Etheridge: No Gay Marriage? No Tax Payments (I say go to jail for tax evasion then!)
Etheridge: No Gay Marriage? No Tax Payments
Rocker Gets Vocal On Blog Over Proposition 8 Vote
POSTED: 10:17 am EST November 10, 2008
UPDATED: 11:24 am EST November 10, 2008
Rocker Melissa Etheridge is venting her frustrations online following the vote on California's Proposition 8 measure that bans gay marriage in the state.
Etheridge, who exchanged vows with her longtime partner in a 2003 ceremony, declared in a blog entry posted on TheDailyBeast.com that she wouldn't pay her taxes.
The gay Grammy-winning singer-songwriter said that without the right to marry in California, she didn't think she should have to pay taxes because "I am not a full citizen."
Several other celebrities have come out in protest of the measure, which defines that marriage can only take between a man and a woman.
Wanda Sykes, Rose McGowan and Lance Bass were among the celebrities attending a protest last week criticizing the ban.
Also ripping the ban are gay performers Ellen Degeneres and Rosie O'Donnell.
A prominent friend of O'Donnell's has also been getting vocal.
During her concert at Dodger Stadium, Madonna took a moment to tell the audience she was sad "because African-Americans are equal finally, but gay marriage is not."
Also, on his way into an awards ceremony Thursday, actor Sean Penn called Proposition 8's passing "a shameful decision" and said he was possibly heading to a nearby protest.
I say you don't want to pay your taxes like everyone else ... then you should get the same treatment as everyone who doesn't pay their taxes (and just ask Willie Nelson about those repercussions of tax evasion)....GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL.... Do NOT pass GO, Do Not Collect $2M dollars.

She should keep paying her taxes. And keep fighting for equal rights.

Its about damn time someone points out the obvious. If they're not treated equally, they damn well shouldnt be made to pay equally.

What? That could almost mean celebrities should get SPECAIL treatment then.
Because the sure as H*ll get better treatment than the average Joe.
So next thing is Celebs won't have to pay taxes. Thats almost how your quote could be construed. IMHO. Because they are NOT treated as an equal. FAR above it.
She should have to pay taxes just like the rest of us. NO matter what her belief is. That's pretty much the way it is. DIE and pay taxes thats what my parents always said.

the air in alpena must really be thin...
They had the chance to vote on the issue, as it was brought on the California ballots...they lost.
In turn, one could say, since McCain lost, the ones that voted for him should not have to pay any taxes because their candidate didn't win -- how far do you think that monkey schit would fly???
that's just dumb.
she is earning an income, which is subject to being taxed. If you don't pay your taxes, you get punished -- celebrities are not immune -- look at the celebs that "thought" they could get away with it... first one that comes to mind is Willie Nelson.
Perhaps, instead ... if she wants to not pay taxes in protest...the rest of us will just download her music on the internet to deprive her of an income in protest of her not wanting to pay taxes.

Joan Baez tried that in the 60's and it didn't work for her then and shouldn't work for anyone here now.
They (gay community) have the same rights as anyone else in this country. Well if they get special tax breaks for being gay then I want special tax breaks since I am single and don't have kids. So I should not be charged for school tax or anything else since I don't have kids in school - It doesn't work that way - the taxes are used for the "greater good" of the society. I bet if someone went out and beat the crap out of her she would be the first one to call the police - well if she doesn't pay taxes then she should defend herself and leave the tax supported police alone. See how she likes it that way.

Hey I'm all for not paying taxes because McCain lost. Just joking but I wouldn't turn it down if they let us. We can call it a concilation price because we lost.

LOL, we could all use that excuse for not paying taxes. We all are not represented in some aspect of what we want from the government.
Plus it was the public majority who voted it down so now they want to force it on everybody? This is why the gays start to talk about it in school with the smaller grades. Well it backfired on them when they took the class to a gay wedding. Not cool.

Gays absolutely do not have the same rights as everyone else. You and I are allowed to marry the consenting adult we love. Gays cannot. You and I get all the rights and privledges that go along with being married. Gays do not.
I disagree with her methods but I understand her frustrations.
