Gunfire at the Ambassador Bridge

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Gunfire echoed from the Ambassador Bridge Tuesday night, when a Customs officer shot at a car thief who blew past the border. The driver escaped into Canada...but not for long.

Windsor Police say they arrested a man in a stolen silver Gran Prix on Birch Street.

It all started on the American side of the bridge Tuesday, when the 25-year-old suspect reportedly raced away from customs officers who were about to search his car. One officer fired a shot. An investigation into that incident is forthcoming.

The suspect raced by customs officers on the Canadian side of the bridge, and a short time later the arrest on Birch Street took place.

Windsor Police say the Detroit man is locked up and faces local and federal charges. Officers say a weapon was not found on the suspect, but apparently he had plenty of time to dispose of one.
