Obama declares Venezuela a threat to U.S. national security
    8 hrs ago

WASHINGTON - The United States on Monday declared Venezuela a national security threat and ordered sanctions against seven officials in the worst diplomatic dispute with the oil-rich country since socialist President Nicolas Maduro took office in 2013.

President Barack Obama issued and signed the executive order, which senior administration officials said did not target the energy sector or Venezuela's broader economy. The move raises tensions between Washington and the OPEC member just as U.S. relations with Cuba, another longtime U.S. foe in Latin America, are set to be normalized.

Declaring a country a national security threat is the first step in starting a sanctions regime. The same process has been followed with countries such as Iran and Syria, U.S. officials said.

The White House said the executive order targeted people whose actions undermined democratic processes or institutions, had committed acts of violence or abuse of human rights, were involved in prohibiting or penalizing freedom of expression, or were government officials involved in public corruption.

"Venezuelan officials past and present who violate the human rights of Venezuelan citizens and engage in acts of public corruption will not be welcome here, and we now have the tools to block their assets and their use of U.S. financial systems," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement. "We are deeply concerned by the Venezuelan government's efforts to escalate intimidation of its political opponents. Venezuela's problems cannot be solved by criminalizing dissent," he added.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez told reporters that Caracas would respond to the U.S. move soon.

The seven individuals named in the order, which included top domestic security and intelligence officials, would have their property and interests in the United States blocked or frozen and would be denied entry into the United States. U.S. persons would also be prohibited from doing business with them.

    BLAME GAME

The White House also called on Venezuela to release all political prisoners, including "dozens of students," and warned against blaming Washington for its problems. "We've seen many times that the Venezuelan government tries to distract from its own actions by blaming the United States or other members of the international community for events inside Venezuela," Earnest said in the statement. "These efforts reflect a lack of seriousness on the part of the Venezuelan government to deal with the grave situation it faces."

U.S. officials told reporters in a conference call that the executive order did not target the Venezuelan people or economy and stressed that upcoming legislative elections should be held without intimidation of the government's opponents.

The sanctions effectively confirm Venezuela as the United States' primary adversary in Latin America, a label that was for decades applied to Communist-run Cuba until Washington and Havana announced a diplomatic breakthrough in December.

Washington said last week it would respond through diplomatic channels to Venezuela's demand for a cut in the U.S. Embassy's staff in Caracas after the government called for a plan within 15 days to reduce staff to 17 from 100 at the American facility.

Commercial ties between Venezuela and the United States have, however, been largely unaffected by diplomatic flare-ups, which were common during the 14-year-rule of late socialist leader Hugo Chavez.

The United States is Venezuela's top trading partner, and Venezuela in 2014 remained the fourth-largest supplier of crude to the United States at an average of 733,000 barrels per day - despite a decade-long effort by Caracas to diversify its oil shipments to China and India.

Opposition leader and twice-presidential candidate Henrique Capriles told Reuters the sanctions were a problem for a corrupt elite in the Maduro government, but not ordinary Venezuelans. "It's not a problem with Venezuela or with Venezuelans; it's a problem for the corrupt ones. It doesn't affect we Venezuelans."

Maduro: US trying to ‘defeat’ Venezuela govt with sanctions, we’ll fight back

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has accused the US of trying to “defeat” and “intervene in” his government, after Washington labeled Caracas a national security threat and implemented sanctions against seven of its officials.

“President Barack Obama, representing the US imperialist elite, has personally decided to take on the task of defeating my government and intervening in Venezuela to control it,” Maduro said in a national TV address. “That’s why they have taken today’s measure.”

Maduro called the move a “colossal mistake” and “imperialist arrogance” similar to that of former US leaders such as Richard Nixon and George W. Bush. He stressed on Monday that will be asking the National Assembly for decree powers through a so-called Enabling Law to “preserve peace” and “fight imperialism.”

Moreover, Maduro called the sanctioned officials “heroes.”

“I congratulate them,” he said, adding “it’s an honor” to be included on the US sanctions list. Maduro even named one of the sanctioned officials – national intelligence head Gustavo Gonzalez, the new interior minister.

US President Barack Obama signed and issued the executive order, which the White House claims targets Venezuelan officials who participated in human rights abuses.

“Venezuelan officials past and present who violate the human rights of Venezuelan citizens and engage in acts of public corruption will not be welcome here, and we now have the tools to block their assets and their use of US financial systems,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement.

“We are deeply concerned by the Venezuelan government’s efforts to escalate intimidation of its political opponents,” he added.

The full list of Venezuelan officials sanctioned includes Gonzalez, the head of state intelligence service, Manuel Perez, the director of the national police, a former National Guard commander in charge of state mining firm CVG, Justo Noguero, three military officers and the state prosecutor.

Washington and Caracas have been at odds with each other since Venezuela's iconic former leader Hugo Chavez came to power in 2000. The two had not had full diplomatic representation since 2008.

The most recent escalation involved Maduro announcing a new mandatory visa requirement for all Americans visiting the country on March 1. He referred to the move as a reciprocal measure and now all Americans will have to pay tourist visa fees equal to what “a Venezuelan pays to travel to the US.”

At the same time, Maduro asked to review and reduce the number of US diplomatic staff in the country, after allegations of “conspiratorial meetings” against Venezuela.

Earlier in February, Maduro accused America of being behind the attempted coup in Venezuela.

