Michelle Obama has taken casual to a haute new level.
While volunteering Wednesday at a D.C. food bank, the First Lady sported her usual J.Crew cardigan, a pair of utilitarian capri pants and, on her feet, a sneaky splurge: trainers that go for $540.
That's right: These sneakers - suede, with grosgrain ribbon laces and metallic pink toe caps - are made by French design house Lanvin, one of fashion's hottest labels. They come in denim and satin versions, and have been a brisk seller all spring.
They're out of stock at posh Meatpacking District boutique Jeffrey, and Barneys New York boasts a limited selection of the sneaks, which are a cult favorite among fashionistas.
It's likely Michelle got hers through Ikram, the Chicago retailer that often outfits her.
"They're shoes," the First Lady's reps sniffed when curious reporters inquired about the fancy footwear.
Michelle has stepped out in Lanvin before while getting down to business. A week ago, she shoveled dirt at a tree planting while wearing the line's chiffon tank.
Dresses and strappy pumps cost upward of $1,500, while tops go for $400 to $1,000.
Other celebrity fans of Lanvin's costly kicks include Ellen DeGeneres and Kanye West, who has blogged about his faves.
As the family's primary dog walker, Michelle clearly requires comfortable footwear.
I got up at 5:15 in the morning to walk my puppy," she joked Thursday. "That's how my day starts. Even though the kids are supposed to do a lot of the work, I'm still up at 5:15 a.m. taking my dog out."
She'll be trodding on New York's sidewalks Tuesday for the first time as First Lady. Michelle will meet with staff at the U.S. mission to the United Nations. Later, she headlines Time magazine's "100 most influential people" gala.

.
She wore these volunteering at a food bank?? come on!! I bet most of those people at the food bank don't even spend that much on clothes AND shoes in one year!! I would personally feel embaressed, like I was too good to be there or something in my nice new fancy shoes.
She requires comfortable footwear to walk her dog?
Get a pair of nikes or newbalance, they work great for me!
But of course, it's her choice, money to get/buy what ever she wants, there are different splurges that everyone does for themselves. Just because I don't have the $$ to do it, who's to say I wouldn't if I did have the money??

I'm not shocked at $540 for a pair of shoes. I myself wouldn't pair $54 for a pair of those shoes lol. Heck I would have a hard time wearing them if they were Free.
I have paid a couple hundred for DS's shoes when he was growing up.

The shoes are ugly and can't she find pants that fit her right?
I've seen better looking shoes as Target.

Ugly is right. Huby and I together do not spend that much on clothes and shoes in a year. But if I had their money, I still would not spend that much money on shoes. American made New Balance are fine with me and we buy them at discount stores with a coupon. Seeing that America is in such bad shape economicly right now, they should be buying American made products.

Trying to care... Nope, just can't seem to care how someone else spends their own money.

A lot of the people coming to food banks these days are the same ones who used to contribute. They still have nice clothes and cars. Sad, but these are the times that we live,
Michelle O. looks great. She can spend her money any way she wants to. It's not like she lives in a single wide somewhere; she lives in the White House.
She could have spent a whole lot more on a pair of shoes than she did. I think it's great that she's volunteering at a food bank. I don't think that I ever saw Barbara Bush volunteering at a food bank.
But, go ahead and focus on the shoes if that's what's important to you!

whatever, were not discussing barbar bush, were discussing Michelle O.'s butt-ass ugly shoes, and wondering why ANYONE would pay that much $$ for them. If Mrs. Barbara Bush wore outrageously butt-ass ugly expensive shoes, I'm sure it would be pointed out also.
Don't know if she volunteered at a food bank or not?????? don't care.
She has a foundation for literacy and other things, no wait, let me go look it up~~ ya know, for back up.
And no, it's not what's most important to us, it's just a topic...... shoes.........
