDA nudging agenda by acting as ambassadors, steering people to the approved food choices
•High-tech, $30,000 grocery carts, “MyCart grocery cart,” which would help consumers know they have the appropriate amount of government approved food choices. The color-coded cart would have sections with sensors installed to praise the customer when they have a cart filled to its ‘healthy threshold.’ The report cited the cost for changing to the high-tech grocery cart for Safeway, Inc., which has 1,335 stores nationwide, would be $40.05 million.
In addition, grocery stores would guide customers to “healthier food choices through the use of visual displays and other signage, including ceiling banners, refrigerator and freezer door clings, and shelf talkers.” All grocery stores would be encouraged to create “healthy aisles” to make the government approved food choices more prominent and to change these promotions frequently so that consumers don’t become bored or ignore them.

With signs in hand, they marched to the Hennepin County commissioners’ office to ask Peter McLaughlin for help. Most live in his district and feel he can help them help themselves. McLaughlin and the group disagree over the availability of halal or kosher food at food shelves in Minnesota.
He did say they would need to petition all county commissioners for the money to make this food shelf a reality. “The place to deal with this is going to be within the budget … our budget for next year,” McLaughlin said.
To get the food shelf up and running will cost $150,000, but McLaughlin says there is no plan on how much would be needed to sustain it.
The group hopes to present a proposal to the county commissioners during its budget meeting on Nov 13.

We all have sympathy for those who fall on hard times and actually need the help, it happens and that is what a community is for. What we do not like is when people would prefer to STAY on welfare, rather than create their own worth. There’s no excuse unless you are physically disabled and can’t support yourself.

That is why the story of Kiara, a 30-year-old woman with four children, is disturbing on multiple levels. Not only should taxpayers be upset with her blase attitude about abusing the welfare system, they should feel bad for the thousands of Americans like her who are spending their lives wasting their time, instead of living life to the fullest and achieving things.

I have personally known several people who actively sponged off the government, choosing welfare as if it were a carreer option, enough to firmly believe this is not isolated or a singular problem. It has become a cultural norm for some.

30 arrested for food stamp fraud in NY

BRUSHTON, N.Y. - More than 30 people have been nabbed for food stamp fraud in the North Country.
Investigators say over the past couple month's people used their food stamps to get food or alcohol at the Old Time Butcher Block store in Brushton.
Police also say it's not the first time the owner of that store, Dennis Sauve has been charged with allowing such fraud,
Police say more arrests are expected.

Maine Food Stamp Cuts Have Already Impacted More Than 9,000 Residents

Work and volunteer requirements imposed in 2014 have already affected 9,000 Maine residents. Republican Gov. Paul LePage implemented the work requirements in an attempt to remove so-called "freeloaders" from the state’s welfare system.
Starting in October 2014, healthy adults who did not have children were required to work at least 20 hours a week in order to receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for more than three months.
Volunteer work or participation in work-training programs also fulfilled the requirements to receive food stamps. However, recipients only need to volunteer for a minimum of 24 hours per month.
David Sorensen, spokesperson for the Department of Health and Services, told the Associated Press that about 12,000 able-bodied adults without children were in the program before Jan. 1. That number has decreased to 2,680 this year.
Many detractors of the new laws claim that there aren’t enough available positions to meet the work requirements. Barbara Chatterton, who works at the Down East Aids Network, said, “Northern Washington County really has never come out of the recession, so there aren't economic opportunities that there might be in other parts of the state.”
Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew said that the work requirements were meant to incentivize people to start working. “If you're on these programs it means you are living in poverty and so the more that we can help incentive people on that pathway to employment and self-sufficiency the better off they're going to be,” she said.
According to the state, about half of the 12,000 eligible adults should have been affected by the laws. The current numbers have far exceeded the state’s estimates. Additionally, someone who loses food stamp benefits is not eligible for three years.
According to the Food and Nutrition Service branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Maine was one of eight states that declined the federal waiver for 2015. Thirty-seven states were eligible. The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities estimated that 1 million people would lose benefits throughout the U.S.

Couple Arrested For Collecting More Than $100,000 By Fraudulently Buying Food Stamps

A North Carolina couple has been arrested after collecting more than $100,000 by buying food stamp credits for 50 cents on the dollar.
Luz Adriana Walker, 48, and David Christopher Walker, 55, co-own a meat market in Greensboro, North Carolina.
On numerous occasions, the couple gave undercover Guilford County Sheriff’s deputies $200 for $400 worth of electronic food stamp benefits transfers, The Greensboro News & Record reports.
According to arrest warrants, the couple would then take reimbursements for the full value of the stamps, also called SNAP Benefits. It is reported that from Jan. 1, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2014, the Walkers collected more than $100,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The couple was arrested on March 27, and face charges of obtaining property under false pretenses, fraudulently buying and selling food stamps, accessing government computers for fraud, and two counts of conspiracy to commit a felony.
They are both being held at Guilford County jail on $350,000 bail each.

