Ten-year-old boy, 4-foot-11, misses out on half-price buffet because he was 3.5 inches too tall; Chinese restaurant defends height policy.
Call it a case of growing up too soon.
A 10-year-old in Britain missed out on a Chinese restaurant's half-price children's buffet because he was 3.5 inches over the eatery's height restriction for the special.
It wasn't until after Ben Gardner, 4-foot-11 (and shown at right in the photo), had eaten at the all-you-can-eat Angel Chef Chinese restaurant in Gloucester, England, on May 29 that the boy's father discovered he was charged full price, the Daily Mail reports.
"We went up to the counter to pay after the meal and I thought they'd got the bill wrong," Ben's father, Gareth Gardner, told the paper. "I said they'd mischarged us and they made Gareth stand next to a height chart and told me he didn't qualify for the children's menu."
The eatery defended its policy.
"Since last year we started charging the adult price for children over 140cm [approximately 4-foot-7-and-a-half]," a spokeswoman told the paper. "We leave it to the discretion of the manager."

this kind of stuff always happens w/my oldest ds, he will turn 12 in a few weeks but looks at least 16 or 17. I always have to say but he is only 11. LOL
Never went somewhere where they didn't believe me though.

A friend of mine had a lot of similar problems. Her son is 9 but is about 5'3". He wouldn't have been eligible for that half price buffet since kindergarten. I realize a policy is a policy. Just because a 15yo girl is "on a diet" and doesn't eat much that doesn't mean she can order from the 12 and under kid menu either.

They need to realize that sometimes you can't always go by the height of someone on kids pricing. Every kids grows at a different rate. Up until I was 16 I qualified at the movies and at resturaunts to get the kids rate. They never asked me how old I was, they just assumed I was younger than what I was. On the same note, my little cousin was 6 foot tall by the time he was 11 years old, and they all assumed he was too old for the discount. So while most times our parents tried to be honest, when we went together to places they figured that it was actually working out even when they charged us 2 different prices...LOL

one of my daughters is taller than me, she's only 15, and the other is 12, and is my same height.
They should go by age not height, I thought that only amusement parks did that for their rides LOL.
Just because the majority of the chinese population is short, doesn't mean all of us are.
Yeah, my daughters look much older than their age~~uugghh.

DS was very tall as a child. When we went out to eat I would always inform them when ordering what his age was.
I would have never argued with them over a discount for him. He did and still does eat like a horse LOL.

I have the opposite problem, my youngest son is 9 but he wears a 5t in clothes, most people assume he's younger til he starts talking. LOL
