Missouri Democrats propose law giving gun owners 90 days to turn in weapons
Anti-gun Missouri Dem. arrested with 9mm pistol, refuses breathalyzer test

    October 21, 2014 - 9:02 PM MST

Earlier this week, Missouri state Senator Jamilah Nasheed, a Democrat who has sponsored several anti-gun bills, was arrested while protesting in front of the Ferguson Police Department, The Blaze reported Tuesday. What made the arrest interesting is that Nasheed was carrying a 9mm handgun with extra ammunition.

Authorities also said Nasheed “smelled strongly of intoxicants." But Nasheed refused to take a breathalyzer test and maintains she was not intoxicated.

"Sen. Nasheed, along with another male, entered the street, were told numerous times by not only by the St. Louis County commander, but other officers on scene, that they needed to leave the street or they were subject to arrest," said St. Louis County Police Sgt. Brian Schellman. "They failed to comply, and they were taken into custody."

The arrest was conducted without incident, CBS St. Louis said. Nasheed, however, chanted as she was taken away. On Tuesday, Nasheed said hers was a “symbolic arrest” to send a “message to the protesters that we can protest peacefully and that we must protest peacefully and that we want justice for Michael Brown.”

But her arrest and news that she was in possession of a firearm brought charges of hypocrisy. According to attorney Eric Vickers, Nasheed needs the gun for her own protection and Nasheed says she holds a concealed carry permit. But if Nasheed had her way, other Missourians would not have the same right.

One bill she pushed, for example, would have required the “parent or guardian of a child who attends a public, private, or charter school shall notify, in writing, the superintendent of the school district, or the governing body of a private school or charter school, that such parent or guardian owns a firearm within thirty calendar days” of enrollment. The NRA has also dubbed several of her bills as "anti-gun," and a post at Guns Save Lives said Nasheed has voted against several pro-gun bills over the last two years.

Twitchy noted that Vickers organized a demonstration that disrupted traffic and caused accidents on Interstate 70 in September. He also serves as Nasheed's chief-of-staff.

USA Today said Nasheed refused to pay her $600 bond and sent the night in jail, but was released after an unidentified individual paid it for her. Nasheed, USA Today added, said her gun has not been returned.

82 shot - 15 fatally - in Chicago over holiday weekend
    July 7 2014

3 killed, 27 wounded over eight hours in Chicago, including boy, 7
    July 5, 2015

After a relatively quiet start to the Fourth of July weekend in Chicago, a burst of gun violence overnight left three dead and 27 other people wounded in just eight hours, including a 7-year-old boy killed after returning from a celebration..

"It's crazy," said Vedia Hailey, the grandmother of the boy, Amari Brown. "Who would shoot a 7-year-old in the chest? Who would do that to a baby? When is it going to stop?"

From 9:20 p.m Saturday until 4:45 a.m. Sunday, 30 people were shot across Chicago, three of them fatally, including Amari.

The other victims included a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl shot shortly after midnight as they walked in Old Town, and a 19-year-old man shot around 10 p.m. Saturday as two groups fought near Navy Pier after the fireworks display.

Several of the shootings across the city involved multiple victims: Four people shot in one incident in Austin, three shot in Albany Park, and two victims in shootings in the Cottage Grove Heights, Humboldt Park, Old Town and Fuller Park neighborhoods

The worst burst of violence last Fourth of July in the city occurred during a 13-hour stretch from Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning: Four dead and 26 wounded.

So far this holiday weekend, seven people have been killed and 40 people have been wounded by gun violence in Chicago. Last year, the toll was 82 people shot in 84 hours. Sixteen of them died.

Amari had been with his father in Humboldt Park after spending the day at his grandmother's house for a July 4th celebration, Hailey said. Someone opened fire in the 1100 block of North Harding Street about 11:55 p.m., hitting the 7-year-old boy in the right side of the chest and wounding a 26-year-old woman.

Hailey said she learned about the shooting when she got a phone call from her daughter -- Amari's mother -- who had spoken to his father.

Police officers blocked off the intersection of Harding Avenue and Thomas Street with yellow and red tape. The crime scene extended half block on Harding north of Thomas. Several neighbors gathered at each side of the scene, watching police officers.

