Israel bans outspoken Norwegian doctor from Gaza for life for 'security reasons'

Israel has banned Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian doctor who has helped Palestinians during conflicts for over 30 years, from entering Gaza, following his outspoken criticism of the Israeli government. Oslo has asked Jerusalem to reverse the decision.

"I was asked by the Norwegian authorities to go down to continue working in Gaza. When we arrived at the Erez Crossing, I was told by Israeli soldiers that I could not go into Gaza. I had to turn back to Norway," said the 67-year-old, who was attempting to return to the region for the first time since the end of Israel’s Gaza offensive, which ended in August, as reported by Norway’s VG newspaper.

“I have never broken any Israeli laws. It’s provocative, unreasonable and totally unacceptable.”

After Gilbert was turned back last month, the Norwegian embassy wrote to Israeli officials, but received “security reasons” as the only justification for the entry ban. Norwegian officials say Israel is “unlikely” to retract its decision.

“From the Norwegian perspective, we have raised Gilbert's exclusion from Gaza and asked Israel to change their decision. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is still difficult and there is a need for all health workers.”

Gilbert, who says he has treated about 11,000 Palestinians since first traveling to the region in 1981, hit the spotlight when he became an articulate spokesman for Palestinians during Operation Cast Lead in 2008, when most Western journalists were not allowed to enter the territory. He gained notoriety in Israel after co-authoring a highly-critical open letter about the country, which was published in the respected medical journal, Lancet, in July, at the height of the latest conflict, in which more than 2,100 were killed.

“Israel’s attacks aim to terrorize, wound the soul and the body of the people, and make their life impossible in the future, as well as also demolishing their homes and prohibiting the means to rebuild,” said one excerpt.

“We register with dismay that only 5 percent of our Israeli academic colleagues signed an appeal to their government to stop the military operation against Gaza. We are tempted to conclude that with the exception of this 5 percent, the rest of the Israeli academics are complicit in the massacre and destruction of Gaza.”

The letter caused outrage in Israel when it was discovered that two of the authors, though not Gilbert, had publicly shared an anti-Semitic video by white supremacist David Duke. Lancet editor Richard Horton later said he “deeply regretted” the “polarization” that resulted from the publication of a largely political document in a scientific magazine.

But Gilbert, a lifetime member of Norway’s hard-left Red Party, who has worked at the University Hospital of North Norway in Tromso since 1976, has been an outspoken critic of Israel, accusing it of "occupation" and "apartheid." He also criticized the US, claiming that "the oppressed has [sic] a moral right to attack the US with the weapons they may create" in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Israeli officials have referred to him as a Jekyll and Hyde figure, for his combination of philanthropy and fiery rhetoric.

Gilbert himself says that he has no regrets over his words about the latest conflict, and has just released a harrowing “testimony” of his stint in Gaza earlier this year.

“When the pen, camera and stethoscope are a security threat, we are facing a regime that fears only one thing: the truth,” he told VG.

it appears that he is also ignoring the truth that hamas put rockets and weapons in peoples' homes, religious centers and schools. they have been known also to put children in front of them while shooting at israeli soldiers and should the soldiers fire back, they condemn them for harming children while knowingly putting those children in danger. their schools teach young children to hate and kill israelis but when the terrorists and palestinian leaders have family members who need medical care, they are sent to israel for life saving medical help (which they usually forget to mention). this doctor spews his hatred and i do not think israel reacts any differently than any other country would or has reacted by not permitting them entry. heck we even have hospitals who have blocked foxnews from their tv channels because they do not like what they say (even if it is the truth).

Palestinians Dance in Streets, Hand Out Sweets to ‘Celebrate’ Murders of 4 Jerusalem Rabbis During Prayers

By Jason DeWitt on November 18, 2014

Two ‘Palestinian’ Muslims with guns and axes, shouting “Allahu Akbar” stormed into a Jerusalem synagogue earlier today killing four Rabbis — 3 of them American citizens studying there — and injuring six. It was just the latest murderous Arab terror attack Israelis have had to endure in the bloody month of November.

And now Muslims in the West Bank and Gaza are “celebrating” the murders in the streets like its a giant party. If that surprises you, then you must have missed how the ‘Palestinians” reacted after 3,000 Americans were slaughtered in the 9/11 attacks.

