    Hi .
everyone can post medical information in here, until other use there.

    Benefits of zinc
    Zinc for Skin

Zinc is one element that is essential for healthy skin. In addition, to wound healing, zinc acts as an astringent and may help in the treatment of acne among other benefits.

    Wound Healing

One benefit of zinc for skin is in the area of wound healing. Oral zinc supplements help heal bed sores, skin ulcers, cold sores, canker sores, surgical incisions, burns, and a variety of other skin irritations. Topical treatments are also used for wound healing.

Zinc is a mineral that the body requires for the synthesis of collagen, which is a requirement for the healing of skin wounds. Zinc is also a component in the proper functioning of enzymes that are required by the body to repair skin wounds.

    Mild Astringent

The benefit of zinc as a mild astringent is well noted. An astringent is a chemical substance that shrinks, constricts, or tightens body tissues.

Zinc oxide has this mild astringent property. It acts as a skin-drying agent and can act as a skin anti-inflammatory. Zinc oxide also helps sooth the skin from itching, rashes, and moist skin conditions such as diaper rash.

    Dermatitis Herpetiformis

Dermatitis herpetiformis is a chronic disease of the skin. It is characterized by the presence of very itchy hives on the skin and a burning or stinging sensation on the skin. In addition, blister-like patches of skin may be present on the elbows, knees, and buttocks. There is some evidence that improper absorption of zinc may contribute to this skin care problem.

    Acne

Another often stated benefit of zinc is in the treatment and prevention of acne. Zinc in the form of zinc gluconate or zinc sulfate is thought to help heal acne blemishes, reduce inflammation caused by acne, and reduce androgenic hormonal effects on skin that contribute to acne breakouts or in other words help regulate the skin’s oil gland activity.

Recently, the benefit of zinc in treating acne has been questioned. Zinc oxide, zinc stearate, and zinc sulfide apparently have no established effectiveness in acne treatment as stated by an advisory panel of the United States Food and Drug Administration.

    Dandruff

A benefit of zinc is in the treatment of dandruff. Zinc pyrithione is often found in dandruff shampoos and is effective in helping to relieve this skin problem. A zinc supplement (under the advice of a physician) may also play a role in treating and preventing dandruff.

    Other

Another benefit of zinc for proper skin care is that it is a natural insect repellent and a natural sunscreen (zinc oxide effectively blocks the sun’s ultraviolet rays). It helps in the treatment of poison ivy, blisters, and gum disease. Zinc also plays a role in stimulating the transport of vitamin A from the liver to the skin.

Some preliminary studies have shown that zinc sulfate can be an effective treatment for contact dermatitis. More studies are underway to confirm the actual benefit of zinc for this skin care problem.

    Zinc for Health

In addition to the skin benefits, zinc also plays a part in many important body functions.

    Strengthens the Immune System

Zinc plays a role in bolstering the immune system by assisting in the development and activation of certain white blood cells. Therefore, it helps protect the body from infections, viruses, and potentially some cancers. A lack of zinc leads to a weakened immune system.

    Eating Disorders

Another benefit of zinc is in the treatment of eating disorders. A zinc deficiency has been linked to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia since it contributes to loss of appetite. With zinc supplements to replace the missing zinc, a person’s appetite can be restored resulting in weight gain and overall good progress with these types of disorders.

Related to this is the fact that zinc plays a role in the proper functioning of the taste and smell functions in humans, which are linked to appetite.

    Pregnancy

Pregnant and breast-feeding women require extra zinc in their diets. Zinc is important in the cell division and generation process. During pregnancy, there is a significant amount of cell growth occurring as the fetus develops. Women that have adequate amounts of zinc in their diets while pregnant will help to reduce complications such as poor fetus development and premature births.

For breast-feeding mothers, in the first few months, breast milk contains substantial quantities of zinc and the mother needs to intake more zinc to replenish the supply for her own well-being and for the quality of the breast milk.

Overall, the benefit of zinc is to support normal development and growth of the human body during and after pregnancy.

    Prostate Health

A benefit of zinc for men is linked to prostate health. Zinc can aid in fighting the inflammation and infection of the prostate gland.

Zinc is required by the body to manufacture testosterone and without sufficient amounts of this hormone, a man may suffer from a low sperm count, low sex drive, as well as other hormone related problems. Zinc also plays a role in sperm mobility and this mineral is being experimented with to examine whether it would be a useful therapy for male infertility.

    Fighting the Common Cold

A controversial benefit of zinc is its effectiveness in treating the common cold. Some claim that sucking on zinc gluconate lozenges can help fight a cold and relieve cold symptoms. Although some studies indicate that there may be some benefit in reducing the amount of time colds last and decreasing the severity of symptoms, further research is required in order to establish a definite link.

    Brain Booster

Some tests have shown that zinc enhances memory and thinking. In addition, for individuals who have suffered head injuries that involve memory loss, zinc supplementation has contributed to recovery.

