    Paris Hilton gets jail time

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A judge sentenced Paris Hilton to 45 days in county jail Friday for violating her probation, putting the brakes on the hotel heiress's famous high life.

Hilton, who parlayed her name and relentless partying into worldwide notoriety, must go to jail by June 5.

She will not be allowed any work release, furloughs, use of an alternative jail or electronic monitoring in lieu of jail, Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer ruled after a hearing.

The judge, saying "there's no doubt she knew her license had been suspended," ruled that she was in violation of the terms of her probation in an alcohol-related reckless driving case.

"I'm very sorry, and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything. I'm sorry, and I did not do it on purpose at all," she told the judge before he announced the sentence.

She was then ordered to report to a women's jail in suburban Lynwood by the set date or face 90 days behind bars. The judge's ruling excluded her from paying to serve time in a jail of her choice, as some violators are allowed to do.

As a city prosecutor said during closing arguments that Hilton deserved jail time, Hilton's mother, Kathy, laughed. When the judge ruled, Kathy Hilton then blurted out: "May I have your autograph?"

Paris Hilton was among a series of witnesses who took the stand during the hearing. She testified she believed her license was initially suspended for 30 days and that she was allowed to drive for work purposes during the next 90 days. (Watch why Hilton thought it was OK to be driving )

She said that when an officer who stopped her in January made her sign a document stating her license was suspended, she thought he was mistaken and did not actually look at the document.

Also called to the stand was Hilton's spokesman, Elliot Mintz. Hilton and her attorneys characterized Mintz as a liaison between Hilton and her lawyers.

Mintz testified that to his knowledge Hilton did not drive during the 30-day period. He said he then advised her that he believed her license was no longer suspended.

The judge called Mintz's testimony worthless and expressed disbelief at Hilton's excuse.

"I can't believe that either attorney did not tell her that the suspension had been upheld," the judge said. "She wanted to disregard everything that was said and continue to drive no matter what."

Hilton looked forward and didn't speak to news media as she left court with her mother.

When a reporter asked what she thought of the judge's decision, a visibly angry Kathy Hilton responded: "What do you think? This is pathetic and disgusting, a waste of taxpayer money with all this nonsense. This is a joke."

Defense attorney Howard Weitzman said he would appeal.

"I'm shocked, I'm surprised and really disheartened in the system that I've worked in for close to 40 years," Weitzman said.

He said the sentence was "uncalled for, inappropriate and bordered on the ludicrous."

"I think she's singled out because of who she is," Weitzman said.

Hilton had arrived at the Metropolitan Courthouse 10 minutes late and ignored screams of photographers as she swept in with her attorneys, mother and father, Rick Hilton.

The celebrity case brought an unusual scene to the austere courthouse south of downtown in a commercial area. As if at a red carpet event, dozens of photographers and reporters lined up at the rear entrance. Yellow police tape substituted for velvet ropes.

    String of traffic violations
Hilton, 26, pleaded no contest in January to reckless driving stemming from a Sept. 7 arrest in Hollywood. Police said she appeared intoxicated and failed a field sobriety test. She had a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent, the level at which an adult driver is in violation of the law.

She was sentenced to 36 months' probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.

Two other traffic stops and failure to enroll in a mandated alcohol education program are what landed the socialite back in court.

On January 15, Hilton was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol. Officers informed her that she was driving on a suspended license and she signed a document acknowledging that she was not to drive, according to papers filed in Superior Court.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies stopped Hilton on February 27 and charged her with violating her probation. Police said she was pulled over about 11 p.m. after authorities saw the car speeding with its headlights off.

Mintz said at the time Hilton wasn't aware her license was suspended. A copy of the document Hilton signed on January 15 was found in the car's glove compartment, court papers say.

Hilton was also required to enroll in an alcohol education program by February 12. As of April 17, she had not enrolled, prosecutors said.

Hilton, heiress to the Hilton Hotel fortune, first gained notoriety for her hard partying as a teen. She attracted worldwide attention when a sex tape she made with a boyfriend was released on the Internet.

She stars in the reality-TV series "The Simple Life," now in its fifth season, with Nicole Richie. She appeared in the 2005 film "House of Wax" and recently finished filming "The Hottie and the Nottie." She also is a handbag designer and has a namesake perfume.

Glad the judge didn't let her off with a light sentence for being a dumb blonde.

She is going to kill someone going the way she is. Speeding with her lights off. How much dumber can you get?

Re: Paris Hilton gets jail time

I saw on cnn last nite about this and although I am not a Paris Hilton fan or anything, I must comment. Unless you have been to jail, you don't know what it is like. I saw the prosecutor and others saying that 45 days is a fair sentence, but I would bet a million dollars none of them have ever stepped foot on the other side of those bars.