Here are photos of Arabs whooping it up in the street after news of the mass murder became public:

Flashing the “victory” sign and passing out lemon bars to street folk:

Here, supporters of the Jew-murderers pay homage with axes (like the murderers used) and posters of the terrorists:

The bloody aftermath: 4 Jews were murdered with guns, knives and hacked with axes while praying in a Jerusalem synagogue

Absolutely disgusting. But nothing new. Some of you may remember when these same Palestinians whooped it up in raucous celebration when nearly 3,000 Americans were slaughtered on 9/11/2001. On that day, a furious Brit Hume of FoxNews reported on how Muslims danced in the streets while the Twin Towers lay in a heap of rubble, smoke and death:

Repulsive. And yet these are the savages that Barack Obama and John Kerry takes sides with when they threaten Israel with all manner of punishments unless they “make peace” with people who celebrate mass murder. Can there really be any peace with such vile specimens of humanity?

UPDATE: Palestinians are continuing their celebration of mass murder online as well:

obama administration has close ties to a pro-muslim group that is deemed a terrorist organization by UAE http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/11/17...arab-emirates/

US sends money to gaza strip run by hamas a designated terrorist group allegedly for humanitarian aid BUT where does the aid really go? http://www.vosizneias.com/172265/201...to-gaza-strip/ the cement that was bought to rebuild gaza found it's way into creating tunnels in order to infiltrate israel. this summer the UN complained when israel bombed buildings and seemed to think it was alright for hamas to put weapons in school, mosques, hospitals and peoples homes from where they launched rockets into israel so if anyone thinks that the UN is making sure money for humanitarian aid is going for the rebuilding of gaza, then eeither they are naive or stupid.

kerry and obama are always asking israel to make peace while the palestians run by hamas who continues to want the total annihilation of israel. why should israel make concesssions and the terrorist do not?

let's not forget obama snubbed netanyehu, a US ally, but made time for the muslim brotherhood.

where was obama this year on 9/11? visiting mosques in washington...............

personally kerry's and obama's words of condemnation regarding the murdering of religious leaders in a place of worship is not worth the paper it is written on. the world does not trust the US and i believe they have every right to feel that way when seeing how this administration treats an ally. everyone should watch their backs

500 rabbis urge Israel to stop demolition of Palestinian homes

Over 500 rabbis from Israel, Britain, the US and Canada have called on the Israeli prime minister to stop demolishing Palestinian homes. Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR) say Benjamin Netanyahu's stance is against “international law and Jewish tradition.”

RHR's open letter came after the Israeli PM announced the destruction of over 400 Palestinian homes in the Israel-controlled part of the West Bank, the territory known as Area C.

"Thousands have been forced to build without permits, and great human suffering is caused when hundreds of homes are demolished each year in Area C alone," RHR stated in their letter, adding that Israeli planning and zoning laws "severely restrict the ability of Palestinians to build homes, even on the lands that the State recognizes as belonging to them."

According to the rabbis, there has been "no representation or true ability for Palestinians to determine how to properly plan for their communities since local and district planning committees were abolished in 1971. The army plans for them."

In late January, the United Nations accused Israel of illegally demolishing the homes of 77 Palestinians, including many children, in East Jerusalem and the districts of Ramallah, Jericho and Hebron.

“In the past three days, 77 Palestinians, over half of them children, have been made homeless,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement, adding that some of the demolished structures were provided by the international community to "support vulnerable families."

“Demolitions that result in forced evictions and displacement run counter to Israel’s obligations under international law and create unnecessary suffering and tension. They must stop immediately,” the OCHA said.

According to the UN office, during 2014 Israel carried out a record number of demolitions in East Jerusalem and Area C.

“The Israeli authorities destroyed 590 Palestinian-owned structures in Area C and East Jerusalem, displacing 1,177 people — the highest level of displacement in the West Bank since OCHA began systematically monitoring the issue in 2008.”

While Israel insists demolitions are carried out because homes are being built without construction permits, the UN's OCHA says the planning policies applied by Israeli authorities in Area C and East Jerusalem "discriminate against Palestinians."

Palestinians are trapped in a vicious circle, where they build without permits to later have their homes razed to the ground.

"Palestinians must have the opportunity to participate in a fair and equitable planning system that ensures their needs are met," the OCHA said.

Hillary Clinton: Hamas Uses Human Shields Because ‘Gaza is Pretty Small’

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton explained that Hamas hides their military weapons among civilians due mainly to geography, not religious extremism

    The empty spaces in Gaza

    by Alan M. Dershowitz
    August 5, 2014 at 3:00 pm

How many times have you heard on television or read in the media that the Gaza Strip is "the most densely populated area in the world"? Repeating this statement, however, does not make it true. There are dense parts of Gaza, especially Gaza City, Beit Hanoun and Khan Younis, but there are far less dense areas in Gaza between these cities. Just look at Google Earth, or this population density map.