    Other

There is evidence that lack of zinc in the diet leads to deteriorating vision as individuals get older.

Adequate quantities of zinc in the diet helps maintain muscles in good health and contributes to their proper growth, strength, and endurance.

Because it is involved in stimulating the activity of many enzymes, zinc plays a role in the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and energy.

    Disadvantages of stress
The next time you begin losing large amounts of hair, think about the role of stress and hair loss. To illustrate the point, here is a real life story about stress and hair loss.

Elaine was always an attractive girl. While in college, she took on a job to help make ends meet. She studied hard and worked even harder. To make matters worse, she was also involved in a very strenuous relationship with a man that lasted for a year and a half. Elaine was overworked, over stressed and heartbroken. Stress was becoming more and more prevalent in Elaine's life. This combination eventually took a toll on her good looks, leaving her grumpy looking. Her friends began to comment on her haggard appearance. Elaine's skin became constantly dry and dull. She always felt sluggish and slow. Eventually, Elaine began to notice hair on her pillow when she woke up each morning, Stress was causing hair loss for Elaine and taking its toll on her body. It was then that she realized how much stress was affecting her life and looks. Alarmed and anxious, Elaine decided it would be best to consult a hair specialist to help her solve her problem. The specialist advised Elaine to reevaluate her life and try to be more positive. She told Elaine she needed to eliminate anything in her life that was causing her too much stress. She needed to remove herself from anything causing her pain and anguish if she wanted the hair loss to stop. Elaine took the specialist's advice and straightened out her life. She quit her part-time job to focus on school alone. She reconnected herself with friends and began to socialize again. This decision to have a happier, simpler life eventually helped her to become more physically fit, resulting in her to become the attractive girl she once was.

The Oxford dictionary defines stress as "a demand upon physical or mental energy.' However, stress, as most people see it, is an above average demand of our energy. This demand is usually very hard to deal with. Stress puts demands on people to perform well above their capacity. This demand is very difficult to maintain without some form of relief. Despite the negative perception, stress is an everyday occurrence that affects most people at some point in their life. Following are other definitions of stress:

-- Stress is supposedly a recent phenomenon and is everywhere we turn to.
-- Stress does not feel good and cannot be experienced in pleasant situations.
-- Stress can be achieved when our problems go out of control.
-- Stress and change are related.

As demonstrated in Elaine's story, stress can sometimes lead to hair loss. The human body has ways of alerting us of problems such as stress. If handled properly, stress can be managed and not lead to hair loss or other appearance related problems.

The condition of a person's hair can tell you a lot about stress levels in their lives. Happiness and serenity in a person's life will be reflected by healthy looking, shiny hair. However, those with dry, lifeless, poor hair are likely encountering a depressing situation and are struggling to adapt.

Hair loss induced by stress usually occurs after severe stress, such as surgery or illness. This is referred to telogen effluvium and may take as long as six to twelve months to reverse.

Revivogen is an anti-DHT hair loss treatment formulated by board certified Dermatologist Dr. Alex Khadavi, M.D., which attacks the root causes of male and Female Hair Loss

Thanks, I think we will all need to have this info with our healthcare now. We sure won't get in to see a doctor very soon and things can get worse when one waits.

I bet stores like Whole Foods do very well in the future. I'm thinking of getting some stock in them.

    Medical Massage

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_massage

Medical Massage is outcome-based massage. It is primarily the application of specific treatment protocols targeted to the specific problem(s) the patient presents with physician's diagnosis and administered after a thorough assessment/evaluation by the medical massage therapist.

Until 1997 "Medical Massage" was referred to as "Massage Therapy". Ever since 1997 the term "medical massage" has been gaining in popularity. The term was created in america by Pete Spairring Owner of Cedar River Medical Massage(1997), (CedarRiverMedicalMassage.com)[citation needed]. He created the term with the intent of lifting massage therapy to a higher standard and improve outcomes for patients. He also had the intent of making it very easy for patients to identify that a business did massage as a treatment, and not just for relaxation. Relaxation massage does have many medical benefits but should not be confused with medical massage unless it is prescribed for stress relief. Until a specific symptom is treated with a specific set of procedures to bring about a specific outcome then massage it is not "medical massage".

The American Medical Massage Association (1998) and The United States Medical Massage Association (1999)came on the scene with similar goals of lifting the professions to higher standards and intern giving patients a better outcome. The AMMA has done a great job of working with the standard medical comunity and bringing massage therapy into the mainstream they have done this through a board of advisors that include massage therapists, physicians, chiropractors etc...

