Another big toy recall hits Mattel

NEW YORK - Toy-making giant Mattel Inc. issued recalls Tuesday for millions of Chinese-made toys that contain magnets that can be swallowed by children or could have lead paint.

The recall includes 7.3 million play sets, including Polly Pocket dolls and Batman action figures, and 1.5 million die cast cars that contain lead paint.

The Polly Pocket and Batman recalls were announced on the company's Web site. The recall of lead-painted cars was announced at a mid-morning news conference by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in Washington.

Nancy A. Nord, acting CPSC chairman, said no injuries had been reported with any of the products involved in the recall.

“The scope of these recalls is intentionally large to prevent any injuries from occurring,” she told the news conference.

It was the latest blow to the toy industry, which has had a string of recalled products from China, ranging from faulty tires to tainted toothpaste. With more than 80 percent of toys sold worldwide made in China, toy sellers are nervous that shoppers will shy away from their products.

The recall involving lead paint was Mattel's second in two weeks. Earlier this month, consumers were warned about 1.5 million Chinese-made toys that contain lead paint.

Among the toys recalled Tuesday are 253,000 Sarge brand cars, because the surface paint could contain lead levels in excess of federal standard. The 261/27-inch, 1-inch high car looks like a military jeep.

There has been a recall announcement affecting Polly Pocket™, Batman™ Magna, Doggie Daycare™ and Shonen Jump's One Piece™ playsets containing small powerful magnets.

The magnets inside these dolls and accessories can fall out -- undetected to parents and caregivers. These magnets can be swallowed or aspirated by young children or placed by a child in their nose or ears. When more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract to each other and cause intestinal perforation, infection or blockage, which can be fatal. Aspiration to the lungs requires immediate surgery. Magnets placed in the nose or ears can cause swelling and be difficult to remove.

Please remove these toys from the hands of children, immediately, until you are able to determine if they are affected.

We would like to send you a brochure to assist you in identifying affected product. You will also receive a pre-paid electronic merchandise return label to send back affected product. You will receive these items via email. To ensure accurate and timely delivery, please add [email protected] to your allowed sender list on any spam blocking filter you may have in place.

Once you receive your brochure and label, please follow the instructions included. If your product is affected, a remedy in the form of a replacement product voucher will be sent to you within 8 - 12 weeks upon receipt of your return. Mattel, in cooperation with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is voluntarily recalling a limited number of Barbie® Doll and Tanner™ sets containing a small powerful magnet in the blue pooper scooper.

This small magnet inside the scooper can fall out -- undetected to parents and caregivers. Magnets can be swallowed or aspirated by young children or placed by a child in their nose or ears. When more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract to each other and cause intestinal perforation, infection or blockage, which can be fatal. Aspiration to the lungs requires immediate surgery. Magnets placed in the nose or ears can cause swelling and be difficult to remove.

Please check your home, play areas and toys for any loose or liberated magnets. Remove these from the reach of children.

Pixar Cars Sarge Lead Paint Hazard Recall

Mattel, in cooperation with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission is voluntarily recalling a limited number of the "Sarge" Die Cast toys from the Pixar Cars movie assortments. The affected toys were produced by one specific contract manufacturer during a narrow timeframe.
The recalled Sarge Cars were sold individually and in assortment packs in retail stores nationwide from May 2007 to August 2007. The Sarge character is a small die cast car measuring about three inches in length. The car is an army green color and features a white star on the hood. Surface paint on affected products contains lead in excess of permissible levels.

Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects.

Please have your product near you as you continue.
Please turn your Sarge vehicle over and locate the writing in the middle of the toy.

My DD has at LEAST those I copied.
She got MEGA Polly Pocket stuff for her Bday, MIL and family each got her a diff playset and shipped it in a HUGE box. Plus she saves her allowance to buy PP playsets.

While I don't think she would swallow a magnet, I hate these recalls.