Kansas welfare recipients just got some VERY bad news

Our bloated welfare system–which consists of many individuals who are fully capable of working, but lack any notion of personal responsibility and ambition–is a total drain on our economy.
Many states are looking for ways to crack down on fraud as a means of reducing the burden on tax payers caused by entitlement programs, employing measures like mandatory drug testing, requiring a certain number of hours of work per week, and banning junk food from being purchased with food stamps.
Folks on welfare in Kansas are about to have their easy, breezy life of luxury at tax payer expense rudely interrupted by a new bill to be signed into law by Gov. Sam Brownback. The new law will limit welfare recipients to $25 a day in benefits.
I get the feeling a lot of freeloaders are going to be insanely angry over this.

This bill isn’t designed to hurt the poor, but to make their poverty uncomfortable, which then places a healthy bit of pressure on individuals to go out, get a job, and provide for themselves and their families.
While this might seem like a cold hearted thing to do, in the long run, it’s the greatest gift we can give to those who are broke, but fully capable of working.
It provides a hand up, not a hand out, and forces people to learn personal responsibility and the joys and satisfaction that comes along with taking care of yourself.
It’s not the responsibility of tax payers to forcibly care for the poor. Every able-bodied person is responsible for taking care of themselves, and a bill like the one in Kansas is a measure put in place to protect those who work hard for a living from having their income sucked dry by welfare abusers who use their benefits for personal gain.
Our tax dollars shouldn’t be going to the poor so they can take high class vacations and get tattoos. That’s just not right, and anyone who attempts to justify such behavior lacks a true sense of right and wrong.
Let’s hope other states follow suit and help shrink the size of our welfare system before it does further damage to our economy.

The rush to humiliate the poor

Rick Brattin, a young Republican state representative in Missouri, has come up with an innovative new way to humiliate the poor in his state. Call it the surf-and-turf law.
Brattin has introduced House Bill 813, making it illegal for food-stamp recipients to use their benefits “to purchase cookies, chips, energy drinks, soft drinks, seafood, or steak.”
“I have seen people purchasing filet mignons and crab legs” with electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards, the legislator explained, according to The Post’s Roberto A. Ferdman. “When I can’t afford it on my pay, I don’t want people on the taxpayer’s dime to afford those kinds of foods either.”
Never mind that few can afford filet mignon on a less-than-$7/day food-stamp allotment; they’re more likely to be buying chuck steak or canned tuna. This is less about public policy than about demeaning public-benefit recipients.
The surf-and-turf bill is one of a flurry of new legislative proposals at the state and local level to dehumanize and even criminalize the poor as the country deals with the high-poverty hangover of the Great Recession.
Last week, the Kansas legislature passed House Bill 2258, punishing the poor by limiting their cash withdrawals of welfare benefits to $25 per day and forbidding them to use their benefits “in any retail liquor store, casino, gaming establishment, jewelry store, tattoo parlor, massage parlor, body piercing parlor, spa, nail salon, lingerie shop, tobacco paraphernalia store, vapor cigarette store, psychic or fortune telling business, bail bond company, video arcade, movie theater, swimming pool, cruise ship, theme park, dog or horse racing facility, pari-mutuel facility, or sexually oriented business . . . or in any business or retail establishment where minors under age 18 are not permitted.”
The Kansas legislators must be pleased that they have protected their swimming pools from those nasty welfare recipients. But the gratuitous nature of the law becomes obvious when you consider that it also bans all out-of-state spending of welfare dollars — so the inclusion of a cruise-ship ban is redundant in landlocked Kansas.
The Topeka Capital-Journal quoted a champion of the bill saying “this is about having a great life.” And the law is helping the poor have a “great life” by forbidding Kansas from accepting hardship waivers from the federal government that extend time limits for food-stamp recipients — reminiscent of many states’ refusal to accept an expansion of Medicaid that was fully funded by the federal government.
A profusion of such laws has bubbled up in states across the country in the last few years, imposing punitive new conditions on the poor. Many of these are from Republican states opposed to big government, but not entirely: According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, another state that prohibits welfare funds for cruise ships is true-blue Massachusetts (though it at least touches the ocean.)
In their budget plans in Congress, Republicans propose “devolving” food stamps and other programs to state control by awarding block grants with few strings attached. The states, the thinking goes, are closer to the people and have better ideas about how to reduce caseloads. But recent experience suggests that one strategy for reducing caseloads is to harass recipients:
Some states have been hiking legal fees for poor defendants — in Washington state, the American Civil Liberties Union has found, such obligations average $2,540 per case — and sometimes imprisoning them for their inability to pay. An NPR study last year found that defendants are routinely charged for public defenders, room and board in jail, parole supervision and electronic monitoring devices — items that were once free.
