I said that I had HEARD (meaning I didn't know for sure)...because it really doesn't matter too much to me...and where I saw that it was a designer dog was wrong -- no big deal...

    and I agree it's a cute puppy --

It's a fairly rare breed, so that might be why some thought it was a designer dog.

They were considering a labradoodle, which is a designer dog. Poodle/lab mix.

I'm sure it will be. Even if the dog gloss wears off the Obamas, some white house staffer will fall in love with it. The dog has a happy future.

Who knows, the Obamas may find they love having a dog. They don't strike me as pet loving people, so we'll see.

When the Clintons got Buddy, I saw video of the Pres in the yard with the dog. Buddy was jumping all over him, grabbing his hands, just acting like an idiot.... acting like a dog who hadn't spent much time with that human.

Obama 2009 income includes $1,600 pet dog, Bo
By Erica Werner, Associated Press Writer Mon May 17, 7:54 pm ET

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama raked in millions of dollars in book royalties in 2009 and got one very special $1,600 gift — his pet dog, Bo.

The Portuguese water dog, which was a gift from the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, was listed on annual financial disclosure forms the White House released Monday.

Royalties from his books, "Dreams From My Father" and "Audacity of Hope," rang in at between $1 million and $5 million each.

Obama also listed a number of safe investments in Treasury bonds and retirement and college savings accounts. Including funds held jointly with his wife, Michelle, those assets were worth between about $2.2 million and $7.5 million in 2009. Assets are listed in wide ranges on the disclosure forms, making it difficult to determine their value with precision.

There was also $1.4 million from winning the Nobel Peace Prize, which the president donated to charity.

Obama also sold two inheritances from his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who died in the final days of his campaign. He made less than $1,000 from the sale of a tax-free trust. A second inheritance — shares in the Bank of Hawaii where his grandmother rose from a secretary to a vice president — sold for between $250,000 and $500,000. Obama's tax returns, made public earlier in the year, show he took a loss on that investment.

Obama's salary is $400,000. He listed no debts.

Michelle Obama has some assets of her own, including retirement funds and a deferred compensation package from the University of Chicago Hospitals where she worked as an executive.

An oddity Michelle Obama shares with other recent first ladies: she gets so-called "pin money," an old-fashioned term for spending money a man would give his wife, from the trust of a man named Henry G. Freeman Jr.

Freeman died in 1917, stating that after the last relatives in his will were deceased, an annuity of $12,000 would be paid every year to each first lady during her husband's term as president. The reason he gave was that, in his opinion, presidents were poorly paid. His last relatives didn't die until 1989.

I didn't know much about them until recently.

Portuguese water dogs don’t come cheap: It’s a relatively rare breed and you pay for that rarity. They can cost more than $2,000. Why? The dogs were on the verge of extinction in the 1930s when a wealthy shipping magnate worked to re-establish the breed. But the gene pool is still limited. Many breeders conduct costly medical tests and procedures to prevent inbreeding and ensure healthy puppies. A dedicated community of breeders, low numbers and the recent perception that the dogs are hypoallergenic keep them in demand and out of shelters.

Neither can I. Just wanted to share why they're ridiculously priced. That's all.

If you made the millions the Obamas are making and have made.....$1600 for a dog is nothing....

When the wealthy spend it's good for our economy.....let them spend it, they have it.

If the Kennedys want 1,00 dogs @ $1600 a pop, let them have them as long as they take care of them (and they'd have to employ someone to take care of them ).....let the wealthy spend their money.....the rest of us make our money from their spending. When the wealthy stop spending, we stop earning.....

And yes, on our family's income, $1,600 is steep for a dog.

Bo gets a buddy at the White House
    Pete Souza, AP

In this image released by The White House, Bo, left, and Sunny, the Obama family dogs, lounge on the South Lawn of the White House, Monday, Aug. 19, 2013.
    By Elisha Fieldstadt, NBC News

A new member of the first family arrived at the White House on Monday — a puppy named Sunny. First lady Michelle Obama tweeted a picture announcement and a White House blog post also introduced America to the female pup, who is a little over one year old.

