Then what are they looking for?

Oh well if it's a choice between sugary soft drinks or treating a stranger's pneumonia then yea, I want my caffeine.
I know you didn't mean it to sound like that. However, sadly, some people really do mean it that way.
Have you ever tried to get private health insurance? You give these "options" as if they are easy peasy wonderful solutions. We were without health insurance for 6 months after DH got back from Iraq. The VA cut us off the moment he was released. We could have gotten COBRA for $1500/month or private insurance for even more. Believe me, I called everyone everywhere, including USAA where we insure our home and cars, and did several online comparisons of rate quotes. Since DH had no job to come home to (his company laid him off when they realized he'd be activated so they wouldn't have to hold his job) we had no income. The military already took a huge hit on our finances. Prior to him going to Iraq we made 6 figures. While he was there we were on WIC. So it's not like I could use our savings either as that was depleted during the 14 months of military pay at about a 60% pay cut. Of course, it was still too high to get medicaid so we were just screwed. Way to support the troops America!
There are also Ferrari's out there but for someone with a low or middle class income they are just as unrealistic an expense as health care. Then you have the whole preexisting conditions clause. DS2 has restrictive airways. Basically it means he gets asthma when he gets sick. I fought tooth and nail against allowing any doctor to officially say asthma in any of his charts because I knew that if DH changed jobs DS2 could be screwed out of insurance for that for a year or more. People with diabetes, cancer, asthma, heart conditions, high blood pressure, etc are all basically screwed if they lose their health insurance because odds are the next company will deny their preexisting conditions.
I just don't understand how people who claim to be compassionate conservatives or in favor of helping the innocent can be just fine and dandy with all of that. It should go against everything they stand for. Instead, it leaves the impression that everything they stand for starts with money and eventually works it's way down to compassion for their fellow man.
What happen to personal responsibility ? I think we should create medical plans one can choose. I think these should be created by tax incentives to insurance companies. I personally don't want the goverment involved with my medical care. If the goverment takes over all over medical care, we will all be taxed up the A$$. Look at medicade and medicare. Both have so much fraud.
There are plans out there that cover the really high medical expenses.
However you will have to pay for office visits until you reach the high deductible. It works out well for people who don't see the doctor very much.
People need to be realistic. If you want a plan that will pay for everything you will have to pay a lot more. If you are a person that runs to the doctor every time you get a cold or sneeze then you are better of with a more expensive insurance plan.
OK, I will say this. I have mixed feelings about health care. I do recognize the need for reform. Yes there are insurance plans out there but many can not afford them. I have stated this before but we currently have private insurance and pay $1,410 w/dental for our healthy family of five. I'm sure there are many that can't afford premiums like that. It is sad that people can't afford to see a dr. or lose everything they have ever worked for due to one major health crisis.
On the other hand, the govt has a really lousy track record w/healthcare (medicare, va, etc.). I'm also not to keen on subsidizing yet something else out of my $$. But I would rather my $$ go to keeping Americans healthy than half of the other crap the govt wastes my $$ on.
So I am hoping for the best. A miracle of sorts I guess.
Oh yeah, forgot to comment on the op. LOL It really doesn't matter if it's called a tax increase or not, the effect is the same. I also don't like the idea of the govt requiring people to be insured esp. if it will cause a hardship to them. I know they say it will be income based, etc but we all know how well some of the current incomebased programs work(yes I'm being sarcastic, LOL).I really hope they don't try to rush something thru. Much better to take their time and do it right.
Now back to the op, I thought it was ridiculous of obama to be arguing the definition of the word. Does he really think we are that stupid that we can't see what's going on?
Put insurance on the open market. Make them compete for our dollars, the cost of insurance will come down just like any other commodity in the free market.
There is already mega corruption in health care. Medicare charging two and three times for the same procedure, instead of once. If they cleaned up the corruption they would have money left over for those who are poor. So I know, lets let government take over more so we will get more corruption that can't be caught by the public.
People do want those who need care to get it but this is the wrong way to go about it. It just lines politicians pockets.
For those who think they are not paying enough in taxes, the government will always take donations if you want to pay more.
