Re: S.C. May Cut Jail Time for Organ Donors
I am not disagreeing with the idea because of my personal outlook, I just don't see it as being a good idea because of the source. I realize the same problems could arise with the "free" poplulation, but it seems like this could just be opening up another brand of can of worms.

Re: S.C. May Cut Jail Time for Organ Donors
What I really have a problem with is someone who drank or used drugs until they killed off their liver and then can afford to buy one, like Larry Hagman and David Crosby to name a few. The transplant lists are often not fair, some die waiting for their organ while others get their second organ relatively quickly.
As far as time off for organs, 180 days is about 6 months. If this is for the jail population, they are usually serving terms of 2 years or less. The jail is a more restrictive environment than a prison; no contact visits and the inmates are pretty much confined to their housing units. All inmates who come into the jail are medically screened. There is a battery of testing done on someone who wants to be a potential organ donor. There are a few diseases that sometimes don' t show up for a while such as Hepatitis C and AIDS but usually these are contracted before they come in. Now the prison population is a different story with the prison tattoos and "other" activities.

Re: S.C. May Cut Jail Time for Organ Donors
I don't think that someone in prison should get a reduced sentence because they donate. I think they should be able to if they chose to, but not get a reduced sentence. Prisoners already can get stuff normal citizens cannot, such as a free education. A law abiding citizen donates an organ, what do they get, besides the satisfaction of doing something good? If I died tomorrow my organs would be donated, but my family would not get compensation for that. Why should prisoners get yet one more thing a law abiding citizen cannot get?
