    Obama on break?
    By Chris Cillizza The Fast Fix – Thu, Aug 18, 2011

    President Obama's annual vacation to Martha's vineyard is already under fire, and he's barely unpacked. Is it fair for the commander in chief to relax when the country is facing big problems?

    President Obama leaves for a 10-day vacation to Martha's Vineyard today, a trip that has already stirred controversy. Republicans have criticized Obama not only for going on vacation at a time of economic turmoil but also choosing the ritzy island off of Cape Cod as his destination. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has slammed Obama for "vacationing in Martha's Vineyard" rather than working to create jobs out in the country.

    Obama seems unconcerned about the barbs thrown his way. He's been criticized for vacationing in Martha's Vineyard in each of the last two summers without any long-term political consequences. Of course, the ongoing struggles of the American economy and the yo-yoing stock market make the optics of a trip to Martha's Vineyard a bit more complicated.

    Back in 1995, then President Bill Clinton decided not to go to his usual vacation spot on Martha's Vineyard and instead traveled to Wyoming for five days. After he won re-election in 1996, Clinton started going back to the Vineyard.

    Obama has no such plans. But expect him and his family to keep a low profile during their vacation, avoiding lots of public photo ops that Republicans can use to paint him as out of touch with average Americans.

    Judging by his actions in his first term I really do believe that he thinks the ends justifies the means. He seems to be hell bent on enforcing his views of social equality no matter the economic consequences to America. I guess that happens when the world give you a Nobel peace prize for good intentions.

    ~~~
    He used AirForceOne more than any other president, got a whole new fleet of presidential cars, a new 1.5 M presidential tour bus, and now TEN DAYS at the Vinyard during a severe crisis? The guy sure knows how to SPEND, SPEND, SPEND
    ~~~

    Here you go people - is this a leader you want to take care of your country after his VACATION. IN THIS CRISIS THIS COUNTRY IS GOING THRU. is iti really is it. Is this what you want - for a congress who couldnt find time to pass a budget plan for this country but found time to take a FIVE week vacation ? is it really?

    ~~~
    first you have to pass the bill before you can know whats all in the bill.
    ~~~

    Who the heck is he to tell us to conserve when he's still living it up at our expenses!What ?

    Vacationing Obama attends friend's 'social event'
    By DARLENE SUPERVILLE - Associated Press | AP – Sat, Aug 20, 2011

    OAK BLUFFS, Mass. (AP) — President Barack Obama has dropped in on his friend and former law school professor, Charles Ogletree, as he continues his Martha's Vineyard vacation. The president spent most of Saturday at his rented compound on the island. But in the early evening, he was driven by motorcade to Ogletree's home in Oak Bluffs for what the White House called a "social event." Aides declined to provide details of the evening, which came a day after Ogletree helped sponsor a Democratic fundraiser at nearby Union Chapel.

    Ogletree is a Harvard Law School professor and authority on race and politics who became Obama's mentor during his time at the school. Former students also include first lady Michelle Obama. She was not attending the event, but White House adviser Valerie Jarrett was.

    Obama in 2006: As president ‘vacations, leisure is gone’ VIDEO at the link ...
    Published: 11:48 PM 09/18/2012

    President Barack Obama has received ample criticism for the first family’s numerous expensive vacations and his frequent golf outings. Based on old C-SPAN footage of Obama, however, it would seem that the president might have once agreed with his critics.

    In an October 20, 2006 C-SPAN interview with New York Times columnist Bob Herbert about his memoir “The Audacity of Hope,” then-Senator Obama explained, in a discussion about presidential aspirations, that presidents must forgo vacations and leisure in order to work for the American people.

    “Essentially the bargain that any president, I think, strikes with the American people is: ‘you give me this office and in turn my fears, doubts, insecurities, foibles, need for sleep, family life, vacations, leisure is gone. I am giving myself to you.’ And the American people should have no patience for whatever is going through your head because you’ve got a job to do,” Obama says in the video.

    “And so how I think about it is that you don’t make that decision unless you are prepared to make that sacrifice, that trade off, that bargain and I think that what’s difficult and important for somebody like myself who has a wonderful forbearing wife and two gorgeous young children is that they end up having to make some of those sacrifices with you,” he continued. “And that is a profound decision that you don’t make lightly.”