Hollie Williams, 38, walked up to the tape, wondering if a friend who lived on the block was the one who got shot. She said she was washing dishes in the kitchen when her 9-year-old son ran in, scared, saying he heard gunshots.

"I didn't even hear anything with all the fireworks," Williams said. "I was shocked he knew the difference between gunshots and fireworks."

    In other shootings overnight:

A man was killed and two others were wounded in the Albany Park neighborhood about 2:45 a.m. The three were sitting in a van when someone walked up and started shooting, police said. A 26-year-old man shot in the chest was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. A 26-year-old woman was shot in the finger and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the right leg.

Around 12:55 a.m. Sunday, a 26-year-old man was shot to death in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side, police said, citing preliminary information. The shooting happened on the 7700 block of South South Shore Drive. The man was taken to South Shore Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said. No additional information was available.

A man walked into Mount Sinai Hospital about 4:45 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his back but wouldn't tell police where he was shot.

About 4 a.m., a man was shot in the 400 block of North Cicero Avenue in the Austin neighborhood. The 25-year-old was hit in the left leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in stable condition, police said.

Two men on a porch in the Fuller Park neighborhood were shot about 3:55 a.m., police said. Both men, 31, were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. One of them, apparently trying to get away, jumped off the bridge at 51st Street onto the Dan Ryan Expressway, where police found him lying on a median wall.

Four men were shot after an argument in the Austin neighborhood about 3:20 a.m. A 24-year-old was shot in the right leg. Three other men -- 25, 29, and 31 -- were taken to West Suburban Medical Center. The 25-year-old was in critical condition with a wound to his right leg. The 29-year-old was shot in the right shoulder and the 31-year-old in the left foot. They were on the sidewalk when someone shot them, police said.

A 33-year-old woman was wounded in the 11100 block of South Parnell Avenue in the Roseland neighborhood about 2:45 a.m. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition with a head wound.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the ankle in the Marquette Park neighborhood about 2:25 a.m. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in good condition. Someone fired at him from a gangway, police said. The shooting happened in the 7000 block of South Artesian Avenue.

Someone shot a 27-year-old man in the chest in the 1900 block of East 71st Place about 2 a.m. in the South Shore neighborhood. The man was taken to a hospital with a chest wound. One person is in custody and a weapon was recovered.

A man was shot in the 5800 block of West Bloomingdale Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood about 1:55 a.m. He walked into West Suburban Medical Center with a groin wound and was transferred in critical condition to Loyola University Medical Center.

A 32-year-old man was wounded in a shooting around 1 a.m. in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said. The man was on a sidewalk in the 600 block of West 54th Street when a gunman walked up to him and fired shots, striking him in the chest and right leg, police said. The man was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized, police said.

A 25-year-old man was shot in the Brighton Park neighborhood about 1 a.m. He was shot in the 3200 block of West 38th Street and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital.

A 34-year-old man lighting fireworks was shot in the arm about 12:40 a.m. in the 4200 block of West 24th Street in the Little Village neighborhood. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he's expected to recover.

Two teens were shot in the Old Town neighborhood about 12:10 a.m. A 16-year-old boy was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a leg wound and a 15-year-old girl was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital with wounds to both her legs. Both were stabilized. They were walking when someone shot them, police said.

About 12:10 a.m., a 24-year-old man was seriously hurt in a shooting in the River West neighborhood, police said. The man was standing on a sidewalk near the intersection of Chicago and Milwaukee avenues when a gunman walked up and fired shots, police said. The man was hit in the chest and arm and was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition, police said.

An 18-year-old woman was shot in the 9700 block of South Greenwood Avenue in the Cottage Grove Heights neighborhood a few minutes after midnight. She was shot by someone who fired from a passing silver Chevy Trailblazer. She was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition. She suffered a leg wound.

About 10:50 p.m., a 20-year-old man was shot in the 4800 block of South Kilbourn Avenue in the Archer Heights neighborhood. He walked into a nearby firehouse and was taken to MacNeal Hospital in stable condition, police said. He suffered a forearm wound.

