CUNY college offers classes for undocumented immigrants
Scary!
http://www.lohud.com/article/2010050...ted-immigrants
"NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City college has launched a pilot program that allows undocumented Mexican restaurant workers to take classes.
New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn offers 15-week hospitality management training classes combined with English and math, the Daily News reported. Students will end up with a City Tech certificate that's also recognized in Mexico.
City University of New York Vice Chancellor Jay Hershenson said the program aims to head off an "educational catastrophe" among Mexican immigrants.
CUNY said the program is funded by a $100,000 grant from the Mexican government."
MY COMMENT: I can only assume that this $100000 is part of the $25 billion or so that is sent yearly to Mexico from people who are working (legally and illegally) in the US
CUNY gets money from the state and city governments which really means that the taxpayers whether they want to or not give money to this college and what's even scarier

"Q. I'm here illegally. What are the City University of New York tuition rules that apply to me?
Baruch College accepted me to complete my bachelor's degree. I can't afford the fees unless I qualify for resident (in-state) tuition.
I have a New York State Graduate Equivalency Diploma. I studied on my own and passed the exam.
Melina, Queens
A. With a new school year approaching, now is a good time to review New York State tuition rules. The way the law is being interpreted, if you meet the qualifications, it is irrelevant where and how you studied for your GED, as long as it is a New York State-issued GED.
Under a New York State law passed in 2002 and signed by Gov. George Pataki, undocumented students attending the City University of New York's 19 campuses pay the same low tuition paid by U.S. citizens and permanent residents - if they meet certain conditions.
A student qualifies for in-state tuition at CUNY if he or she: a) was enrolled in CUNY for the fall 2001 semester, and qualified for in-state tuition at that time; b) attended a New York State high school for two or more years, graduated, and applied to attend CUNY within five years of receiving a high school diploma at a New York State high school; or c) received a New York State Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED), and applied to attend CUNY within five years of receiving the GED.
To get the in-state tuition rate, undocumented immigrants must file an affidavit stating that they have applied to legalize their status, OR that they will apply to do so when eligible.
Undocumented students may even qualify for financial assistance. Undocumented students qualify for the Peter F. Vallone Academic Scholarship Program, financed by the City of New York. That program awards scholarships to full-time students who graduate from a New York City high school with at least a B average who enroll in CUNY within one year of graduation.
For information about studying at CUNY, call (800) CUNY-YES, or visit www.cuny.edu.

WHAT??!!??
OM Freakin GOD! Illegal residents can qualify for financial aid for college? Like those loans will ever be repaid.
My son has $85,000 in student loans & these people who never paid into the system will apparently get a free ride. My son has worked since he was 16 & will soon turn 24.
So not right.

How about a "class" to teach them how to become legal immigrants and fully contributing memebers of society ?? Meanwhile, ICE should be requesting a copy of their enrollment lists ...

Why don't they offer this to low income american citizens. It sure pays to be an illegal alien in America thats for sure. They get better benefits than legaj citizens. This is just going to encourage more illegal aliens to come now.

They should offer this to ALL legal citizens, irregardless of income level, BEFORE they offer it to any ILLEGAL trespasser. I don't think it should be offered to ILLEGALS at all.

NY Will Actively Subvert Immigration Laws
http://legalinsurrection.blogspot.co...migration.html
One of the arguments raised against the Arizona immigration law (in addition to it being the modern incarnation of Nazism) was that states had no authority under the U.S. Constitution to conduct their own immigration policies.
So I presume we will hear howls of constitutional outrage against New York Governor David Paterson, who has announced that New York will actively seek to subvert the federal immigration laws by creating special pardon panels to expunge criminal records for legal aliens to help them avoid deportation proceedings.
As reported by The NY Times: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/20...nforcement/?hp
In a major rebuke of federal immigration policy, Gov. David A. Paterson announced on Monday that he would create a special pardon panel to review cases involving legal immigrants who are at risk of deportation for minor or old convictions.
Mr. Paterson’s move will give many immigrants facing deportation renewed hope and places the governor into the middle of the country’s immigration debate.
The announcement comes as the federal government has taken an increasingly hard line in its interpretation of existing immigration law, leaving a growing number of legal immigrants who have criminal records facin g deportation. “Some of our immigration laws, particularly with respect to deportation, are embarrassingly and wrongly inflexible,” Mr. Paterson said in a speech on Monday at an annual gathering of the state’s top judges.
The difference between New York and Arizona on immigration is that New York actively subverts federal law, while Arizona adheres to federal law; New York is conducting its own immigration policy while Arizona is not.
Yet Arizona government officials are called lawless Nazis and racists, while Paterson gets a pass.
Which proves, once again, that the accusations of Nazism and racism were cover to make enforcement of the immigration laws more difficult.
One of the commenters seeks to justify Paterson's actions on the ground that the federal laws are unjust. But you can't have it both ways, claiming that states cannot conduct their own immigration policy when you don't like the result, but can when you like the result. Because if that is the standard, then the Arizona law should be fine because it is supported by 60% of the U.S. population versus 36% who oppose it. http://hotair.com/archives/2010/05/0...n-law-over-60/

legal immigrants who have criminal records facin g deportation
I'd like to know what criminal records he wants to pardon......jay walking? parking tickets?....fine.....if it's drugs, murder, theft, etc. the man has lost his mind and is an ass.
**Note - he wants to 'help' LEGAL, not ILLEGAL, immigrants.**
For me, there's no comparison with Arizona on that....other than the legal sense of state vs. fed law.

Paterson Seeks Immigration Reform
May
3
In the midst of the fight over immigration, Gov. David Paterson today said he’s creating a panel that will help him review pardon applications of legal immigrants who can face deportation because of criminal convictions.
He said the panel will make recommendations to the governor’s office involving potential pardons based on the circumstances of each case.
Paterson said the announcement isn’t a response to the immigration fight in Arizona, but he said it does respond to the country’s need to reform its immigration policies.
“It’s a method that we are applying today that we hope in some way will set an example for how other states might consider softening the blow for people who are caught up in this web of the national immigration laws,” Paterson said.
The governor was slated to be on MSNBC this afternoon to discuss the policy and the Times Square car bomb incident. He’s also scheduled to appear on CNN’s Larry King Live tonight at 9 p.m.
Speaking at Law Day at the state Court of Appeals, Paterson cited his pardon earlier this year of Quig Hong Wu, who was about to deported after he disclosed while he was seeking citizenship that he had a criminal record for robbery as a teenager. But Paterson said the man turned his life around, and it would be unfair to deport him.
“If we think that these individuals deserve and have earned the opportunity to stay in this country and try to become citizens, we will grant those pardons,” Paterson said.
MY COMMENT: We have a President who denigrates the AZ law that upholds the federal law and in NY we have a governor who pooh poohs the federal law. Sure sounds like we have 'leaders' in this country who think they and their thoughts are above federal law. So if everyone pooh poohs the laws, then we will have a country of total chaos. Where is the respect for the law? What about the people who have been law abiding citizens?
I have a old new law or a new old law....let's put away all law breakers including those who have been elected or appointed to uphold the laws. They can wear prison wear but will no longer be allowed to wear their crowns!

So was he here legally at the time? (working permit, resident alien, etc.) If he was not here legally at the time (or at any time) he should be/should have been DEPORTED.
And what were the circumstances of the robbery? Anyone hurt?