I went to jail for a few days to "make an example of". It stemmed from a nonviolent ridiculous thing and is being appealed. I have never been rich or a socialite. I had to work for everything I have gotten. I am a taxpayer and law abiding citizen. Yet what happened to me was insane. Without going way into this horrible memory, I spent 4 days in jail while I was 8 months pregnant. My doctor told me that I was on bedrest and couldn't travel. My court was scheduled for 500 miles away. I had a notarized doctor's note yet the *****&^# judge sentenced me anyway. He said I couldn't miss his court for ANY reason. My attorney had already told me that it was O.K. and that it would be continued. LONG story short, I was locked up for a few days, not given ANY medications or even water beyond the little juicy sippers with their dogfood meals. IT was PURE HELL!!! Paper thin steel beds and 8 months pregnant did not fit very well. The whole place was on "lockdown" the entire time, so no activity outside the cell. It was the first time I had ever been to jail or anything like it. Jail is not the place for nonviolent people.

Just hope you never become unfortunate enough to have dealing with police, judges, etc. ANYONE under the microscope of the police and they will try to make you look bad. I don't believe anyone has the right to judge others except for the ALMIGHTY. So judges, I believe are going to be held most accountable for the lives they sat in judgement of.

By the way, in my twenties, I was hit by a drunk driver so I think I have a right to air my opinion here. I had to basically be put back together while in Surgical Intensive critical care. I have so much metal in me that it is really sad. But I am blessed to still be alive through it all and be able to live and breathe and have a blessed wonderful family. However, again, of all the pain I went through, I still say that JAIL or PRISON is NOT for the nonviolent acts.

Re: Paris Hilton gets jail time

Oh please. I mean I am sorry you went to jail and all...but come on. Jail IS for non-violent acts. You think all violent offenders started as violent offenders? I spent a little time behind bars myself. Hated it. Wasn't club med, but it sure made me not want to go back. People like her, and other celebs think they can get away with things because they ARE celebs. Maybe with a taste of "the real world" they will straighten up.

If more jail time was given to people for first offenses at an early age, maybe they wouldn't go down that criminal path. I know it straightened my ass out.

Jail is a great place for non-violent offenders. Oh and if we had no laws, with police, judges and the like making sure people followed them, and sat in judgement of those laws we could have pure anarchy. Because yeah, everyone would just "do the right thing"

I was happy to hear that she didn't get away with it.

I agree, jail is also for non-violent offenders. You should know the possible consequences before breaking the law.

I think it should be required for anyone to become a judge to spend at least a half day there. There are innocent people there. Yes there are, I see them on msnbc quite often. I believe it was our forefather, Abraham Lincoln who once said that it was better to free all prisoners than to imprison ONE innocent person.

IF the bible is true, it clearly states " Judge not lest you be judged". So, Judges/judging is totally against the bible.

But now you are judging the Judges who were appointed to pass judgement so you are in the same boat ( as it were ... )

Hilton says jail term cruel, fires publicist
    1 hour, 34 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - In her first public comments since a prison sentence, celebrity heiress and reality TV star Paris Hilton has described her 45-day jail term for a driving related offense as cruel and unwarranted.

Visibly shocked and tearful, Hilton was sentenced on Friday to 45 days in jail after a judge ruled she knowingly violated her probation on a previous traffic offense by driving without a valid license.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Sauer rejected the 26-year-old socialite's defense that she didn't realize her license was suspended and ordered her to report to a county detention facility on June 5. "I told the truth," Hilton told photographers waiting outside her Los Angeles home on Saturday night. "I feel that I was treated unfairly and that the sentence is both cruel and unwarranted. I don't deserve this."

Her lawyer, Howard Weitzman, has said he will appeal "to modify the sentence."

Hilton's mother Kathy voiced her anger at the ruling over the weekend. "This is pathetic and disgusting, a waste of taxpayers' money with this nonsense. It is a joke," she told Hollywood.com.

Hilton's fans began sending messages of support as news of the jail term spread. One fan, Joshua Capone, wrote to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asking him to intervene and keep Hilton out of jail. "She provides hope for young people all over the U.S. and the world. She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives," Capone wrote in a letter to Schwarzenegger posted online on Hilton's myspace page.

Hilton quickly responded on her myspace page. "I just want to thank Joshua so much for his kind words of love and support. God Bless. Love Paris."

At the hearing, the star of the reality TV show "The Simple Life" said she was unaware her driving privileges had been completely suspended when police stopped her for driving without headlights on February 27. They impounded her blue Bentley after discovering she was driving on a suspended license.

Hilton said her publicist had told her she was permitted to drive for work-related reasons after the first 30 days of her license suspension late last November, and she relied on that. In Touch Weekly reported on Sunday Hilton that had fired her publicist, Elliot Mintz. Mintz was not immediately available to comment.

Hilton was sentenced in January to three years probation after pleading no contest -- the equivalent of a guilty plea -- to alcohol-related reckless driving last September.