    The Obamas skipped their annual vacation in Martha’s Vineyard this summer. They had vacationed there for the past three years, The Boston Globe reports.

    My problem hasn't been with the vacations perse... but with the Obama's telling everyone they "must tighten their belts"; preaching austerity for everyone else while they party around the world on taxpayer dollars.

    Look how the media was in love with this guy from day one. This interview on c-span to purportedly support his "book" was only weeks before his election to the Senate (nice advertisement if you can buy it) and he references his being on "Charley Rose" the night before (your tax dollar at work on PBS). Did any other candidate get such full blown and soft-ball coverage. No way! Further, he makes this Bull $hit up as he goes. What did he know of the functions of a U.S. President? Did he dream it up like he dreamed up false memories of his father.

    Bush had the decency to stop playing golf after the Iraq War began. This Bozo learned how to play golf while on the gov't teet during two wars and has played, vacationed and/or campaigned more than any President in history. We would be audacious to hope that he would return any pay and presidential perks he received while not being on the job. But have you ever seen any gov't employee give back any perks? Whether it is now or in 4 year, this chameleon will fall far when he becomes yesterday's news as he has no identity outside of his empty suit. Just some thoughts...

    ...

    The $35 MILLION MANSION beach-front Hawaiian estate for Barack and Michelle Obama to move into come January 2013, GIVEN to the Obamas by Penny Pritzker, one of his filthy rich bundlers, puts an exclamation mark on Obama's hypocrisy.

    “Taxpayers spent $1.4 billion on Obama family last year, perks questioned in new book”
    Published: 11:32 PM 09/26/2012

    Taxpayers spent $1.4 billion dollars on everything from staffing, housing, flying and entertaining President Obama and his family last year, according to the author of a new book on taxpayer-funded presidential perks.

    In comparison, British taxpayers spent just $57.8 million on the royal family.

    Author Robert Keith Gray writes in “Presidential Perks Gone Royal” that Obama isn’t the only president to have taken advantage of the expensive trappings of his office. But the amount of money spent on the first family, he argues, has risen tremendously under the Obama administration and needs to be reined in.

    Gray told The Daily Caller that the $1.4 billion spent on the Obama family last year is the “total cost of the presidency,” factoring the cost of the “biggest staff in history at the highest wages ever,” a 50 percent increase in the numbers of appointed czars and an Air Force One “running with the frequency of a scheduled air line.”

    “The most concerning thing, I think, is the use of taxpayer funds to actually abet his re-election,” Gray, who worked in the Eisenhower administration and for other Republican presidents, said in an interview with TheDC on Wednesday.

    “The press has been so slow in picking up on this extraordinary increase in the president’s expenses,” Gray told TheDC. Specifically, Gray said taxpayer dollars are subsidizing Obama’s re-election effort when he uses Air Force One to jet across the country campaigning.

    When the trip is deemed political, it’s customary for the president to pay the equivalent of a first class commercial ticket for certain passengers. But Gray says that hardly covers the taxpayer cost of flying the president and his staffers around on Air Force One.

    “When the United States’ billion-dollar air armada is being used politically, is it fair to taxpayers that we only be reimbursed by the president’s campaign committee for the value of one first-class commercial ticket for each passenger who is deemed aboard ‘for political purposes?’” Gray asks in the book. “And is that bargain-price advantage fair to those opposing an incumbent president?”

    In the book, Gray admits Americans want their president to be safe and comfortable but argues the system should be reformed to stop the amount of unquestioned perks given to the president. “There is no mechanism for anyone’s objection if a president were to pay his chief of staff $5,000,000 a year,” he told TheDC. “And nothing but a president’s conscience can dissuade him from buying his own reelection with use of some public money.”

    Aside from a salary, the president gets a $50,000 a year expense account, a $100,000 travel account, $19,000 entertainment budget and an additional million for “unanticipated needs,” he notes.

    Here is a sample of other pricey taxpayer funded perks exclusively reserved for the president:

    The president can to appoint high-paid staffers without Senate confirmation: Obama has 469 senior staffers and 226 are paid more than $100,000 a year, according to the book. Seventy-seven are paid as much as $172,000 per year. He also has appointed 43 “czars.”

