Police Found Thousands of Dollars of Graphically Violent Video Games at Newtown Shooter's Home
    By Noel Sheppard | February 18, 2013

America's media are always quick to discount the impact violence in movies, television, and video games has on society.

It therefore will be interesting to see what the response will be to a Hartford Courant report Sunday that police found thousands of dollars of graphically violent video games in the home of Newtown shooter Adam Lanza:

In some quarters, Nancy Lanza, 52 at the time of her death, is viewed as a villain, a gun-obsessed mother who allowed her disturbed son access to firearms and let him fester in the basement playing violent video games while she traveled and enjoyed night life. [...]

During a search of the Lanza home after the deadly school shootings, police found thousands of dollars worth of graphically violent video games. And detectives working the scene of the massacre are exploring whether Adam Lanza might have been emulating the shooting range or a video-game scenario as he moved from room to room at Sandy Hook, spewing bullets, law enforcement sources have told The Courant.
    There's more:

In 2006, Adam entered Newtown High School, a 376,000-square-foot building that sits like a fortress off Berkshire Road. More than 1,700 students enjoy such amenities as newly renovated athletic fields, a cutting-edge library and the state's largest school auditorium.

When Adam Lanza entered the school, he began to spend time with Richard Novia, a former corporate security director and licensed private investigator who served as security chief for Newtown schools. [...]

Novia said he was also surprised that Nancy exposed her son to firearms. "It's a serious mistake, first of all," he said. "If you have a child in the home with mental disorders, or learning disabilities, to have involved him with guns in the first place would be bad."

Novia owns several firearms and has taught shooting classes, and he carries a concealed pistol at certain times. He said that even shooting with Adam in the controlled environment of a shooting range was a mistake for his mother, given Adam's psychological conditions. "For healthy people, this is a perfectly fun activity," Novia said of activities at the range. He said the guns and the violent video games Adam played may well have been an unhealthful combination for a troubled boy.
With all the attention the media have given to guns in the months following this tragic incident, there's been precious little to the violent video games our youth are exposed to.

Maybe this report from the Courant will change that, although I'm doubtful.

At press time, of major news outlets, I could only find the New York Daily News covering this story. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nati...sEnabled=false Britain's Daily Mail has as well. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ideo-game.html

It will be interesting to see how much attention this gets in the coming days, or if the gun-hating media will keep it buried.

    Stay tuned.

Post facto question: Why has it taken over two months for this information to come out? If they had found a book by Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Ann Coulter, or Glenn Beck, I bet we would have heard about it weeks ago with it making headline news across the fruited plain.

But the presence of thousands of dollars of graphically violent video games? :crickets:

The New York Post filed a report on December 19 titled "Killer’s Basement His Eerie Lair of Violent Video Games." But the source was an unnamed "person familiar with the layout" of Lanza's home. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/nationa...BEW8Di7pMo1leJ

It took two months for some news outlet to confirm this with the police?

So, if he had stolen and driven a car into a crowd of kids instead of using a gun, we would be running GM out of business, right? Right?

    ...

As a conservative and a gamer, I was really hoping we wouldn't go down the liberals' route of trying to find a scapegoat to blame for the actions of Lanza and his ilk. The thing is that blaming any outside factor (whether it be guns, games, movies or whatever) for Lanza's actions ignores a basic truth: everything we've seen and heard about him speaks of deeper mental health issues, the kinds of things that had been in place for a long time and went unnoticed and untreated, which are much more probably the cause of his actions.

    ..

Lin, I think the issue no one mentions is that because of the mental illness of the person, it may be detrimental to them in the long run, to play hours of violent games a day. The reason the vast majority of people have no problem distinguishing between a violent game and reality is that we had a fairly normal life and the introduction to fantasy and violence were incremental.

If continued, repeated exposure to the same stimulus didn't have an effect on the mind, then Pavlov's dogs would have ignored those bells.

    ...

I think the reason it's worth mentioning video games is simply to counter the media gun-gun-gun narrative and to point out that they are being pretty narrow in their focus for an obvious political reason.

    ..

