CCU cancels all classes after shooting
By Mike Cherney - The Sun News
Coastal Carolina University has canceled all classes and events today after a shooting near the university left one person dead and two CCU students were robbed in their apartment on Monday.
A message on the university's Web site said the cancellation was a "safety measure," and University President David DeCenzo said he wanted to make sure that it was safe before resuming classes. Both incidents appeared unrelated, he said.
After the shooting on Monday, DeCenzo said that classes would be canceled until at least 12:30 p.m. DeCenzo said today it was too early to tell whether classes and events would also be canceled on Wednesday.
Despite the cancellations, the Conway campus will remain open to provide services for the 2,500 students who live on campus, DeCenzo said. The university has 8,000 students.
All day-shift public safety officers will be patrolling the campus in police cars and golf carts, DeCenzo said.
"We’ve all become much more aware post-Va. Tech of things that happen on and around a university’s campus," said DeCenzo, referring to a shooting at Va. Tech last year that killed 33 people. "We’re just trying to work through this. Safety is the primary concern."
Any suspicious activity should be reported to campus police at 349-2177, according to a CCU release. Classes and events at the university's Georgetown and Litchfield campuses have not been canceled, the release said.
DeCenzo said he will meet with his emergency response team at 2 p.m.
Update: 3 suspects arrested. HGTC cancels all classes.
Will update as news is released. The main campus is in Conway, SC next to Myrtle Beach, SC

I haven't been to Myrtle Beach in forever ! My sister lived in Wilmington, about an hour north of Myrtle... so, we'd just hang out there.
I'm not surprised this stuff doesn't happen more often, the way things are nowdays.