About 10:20 p.m., a 19-year-old man was wounded in a shooting about 10:20 p.m. in the Little Village neighborhood on the West Side, police said. The man was walking in the 3000 block of South Trumbull Avenue when someone fired shots from a passing green van, police said. He was struck in the armpit and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition was stabilized.

A man was shot downtown about 10 p.m. Saturday near where thousands of people had gathered to watch the fireworks from Navy Pier. The man, in his late teens, lay in a pool of blood outside a condominium building in the 200 block of East Ohio about 10 p.m. and a shell casing was found nearby. Police said the man was shot twice in the abdomen after two groups of people got into a fight on the sidewalk outside the building. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was listed in critical-to-serious condition, according to police and fire officials. A suspect was taken into custody, and a weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.

Earlier, two people walked into Roseland Hospital with gunshot wounds about 9:20 p.m. Saturday, according to police. The two, 20 and 24, were shot in the 9200 block of South Forest Avenue in the Chesterfield neighborhood. Police parked in front of a brown home and stretched tape around a car parked in the driveway. Additional information wasn't immediately available. Check back for more information.

Burglars hit second Baton Rouge gun store
July 06, 2015 4:48 PM CDT - By Cheryl Mercedes

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Another arsenal of high-powered guns are on the streets of Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge police said thieves broke into Meaux Guns and Ammo on Mammoth Avenue at 1 a.m. Monday. It is the second break in at a Baton Rouge gun store in less than a month.

Cops converged on Meaux Guns and Ammo looking for clues in Baton Rouge's latest gun shop break-in. Owner Joe Meaux said one of his employees walked in early Monday morning to find what he described as a chaotic scene inside the gun shop. "It's very frustrating as a business owner. For one, the intrusion into our business, into something we consider our home," Meaux said.

Surveillance cameras from inside the business picked up three masked suspects swiping guns and other things from store shelves. Detectives said the suspects forced their way into a side entrance and got away with an undisclosed amount of firearms. Cpl. Don Coppola said investigators including the ATF are counting the missing merchandise. "Right now we don't have an exact number. It appears it was a significant amount," Cpl. Coppola said.

Investigators already have their hands full with a similar break-in at Bowie Outfitters on Perkins Road on June 9, 2015. Police said three masked men pried into the business and stole multiple handguns. "It is a serious situation. Again, you have guns on the streets," Coppola said.

Meaux said the guns missing form his store are easily to spot and can be identified by their serial numbers. The hard part is tracking them down. "To have these items, not background checks, it is frustrating for these things to get out like this," Meaux said.

It is frustrating too for detectives who are now trying to close two cases. Investigators said they do not yet know if the burglaries are connected. They are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867. Police and Meaux Guns are offering a $2,000 cash reward for any information leading to an arrest in the latest case.

Police concerned after guns stolen from Bowie Outfitters
June 09, 2015 10:01 PM CDT - By Greg Meriwether

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Thieves stole multiple firearms from Bowie Outfitters on Perkins Road early Tuesday morning. Police expressed concern over the fact that this theft could lead to more guns on the streets of Baton Rouge.

Investigators say surveillance video shows three masked men pry their way into the business. The thieves broke a glass display case and stole multiple handguns before leaving in what police described as a light colored SUV, possibly a silver Jeep Liberty.

"The individuals that committed this crime will take those guns and sell them on the street to other individuals who will commit crimes,” said Cpl. L'jean McKneely with BRPD. "With handguns, we take this incident very seriously because there are an excess of handguns out there on the street."

Police did not make the surveillance video available.

If anyone has any information, investigators urge them to contact Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.

Hope they register those guns they stole!!

    ..

I'm sure each thief had their background check, finger prints and concealed carry permit right? NOT
Stop trying to take our law abiding citizens firearms away and stop the thugs who have acquired them illegally! !!

    ..

Well, everyone knows gun control works like a boss, because no criminals ever steal guns, right? /s

    ..

Hmm let's take the legal guns from the people who buy them legally so that they can't protect themselves from the people like this!

    ..

