Tests shed light on condition of Bret Michaels
By Derrik J. Lang, Ap Entertainment Writer Tue Apr 27, 8:36 pm ET

LOS ANGELES – An already ailing Bret Michaels has been diagnosed with another medical malady. After suffering a brain hemorrhage last week, the audacious 47-year-old glam-rock reality TV star has developed a side effect that causes seizures, according to a statement posted Tuesday on the former Poison frontman's website.

The condition, called hyponatremia, stems from a lack of sodium. The statement did not indicate if Michaels had actually suffered any seizures.

Michaels was conscious and in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit of an undisclosed hospital.

The statement said he was remaining positive and responding well to tests and treatments. "Even though today was a minor setback, doctors remain hopeful for a full recovery and plan to release more specific information next Monday," it said.

Michaels, a contestant on "The Celebrity Apprentice," suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which causes bleeding in the fluid-filled spaces around the base of the brain. He was rushed to the hospital on Friday with a severe headache. "Doctors state Michaels is very lucky as his condition could have been fatal," according to the statement, which was also provided by Michaels' New York-based publicist Joann Mignano.

"With further testing and rehabilitation, they are hopeful that Bret will gradually improve as the blood surrounding the brain dissolves and is reabsorbed into his system, which can be a very painful recovery and take several weeks to months," the statement said.

Michaels was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 6. He had an emergency appendectomy April 12 after complaining of stomach pains before he was scheduled to perform in San Antonio.

A statement posted on his website after the surgery said it had "taken its toll," but doctors expected him to make a full recovery.

On Donald Trump's competitive reality show, "The Celebrity Apprentice," Michaels has served as one of the season's most outspoken celebrities and has so far avoided being fired in the boardroom.

Before joining the show, Michaels starred in VH1's lusty reality dating series "Rock of Love" for three seasons.

I've never heard of having seizures from a lack of sodium. I hope they can get it under control and he recovers from the hemorrhage.

Doctor: Bret Michaels released from hospital
By Jonathan J. Cooper, Associated Press Writer Tue May 4, 5:48 pm ET

PHOENIX – Poison frontman Bret Michaels has been released from a Phoenix hospital and is expected to make a full recovery after suffering a brain hemorrhage last month, his doctor said Tuesday.

Dr. Joseph Zabramski, chief of cerebrovascular surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, said he recommended that Michaels wait at least four to six weeks before resuming normal activity. He declined to say when Michaels could resume touring. Doctors will examine Michaels every two weeks until he's recovered.

"This produces a great deal of stress on the body," he said. "This is like being involved in an accident from inside."

Zabramski said Michaels is fully conscious and aware and talking fine, but he has back spasms and headaches when he tries to walk. He could continue getting back pain and headaches, but Zabramski doesn't expect any other long-term effects. He wouldn't say when Michaels was released or whether he was sent home or to a rehabilitation facility.

The 47-year-old contestant on "The Celebrity Apprentice" is receiving therapy and will probably continue to suffer from severe pain for another seven to 10 days as blood pooled under his brain dissolves. Michaels is a Type 1 diabetic, which limits the available options to ease discomfort.

Michaels' was admitted into the hospital April 22 after suffering a severe headache. He was diagnosed with a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which causes bleeding in the fluid-filled spaces around the base of the brain.

Two tests showed that Michaels did not suffer an aneurysm, so doctors are unsure what caused his condition. They did not perform surgery or other invasive procedures, but they plan a third test to check again for an aneurysm, a bulge in a weak part of a blood vessel that makes it more likely to have a second hemorrhage.

It is unlikely that Michaels' hemorrhage is related to an appendectomy conducted on April 12 or to Michaels being hit in the face by a descending set piece at last year's Tony Awards, a mishap that left the rocker with a broken nose and a busted lip. Hard hits to the head can cause hemorrhages, but not almost a year after the incident, Zabramski said.

