What would you pay to lie eternally on top of Marilyn Monroe?

In what has got to be one of the most obscene gesture yet in this recession, a Los Angeles woman is proving you're not even safe in death. She's putting her husband's prime crypt real estate, directly above the bombshell blonde, up for sale on eBay, with bids opening at $500,000, reports the LA Times. Is nothing sacred?

The Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park cemetery is home to a slew of celebs including Merv Griffin, Natalie Wood, Dean Martin, Mel Torme, Truman Capote, and now Farrah Fawcett.
But Poncher has perhaps the most coveted position in the Corridor of Memories Mausoleum: lying on top of Marilyn Monroe's crypt. Hie wife Elsie Poncher is putting the space up for auction, for her kids of course, to help pay off the $1.6-million mortgage on her Beverly Hills home. "I want to leave it free and clear for my kids."

Richard Poncher was a legendary entrepreneur who made his fortune through anything from electronics to Army airplanes. He even built bulletproof cars for Al Capone. Allegedly, he knew all the gangsters.

According to Elsie Poncher, her husband bought two crypts from Joe DiMaggio in 1954 during the Yankee star's divorce from Monroe. Elsie plans on moving him to the crypt that was reserved for her, and having her remains cremated when the time comes.

By moving his body, Elsie will be violating her husband's dying wish: "He said, 'If I croak, if you don't put me upside down over Marilyn, I'll haunt you the rest of my life.' " After his funeral Elsie supervised as her husband was turned over.

Playboy's Hugh Hefner bought the crypt adjacent to Monroe's in 1992 for $75,000. "I'm a believer in things symbolic," he said. "Spending eternity next to Marilyn is too sweet to pass up."

The $500,000 price tag for Poncher's crypt might be a tough sell in this economy, especially considering there's an empty spot in the mausoleum, two spots above Monroe and to the left, available for a mere $250,000. And it would take a real die-hard fan to justify the gaucheness of moving someone in death.

Living larger than life, the Ponchers acquired more than just one of the most coveted crypts in existence. Among her many valuables are a Picasso drawing and prints by Chagall. Certainly she could auction some of her artwork before turning over her husband's dying wish and resting place.

Even Julian Schnabel put his beloved Picasso on the auction block to help repay his heavy real estate loans. Picasso may just be the one recession-proof artist, as drawings and watercolors easily pull in six figures. Sotheby's just sold a Picasso crayon drawing for $437,220, well over its $329,980 high estimate.

Regardless, when the Ponchers meet in the afterlife, she's a gonna have some explainin' to do. Meanwhile, Elsie might best prepare for a very angry haunting coming her way.

Here is a once in a lifetime and into eternity opportunity to spend your eternal days directly above Marilyn Monroe. This crypt in the famous Westwood Cemetary in West Los Angeles currently occupied above Marilyn Monroe is being vacated so as to make room for a new resident. "Spending Eternity next to Marilyn Monroe is too sweet to pass up", recently quoted by Hugh Heffner, who has reserved his place in eternity next to her. The lucky bidder will be deeded a piece of real estate that he or she will make their last address. And below you will be Marilyn Monroe. In fact the person occupying the address right now is looking face down on her.

Well, she did do what he wanted, he just never said for how long LOL

I see nothing wrong with it if the spot is already there. I thought when I read the title that they were going to dig down 3 feet and bury someone in the same spot. THAT is way overboard!

Buyer Backs Out of Crypt Above Monroe

(Aug. 25) -- The winner of an eBay auction for the crypt directly above Marilyn Monroe's has backed out, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The bidder, who offered $4.6 million for the space above the beloved actress, canceled after being sent an invoice from the Beverly Hills widow, Elsie Poncher, who currently owns the space. Her husband is interred there.

What would you give to spend eternity with Marilyn Monroe? The crypt directly above the actress's final resting place sold at auction Monday, but the winning price of $4.6 million turned out to be too much for the buyer, who backed out. Monroe was buried in 1962 at a mausoleum in the Westood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

"I am awfully sorry, but I need to cancel this because of the paying problem," the bidder said in an e-mail to Poncher's representative, the newspaper reported.

The banker and broker representing Poncher told the Times that he has e-mailed the 11 other top bidders. He gave them a day to make an offer, he said.
The newspaper said Poncher decided to sell the space to pay off her $1.6 million mortgage.

Poncher told the newspaper that her husband, Richard Poncher, bought the crypt from Monroe's former husband Joe DiMaggio during his 1954 divorce from Monroe. Her husband died 23 years ago at 81, The Associated Press reported.

Jolene Mason, the cemetery's general manager, told the newspaper there is one empty crypt left in the mausoleum where Monroe is buried, available for $250,000 and located two spots above the actress and to the left.

Crypt above Marilyn Monroe back up for auction

LOS ANGELES - The crypt above Marilyn Monroe is going back on the auction block.

Bidding for the marble mausoleum crypt will start at $500,000 beginning Oct. 19, according to organizer Eric Gazin of AuctionCause.com . A previous $4.6 million bid for the space fell through in August when Elsie Poncher first attempted to auction off her late husband's crypt.

The new eBay.com auction will end Oct. 29 and require a 1 to 5 percent refundable deposit, based on the bid.

Gazin says he believes the crypt at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery will fetch "millions of dollars" at auction. Other celebrities including Farrah Fawcett, Natalie Wood, Rodney Dangerfield, Dean Martin, Jack Lemmon, Eva Gabor and Truman Capote have also been laid to rest at the cemetery.