Almost all teenage boys(in America and Europe) have played violent video games. Just because one insane person played video games does not mean anything. The latest Call of Duty game sold 20 million copies. How many school shootings were there?

In 2009 there were an estimated 270,000,000 guns in private ownership. How many school shootings were there? The numbers alone say ban games not guns. The conservative in me says, rate the games and warn parents, but allow the sale of the games, and guns.

    ..

That's the thing, unfortunately...Games already ARE rated (thanks to the controversy surrounding Mortal Kombat back in the 1990s), but all too often kids get games inappropriate for them because either the vendor or the parents don't care enough to do their job. And while you can do surprise inspections and punish stores for failing, you can't do much about a parent who doesn't put forth the effort to actually monitor their children.

    ..

I don't think it is fair to place the blame on he parent's either. Like I said, there were 20 million copies of Call of Duty sold. What percentage of parents sat those children down and discussed the difference between video games and reality. Slim to none I would guess. Yet how many school shootings were there? It comes back to the mental health of the child. At best, the parents of murderers are guilty of not spotting warning signs of potentially violent behavior. Even then, there is often no such leading indicator.

One of the men pardoned on Friday was convicted of possession of an unregistered firearm. This, of course, comes as the White House pushes for strict gun control legislation.

    ...

Pardon law breakers and Blame the Republicans. Yes. Sounds normal for the Chicago radicals.

    ..

Is this something new ? I was only aware of presidents pardoning people at the end of their term in office.

    ..

Two things. First: the crimes besides the firearm possession are much more concerning, though I guess making that one the headline does illustrate the hypocrisy. Second: Presidential pardon for a sentence of probation? Seriously?

    ...

But these all sound like a bunch of small fry who would barely have the connections to get a ride to the Salvation Army, much less the attention of the President of the United States or his staff.

Perhaps the presidency has become as devalued as the dollar.

Teen held gun to student's head during class
Mar 05, 2013 2:56 PM CST Posted by Michael Oliver

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Two tenth graders have been arrested after one of them allegedly pointed a handgun at the head of another student Tuesday at Tara High School in Baton Rouge.

Witnesses told deputies that Jesus Morejon, 17, took the .38 caliber gun and put it directly on another student's face during class.

According to reports, Morejon then gave the weapon to a 16-year-old. The gun was later found unloaded in the 16-year-old's backpack.

According to reports, the 16-year-old told deputies he had bought the gun illegally off the street.

Morejon has been charged with illegal carrying of a weapon on school property and aggravated assault. He has been booked into parish prison.

The 16-year-old has been charged with illegal carrying of a weapon on school property. He has been booked into juvenile detention.

Minor - can't own a gun; gun free zone - can't have it on campus; bought the gun illegally - circumvented this whole concept of "gun control laws"

Facebook Photo of Child Holding Gun Leads to a Law Enforcement Knock on the Door
    Patterico @ 7:42 am

Family gives their son a gun. Posts picture of proud child holding gun on Facebook. Child Protective Services is called, their home is raided, and police demand (without a warrant) to see all their guns: http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes...lds-rifle.html

The family’s trouble started Saturday night when Moore received an urgent text message from his wife. The Carneys Point Police Dept. and the New Jersey Dept. of Children and Families had raided their home. Moore immediately called Nappen and rushed home to find officers demanding to check his guns and his gun safe.

Instead, he handed the cell phone to one of the officers – so they could speak with Nappen. “If you have a warrant, you’re coming in,” Nappen told the officers. “If you don’t, then you’re not. That’s what privacy is all about.”

With his attorney on speaker phone, Moore instructed the officers to leave his home. “I was told I was being unreasonable and that I was acting suspicious because I wouldn’t open my safe,” Moore wrote on the Delaware Open Carry website. “They told me they were going to get a search warrant. I told them to go ahead.”

Nappen told Fox News the police wanted to inventory his firearms. “”We said no way, it’s not happening,” he said. “This is a guy who is completely credentialed and his son is also credentialed.”