The fact that these sparsely populated areas exist in the Gaza Strip raises several important moral questions: First, why don't the media show the relatively open areas of the Gaza Strip? Why do they only show the densely populated cities? There are several possible reasons. There is no fighting going on in the sparsely populated areas, so showing them would be boring. But that's precisely the point—to show areas from which Hamas could be firing rockets and building tunnels but has chosen not to. Or perhaps the reason the media doesn't show these areas is that Hamas won't let them. That too would be a story worth reporting.

Second, why doesn't Hamas use sparsely populated areas from which to launch its rockets and build its tunnels? Were it to do so, Palestinian civilian casualties would decrease dramatically, but the casualty rate among Hamas terrorists would increase dramatically.

That is precisely why Hamas selects the most densely populated areas from which to fire and dig. The difference between Israel and Hamas is that Israel uses its soldiers to protect its civilians, whereas Hamas uses its civilians to protect its terrorists. That is why most of Israeli casualties have been soldiers and most of Hamas' casualties have been civilians. The other reason is that Israel builds shelters for its civilians, whereas Hamas builds shelters only for its terrorists, intending that most of the casualties be among its civilian shields.

The law is clear: using civilians as human shields—which the Hamas battle manual mandates—is an absolute war crime. There are no exceptions or matters of degree, especially when there are alternatives. On the other hand, shooting at legitimate military targets, such as rockets and terror tunnels is permitted, unless the number of anticipated civilian casualties is disproportionate to the military importance of the target. This is a matter of degree and judgment, often difficult to calculate in the fog of war. The law is also clear that when a criminal takes a hostage and uses that hostage as a shield from behind whom to fire at civilians or police, and if the police fire back and kill the hostage, it is the criminal and not the policeman who is guilty of murder. So too with Hamas: when it uses human shields and the Israeli military fires back and kills some of the shields, it is Hamas who is responsible for their deaths.

The third moral question is why does the United Nations try to shelter Palestinian civilians right in the middle of the areas from which Hamas is firing? Hamas has decided not to use the less densely populated areas for rocket firing and tunnel digging. For that reason, the United Nations should use these sparsely populated areas as places of refuge. Since the Gaza Strip is relatively small, it would not be difficult to move civilians to these safer areas. They should declare these areas battle free and build temporary shelters—tents if necessary—as places of asylum for the residents of the crowded cities. It should prevent any Hamas fighters, any rockets and any tunnel builders from entering into these sanctuaries. In that way, Hamas would be denied the use of human shields and Israel would have no reason to fire its weapons anywhere near these United Nations sanctuaries. The net result would be a considerable saving of lives.

But instead the UN is playing right into the hands of Hamas, by sheltering civilians right next to Hamas fighters, Hamas weapons and Hamas tunnels. Then the United Nations and the international community accuses Israel of doing precisely what Hamas intended Israel to do: namely fire at its terrorists and kill United Nations protected civilians in the process. It's a cynical game being played by Hamas, but it wouldn't succeed without the complicity of UN agencies.

The only way to assure that Hamas' strategy of using human shields to maximize civilian casualties is not repeated over and over again is for the international community, and especially the United Nations, not to encourage and facilitate it, as it currently does. International law must be enforced against Hamas for its double war crime: using civilian human shields to fire at civilian Israeli targets. If this tactic were to be brought to a halt, then Israel would have no need to respond in self-defense. Applying the laws of war to Israel alone will do no good, because any country faced with rockets and tunnels targeting its civilians will fight back. When the fighters and tunnel builders hide behind human shields, there will inevitably be civilian casualties—unintended by Israel, intended by Hamas—regardless of how careful the defenders are. Israel has tried its hardest to minimize civilian casualties. Hamas has tried its hardest to maximize civilian casualties. Now the United Nations and the international community must try their hardest to become part of the solution rather than part of the problem.

    Inside Israel's Pro-War Nationalist Camp

As Israel's war in Gaza claims more than 1600 lives, a recent survey shows that more than 86% of Israelis oppose a ceasefire. All attempts to reach one collapsed. As the operation expands so too does the movement in Israel against it. Anti-war demonstrations have grown from week to week, but so has opposition to them. Groups of nationalists have been demonstrating in support of the war and attacking anyone who opposes it. The Real News' Lia Tarachansky asks who are these groups and what is their political message?