    The president can vacation for free at Camp David: Gray writes that each round trip made to Camp David costs the taxpayers $25,350. It’s also estimated that the combined transportation and personnel costs for a Camp David visit are $295,000 per night.

    The president has a full-time movie projectionist in the White House theater: Projectionists sleep at the White House and are there 24 hours a day in case anyone needs to see a movie. “Compared to the 450 times President Carter used the movie theater in his four years in the White House, the average American citizen, according to industry statistics, goes out to see a movie slightly less than five times a year,” Gray writes.

    The president’s family’s gets certain travel and security expenses paid while vacationing: “First Lady Michelle Obama drew flack from the media and irate citizens when it was disclosed that, not counting Saturdays and Sundays, she spent 42 days on vacation — within the span of one year.”

    The president’s dog gets its own high-paid staffer: “Bo made the news when he and his handler were flown to join the president on vacation in Maine,” Gray wrote about the Obama family dog. “It has been reported that the first family’s dog handler was paid $102,000, last year.”

    President Obama Takes Secret Golfing Vacation In Port St Lucie Florida,
    Press Not Invited

    February 17, 2013 9:20 pm

    The White House press corps is reeling over the latest vacation President Obama is taking over the long President's Day weekend in Port St Lucie Florida. While Mr Obama is spending this three day weekend golfing with friends and associates, such as Tiger Woods, in Florida, Michelle and the girls are show skiing in Colorado. Since the President doesn't snow ski, he decided to take a break in sunny and warm Florida and he has granted limited to no access to members of the press as he enjoys the sand, golfing and sun in Florida.

    Everyone deserves a vacation, but this is just another vacation that comes mostly at the expense of taxpayers. While Obama is responsible to pick up the tab for his personal expenses such as accommodations, meals, gifts and other personal expenses, the cost of transportation such as flying Air Force One at a price tag of $184,000 per hour, security measures, secret service expenses, their transportation costs and anything else is at the expense of United States taxpayers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KNjZhPcpmQ So most of the cost of any vacation for the President and his family comes out of our pockets.

    We don't know if the President has an secret meetings planned with anyone or if he simply wants to relax without the press bothering him, but it is a little odd for Obama not to allow his every move to be photographed and studied. One does wonder if the State Run Media will ever get the message they are just being used for the purpose of making the President look good. Maybe more incidents such as this will make them wise up.

    Read about President Obama's secret vacation in Florida from Politico below: http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/...ly-157233.html

    The White House press corps is expressing frustration over its lack of access this weekend to President Obama, who was on a golfing vacation in Florida.

    Ed Henry, the Fox News correspondent and president of the White House Correspondents Association, released a statement Sunday evening in which he said the press corps had been given no access to the president, who was joined on his outing by star golfer Tiger Woods, and that the WHCA would fight for greater transparency in the days ahead. "Speaking on behalf of the White House Correspondents Association, I can say a broad cross section of our members from print, radio, online and TV have today expressed extreme frustration to me about having absolutely no access to the President of the United States this entire weekend," Henry said in a statement, relayed in a White House pool report. "There is a very simple but important principle we will continue to fight for today and in the days ahead: transparency."

    The White House responded to Henry's complaint in a statement from Principal Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest, also included in the pool report. "The press access granted by the White House today is entirely consistent with the press access offered for previous presidential golf outings," Earnest said. "It's also consistent with the press access promised to the White House Press Corps prior to arrival in Florida on Friday evening."

    The president returned from his Hawaiian vacation on January 13th. On Feb 15 he and Michelle went on separate (but equal) vacations. The cost to us of the Hawaiian vacation was $7 million. These separate vacations will likely be several millions.

    but didn't the white house say he never gets a vacation? The press shouldn't worry because he probably has his own photog there to take pictures and if they play their cards right, maybe he will release some?

    As far as "One does wonder if the State Run Media will ever get the message they are just being used for the purpose of making the President look good. Maybe more incidents such as this will make them wise up." I would assume that they would have to have the ability and will to think. Could there be a presidential edict that says nothing can be printed or photograph without his approval?