The attorney said police eventually left and never returned. “He has a Fourth Amendment right and he’s not going to give up his Fourth Amendment right or his Second Amendment right,” he said. “They didn’t have a warrant – so see you later.”

Brown told Fox News that it’s “prudent and wise to protect children.” “In many cases we may follow up on something and we don’t find any problems and the case is closed,” she said.

But the person who reported the false allegations of abuse cannot be held liable, she noted. “You can’t be prosecuted for making an allegation of child abuse –even if it’s false,” she said.

Nappen said what happened to the Moore family should serve as a warning to gun owners across the nation. “To make someone go through this because he posted a picture of his son with a .22 rifle on his Facebook page is pretty outrageous,” he said. “Does that mean that anyone who posts a picture like that has to consent to a home inspection and a gun inspection? I don’t think so.”

Nappen said they are considering taking legal action against the state for the late night raid.
Partt of the problem is that the Child Protective Services people claim they are obligated to investigate every single complaint of potential child abuse, no matter how frivolous it is on its face. This “we exercise absolutely no judgment whatsoever” policy obviously makes it easy for harassers to turn peoples lives upside down. The FBI told me SWATters use this technique, and in unrelated news, at least one Brett Kimberlin supporter has called Child Protective Services on a prominent Kimberlin critic.

As a society, we need to learn how to weed out stupid and frivolous complaints without spending wads of taxpayer cash and government resources investigating nonsense. “OMG THERE IS A PICTURE OF A CHILD WITH A GUN!!!!” is not a situation that calls for a team of government officials to knock on a citizen’s door.

Memo to government officials: It’s called “judgment.” Try using it.

Moore took this photo of police outside his home.

    comments

The Dad is a complete HERO in this. He is raising his kid properly and lawfully. He has his house in order. PLUS, he knows his rights and was unwavering in defending them. What is astonishing is that the mere ownership of a rifle (the.22) is construed as prima facie proof of "child abuse or endangerment" by the authorities. I think a chat on the porch over some hot tea could have setted this nonsense nicely. Was this an attempt to intimidate everyone in the state when it comes to gun ownership? SOMEBODY exceeded his authority and should be disciplined.

    ..

What everyone needs is a lesson on their 2nd and 4th Amendment rights......This man did exactly the right thing. If the law finds responsible citizens who know their rights this bullsht will go away fast. When they have the ability to harass and brain beat you into submission they will win everytime. Stand up for your rights......Go to your libraries or research them online......Be sure you understand them and then stand up.....Semper Fidelis.

    ...

This will become more and more common as people (the left) continues to demonize guns. What is unacceptable is that the police tried to conduct an illegal search of this man's house. If they believe the child is in danger, they can remove them from the home. Obviously, they didn't think there was any danger, but they continued to want to inventory this man's property.

    ..

Yep. And they are learning how to trample all over it from the RCMP up north. RCMP are experts at it and Canadian gun owners actually don't have a right to refuse a search, as a condition of having a firearms license.

    ..

That may be true. But there is also a law against false information given to authorities that is at the least a fineable offense. Also, they may say that "anyone" can call in with allegations and such, and "anyone" can do so anonomously. But, as soon as you call a police line, say 911 for instance, they know who you are and where you live. I know this to be a fact. A long time ago, a neighbor girl was playing with my kids and fell and skinned her knee. From the way she was screaming, you would have thought she would die at any second. I told her I was going to call for an ambulance and dialed 91 then hung up the phone before dialing the last 1 and pretended to talk to them. 5 minutes later, a cruiser was in front of my house asking what the problem was. I didn't even finish dialing the number and they knew. Said it was policy for them to check it out. They had to talk to everyone in the house to make sure everything was ok then warned me that such calls were illegal and I could be fined for it. If you need one, they can't be bothered. But they can follow up on a call that was never placed.

First, Obama uses taxpayer money to exploit the pain of Sandy Hook parents in order to push his anti-Constitution agenda by flying them to DC on Air Force One. Now, he is having one of them speak in his place during his weekly address to the nation in order to further push his gun control scheme. Do you think it is wrong for Obama to play on the emotions on these poor families for his own political gain