Poor little innocent children. They was probably just trying to find some food for their family. We are to blame because we have oppressed them with our hate. If only guns were illegal, the poor disadvantaged kids would not be able to steal them.

Chicago's Fourth of July rituals: fireworks, gun deaths

Fiona Ortiz - 6 hrs ago

Late in the evening on July 4 a haze of smoke from backyard fireworks hung over Chicago. Like kids all over the city, 7-year-old Amari Brown stood on the sidewalk enjoying the show - until the staccato burst of explosives turned into gunfire.

Brown was hit when a man ran around the corner and shot at his group in an apparent gang-related attack. He was rushed to the hospital in his father's arms and died two hours later.

The boy was the youngest of nine people killed and about 50 injured in gun violence over the Independence Day weekend, despite beefed-up police patrols working 12-hour shifts on the long weekend, which typically sees a dozen shooting deaths.

Chicago, with 2.7 million people, is the most violent large city in the United States, with poverty, segregation, dozens of small street gangs, and a pervasive gun culture all contributing to the problem.

Brown was shot Saturday night in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on Chicago's West Side, on a street of brick houses where police have installed security cameras to try to discourage crime.

Police said the shots were meant for Amari's father, Antonio Brown, who they said is a ranking member of the Four Corner Hustlers gang, with dozens of arrests. He was free on bond on a weapons charge at the time of his son's death.

    A PAINFUL RITUAL

Amari Brown's death was followed by a painful ritual all too familiar to Chicagoans who see little consolation in the fact that annual gun deaths have been more than halved since the 1990s to between 400 and 500 in recent years.

First, detectives put up crime-scene tape, took pictures of bullet casings, and approached potential witnesses.

Then, at noon the next day, young women who know the family hung up photos of Amari near the sidewalk where he was shot. They made a shrine, pulling the price tags off of new teddy bears and propping them on the fence.

Antonio Brown, still wearing white jeans stained with his son's blood, stood staring at the photographs.

Three television trucks set up on the block and pastors from several churches held a news conference where they offered to pay for the funeral and announced a $1,000 reward for anyone with information on the shooter.

"We can't blame this on the system or on the white supremacists. The person who did this walks like us, looks like us and dresses like us. He lives among us," said Reverend Ari Acree, pleading for solidarity in the African American community to help find the killer.

Family friend Michael Singleton hugged Amari's mother, who was silent and clutched her son's SpongeBob pillow.

He pointed at reporters and said, "Until we make a decision as a community to end this violence, all of you will be out here next week, on another corner, filming somebody else saying exactly the same thing I'm saying."

    BEEFED-UP PATROLS

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy personally patrolled dangerous Chicago neighborhoods during the weekend. By putting officers on long shifts, the force beefed up its presence by about a third over the holiday weekend, he said.

In Englewood, one of the highest-crime neighborhoods in Chicago, police patrolled the streets in groups of five, during the day. At night, the neighborhood was full of police cruisers.

At a news conference on Sunday, McCarthy touted success in rounding up illegal firearms over the weekend, saying police had seized about one weapon an hour on Friday, Saturday and early Sunday. He displayed a table full of dozens of guns.

McCarthy did not dwell on the overall number of homicides, saying he believed the death toll this Fourth of July weekend was down. Last year, news reports said between 13 and 16 people died in shootings during the holiday weekend, and close to 60 people were injured.

Overall levels of homicides and shootings have not budged during McCarthy's four years on the job, despite his concentration on seizing illegal weapons and intensifying policing in the toughest neighborhoods.

McCarthy expressed frustration that Brown's father was not cooperating with the investigation, waving a stack of papers he said documented Antonio Brown's multiple arrests over the years. He said others in the community were trying to help identify the shooter.

On the street where Amari Brown was killed, relatives were distraught over the code of silence adopted by gang members and the fearful families who live among them in Chicago. Last year, police solved fewer than a quarter of homicides.

Amari's great uncle, 46-year-old social worker Jonathan Todd, said, "Everybody in this neighborhood probably knows who it is, that's the sad thing." (Reporting by Fiona Ortiz; Editing by Ben Klayman and Doina Chiacu)