The blog post said Sunny was "named for her cheerful personality" and said she is "full of energy and very affectionate."

The post also references Obama's comment to reporters last year that she was planning to host a doggie playdate for Bo, the formerly lone White House canine.

Perhaps the First Lady was convinced that Bo needed an in-house playmate when the White House tweeted a picture of him seeking for someone to play fetch with him while the Obamas were on vacation last week.

Like Bo, Sunny is a hypoallergenic Portuguese Water Dog.

Although the White House did not say whether the Obama family bought or adopted Sunny, the blog reported that the family has made a donation to the Washington Humane society in Sunny's honor. "We suspect Sunny will follow in Bo's footsteps and keep the President company in the Oval Office, go for walks with the First Family after their 6:30 family dinner and even jump up on the First Lady’s lap from time to time!" the White House blog said.

New White House pup Sunny: Why not a rescue dog?
The first family wanted new pup Sunny Obama to be a pal for Bo. But not everyone was 100 percent happy with the choice of the new dog, with some citing millions of shelter dogs that need homes.

By Peter Grier, Staff writer / August 20, 2013

Yes, the Obamas have a new dog. Her name is Sunny, and she’s a Portuguese Water Dog like incumbent White House pet, Bo.

The five-year-old Bo wasn’t getting enough doggie interaction, apparently, so a new addition was brought in to amplify the romping level in the Rose Garden. Sunny is 14 months old, was born in Michigan, and arrived at the White House on Monday.

“Sunny is the perfect little sister for Bo – full of energy and very affectionate – and the first family picked her name because it fit her cheerful personality,” said a White House blog post announcing the pet event. http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2013/...amas-new-puppy

As you might imagine, this fluffy, feel-good story is big Tuesday in social media. FLOTUS (that’s first lady of the US Michelle Obama, if you didn’t know) welcomed the new member of her family with a Twitter-pic post of the two dogs on the South Lawn with the Washington Monument in the background. Lots of room to run, it looks like.

President Obama tweeted a similar welcome, while the D.C.-based mainstream media spent much of Tuesday trying to figure out clever 140-character dog-related remarks for their own social platforms. A favorite of ours came from Washington Examiner political writer Rebecca Berg: “Team of rivals,” she wrote in a comment on a White House Instagram shot of Sunny and Bo.

That’s a reference to President Lincoln’s famously ambitious and cantankerous Cabinet, in case you didn’t know.

However, not everyone was completely, 100 percent happy about the choice of the new dog.

Wayne Pacelle, president of The Humane Society of the United States, noted on his blog Tuesday that the Obamas made little reference to exactly where Sunny came from, other than to note that it’s the Great Lakes State.

But given her pure-bred status, it’s unlikely that Sunny came from a rescue organization or a shelter. “As we always say in such circumstances, we hope the Obamas considered adoption or rescue as the first choice in obtaining a pet,” wrote Mr. Pacelle.

Pacelle did thank the Obamas for making a donation to the Humane Society in Sunny's name. He also thanked the administration for pushing two rules to help reduce the suffering of dogs sold in retail commerce. One would ban importation from foreign countries of any puppy-mill dog younger than six months. Another would close a loophole and require inspection and licensing of Internet sellers of puppy-mill dogs. But the administration hasn’t yet issued final regulations for these moves. “It’s time for the White House to make these policies law. No more delays,” wrote Pacelle.

As to the rescue dog issue, about 21 percent of America’s 78 million canine companions came from rescue or shelter organizations, according to Humane Society figures. One big area of progress has been the decreasing use of euthanasia to put down unclaimed and unadopted shelter animals.

From 1970 to 2010, the number of such euthanizations went down by 12 million to 20 million, to an estimated 3.4 million. “However, there’s still work to do: An estimated 2.7 million healthy shelter pets are not adopted each year,” according to the Humane Society.

If the reason why the family choose the breed of the first dog was because of a child's alergies ... wouldn't it make sense that the next dog would be the same breed for the same reason ?? :molehill:
