Re: Ten Worst US Presidents
If they did secede we wouldn't be a great nation today. Thank God Lincoln was in charge not to let it happen. And the Civil Rights movement brought out lots of states rights governors wanting the feds to let them have the right to keep segregation. I don't think that was good for our nation. A house divided will not stand.

Re: Ten Worst US Presidents
If he would have let the states leave then he would have been a bad President for not keeping us together and because he didnt let them leave you view him as a bad President, on that subject I dont think he would have won either way. But I do see what you mean.

Adam, this sounds rather insulting.

What would have made him a "good" President would have been if he had attempted to fix the problems before it escalated to the point of where they Southern states were to the point of wanting to secede.

The Confederate states DID succeed from the Union. They set up their own govenrment and Capitol. It was only after the Civil War that the laws were passed prohibiting states from suceeding. Wasn't long ago that South Carolina tried to circumvent the laws and there was much talk about the state succeeding.
Just a couple of interesting reads regarding the Civil War and Succession of the Confederate States.

Re: Ten Worst US Presidents
I will have to agree with Tngirl on the whole Lincoln thing. He didn't care about the slaves. When he was in the North it was all Slavery is wrong, we must abolish it. When he was in the South, he was all for Slavery. I realize he was a politician and they flip flop constantly, but I just find this to be disgusting.
Frederick Douglas wrote some interesting books regarding Lincoln's presidency. You should check them out.

Re: Ten Worst US Presidents
I was taught Lincoln freed the slaves when I was in school. Are they now rewriting history? People just love a good constiracy and parents are shocked to read the books their kids are learning from today.
Of course, history will tell the side of the winners but would you still want slavery? Would you want a divided country with the Southern states having a different government?

Are you referring to the Frederick Douglas books I wrote about?
If so, Frederick Douglas was a black abolitionists who lived during the Civil War. He was born a slave, he escaped from his owner, and went onto become one of the most prominent African Americans of his time.
He wrote books and newspapers. He spoke with Lincoln often on the treatment of black soldiers during the Civil War.
His books are not rewriting history, his books are our history.