    Hmm... Golfing with Tiger & no press? Are they golfing? Michelle & girls are show skiing. That's not a typo. It's all a show.

    LAT's Hennessey: 'Obama's Vacations Have Been Rare, Brief and Regularly Interrupted'
    By Tom Blumer | February 19, 2013

    My nominee for Media Puppet of the Day (we should consider making such an award a daily or weekly event) is Kathleen Hennessey at the Los Angeles Times.

    From her perch at the paper's Washington bureau, she wrote a pathetic story today about how President Obama is so much more relaxed now that he's in his second term. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationwo...,4972695.story Among other howlers, Hennessey claims that "Obama's vacations have been rare, brief and regularly interrupted by crises at home and overseas." Key paragraphs -- as many as I think readers will be able to stand, and no more -- follow the jump (HT to NB commenter Gary Hall at another post; bolds are mine):

    Second term brings out a more relaxed Obama
    No longer facing voter polls, the president can show some emotion, go off-script, take the first lady to a lavish Valentine's Day dinner, even go golfing with Tiger Woods. Historians warn against overconfidence.

    Finally unburdened by worries about running for another election, President Obama is acting different these days.

    Second-term Obama is noticeably quicker to speak his mind and get personal on subjects he once avoided. His schedule at times ignores concerns about "optics," Washington-speak for what voters might perceive.

    On Friday, for example, the president delivered an unexpectedly personal, and at times off-the-cuff, speech in Chicago about the root causes of urban violence. The famously reserved president spoke bluntly about the Kenyan-born father whom he barely knew, and his wayward high school days in Hawaii.

    Obama's vacations have been rare, brief and regularly interrupted by crises at home and overseas. Most recently, he suspended his Christmas holiday in Hawaii to rush back to Washington for a few days to deal with congressional negotiations over the so-called fiscal cliff.

    The White House stressed that the president took his work to the Floridian Yacht and Golf Club.

    ... it is hard to imagine Obama taking that sort of getaway before the election.

    ... Obama's Valentine's Day date with First Lady Michelle Obama almost certainly would have become campaign fodder a few months ago. The first couple went to minibar, a Washington restaurant so avant-garde it doesn't use capital letters, where the nightly prix fixe dinner for two runs $450, not including drinks, taxes and tips, according to its website. That's more than a week's pay at the $9-per-hour minimum wage Obama is advocating (and which is unlikely to go anywhere in Congress).

    On January 4, Hawaii News Now http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/2...time-stacks-up estimated that at his current rate, Obama will take 168 vacation days, supposedly less than the 174 taken by Bill Clinton. The article disingenuously said that "President George W. Bush took all or part of 297 days at his Texas ranch" without labeling them as "vacation days," because they weren't. They were "I don't want to be in Washington, so let's go home" days. The article gave the same treatment to Ronald Reagan's 369 days at his Santa Barbara ranch. Last time I checked, staying at your home isn't a vacation.

    Of course, it isn't just the number of vacation days Obama has taken. What's especially galling is their relatively jet-setting nature in the midst of the continued and protracted suffering so many millions of Americans are enduring as a result of Obama's misguided fiscal and economic policies.

    If a Republican or conservative president were doing such things during a recession or tepid economic recovery, we'd never hear the end of it from the press. But for Hennessey, our Media Puppet of the Day, it's all good -- I guess because Obama and his apparatchiks say it is.

    That isn't a 'news story', it's just a funny story. Funny because the lauded writer thinks she is reporting, and commenting, in newsworthy fashion....a sort of west coast Maureen Dowd.
    Obama's #1 vacation night was Benghazi night.
    Evidently, the man can be on 'vacation' while in the White House, when 4 Americans are killed, when the ambassador is butchered, when people w/i the administration are watching it on video online.....and no one bothers to wake him up.
    The guy didn't need to be in Chicago, Hawaii, Martha's Vineyard, Florida, North Carolina, Camp David, California, Hollywood, San Francisco, Phoenix, etc., to be on a vacation....
    The man can create vacation like status while in the White House.
    I expect a dark comedy to mock that some day, much like they mocked Bush reading to kids as he got more information about planes into buildings in NYC.....yeah, right, we could wait a long, long time.
    I know a president is on call 24/7, and he takes the things he needs with him 24/7. I don't begrudge anyone that. But, the over the top, nonsense that accompanied Bush and Reagan for being at their OWN HOMES instead of in the White House to work, and call it a working home vacation......was silly, and the media knows it.
    This man has been on vacation pretty much since he got there...........
    We'll always have Paris, right, remember that vacation, er', diplomatic trip.

