With proper owners they are wonderful dogs. Giant baby lap-dogs. (they think they're tiny lol)

My Dad raised pit bulls and I can attest they were big babies. They are very protective of their human family - same as many other types of dogs. Heck my English Springer Spaniel was more protective of me than any of our pits. With that said I still hold the following to be true - Bad owners make bad dogs.

I've seen pit bulls fight up close and personal and so therefore am too scared of them now to want to be around them... that being said, I do also agree that bad humans make bad pets.

Bet if Charles Lindberg had a pit bull dog his baby would not have been kidnapped and killed.
My son has a pit bull and he has 2 small kids. As soon as they had their first baby the dog would not leave the first floor where the baby is and go down the basement. He turned himself into a guard dog.
I have mixed feelings on it though. Had to bite my tongue since they are the parents. It has turned out just fine and they kept the dog.

Its actually good that they have a higher tolerance of pain because with little kids they poke and pull on a dog because they dont know better and it usually hurts and scares them.

Owners have a great influence over the behavior of dogs and so do breeders.
There are breeders who either try to breed in or breed out certain traits in certain animals. For example, German Shepards are known for "bad hips", breeders have tried to breed out the problems for them. So the Nanny Pit Bull of a century ago may not be the loving dog of today's pit bull.
Over time, the breed, which was also bred to battle bulls and fight other dogs, picked up a reputation for a nasty nature.
Was this particular pit bull's ancestors bred for their aggression or to be a nanny? My opinion is that this last century, they have been bred more for their aggression.

There are breeders and trainers that train for non-aggression. Sadly they are eclipsed by the bad press that abounds everytime the dogs trained to fight, maul, and kill act on the bad behavior that has been taught and trained into them by vicious owners.