Michaels, who filmed most of NBC's "The Celebrity Apprentice" last fall, is one of five remaining stars vying to win Donald Trump's business-themed reality TV competition. The other contenders are celebrity chef Curtis Stone, reality TV diva Sharon Osbourne, former WWE wrestler Maria Kanellis, pop singer Cyndi Lauper and actress Holly Robinson Peete.

If he avoids being fired by Trump in upcoming episodes, Michaels' prognosis means he could possibly attend "The Celebrity Apprentice" finale May 23 at New York University's Skirball Center. The finale features the last two contestants performing a final task, typically organizing a charity event, then debating each other live in front of Trump.

Michaels' representatives previously announced that his tour appearances scheduled through May 21 have been postponed, but that his other concert dates through October, including a summer tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd, are going ahead as scheduled.

Michaels already has ample experience at staging comebacks. After glam-rock was edged out in the 1990s, the "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" singer found fame again on reality TV, starring as a judge on USA's singing contest "Nashville Star" in 2005, then as the bad-boy bachelor looking for lust on VH1's tawdry dating show "Rock of Love" from 2007 to 2009.

Michaels has reason to party after `Apprentice'
By Lynn Elber, Ap Television Writer Mon May 24, 2:29 am ET

Bret Michaels made it to the finish line Sunday of "The Celebrity Apprentice" despite life-threatening illness and was rewarded with victory and $250,000 for charity.

"You've done an amazing job in every single way," Donald Trump said before announcing his choice on a live segment of NBC's reality show. "A little flaky, but that's OK. ... You've also proven ... to be very brave. I appreciate that."

The other finalist, actress Holly Robinson Peete, has been "amazing," Trump said, and then rendered his decision.

"Holly, I have to tell you, we all love you. And Brett, I have to tell you — you're hired," Trump pronounced, drawing a lusty "whoop" from Michaels.

Michaels' appearance on the finale, which included live and taped segments, had been in question after he suffered a brain hemorrhage in April and was hospitalized again recently after suffering what doctors called a warning stroke. He faces surgery for a hole in his heart.

Trump didn't downplay the drama involving Michaels' health, asking the 47-year-old rock star of Poison fame if he was risking his life by coming on the finale against his doctors' advice.

"Lately it seems like me just standing me up is risking my life," Michaels replied, lightly, adding that it was worth the risk and he "came to win." He walked haltingly and with a slight limp.

His presence brought a moment of honest reality to a carefully constructed TV genre.

After the show, Michaels said he'd been through a rough period but added, "I've got to be honest. I feel great right now."

"You have no idea how bad I want to cut loose and party, and there's about eight texts (messages) saying, `Do not drink, do not party,'" he said. "The fact that I won ... and to just hang out with my friends, that's a party enough."

During the broadcast, Robinson Peete, 45, said she and Michaels had become close during the series and there would be none of last season's animosity — a reference to finale fireworks between winner Joan Rivers and runner-up Annie Duke.

Robinson Peete teared up when she and Michaels took the stage before a studio audience in New York.

"Holly, that's so beautiful. You're crying," Trump observed.

"Well, I mean, who in America isn't?" she replied. Trump said that he'd never cried for his opponent.

"My 5-year-old son woke up this morning and said, 'Mom, I love you, but I'm kinda pulling for Bret.' How do you beat that?" Robinson Peete responded.

Both celebrities, who were playing to raise money for their favored causes, came out on top. Michaels, who as a child was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, claimed the winner's prize for the American Diabetes Association, and Peete learned that her charitable group would receive a matching amount.

Trump said the maker of Snapple beverages had agreed to give a matching $250,000 to HollyRod Foundation, whose mission is to support families who have a loved one with a serious medical condition. The actress has a son diagnosed as autistic.

The final challenge for "The Celebrity Apprentice" had required Michaels and Robinson Peete to each create a new flavor of Snapple and a marketing campaign for the soft drinks. Their versions are being sold for a limited period and highlight their causes.

This season of "Celebrity Apprentice" began airing in March with 14 contestants, each competing in business-oriented tasks around Manhattan to raise money for and publicize their favorite causes.