    ..

    In the middle of the story is this gem -

    "The famously reserved president....."
    Media dilution and bias summed up in 4 words!

    ...

    "The President's vacations have been regularly interrupted."
    Tragic that the person holding the most powerful office on the planet can't take an uninterrupted vacation. Heck - I'm lucky to be able to take a vacation without getting at least one call from work.

    ..

    This is another example of libs using an out of context statistic to make a false point.

    Bush and Reagan did what us working stiff call WFH (working from home). I'm sure their home-offices were much more complete than mine, too. Since they lived on ranches it was also much easier to secure.

    Obama and Clinton have no "real" home, and not a lot of property around what they do have as a buffer... oh, wait, Obama did make that deal for his adjoining property with Resko...

    Maybe that's why he doesn't want the SS there... they might find Hoffa?

    you all have to remember he has less than 4 years remaining in his term so he has to get as many trips for himself and his family before he becomes a former president and has to pay for his own trips...unless he changes the rules of former presidents so that he will always have the taxpayers pay his bills. Heck, he tells the american people to tighten their belts while he loosens his so much I am surprised his pants haven't found their way to his ankles!

    MICHELLE IN ASPEN VACATIONING SEPARATELY FROM BARACK. WHAT'S THE COST TO THE TAXPAYERS? DOES ANYONE CARE TO KNOW? SORRY, THE PRESS HAS CHOSEN TO IGNORE THIS LITTLE FACTOID SO IT'S CRICKETS.... http://www.whitehousedossier.com/201...esident-obama/

    Michelle Vacationing Separately From President Obama
    by Keith Koffler on February 15, 2013, 8:11 am

    First Lady Michelle Obama plans to vacation in Aspen, Colorado this Presidents’ Day weekend, separately from her husband, who will land this evening in West Palm Beach for his own down time with the boys.

    According to Aspen newspapers, both Michelle and Vice President Biden are expected on the slopes. The White House has not yet announced the trip, and it’s not clear when she will be leaving, though she will presumably go today.

    Michelle’s separate excursion from the president means that, even as the government prepares to slash spending as the March 1 sequester approaches, taxpayers will be footing the bill for two separate Obama vacations, paying for items like travel and the expensive security and staff entourages that accompany them everywhere.

    What’s more, the Obamas just completed an exorbitant vacation to Hawaii, from which they returned January 6. The president billed taxpayers for two roundtrip tickets on Air Force One – which costs approximately $180,000 an hour to use – after he returned to Washington mid-vacation to deal with the Fiscal Cliff.

    Michelle spent the entire 17 days in Hawaii, meaning she’s back on vacation at taxpayer expense just weeks after a resting for more than two weeks in paradise.

    I’m a loud mouthed Texan artist; I went to a Tea Party meeting at the Aspen Institute last year run by some politician only in it for 1 thing: himself. Typical. Regarding the comments above about a knock on the door from the SS, I received one. However, when you battle billionaires, expect “Kill Obama” to be spraypainted on your house in a company town. Especially when the company paper runs a story that makes it seem like you did it. This tends to marginalize you. LOL.

    I believe in liberty as a guiding principle. When I told my fellow Texan Dick Armey that there were many of us tea partyers involved in occupy aspen, he ridiculed me. Not so fast—-We’re all little people fighting the elites. In Colorado, a third party could be formed to UNITE the tea party, the libertarians/occupiers and the Mexicans but that’s just my dreaming???