    Quotes
"Using social media, right-wing activists have sent callouts asking people to identify individuals who post antiwar messages on their Facebook and Twitter accounts. They then harass them and pressure their employers to fire them. An employee with the telecommunications company Cellcom, an employee of the Lod municipality, and several hospital nurses were recently fired for posting pro-Palestinian or antiwar messages on their social media accounts."

"Well, there's a demonstration of thousands of people who believe that violence will not solve anything. It's better to talk before more people are being killed. On the other side, there is a group of Israelis that are very keen to continue the violence and to continue in the illusion that violence can solve the profound problems that we have of occupation and colonialism in terror."

Israel says U.N. grants Hamas-linked group NGO status
Louis Charbonneau - 16 hrs ago

Israel on Monday accused the United Nations of granting "U.N. non-governmental organization status" to an association linked to militant Palestinian group Hamas that it said promotes "anti-Israel propaganda in Europe."

Israel's U.N. mission issued a statement condemning the decision, by the 19-member U.N. Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, to approve the application of the Palestinian Return Centre (PRC), an organization based in Britain.

The statement said that in 2010 Israel banned the PRC because of its ties to Hamas, labeling it "an organizational and a coordinating wing of Hamas in Europe" with members that include senior Hamas officials.

"Until today, the U.N. has given Hamas discounts and let it strengthen its activities," Israel's U.N. ambassador, Ron Prosor, was quoted as saying in the statement. "Now, the U.N. went one step further, and gave Hamas a welcoming celebration at its main entrance, allowing it to be a full participant."

"According to this script, one day we may find Hezbollah sitting at the Security Council and ISIS (Islamic State) voting at the Human Rights Council," he added. "This is the peak season for the U.N.'s Theater of the Absurd."

The Israeli statement said 12 countries voted in favor, including Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Turkey, Venezuela, China and Cuba, and three voted against, the United States, Uruguay and Israel. India, Russia and Greece abstained, and Burundi was absent.

Official U.N. status as an NGO gives groups access to U.N. premises and opportunities to attend or observe many events and conferences at United Nations sites around the world.

Neither the PRC nor the British or U.S. missions to the United Nations had an immediate response to Reuters requests for comment on the vote or the Israeli announcement. A U.N. spokesman said it would be up to member states to comment since it was their decision.

The United States and European Union have designated Hamas a terrorist organization.

Since Hamas, and not the Western-backed Palestinian Authority, is the de facto governing authority in the Gaza Strip, the United Nations maintains limited contact with it in terms of aid delivery, education and other activities.

The United Nations' principal Palestinian interlocutor is the Palestinian Authority, which controls the West Bank. (Reporting by Louis Charbonneau; Editing by Steve Orlofsky)

Israel strikes Hamas sites in Gaza: Pregnant Palestinian woman, child killed as house collapses

A civilian woman and her 3-year-old daughter were killed as her family’s house collapsed during an Israeli Air Force strike on the Gaza Strip. The bombing, which reportedly targeting Hamas sites, came after a rocket had been intercepted by Israel’s air defense system.

A series of deafening blasts in the Gaza Strip were reported after 2am local time by multiple sources on social media, with pictures of smoke billowing into the air posted on Twitter.

Hamas-run Al-Aqsa Satellite Channel reported that the Badr area, site of the militant Palestinian al-Qassam Brigades, was among the targets struck. Some Israeli media reported strikes on “terror targets” in Gaza.

At least one civilian woman was killed and two of her family injured in the bombing, which damaged their house, Reuters correspondent Nidal al-Mughrabi reported, citing medical sources.

The bombing caused the house to collapse on the family. The survivors have now been evacuated to Shifa hospital, Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer tweeted.

According to Omer, the victim’s name was Noor Hassan, 30. She was in her fifth month of pregnancy.

The three-year-old daughter of the woman also died in the ruined building, Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qidra told Reuters. He added that a five-year-old boy and a man had been wounded.

The air raid followed an interception of a missile over the southern Israeli area of Ashkelon. According to Jerusalem Post, there were no injuries or damage caused by the rocket, which was shot down by the Iron Dome defense system. The rocket launch had triggered alarm sirens in the area.

Israeli-Palestinian tensions have been escalating recently. On Saturday, events heated up after five Palestinians were shot dead by Israeli security forces at two separate locations — in Jerusalem and along the Gaza border fence with Israel. At the same time, four Israelis were injured in stabbing attacks.

In Jerusalem, three Palestinians were killed by Israeli police as they were attacking Israelis with knives, according to Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld. Along the border fence, two Palestinians, aged 12 and 15, were killed by Israeli security forces during a Gaza protest.