The term medical massage has grown in popularity because of its unique ability to bring massage therapy into the mainstream and present massage therapy in a positive view to doctors. More good massage therapists are raising their education level and integrating the term medical massage into their routines daily. A massage therapist can bill for a massage as long as they are a licensed massage therapist and are able to show improvement in a condition of a patient/client. Though in many states insurance companies still do not recognize their training and will not reimburse the therapist. The term medical massage was birthed out of:

the publics need for highly skilled, hands-on therapists in treating those with injuries and chronic pain,

the present explosion of information in the injury-rehabilitation field which began with the ground-breaking work of Dr. Janet G Travell (1901–1997,)[1] and

the benefit patients receive when medical massage therapists and doctors work together,

there is now a new National Certification[2] for medical massage therapists in the United States.

Medical massage is useful in addressing conditions such as:

    Carpal Tunnel syndrome
    Sciatica
    Piriformis Syndrome
    Rotator cuff injuries
    Migraines/headaches
    Pain associated with pregnancy
    Constipation
    Range of motion issues
    Fibromyalgia
    Back and Neck pain
Plantar Fasciitis (involving pain in the foot)
Repetitive use injuries such as those listed and Tennis elbow, Golfer's elbow
    TMJ
    Pain associated with restricted fascia
    Pain associated with postural imbalances
    Muscle cramps
    Restless Legs Syndrome
    Sports injuries
    Work Injuries
    Auto Injuries
    Edema (swelling)
Injuries sustained in traumas such as falls or automobile accidents
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (numbness/tingling in hands/arms)
Pain associated with bulged or injured spinal disks (medical massage cannot 'fix' the disk, but can help alleviate much of the pain associated with the injury).

Though national certification exists for medical massage therapists, currently there is no licensures for medical massage therapists in any state, as there is in many states for general massage therapists. Though any therapist can bill for massage treatment those with national certifcation have much less problems getting paid by the insurance cariers. Any massage therapist can claim to be a medical massage therapist, The public should look at the training that a therapist has and see that they have been trained to treat the specific type of injury that they have. Recently in Washington State the Department of Labor and Injury reduced their reimbursment rate by 25% because their research found there were some massage therapist performing relaxing massages and billing them as treatment.

    Chocolate could reduce heart risk

Maria Cheng, Ap Medical Writer – 2 hrs 46 mins ago

LONDON – The Easter Bunny might lower your chances of having a heart problem. According to a new study, small doses of chocolate every day could decrease your risk of having a heart attack or stroke by nearly 40 percent.

German researchers followed nearly 20,000 people over eight years, sending them several questionnaires about their diet and exercise habits.

They found people who had an average of six grams of chocolate per day — or about one square of a chocolate bar — had a 39 percent lower risk of either a heart attack or stroke. The study is scheduled to be published Wednesday in the European Heart Journal.

Previous studies have suggested dark chocolate in small amounts could be good for you, but this is the first study to track its effects over such a long period of time. Experts think the flavonols contained in chocolate are responsible. Flavonols, also found in vegetables and red wine, help the muscles in blood vessels widen, which leads to a drop in blood pressure.

"It's a bit too early to come up with recommendations that people should eat more chocolate, but if people replace sugar or high-fat snacks with a little piece of dark chocolate, that might help," said Brian Buijsse, a nutritional epidemiologist at the German Institute of Human Nutrition in Nuthetal, Germany, the study's lead author.

The people tracked by Buijsse and colleagues had no history of heart problems, had similar habits for risk factors like smoking and exercise, and did not vary widely in their Body Mass Index.

Since the study only observed people and did not give them chocolate directly to test what its effects were, experts said more research was needed to determine the candy's exact impact on the body. The study was paid for by the German government and the European Union.

Doctors also warned that eating large amounts of chocolate could lead to weight gain, a major risk factor for heart problems and strokes.

"This is not a prescription to eat more chocolate," said Dr. Robert Eckel, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado and a past president of the American Heart Association. He was not linked to the study. "If we all had (a small amount) of chocolate every day for the rest of our lives, we would all gain a few pounds."

Eckel said it was amazing to find such a small amount of chocolate could have such a protective effect, but that more studies needed to be done to confirm its conclusions.

Alice Lichtenstein, a nutritionist at Tufts University School of Medicine, said it was difficult to link the reduction in heart disease and stroke risk to the chocolate alone, since there may have been other differences between the study participants.

"The relationship between chocolate and good health outcomes is still uncertain," she said. "If somebody really enjoys eating chocolate, then they should have a small amount of that and just really enjoy it," she said.

    ooh yes! more chocolate
I think Julia Child mentioned eating chocolate every day - she also probably ate fairly rich, delicious sauces with butter and eggs and other wonderful foods. In moderation, of course. She certainly lived a long, full life.
you are talking my language. Hope the Easter Bunny brings me a basket of dark chocolate.
Or they could simply isolate Flavonols and, like niacin, put them into breads.
Chocolate also promotes romance. My wife loves chocolate, and it's pretty easy to get her "in the mood" with a candy bar. If you don't believe ME, you can ask our kids - Snickers and Twix...
Finally, some good news I can use!