    Today, my friend Juan showed me his new Audi at church. Juan works 70+ hours a week. which to me is more American than Michelle Obama wearing $540 sneakers to a Food Bank. Here’s what’s happening this weekend in Aspen as the President golfs in Florida while his wife skis in Aspen… all at a time with millions of unemployed:

    Queen Michelle “Let them eat cake” Obama and VP Joe “Big Jim” Biden are skiing in Aspen this weekend while millions suffer under their Rule. Is it #tyranny yet? One letter to the Aspen Times suggested the situation here in the “Glitter Gulch” is Rome in the 4th quarter. Aspen is Versailles—-it’s Crony Capitalism on steroids. Aspen’s former mayor was at breakfast today at the Hickory House, she said she was not invited to the big fiesta last night for Michelle. We’re a town of 6700–news travels fast. Me neither.

    Last year, the FLOTUS and her family crashed at the winter palace of my billionaire neighbors—-> the powerful Crown family, the owners of the company that owns the company town, Aspen Skiing. [Where the fiesta was last night]. Not only do the Crowns think their doodoo is Chanel #5, they’re also petty tyrants. Google Ski instructor James Cohen Aspen or better, Lester Crown bribery Chicago Tribune.

    Michelle’s host last night is most famous for being on the President’s arts council, as well as for firing singer Dan Sheridan, banning his song “Big $” from ski areas in national forest under lease, and censoring our local paper, the Aspen Daily News [all covered online.]

    Last night, it was black SUV city at the Crowns at what locally is referred to as the “Petit Trianon, their palatial residence. There ain’t nothin’ “petite” about it.

    The gossip at the hardware store is where did all the fleet of black SUV’s arrive from? Straight from the horse’s mouth, the SS [Secret Service]: 25 SUV’s had to be driven up from Peterson Air Force Base near Denver [only 8 are stored in Denver]. The SS is real friendly with locals, and I ain’t talkin’ Cartagena friendly.

    Wait, it get’s better: the SS says only 3 “special” SUV’s can be loaded per cargo plane. SAT question: how many cargo planes for the VP and Royal Family?

    In addition, how come the Pitkin County airport opened the airport [closed normally until 7am] at 5am on Friday? Thanks. What was the REAL total cost to taxpayers? Sometimes I’m lucky enough to get upgraded on United Airlines, trust me, it’s REAL nice. The Queen of Denmark flys commercial but VP Joe and Michelle need to take separate government airplanes?

    The govt. says Ms. Obama’s trip cost $83K. Really? Don’t call us little people stupid. LOL. These Do AS I SAY liberals keep us chuckling 24/7 in A-town…..

    ..

    You are kidding right? The President of the USA takes a weekend off and you’re blathering on about it? Might I remind you that during George W. Bush’s 2 terms, he spent 487 days at Camp David on retreats and made 77 trips to Crawford Ranch, in Texas.

    Even more telling Bush’s total number of days on vacation or retreat during his presidency over 8 years was 977 days or 32% of his total time in office.

    Don’t even ask me to add the stats on Ronald Reagan.

    ...

    Frankly, Bush either went to Camp David or to his Ranch in Texeas. Neither Bush nor Laura went to Europe on a taxpayers’ vacation, Martha’s Vineyard, several times, at OMG, Aspen, Colorado, etc. Plus family and friends. You are kidding right. Get a lesson on truthfulness. He is a communist/Muslim and if he were my race I would be first one shouting from a mountain because I would consider him a traitor to my race. By the way, Democrats have twisted and lied about everything. They were the ones who did not want blacks liberated, they did not wants blacks to vote either and most importantly, they were the KKK who would lynch blacks to keep them in line and yet your people embrace them with open hands. It is nice to forgive and forget, I guess.

    Taxpayers spent $1.4 billion on Obama family last year, perks questioned in new book
    11:32 PM 09/26/2012

    Taxpayers spent $1.4 billion dollars on everything from staffing, housing, flying and entertaining President Obama and his family last year, according to the author of a new book on taxpayer-funded presidential perks.

    In comparison, British taxpayers spent just $57.8 million on the royal family.

    Author Robert Keith Gray writes in [u]“Presidential Perks Gone Royal”[/i] that Obama isn’t the only president to have taken advantage of the expensive trappings of his office.

“The press has been so slow in picking up on this extraordinary increase in the president’s expenses,” Gray told TheDC