“The northern imperial power has entered a dangerous phase of desperation, going to talk to the continent’s governments to announce the overthrow of my government. And I accuse Vice-President Joe Biden of this,” Maduro said.

Later that month, Venezuela’s leader announced that the country successfully defeated an alleged US-sponsored coup, adding that a plot involved an attack on the presidential palace or another top target.

Want to feel blessed? Want to feel you don't need anything other than what you have. Please read this short, "unfiltered by the media" description of what is happening in Venezuela. It may not feel like the end-times for us, but it definitely does for these people. Here's my political opinion: This is what happens when you have a Marxist, Communist, Totalitarian, tyrannical regime... and if you haven't been paying attention, this is where WE are headed with a Leftist, Democrat administration and a lame-duck, corrupt, bought-and-sold Congress and a corrupt and biased media.

    Hello Pastors John and Kelsie

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to greet you and the congregation, and to thank you once more for the warm reception and the brotherly support I received from you during my visit to the Czech Republic last year.

Here in Venezuela things have taken a turn for the worse. The country’s economic collapse is imminent. Food shortages are now commonplace, with some foodstuffs disappearing altogether from the shelves. There are long lines of people waiting for a chance to purchase the most basic things, and riots, mass brawls and shootings are frequent.

Millions of Venezuelans are going hungry. Violent crime is out of control, and gangs of robbers and murderers run rampant and unchallenged through cities and towns. Law enforcement focuses on persecuting the opposition and turns a blind eye to the violent criminals that terrorize our country. The exorbitant inflation means prices go up uncontrollably for all goods and services, and air travel is prohibitively expensive for a vast majority, which, along with the government’s strict censorship of the media, effectively isolates our country.

It is my wish to ask you and the congregation to pray for my country. My family, like many, many other families here are facing unprecedented strife, and the future is uncertain. We fear for our lives. Please keep my country in your prayers. I hope in God that our land recovers from this dark moment, and maybe one day I can be with you all again. I keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

    Blah, blah, and more blah.

Just don't vote for a professional politician, and you should be safe. We are headed that way with whatever politician is elected. If you've paid attention to Bernie Sanders recent Town Hall, he knows he will not be elected, and warns to open your eyes, and even tho he did not say Donald Trump, he meant him, and the idiots clapped, they just don't listen.

All of them are at least left wing socialists, if not Liberals. Scott Walker will screw you, I know first hand, and say he saved monies. BS, he put on the block for paying more taxes <sales, for the counties that are close to the arenas> for sports stadiums for the next 20 years for $250 million, by signing a bill that requires the tax payer pay it, not the billionaires/millionaires who own that property.

What did he get out of it, $25,000 campaign donation.

Research the candidates yourself, or don't vote!

Venezuela In State of Emergency, Under Martial Law, With No Food, Water or Power
    May 18, 2016

Venezuela is in complete crisis as the country’s socialistic government fails to provide basic goods (like food, water and power) to it’s citizens.

Almost two million citizens signed petitions to boot President Nicolas Maduro from power, but their wishes have not been taken seriously. Without resolve, the residents have taken to rioting, causing the government to declare a state of emergency and martial law.

The people are now without food, water, power and are under their military’s complete control. Pray for the people of Venezuela.

CEO Raises Salaries to $70K for EVERY Employee, Now has to Rent Out his Own Home to Make Ends Meet

When Dan Price, founder and CEO of the Seattle-based credit-card-payment processing firm Gravity Payments, announced he was raising the company’s minimum salary to $70,000 a year, he was met with overwhelming enthusiasm.

“Everyone start[ed] screaming and cheering and just going crazy,” Price told Business Insider shortly after he broke the news in April. But in the weeks since then, it’s become clear that not everyone is equally pleased. Among the critics? Some of Price’s own employees.

Maisey McMaster — once a big supporter of the plan — is one of the employees that quit. McMaster, 26, joined the company five years ago, eventually working her way up to financial manager. She put in long hours that “left little time for her husband and extended family,” The Times says, but she loved the “special culture” of the place.

But while she was initially on board, helping to calculate whether the company could afford to raise salaries so drastically (the plan is a minimum of $70,000 over the course of three years), McMaster later began to have doubts.

“He gave raises to people who have the least skills and are the least equipped to do the job, and the ones who were taking on the most didn’t get much of a bump,” she told The Times. A fairer plan, she told the paper, would give newer employees smaller increases, along with the chance to earn a more substantial raise with more experience.

    From Fox News:

Dan Price, 31, tells the New York Times that things have gotten so bad he’s been forced to rent out his house.

“I’m working as hard as I ever worked to make it work,” he told the Times in a video that shows him sitting on a plastic bucket in the garage of his house. “I’m renting out my house right now to try and make ends meet myself.”

The Times article said Price’s decision ended up costing him a few customers and two of his “most valued” employees, who quit after newer employees ended up with bigger salary hikes than older ones.

Grant Moran, 29, also quit, saying the new pay-scale was disconcerting : “Now the people who were just clocking in and out were making the same as me,” he told the paper. “It shackles high performers to less motivated team members.”

The Times said customers who left were dismayed at what Price did, viewing it as a political statement. Others left fearful Gravity would soon hike fees to pay for salary increases.

Brian Canlis, co-owner of a family restaurant, already worried about how to deal with Seattle’s new minimum wage, told Price the pay raise at Gravity “makes it harder for the rest of us.”
And to think, all of this came about within a few short months.

Liberal logic, for ya. One man with good intentions loses so much because he doesn’t understand how economics work.

    Socialism: We all fail together!
